Dear Family, When you look closely at the readings this weekend they seem to be promoting dishonesty and cheating. In the first reading from the book of Amos, the prophet was ruthless in his denunciation of those who presented to be religious and who never the less were dishonored in their daily lives. They thought that what they were doing was ok because it only hurt the poor people. Then in the Gospel we hear the story of the dishonest steward that was taking advantage of his job as working for the wealthy landowner and collecting his money from those who used his property. When his master finds out what the steward was doing, he threatened to let him go. The steward was so upset that he did not know what he was going to do. So he came up with a way to keep his job. He called each of his master’s debtors in and forgave them part of what they owed. What he actually did was gave up a big part of his commission that he was making and reduced their debt so that the master still collected all the money that was due to him. Jesus was making a statement that each one of us have to be held accountable for what we do in this life. If we do good we will be rewarded, if not, we need to take a good look at what it is that we are doing and if it is not helping us to gain eternal life, we need to make some changes in our life, If we are totally committed to the Lord, then we will be willing to use all of our resources (money, property, talents, etc.) to serve the Lord. Everything we have was given to us in trust so that it might be used for the good of all. Our wealth lies not in what we possess, but in what we share with others. May God be with each one of us and help us to grow closer to Jesus. Yours in Christ,

Deacon John M. Thompson
