F or regular readers of my column it is nothing new for me to bang on about one of the things that simply amazes

me about my job - the incredibly talented and interesting people I get to meet each week.I recently had an old school friend up for the weekend and we were discussing a

fellow student in our Year 12 class who went on to have a journalism career in the media industry.He is a great guy and passionate about what he does. Apparently it drives her crazy that on his Facebook page he will casually drop into the conversation how he was chatting the day before to Bruce Springsteen, or Paul McCartney or someone from Midnight Oil.And it was a funny thing – I don’t think her comments were driven by envy – she just thinks he is a bit of a name dropper

and a bit of a big noter. But I have to say I don’t actually think he is; I think he is just inspired by the amazing things these musicians have achieved in their lifetimes.And I understand that, as I often feel exactly the same way, even though the people I meet up with each day may not be international musicians living crazy extravagant lifestyles.However they are people who are driven, passionate and interesting and I really enjoy hearing their stories and more importantly I love that I am able to share them with you all.Happy reading.P.S. to be honest if Paul McCartney phoned me to discuss what he is up to – I probably wouldn’t turn his call down!

When you get a call to say you have been invited out to see an eight metre long footbridge in someone’s backyard that has been painted with the design of a rainbow serpent, you know straight away this is definitely not an opportunity to be missed.This was what happened to me last week when Brenda Smart of Beerwah phoned the office to tell us about the project her ‘retired scenic artist husband’ Paull had just completed.Not fully visualising the scale of the project but keen to check it out – I have to say it was truly amazing. The bridge makes up just one interesting element of a 2.5 acre block that is almost completely covered in gardens. The bridge is located at the bottom of a steep pathway where all of the building material had to be lugged down to.Paull, who studied Fine and Commercial Art at the National Art School in Sydney in the 1950s, started his working life as a scenic artist with Channel 9 when the television industry was being established in Australia.In his role as scenic artist he created sets for different television shows including the iconic Sound of Music, Bandstand, the Don Lane Show, Graham Kennedy Show, and Paul Hogan Shows.

A rainbow serpent moves into Beerwah

After working for 15 years in the industry, he moved into the business world, taking on management and marketing roles and working as an educator / lecturer and mentor in the field. However it would seem that Paull’s great creativity and design talent is very much a lifelong love. From 2002 to 2010 he worked with the company that created the dramatic fire closing ceremony at the Woodford Folk Festival.While Paull has had formal training, it would appear his innate creativity is a driving force in the garden and specifically the recent bridge painting he has created.He explained to me that he didn’t do up a design before he started, he just worked from a concept in his head, which is hard to believe when you look at the final result in which each element seems to fit exactly into an allocated space.The design incorporates the diversity of animals that makes his garden home including whistling ducks, frogs, turtles, catfish and water dragons.The entire project of construction and painting took Paull only just over two and a half weeks – he was fortunate to have some help from three friends, Steve, Wayne and Chris in the tasks of moving the building materials and some of the construction work for the 8m x 1.2 m footbridge.

What’s planned for LandsboroughCouncil’s draft planning strategy – out now for public comment – includes the following predictions for some of the key growth indicators for Landsborough and surrounds.•Population:2011–4142;2031–6048•Localjobs:2011–1390;2031–2422•Landzonedasurban:531hectares•Numberofsingledwelling:2011–1250; 2031–1808•Numberofmultipledwellings:2011–86; 2031–352The figures show that Council expects some modest growth in population and dwellings (both singleandmultiple)overthenext20years.Comparingthe2004CaloundraCityPlanmapforLandsborough with the corresponding one from the draft planning strategy, the urban footprint for Landsborough has shrunk slightly, with some urbanareasbeingrezoned.Someaffectedparcelshavebeenrezonedtobeclassified as ‘Limited Development (Constrained Land)’, whilst the parcel of land between Sunland and Old Landsborough Road has been changed from ‘Township Residential’ to ‘Emerging Community Zone’.According to the draft document (Section 6.2.17),thiszoneistoensurethatdevelopmentis designed and coordinated to achieve safe, healthy and sustainable new urban communities.Another interesting change is that a small portion of the vacant industrial land (opposite theall-abilitiesplaygroundandadjacentto

