What was the Edmund Fitzgerald

The Edmund Fitzgerald, was the first maximum sized Laker ever built. Its eel of hull was 301 yards. Launched on June

1958.

• It held a record for the largest ship on the Great Lakes until 1975.

• She made many voyages across the lakes carrying iron ore.

• “The Big Fitz” effected Michigan, because it carried so much iron ore, for so long. From Cleveland to Detroit, so they could make cars, etc.

On November 10, 1975, it broke in two. 29 men died, and nobody survived

• The Edmund Fitzgerald’s tragedy effected MI, because it could no longer carry tons of iron ore across the great lakes.

What Happened?

The waves were too large in the storm the Fitz was sailing in. It was headed to Whitefish point but it never made it. It’s last message was “We’re holding are own”.

• The church bell rang 29 times after the wreck.

The Wreck

It Sunk in 530 ft deep water. There has been half a dozen divers to the site since the wreck in 1975.

• The “Queen of the Great Lakes” is now gone forever.
