Children are permitted to wear red play clothes (mufti) on Friday. To begin our day of celebration all parents are invited to join us for Mass in our church 9.15am. The Hub have then organised a disco in the school hall. There will be two sessions for the disco, one for the younger students and one session for the older students. The year 6 students have organised some fantastic stalls such as face and finger nail painting, cup-cakes, craft and games. Children are invited to bring along some gold coins to participate in the lunchtime stalls. The money raised will supplement funding for the Year 6 Graduation event later in the year. This week parents were invited and welcomed to Parent-Teacher interviews to discuss their child’s academic progress. Attending the interviews is one specific step to connect parents to in-school learning. When parents actively engage with teachers to understand more about the process of learning, how teachers teach and what parents can do at home to support learning, the student benefits! On Monday the first round offers for Kindergarten placements for 2018 will be posted. All interviews for new families for enrolment in Kindergarten 2018 have now been completed as well as the parent session for families with siblings at our school. The next step in the enrolment process is that parents respond to the offer and book their pre-schooler into a small group screening session in August. Thank you to the parents who have worked so hard in contacting our local member and politicians and informing our parents regarding the current funding issues that all Australian Catholic schools face. The issues are complex and at times frustrating to understand as conflicting views are reported depending on the interests of the group. The AEA Amendment Bill goes to the senate today! Religious Education News Mission Project Day On Thursday 15 June, the SRC Executives and Liturgy Team went to Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Forestville, to participate in an environmental day. There were 12 schools and 6 parishes who also participated in the day as well. The theme of the day was the message from Pope Francis to “Care for Our Common Home” also known as Laudato Si’. We learnt about the earth and the environment, how to protect it because it is God’s creation. We met Jacki from Catholic Earth Care who spoke to us about Laudato Si’. Laudato Si’ is a message from Pope Francis about looking after the beautiful world we have. We also had a zoo keeper, Catherine, talk to us about pollution. She also brought along a freshwater turtle and a blue tongue lizard. Overall it was heaps of fun and we learnt a lot. It was very eye-opening, and it made us want it make a difference, in our community, and in our world. At the end of the day we wrote an action plan about how we can take greater care of our environment at Sacred Heart. We are going to talk to the SRC class representatives at the next meeting about our action plan. We would like to thank Mrs McBryde and the other organizers for this amazing opportunity. Police Visits at Sacred Heart Over the last two weeks students from Sacred Heart have been visited by the Northern Beaches Crime Prevention Officers talking to students in Kindergarten to Year 2 about Stranger Danger. In Year’s 3-6 the focus was about Keeping Ourselves Safe online. The key points were:

Do you know the age restrictions around the following online Apps:

Instagram 13 years +

Snap Chat 13 years

17 years No age restriction as long as you stick to the

rules

Facebook 13 years plus

Musical.ly/ Live.ly 13 years plus

Did you know there is a YouTube for Kids? (This is a safer option for your children as YouTube really is for people over 17)

The Police also talked to the children about creating a Safe Profile and User name. They spoke to the children about the importance of having any accounts on ‘private’. They also told children to be truthful when signing up for Apps as the companies that provide these services have security settings and certain obligations to keep children safe. Some catch phrases or slogans from the talks were:

Think about your selfies- Are you giving away your location, school and age?

Ask yourself: Should a stranger know this information about you?

Be responsible and respectful Cyber safety

It’s not OK - tell an adult!

3 steps to take - Ignore, Block, Report

Don’t be a Bystander - Ask “are you OK!” Tell a grown up

Parent to Parent Quote from Progressing Parental Engagement Parent Fact Sheet: “There are two important things you can do to get the most out of home learning: building your child’s confidence and supporting them to learn independently.” I try to see homework as an opportunity to learn about what my kids are doing in class, rather than a chore. One child’s homework can become a conversation topic for the whole family – if one of the volcanoes in Italy erupted could that destroy the world was a subject discussed at our house this weekend, starting from geography homework. My younger children do their homework at the table or the computer in the kitchen. I can then encourage and help them when needed, without hovering too much. A tip from the last Mater newsletter was to have specific times set for homework, for example 2-3 30 minute blocks. For older children this would be each night, but for younger children that could be over the week.

Start a conversation with your child about their learning… Eloise Critchley and Leonie Scarlett Source: www.education.act.gov.au/teaching_and_learning/parental-engagement Information from Broken Bay Catholic School Parents can be found on their website www.brokenbayparentcouncil.com or follow them on twitter.com/brokenbaydpc