Transportable Shade Sheds) has been changed from ‘Medium Impact Industry’ to be ‘Specialised Centre Zone’.AccordingtoSection6.2.21,thiszonewillallowfor a ‘food and drink outlet’ – you may remember a small issue of a previously unsuccessful McDonald’s restaurant application for the site.Fourteen parcels of land on Gympie Street North (between Bella Street and Myla Road) have been rezonedfordualoccupancy(i.e.duplex).ThePriorityInfrastructurePlanningsection(Section4)showstherearenonewroadprojects,nonewcyclewayprojectsandnonewpathwayprojectplannedfromnowuntil2031.TheLandsboroughLocalPlanCode(Section7.2.20)establishesthatthevisionforLandsborough is for it to remain a small rural town with a visible heritage character, primarily servicing the local needs of the immediately surrounding urban, rural residential and rural community.To compliment this, the planning scheme has a supplementary section dealing with maintaining the traditional cultural character of Landsborough (refertoSchedule6.2).This prescribes design and development outcomes for certain areas and buildings which have cultural heritage or townscape significance.To view the local plan code for Landsborough, the associated map, the cultural design guidelines as well as the planning map from the 2004CaloundraCityPlan,headtothe ‘HotOffThePress’sectionofourwebsite (www.gcnews.com.au).

These concerns will be raised in submissions lodged to Council in response to the Draft Scheme.Readers are encouraged to closely look at the draft to see how this may affect them and their immediate area or area of interest.However, the draft is largely silent on what might happen in the areas outside of theLocalPlanAreas.The areas of particular interest to us include the national parks, scientific areas, conservationareas,andareasimmediatelyadjacenttothem,whichcomprisethe green corridors and rural agricultural land, etc. within our region. How urban and infrastructure development can be sustainably carried out with a minimum impact on such areas is something GMAN is always interested in.TheDraftPlanningSchememakesfrequentreferencethroughoutthedraftthatany development must reflect the ‘traditional character and natural environment elements of the area’ and/or ‘the existing character of the area’ and/or ‘the character and amenity of the area’ and/or ‘the heritage character’ and/or ‘the traditional rural town character’.GMAN is aware that there are some community views, lobbying bodies, and interest groups which support a population growth much greater than that providedforintheDraftPlanningScheme.It will be very interesting to see how the Council will deal with any submissions whichproposesuchgrowth,andstillapplytherequirementforthetraditionalcharacter elements imposed by the Draft.Unfortunately, Australia in general has a rather poor history of managing and protecting its flora and fauna and natural heritage.When some of the current threats to agricultural land and our food bowls are factored in, we should really take notice of the direction the country is heading and the future that this presents.While the Draft statements in respect to the retention of the ‘traditional and existing character and natural environment’ of our area are laudable, we await withinteresttoseewhethertheseareanythingmorethanjustmotherhoodstatements.

TheyalsohaddifficultywiththeproposedcostsofthePublicDomainproject.The members were concerned that the proposed expenditure was being planned for without first obtaining a commitment from the property owners directly affectedbytheprojecttoinvestinrenovationstocomplementthePublicDomainrevitalisation (council officers are working on this engagement as one on one with the property owners affected).ThecalculationsandassumptionspresentedintheDPShadbeenproventobeinaccurate, with growth in Glasshouse Country having no real increase in rural residential or low density housing.The planned growth is in the conversion of now low density residential areas into mediumdensityanddualoccupancyzone.Thiswillrequirethedemolitionofsound brick dwellings and be replaced with units or town houses.TheletterfromtheChamberregardingtheDPSwillreflectontheshortnessofthetimefromreleasetothecloseofsubmissionsonDecember14.TheChamberwillberequestinganextensionoftimeforthelodgementofsubmissionontheDPS.The members believe the lack of consideration to maximise the use of the existingpublictransportsystemislackingintheDPS.MembersbelievetheDPSdoesnotencouragetheretentionoftheruralTownship image to reflect the history and lifestyle of the communities in Glasshouse Country.MembersbelievetheLocalPlanningAreasforalltheTownshipsontherailcorridorshouldbeexpandedtodeliveramixinallzoningssoastocreateabalance in residential living.The Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce invites local participation from residents in all Glasshouse Country communities to share your ideas so our local team can obtain the best from your views no matter what they are.Email:[email protected],GlassHouseMountains,QLD,4518.

