I would assume that you have read the letter from Fr John Magri informing you that a new principal has been appointed to Sacred Heart School from the beginning of the 2014 school year. I would like to congratulate the incoming principal, Mr Brian Martin and pass on my support. He is currently Deputy Principal at Resurrection School in Keysborough and I have met him professionally on several occasions. Brian was also part of the Principals’ group who attended the conference in Nottingham, England last holidays. He also has a strong interest in Outward Facing Schools and community involvement for schools. I am confident that he will continue with the Development Plan set in motion after the school review last year and will bring a wealth of enthusiasm and knowledge to our school. Mr Martin will meet with the staff soon and he will be involved in planning sessions between now and the end of the year to ensure a smooth handover. Term 3 ended with some great community events with the Visual Arts Show which was a truly outstanding collection of work the students have completed during the year. The many different medium and styles were amazing and Mrs Fran Frederic again displayed her gifted teaching ability in this area. I was impressed with the ongoing DVD which captured the engagement and enjoyment of the children as they worked on their masterpieces in the visual arts centre. The opening of the Art of Values Murals for the Community Arts Project by Michael Salmon was another highlight for the school. Each class had worked on an individual value in preparation for these murals and more will be heard about their understanding and practice of these as the year goes on. Again the Fathers’ Day Breakfast brought many Fathers together and the children were delighted to see some dad’s visit their classroom afterwards. Friday 13 th September saw many families and staff members come together for the Dinner Dance at Merrimu Receptions to enjoy the fine food, the great company and energetic moves of the dancers. A big thank you to Maria and Joe Raucci for ensuring the food and the venue were first class for us. Joe is the manager there and this is a great venue for a celebration if you are planning one!! The Footy Day was lots of fun for the students and the teachers and I congratulate the Year 6 Sport Captains who, under the instruction of Mr Farrell, conducted the group activities for all classes across the school. Their leadership and encouragement of the participants was fantastic and they showed excellent leadership qualities and were very responsible. It was great to see a few new faces supporting our regular crew for the Sausage Sizzle which is a treat that the students look forward to at the end of each term. Parent School Improvement Survey A special thanks to the parents who took the time to participate and complete the Parent School Improvement Survey. When we receive the results they will be used for future planning for the school. NAPLAN results have been delayed but should be available for parents either this Friday or early next week. OPTIONAL PARENT / TEACHER/ STUDENT MEETINGS: BOOKINGS ARE NOW OPEN N B The Optional Parent / Teacher/ Student Meetings will be held next on Tuesday 15 th October from 3:45 to 8pm. Dear Parents, Welcome back for the final term for the year and my final term before I retire and there are many things to be done!! SCHOOL CLOSURE DAYS FOR TERM 4 Please note that the school will be closed on the following days: FRIDAY 1ST NOVEMBER : Staff Teacher Professional Learning Day on Positive Behaviour Management conducted by Ms Patrice Wiseman, Outreach Worker from Larminier School. MONDAY NOVEMBER 4TH : Staff Professional Learning Exploring the Link between Social Justice and the Scriptures. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 5TH : PUBLIC HOLIDAY for the Melbourne Cup Day. You may like to arrange for a time away with the family on this long weekend. Displaying Gospel Values within the Community As was demonstrated in the work completed in the Community Arts Project and the work done in creating the displays in the two school yards, Gospel Values are a very important part of the life of the school. We would hope that all parents support us in our endeavours in developing these values within the school community. At Sacred Heart we believe that it takes a whole community to educate a child and we believe that it is the responsibility of every member of the community to assist in this. We believe in the equality for all students, teachers and families and we expect this respect to be afforded to all members of the school community. We ask parents to support us in carrying out this value. Students are here to learn how to develop into positive, well rounded people, ready to become valuable citizens in our society and it is our duty to assist them all to achieve this goal. As they are young and learning the ‘how to’ of these complicated skills, they need our support and care and not criticism. There will be times, when as adults with our human frailty, we may falter a little and so with children, this is going to happen more often and this is when they need our care and strong support. However, along with this we do have boundaries that we do not expect to be crossed and sanctions are put in place to ensure the safety and well- being of all students. I would ask that, if you have any concerns in these matters that you speak to the class teacher or to me as principal or to Mrs Morice or Miss O’Grady, before any child, family or teachers are discussed (often without the full story) in the playground or over coffee. I am sure that all parents would value this respect for their family. Please discourage negative discussions about another child, family or teacher as you are very powerful role models for your children as they live what they see and hear. I do appreciate it when parents take the time to come to discuss their concerns with me and for me to hear their point of view. I can assure you that the staff work very closely as a team to promote the wellbeing of all members of the school and we have the support of some excellent professionals to support us in this endeavour. It is important to remember a couple of Christ’s words to us: “Love one another as I have loved you” and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. We should also reflect on the statement of compassion ‘Walk a mile in my shoes” as we all have a different fit in society and are shaped by different circumstances. Two of our community mums are part of this St Vincent de Paul group and are calling on your generosity. There will be a basket near the office for you to place your contributions.

St Vinnies’ 2013 Christmas Appeal……… This Christmas, many Australian families will struggle! In our local community. Vinnies have identified around 20 families and 30 single people who this Christmas will not be able to afford food, toiletries and other basic essentials. In the past we have had our Christmas hampers supplied by Vinnies up in Mildura, however sadly they are unable to help us this year. We really need your help and don’t know where else to turn. In short we need your help with donated food items detailed on the attached list to make up around 50 Christmas hampers. We wish we could capture and bottle the joy that receiving something so simple brings to the faces of each of our friends. We need the food collected by Friday 06/12 please.

Vinnies Op Shop needs bric-a-bracs Another practical way of helping the marginalised in our community is to donate any bric-a-brac for sale at a very low price to the Vinnies Ormond Op-Shop. Many marginalised people shop at the Op-Shop for Christmas presents and it also raises funds, which are in turn used to buy food for those without. You can donate the bric-a-bracs directly to the Op Shop at 491 North Road. Please contact Julie Meade (M) 0418 356 765 if any one has any questions or would like to help or even become a Vinnies Volunteer yourself, On behalf of those in most need for whatever reason; thank you! Scholastic Books – New Book Club Co-ordinator required – Please consider this worthwhile role as Book club will not be able to continue without your help. Hi, my name is Gordana and I have been the book club co-ordinator at Sacred Heart for a number of years. My son James is in Year 6 now and a replacement co-ordinator is needed to take on this voluntary role for next year. It is not a difficult job, taking a few hours a month, and I am happy to provide all the training and support required before the year finishes. You may wish to share the role with another parent as I have done in the past. Please leave your details with the office staff if you are interested and I will contact you. Thanks Gordana

Following on from the Winter Gala Day where we competed in Football, Soccer, Netball and Volleyball, we went straight into trials and training for the Oakleigh District Athletics . If your child was born between 1 July 2001 and 30 June 2004you may be eligible to receive up to $12,500 of entitlements.

The government has now put a deadline on this entitlement so please email [email protected] to receive more information.
