Edmund Waller WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
PLEASE TURN OVER FOR THIS WEEK’S TOP STORIES...
Book Talk
Jasper and Bakari in Year 1 think books
are interesting and would like to share a
couple of their favourites with you in this
week’s Book Talk. Jasper has been
reading You Choose by Nick Sharratt
and Pippa Goodhart. In the book you
have to make a few choices like: Where
would you go if you could go anywhere? (Jasper
chose the forest.) Who would you want to be your
friend? (Jasper chose a vampire, because he likes to
go to scary places and thinks the vampire would like
this, too.) Which pet would you like? (Jasper chose the dragon to guard
him from his brother!) In class, Jasper and his friend have made an
information book about butterflies. In the holiday, he would like to
choose an information book to find out more about busy bees.
Jasper noticed that Bakari is always reading Little
Miss Birthday by Roger Hargreaves in the book
corner. Bakari loves birthdays and can not wait to
be six in May. In the book, Little Miss Birthday is busy
trying to find the perfect present for her friends.
Bakari thinks she is good at buying presents. For
example, she buys a sledge for Mr Wrong to use in
the snow.

Sox Appeal
Last week, the Head of Fundraising at the 999
Club popped into school to collect the remain-
ing socks donated by our school community.
He also presented us with a certificate, recognis-
ing our contribution to the community. The Sox
Appeal has now met its target of 15,000 socks!
This means we can now end our collection at
school. Well done for everyone who made the
effort to help others less fortunate than
themselves.
You can read about the success of this year’s
winter shelter here. It is brilliant to hear that the
£953.07 we have raised this year is having such a positive impact on
the community.
School Meal Price Increase from
May 2016
The price of school meals is due
to increase from £1.90 to £2.00 per
meal with effect from 2nd May
2016. The price rise will have no
financial
impact upon
Free School
Meal
recipients.
In this final week of term, a number of classes have
showcased this term’s learning in a Memorable Event.
It was brilliant to see so many parents and carers
visiting Year 2’s Toy Museum where the children
showed off their learning, including their marvellous moving monsters,
poisonous potions and teddy bear artwork. The Year 4 children
demonstrated their knowledge of Mexican culture with a Carnival on
Wednesday afternoon. The Year 5 children have been designing and
creating their own computer games, which the Code Club children
trialled on Thursday afternoon. This week, a number of Year 5 children
reflect on the process of printing their own tiles this term.
Tyree: “At first I chose to draw a piece of ivy, because I like the pattern
of the light and dark green on the leaf. I also like the shape of the ivy
leaf, which was triangular with curved corners. Afterwards, I made a
square out of black card, which I used to zoom in on a piece of my
drawing. I chose blue and pink ink for my design, because they are
contrasting colours.”
Leon: “In art we have been printing different kinds of
flowers on tiles. We rolled paint onto our flower
drawing and we turned and then rolled them in the
other direction. This made sure that the drawing
transferred onto the paper. My finished tile looked
like it was 3D, this was good even though it is not what
I planned in the beginning.”
Zakaria: “We took some ink, newspaper and
rollers. We put newspaper over the whole
table. We drew on a polystyrene tile with a
pencil, which was a bit difficult. After that, we
rolled the ink onto the tile. We used a clean
roller to press our design onto a clean piece of
paper. We had to think of how we were going
to place our design and had to roll over it five
or six times.”
India: “We have created press
prints in art, inspired by William
Morris. My favourite part of
making my print was rolling the
red, purple and turquoise inks
onto the tile. I had to make sure I
did not put on too much ink, so I
could still see the lines I had
carved. This was essential to
making a clear design.”
Sazed: “In Year 5 we have been making our own
computer games, using Scratch, as part of our Inventors
topic. First, we played Pac-Man for ideas and broke it
down into small sections (decomposed it), to understand
the different techniques used in the game. Next, we
made a background stage and a sprite for our own
version. After, we created the code for our sprite to
make it move and so it can’t go through the walls of our
maze. To make sure that it worked we had to test the
game and debug it by making changes if it didn’t work
the way we wanted it to. Finally, we made new sprites
for the character to eat and get points.
This week we are evaluating our games as a year group,
for our memorable event, and you can see them all by
visiting the Year 5 blogs on the school website.”