Ninety years of memories celebratedA special service was held at the Peachester Uniting Church on Sunday, November 18 to mark 90 years as part of the community. It was presented by Rev George Woodward and Rev Keith Ewin.Peachester local Joan Kropp shared her reflections of the churches formal history as well as her personal memories of the events held there and the contributions made by members over the years to keep the church going.There was a bible reading by Gwen Simcoe and Amazing Grace was sung by Jeffrey Rickard and John Newton to an absolute capacity congregation in this small church.The Peachester Uniting Church was opened on Sunday, December 10, 1922, as a result of a group of Methodist worshippers who set in motion their dream of a church of their own in 1920.Joan explained that it was through the generosity of Ken and Ruth Hendren who gave a small block of land adjacent to the hall, and William A Grigor who donated all the timber for the building that the wheels were set in motion. The building of the church was done by locals at voluntary working bees and was completed at a cost of 183 pounds.The donation of a pulpit and communion set, the purchase of an organ and a dozen pews from the Beerburrum Methodist Church were all milestones met by these dedicated parishioners.Joan spoke of the garden parties and fetes that were held over the years to fundraise for the costs of on-going maintenance of the building as well as the Christmas barbeques, and carol services held on the Sunday before Christmas. Originally Sunday School was held underneath the church, however in 1959 the stumps needed replacing and the church was lowered.Over the years there has been many weddings, funerals and christenings held at the church as well as Golden and Diamond Anniversaries.Today, although worshippers are few in number, their loyalty remains as fervent as ever and just this year they have become part of the Beerwah – Glasshouse Uniting Church with services held at Peachester on two Sundays each month.

Tanzania for Christmas not a holidayInstead of celebrating a lovely family Christmas at home this year, one young former Beerwah High student Daisy Bradford will be working as a volunteer nurse for a month in the township of Moshi. The town is in Tanzania and lies 1400 metres above sea level on the beautiful slope of Mt Kilimanjaro.The people who live in Tanzania live on 50 cents a day and have limited water supplies and health care available, Daisy said.Daisy said she is really excited about taking on the challenge of offering her volunteer services to work in hospitals, health clinics and orphanages, caring for adults and children with Malaria, HIV and Aids, assisting with child immunisations and caring for those who suffer from malnutrition and dehydration.She is currently a fulltime second year nursing student at Sunshine Coast University, and has been working two part-time jobs including one at Embracia in Glasshouse Country, where she has been employed for the past four years after completing her Certificate 3 in Aged Care.

The trip to Tanzania is part of an organised group program that is run each year. For the past 12 months the individual participants have been working together to raise the funds required to pay for the trip.The total cost works out to be approximately

$6,000.00 and includes visa, vaccinations, accommodation, sanitisation equipment and donations for the village.A range of local community groups from across the Sunshine Coast have generously provided them with financial support which they have really appreciated, however with only just over two weeks until Daisy leaves she still has a bit of a shortfall of funds.She was hoping that some generous locals may be able to assist with donations - if you would like to help Daisy you can give her a call on 0434 420 868.

Community NewsGreen light for future blue lights By Lea ParkesThere will be plenty of local school aged students who are going to be pretty excited when they find out Blue Light Discos are going to become a regular event locally, with plans to hold four each year at the Beerwah Community Hall.Together with colleagues from the Caloundra Blue light association, local volunteers and support from Queensland Police, a new Beerwah Blue light association (in connection with Caloundra) has been set up.The discos are designed to give local children a fun event that they can look forward to, and also give their parents confidence in knowing their children will be supervised by police and approved volunteers. There was a low key event as a test run during September which was run for under 12s, it was well supported by local business and those attending really enjoyed themselves.

The next disco which will be for both primary and high school students will be held on Friday, December 7 between 6.00pm and 9.30pm.Children must be collected by a responsible adult at the door promptly at the end of the night. Entry is $7.00 which includes an entry into a prize draw; the last event saw numerous children win prizes which totalled over $600.00 in value. The children will also be able to purchase sausages on bread, lollies and poppers at the event at a nominal cost.It won’t be just the children who will be the winners from this decision, plenty of parents will be also able to make the most of the opportunity to have a night out and it should make for some extra business for our local venues and restaurants. Shaylie has signed up to participate in a youth trek in Africa with Global Immersion and Bernie Kelly’s Ylead program in December of 2013 when she completes Year 11.“I will be working with and alongside children in a school / orphanage in Tanzania called St Judes and every dollar I can raise will help lift a child out of the poverty cycle and into education,” she said.One of the fundraising activities she is doing is a Christmas raffle which will be drawn on December 23. Rotary supports breakfast clubThe Breakfast Club at Glass House Mountains State School has been established for over 10 years with Mark Scott running it for the past six years.Recently local Rotarian Peter Farrell started working with Mark and has since gotten his fellow Rotarians to become regular supporters of the program.The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains provides $30.00 per week for the spreads for the toast.The Breakfast Club runs two mornings a week and serves the students toast, fruit and cordial before they start school.Matilda Fruit Barn and Beerwah Bakery also supply fruit and bread to be served each week.

Sunshine Girls shine at first eventA new local group has formed called Sunshine Girls the group is made up of local ladies that share a common interest in raising funds for charity.They recently held a fundraising event – a garden party at Glass House Mountains. The event was a fundraiser for Guide Dogs Queensland, and on the day ‘Champ’ the guide dog was a special guest. The ladies would like to thank everyone who supported the day.They have a beautiful painting of a labrador pup painted by local artist Ron Hills that will be raffled after Christmas when the Guide Dogs Queensland have a display planned for Beerwah.The group plan to organise four events each

year – with the funds raised going to different groups or charities each time.Group President Kay Farrell said the next major event to be held in March, 2013 will be a Black Tie event to raise funds for local Rural Fire Services.If you would like to get involved in the group please phone Kay on 0409 071 007.

School NewsLesson on beach safetyLandsborough State School students recently participated in Surf Lifesaving Queensland's Beach Safety Education sessions. Surf Lifesavers visited the school and spoke to students about various aspects of beach safety.They advised students that even though the beach is a wonderful place to be, there are some dangers to be aware of. Topics covered in the presentation included flags and hazard signs displayed on beaches, rip currents, what to do in an emergency situation, sun safety, marine stingers and other dangerous marine creatures. With the summer school holidays just around the corner, this was a timely reminder for everyone on how to remain safe on our beaches.

Mr Andrew Powell, State Member of Parliament for Glass House presents the Encouragement Award to Flynn Harding

Middle School at Glasshouse Country Christian College is the fastest growing section of the school and this was evident on the Middle School Awards Night. Approximately 300 people crowded into the church auditorium to proudly watch as their children were presented with well-earned awards.This year the students had to work even harder to earn their gold, silver and bronze medals and certificates as the criterion was raised. However, there was still a continuous stream of delighted smiling students sporting more gold and silver than the last Olympics.Most of the award recipients shook hands with one of the invited guest presenters but Holly Dodwell from Year 8 changed the pace when she embraced one special guest with a huge bear hug. Holly had the perfect excuse that the person presenting the award was not only the Chairman of the College Board but also her much loved dad.The College was also privileged to have Mr Andrew Powell, State Member of Parliament for Glass House to present the prestigious Encouragement and Spirit Awards.

Doing Business5 minutes with Phill LindsayLong-time local Phill has been working as the Caravan Park Manager at Gowinta Farms for the past few months and he just loves it.So Phill, how long have you been working managing Caravan Parks?This is my first experience in this type of role, but previously I worked at Beerwah Small Engines for six years where it is important to have good communication skills. You have to be able to connect with people and provide them with the service they require and get them a good outcome. All of these elements are just as important in this role.What do you enjoy most about the job?I really enjoy meeting so many different people who come and stay here, they come from all over Australia and from a range of other countries.They have interesting stories and experiences to share and for the most part, our permanent residents and casual guests are good people who love the lifestyle and are easy to get along with.And the company are very good to work for, they are good people, our families have had a long association – they are wonderful people and it is a wonderful place to work.

How big is the caravan park?The park has space for 50 sites suitable for all types of vehicles from small vans right up to fifth wheelers and buses. We cater to both permanent and a lot of short-term travellers and tourists. We are currently focusing on increasing the number of permanent residents.What sort of people choose to live here permanently?A number of them work on the farm, some work for the pineapple processing company that lease sheds from us. However these days there are many people who choose the flexibility of living in a caravan, it allows them to be able to travel overseas for extended periods of time and not have the burden that comes with leaving an empty home. Or it can give them the chance to experience extended stops on much larger journeys particularly for the ‘Grey Nomands’ who may look for seasonal work in the local area.What do people like about the about the park’s location?I get plenty of excellent feedback from people – for permanent residents being off the main road means that it is pretty quiet, but still close to the train station, shops and services. And for short-term guests they seem to enjoy the fact that they are staying on a ‘working farm’ which can be quite different from their daily lives at home.What are the things about the park’s facilities that people like?The fact that the park is still quite new, everything is very clean and neat and tidy and modern impresses most visitors.

The layout is good, the large shared kitchen and dining area is great for short-term visitors, particularly the younger travellers in their wicked vans, but also for families. We also have a small playground for the kids and an outdoor barbeque area which is great in the warmer months.What else brings people here?I have to say the fact that we are pet friendly is one thing that these days is important to our guests, many of the Grey Nomads have small dogs travelling with them, so we are able to make them welcome here.We also have proved a popular spot for locals who have visitors that want to come and stay but don’t or can’t have their caravans on suburban blocks. For the grandparents who want to have a visit, but also like the peace and quiet of their van, they can book in here and have the flexibility of coming and going to catch up with their children and grandchildren.What else would you like the locals to know?We are open for business, the caravan park is here to stay. We offer a great location, have great facilities and are well priced from $150.00 per week for permanents. Glass House powers upThe mystery of the scaffolding alongside the 13004SOLAR showroom at Glass House Mountains has been finally solved, with the installation last week of 57 solar panels.The 20 metre long structure is the handiwork of Ty Hall from 13004SOLAR.Ian and Judy Hall (Ty’s parents) are happy to finally have the system up and running.“We applied to Energex over three years ago and then we applied to Council for building approval.“It’s wonderful to see it come together after such a long wait,” said Ian.The whole structure can house 60 solar panels, but three panels have been left off so that the staff can see out the office windows.

That leaves 57 panels, which Ian says can produce about 13kW of free electricity.Combined with the panels they already have on the roof of the showroom, (plus some more to come) that is enough to power about 6 houses (28kW).Ian says they built the system to feed power back into the grid, as well as having an on-site display of the technology they use.“The BYD solar panels we use are brilliant. They produce over 20 per cent more power than other solar systems.“Our next project is a sun-tracker system which will follow the sun from east to west, which improves the electricity output by 30 per cent or more,” said Ian.

Such a large installation isn’t for the average backyard, but if someone has the need for a lot of electricity, Ian says that a system like this one isn’t such a crazy idea.“For someone like an irrigator or someone else who uses a lot of electricity, a bigger array like this will work for them. But it’s best if they – or anyone thinking of solar power – come and speak with us first.”

Mooloolah LandslipsLandslips are still causing havoc at the headwaters of Hell Hole Creek and Mooloolah River. The Healthy Waterways Eco-system Health Monitoring report (EHMP) registered a decline in waterway health from a B+ to C in the fresh water reaches and stayed at a stable B- for the estuary.The main reason for the decline is the movement of overland silt and nutrients, particularly from the slip areas moving into the waterways. The EHMP report gives a good indication of how our rivers can bounce back from rain events but does not monitor for weekly activity or silt build up in the river bed.One of the major concerns is the build up of silt in the river bed from the landslips that affects the whole Mooloolah River system. This can eventually cause increased flooding due to the river not being able to hold as much water in rain events and also causes shallowing of the river causing warmer water, a concentration of nutrients and does not provide a healthy eco-system for aquatic species.MRWL, in partnership with landowners, Sunshine Coast Council, SEQ Catchments and the Farmflo project, have come together to discuss and assess the landslip issues. We have projects in the pipeline to extend MRWL’s previous tree plants and to also de-water dams and re-direct water away from the slip areas. This will help to dry out the area to give the trees a good chance to get their roots down.Rain events certainly don’t help and we have to work around these to try to secure the soil to the land so it does not pollute our waterways.It’s a complicated project that needs money and many people’s expertise to make sure whatever is done has a positive effect. MRWL have been working on the landslips for over eight years and through grants and Green Army Farmflo we have planted thousands of trees on the landslip sites.Be assured that we are doing everything we can with the small amount of money we have. If there was money to buy the property at the top of the slip for re-vegetation purposes then we will certainly have a better chance of securing the slips for the future.Until then we will continue to do what we can with the resources we have.

Out and AboutA great night was had by all at the annual Glasshouse District Cricket Club Sportsman’s Dinner. We have an enthusiastic sporting community in the Glass House electorate and this dinner was well attended by many of them. This year the guests of honour were none other than cricketer Mike Whitney and NSW Rugby League great Tommy Raudonikis. This week it was my pleasure to participate in the Glasshouse Country Christian College middle school awards night and personally congratulate some of the standout students for 2012 on a job well done. During the same afternoon while in Glasshouse I was able to call in on the monthly Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce meeting where members are gearing up for a busy Christmas period. Remember to do as much of your Christmas shopping locally as you can because every little bit helps to keep our small businesses in operation.EDA Vets travel free on public transportAll Queensland veterans living with extreme disablement will soon be able to travel for free on public transport services across Queensland. From January 1 2013, veterans who hold a Commonwealth Veterans’ Affairs Repatriation Health Card – for All Conditions (Gold) which is embossed with EDA (Extreme Disablement Adjustment) will be able to apply for a travel pass. The current free travel pass is already available to totally and permanently incapacitated veterans and will now be extended to EDA veterans. Eligible veterans will be entitled to travel for free on TransLink bus, rail and ferry services in South East Queensland (excluding Airtrain) and urban bus and ferry services in regional Queensland. Coal seam gas On Wednesday the 7.30 Report broadcast an item regarding recent research on emissions resulting from coal seam gas wells. Apparently, evidence was found of higher than background levels of methane gas in the Tara region. Methane is a serious cause of global warming, causing 27 times more warming per kilogram than carbon dioxide. This study parallels that carried out in the USA, which found that leakage of methane from coal seam gas wellheads accounted for four per cent of total gas extractions. The result of this is that far from being a lesser cause of global warming, the use of coal seam gas in lieu of burning coal will not, in any way, reduce global warming. In addition, the USA study found higher than background levels of hydrocarbons, which are carcinogenic, at wellheads. Should there be a moratorium on further development of coal seam gas exploration and extraction. Of Course!

All heroesI was both surprised and excited when I saw the photo included in the article ‘A close band of brothers’ in the November 7 edition of GCNews. Jack Barr is my grandfather and of course his two brothers Alex and Jim are my great uncles. I have that exact photo on my wall and I take great pride in their service to this great country. It followed from the previous edition; the article submitted by Helen Page when she visited the war graves of the Gilvear brothers in France, also my great uncles on the other side of my family. It's on my ‘bucket list’ to visit their graves also. They were all heroes in my view. Thank you for the lovely article.

Doesn’t make senseWe have waited patiently for some years now for the Supa IGA store and other shops to be built on the new site in the Glasshouse Mountains Township.I am led to believe it is being delayed because Main Roads have put a hold on part of the new store land, which would also cut the RSL building and grounds in half and the new Info Centre would lose a slice of its new car park.Why they did not plan on this upgrade using land from across the road I do not understand.Also I cannot see the Government spending money on a four lane road on this end of the Glass house Mountains Tourist Drive when the Bruce Highway needs to be upgraded to six lanes.This six lane highway will be essential when the Caloundra South development finally goes ahead.

Glossy Black Cockatoo Calyptorhynchus lathamiContributed by Gwen MalcolmI am certain that everyone has seen or heard the raucous calls of the huge Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus funereus, as they fly overhead. However you may also have been lucky enough to spot their much quieter ‘cousins’ the Glossy Black Cockatoo. These are smaller birds, brownish/black in colour, with a bulbous beak, and no crest. Females and juveniles usually have yellow markings around the head and all have red/orange bars under the tail feathers. They are not to be confused with the larger Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus banksii, which is mostly found further west.The Glossy Black Cockatoo is one of our most endangered cockatoo species and is listed as ‘vulnerable’ in south east Queensland. Unlike most other species, this cockatoo can often be approached when feeding, and can be observed at close range. The only evidence of their presence may the cracking sound they make as they feed on the seeds of the cones of Allocasuarinas.Why, you might ask, are these birds endangered when the Yellow Tailed Cockatoos appear to be relatively common? The Glossy Black feeds solely on the seeds of two species of Allocasuarina found in our area. Unfortunately these trees have long been considered ‘rubbish vegetation’ and are usually cleared to make way for more attractive species. Both Allocasuarina littoralis and Allocasuarina torulosa are grown in the GMAN nursery to help redress the balance. Not only are these the sole food source, but check out the size of the seeds – not the cones! The seeds are tiny so lots are needed for a meal. Pick a cone and keep it dry for a few days and the little winged seeds will drop out! Another interesting fact is that Glossy Blacks will return time and time again to the same tree to feed, even though there may be other trees with seed close by. We can all monitor the presence of these birds by checking under She Oaks for chewed seeds indicating feed trees. There is even a name for these chewed seeds---Orts.

P is for PassifloraThere are over 500 reasons to be interested in the genus Passiflora. The obvious one is the flavour of the passionfruit. The others are the complex and beautiful flowers that develop on each of the 500 different species.Passiflora species occur naturally throughout the tropical regions of the world, with the exception of Africa. South America is home to the bulk of them, though Australia is home to four species, including the attractive Paurantia whose flowers start off white then turn pink and red with age.The name was given to this genus as the various parts of the flower were seen to represent the Passion of Christ in the 15 century.In general, Passiflora are fast growing vines which climb with the aid of tendrils. A few are twining shrubs and some stick to the ground.All Passiflora plants produce fruit. Sizes vary from the size of a pea up to the Granadilla (p. quadrangularis) which is the size of a football. While many Passiflora have edible fruit, some are poisonous. Avoid eating any in the wild unless you have researched them first.For the home gardener, the most common are the purple or black Passionfruit (P. edulis) and the yellow Passionfruit (P. flavicarpa).The reasons to love this plant increase when you take into account the ease with which this genus can be hybridised. Cross pollination with the use of a small paint brush can produce some exciting

results. The results of experiments with this plant can be seen quite quickly making it ideal for beginner breeders.Passionfruit plants like humus rich well drained soil with plenty of summer water. They have a vigorous and wide ranging root system (as big as the vines are long). Feed with a high potassium fertiliser when the plant commences flowering.Plant in a sunny position to ensure a healthy plant and a bountiful crop. One of my vines loses the sun mid afternoon from March onwards. Any fruit on the plant at this time will fail to ripen. Provide the vine with a trellis, shed or frame to grow over. Even a water tank will be suitable and this has the added bonus of keeping the tank cool during the hotter months.Aside from the fruit, the leaves and the flower are used in medicinal preparations. They have many properties including calmative and anti-inflammatory actions. Our chooks like to eat the leaves, though I can never tell if the calmative action is working as they seem to get so excited for more leaves. Glossy Blacks require large trees with hollows to breed, and lay one single egg every two years. The chick takes up to 90 days to hatch and all birds are vulnerable to attack by predators, especially when drinking from water sources. Clearing for farm land and development are a threat to their continuing existence. For the last three years GMAN members have taken part in the annual survey of Glossy Black Cockatoos in our area. While we have yet to see a cockatoo on our day long monitoring, we have found evidence of a number of feed trees.Keep watch for either cockatoos or their feed trees and I would welcome reports of any sightings.For further information on the Glossy Black Cockatoo please check the website www glossyblack.org.au

Encouragement for Parents (Part 2)A few years ago I wrote in this column about parenting, and because many of our readers are parents I wanted to continue on this topic a bit…One of the things that we as parents often struggle with is finding a way of juggling our demands. I was jotting down some things on paper the other night and it looked a bit like this….

As you can see there can be quite a lot of demands on us mums and dads. Some of these are more important than others – and at the end of the day we all have a different perspective on what is more important than other things.What can happen though, is that we either get overwhelmed by the demands we have on us or

ignore them – neither of these options are very good.As I pondered this dilemma it occurred to me that I hadn’t included God in my diagram… I thought to myself, where is God in this picture? Then I remembered that God reminds us again and again in the bible that he is always with us. Check out these bible verses – Joshua 1 verse 9 and 1 Peter 5 verse 7.As we daily do our best to care for our kids, spend time with our loved ones, work at our jobs and pay the bills, we need to always remember that God is with us and he can lead us in all that we do. I believe that God will give us wisdom in situations that we don’t know how to handle, comfort us in times of trial and difficulty and can give us love to share with those around us when we don’t feel like it. We just need to pray.God bless you and your family and have a great Christmas!

The fine weather saw 55 players compete in a Stableford competition for trophies generously donated by Shirley Cooper and Rosemary Collins. Contributed by Jenny MorrisOur Division 3 Monday night team, the Mystics lost their semi final on November 19. Unfortunately somebody has to lose, so good luck in the next season. Congratulations to the Ballinger team and good luck next game.On a brighter note the Club has been lucky enough to receive a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council for $7,500 to go towards the resurfacing of our three tennis courts.This has been needed doing for some time now, so we are all excited about this news. The courts will be completed sometime in January in readiness for the new season starting in February, 2013. We wish to thank the Sunshine Coast Council for their support over the years.

Trophy BoxThe Trophy Box was made by Andy Henry of the Beerwah Men’s Shed. He also made a beautiful replica tennis racquet out of pine and with a

silky oak handle earlier in the year. The Club thanks him for his expertise. They both look great displayed on our tennis club wall.The trophy was presented to the club by Des James and his family. His father, Vivian James, won this trophy in 1930 in the Men’s Open Singles event in the Palmwoods and District Tennis Association competition. An excerpt from Des James’ report tells an interesting story:-‘Vivian James, my Dad, was Head Teacher of the Glenview State School from 01.08.1927 until 01.07.1944. He came from Rockhampton at age 29. He delighted, with satisfaction, telling his family that he won the C Grade, B Grade and A Grade Singles in succeeding years at Palmwoods.”Vivian James was also the Captain of the Glenview Tennis Club in the early years of our club. In 1931 he married Olive Stevens, local daughter of George and Margaret Stevens. For many years they played tennis on the Glenview School court and in the Landsborough and District Tennis Fixtures. In those days tennis was played extensively in the district.

Fay Raven who came in with a score of 35 points.Second Division was won by Meg Ferran with a score of 35 points, on a countback from Barb Whitfield, also on 35 points. The ball rundown went to 31. Number 2 proved a bit elusive, with no one getting the NTP on that hole. Ruth Bowie took out the 5th, Jackie Collinson got the 16th and Andrea Campbell scored the 18th. Our golfing year is winding down with only two Thursday games until we break up for the year. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing.
