Recent attacks on livestock at Peachester serves as a reminder that all landholders – big and small – in rural and semi-rural areas need to be aware of the impacts that wild dogs can have and the measures they can take to reduce the likelihood of further problems.Grahame Jackson runs a small farm in London Creek Road at Peachester, grazing cattle and sheep, but last week he lost 11 sheep to wild dog attacks over three nights.“I’ve had the property for almost three years and this is the first time we’ve had problems this big.“These wild dogs are cruel killers and it’s heartbreaking to see the damage they can do,” he said.Grahame contacted the Sunshine Coast Council customer service on 5475 7272 and logged a wild dog incident on their system.Straight away, a response officer contacted Grahame and organised to meet him to assess the property, look at how his self-protection could be improved and to show him how to take action himself through trapping.

Peachester farmer devasted as wild dogs kill livestock

A Council spokesperson said that they offer assistance and support to landholders who have problems with wild dogs – including prevention advice, help with trapping and organising broader 1080 baiting programs.“Next month Council is coordinating over 20 landholder baiting groups across rural areas to help reduce the wild dog populations on a broader scale,” the Council spokesperson said.

Save the iconic Steve Irwin Way forestLocal residents – as well as many others across the Sunshine Coast – are outraged at plans by the State Government to destroy up to 75 hectares of important koala habitat at the north end of Steve Irwin Way.The Department of Transport and Main Roads recently released their updated plans for the Caloundra Road / Steve Irwin Way interchange with the Bruce Highway, however the results aren’t kind to the local environment.In response, outraged locals and community groups have formed themselves into a positive action group called ‘Save the Iconic Forest at the North End of Steve Irwin Way’.Lisa Malcolm from the group explained that koalas are a threatened species and there may only be around 100 left on the Sunshine Coast.“Apart from koalas, the iconic Steve Irwin Way forest is also home to other threatened species placing them at serious risk from the proposed redevelopment of the Bruce Highway's Caloundra interchange,” she said.According to Lisa, this area is also rich in cultural heritage and local history, and the proposed road would harm some of the very things that this community values.The proposed road would pretty much take out three great Aussie icons at once, the koalas, Steve Irwin Way, and the Ettamogah Pub would be losing its vital highway access, said Lisa.“As one local put it to me – ‘it's just not Aussie mate’,” she said.Across the entire Sunshine Coast community, people are showing their disgust at the State Governments decision by supporting the Save the Iconic Forest at the North End of Steve Irwin Way group.

“We understand the need for road improvements, but this fragment of nature is a gift, and the fact it still remains as a public asset is a blessing.“We really need to stop destroying our natural assets. It's time for that little part inside us that is crying ‘enough is enough’ to speak up on this issue,” said another member of the group.To raise awareness and work on a plan of action, the group is holding a public meeting on May 18 at 10.00am in Jowarra Park (which is right next to Daisy’s Place), Steve Irwin Way at Glenview.The group invites everyone to come to their information and awareness morning.“Come along to find out more about what is happening with the forest and how you can help to protect this special part of our local environment – before it’s too late and another special place has been needlessly destroyed,” said Lisa.For more information, check out their Facebook site – just search for ‘save the iconic forest’.

On Saturday, May 4 a crowd of around 500 people attended the funeral of well-known local legend Nev Anning. While we are not able to include all of the words of admiration that were spoken on that day we have gathered some of the tributes people shared with us and a collection of recent photos from the pages of Glasshouse Country News.Nev Anning was an icon of our RSL, he was a highly regarded and respected member, and it was an honour to have known him. Nev was one of those people who always had a smile on his face and nothing was too much trouble. He will be sadly missed by the sub-branch and all that knew him.

Landsborough Police Station not closingBy Senior Sergeant Bruce DuckOver the past month I have received a number of inquiries from media outlets and concerned members of the public in respect to the alleged closure of the Landsborough Police Station.The Landsborough Police Station has not closed and will not be closing in the foreseeable future. In order to streamline the operational processes and core policing responsibilities, the administrative practices have been combined with the Beerwah Police division. As a result, all office inquiries are to be conducted at the Beerwah Police station between the hours of 0800 – 1600 on weekdays.Police officers continue to work from the Landsborough Police Station and respond to policing requirements in the community as needed. The 24 hour ‘blue’ police phone is located at the front of the station and accessible to members of the community for assistance.To assist with delivering professional and timely service to the community, members of the public can contact Policelink by phoning 131 444, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There you will speak with specifically trained client service officers who can assist you with your non-urgent incident report or your general enquiry.Policelink enhances the services the Queensland Police provides by allowing police officers more time to perform operational duties and improve front line response times.

From March, four extra officers have been assigned to the Glass House area, in order to focus primarily on traffic enforcement.

Recognise the theme for forumsIn the coming years, Australians will have the opportunity to change the constitution, in a referendum of the people. The referendum aims to remove racial discrimination and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Proposed changes

to Australia’s constitution have received support from community organisations nation-wide, as well as bipartisan support.The University of the Sunshine Coast, in collaboration with Mimburi Upper Mary Aboriginal Association Inc., and Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, are holding three public forums to discuss the referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the constitution.These three public events will provide the community with a chance to be informed and ask questions about the referendum to change Australia’s highest legal document, the Constitution.The importance of raising awareness about the upcoming referendum is the driving force behind a collaborative working group representing local community organisations and the university.The pursuit of raising public awareness of constitutional recognition was initiated by Laina McCoy, a social science student at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Laina approached Holly Aston of the Hinterland Community Development Association at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, and with USC social work student, Will Jeffries, put together a proposal. They successfully applied for funding, and have since partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast. This partnership created the opportunity to raise awareness through three public forums discussing constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.Come along to the forums to hear from guest speakers and discuss what the proposed changes to the constitution mean for our country and how it will impact on all Australians.The first two events will be held locally this month on Wednesday, May 29 from 6.00pm – 8.00pm Innovation Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast, and Friday, May 31 from 6.00 – 8.00pm at the Maleny Community Centre.

Books for bubsContribution by Margaret Thompson - Friends of Beerwah Library Friends of Beerwah Library have been busy sewing beautiful, one of a kind, book bags which make superb gifts for a new born. In support of Beerwah Library’s focus on early literacy through the ‘Ten minutes a Day’ programs, in particular ‘Baby Rhyme Time’, the FOBL came up with this idea as a fund raiser as well as a way to promote the idea of reading to baby from day one.

Baby Rhyme Time provides practical ideas on using stories, rhymes, songs and music to help children under two years develop early literacy skills.Each bag comes gift wrapped with a beautiful tag and contains an age appropriate book which is the surprise. The recent koala presentation and charity fundraiser by Pine Rivers Koala advocate, Vanda Grabowski, benefited from the sale of bags featuring Australian animals.The bags are for sale at Beerwah Library. For $10.00 this is good value and all proceeds go right back to the Library to purchase items to keep our Library space up to date. Fabrics for the project have been donated so this is a wonderful use for those beautiful patchwork fabrics so many have not wanted to part with but perhaps are happy to see them recycled in this way.

Caloundra Family History Research The general meeting of Caloundra Family History Research, to be held on Thursday, May 16 will celebrate the group’s 20th birthday. Instead of a guest speaker, members will display an ancestral antique and tell the audience of the great historical importance of the piece to their family. A birthday cake will be enjoyed during afternoon tea.On Saturday, May 25, the group will have two guest speakers during the day, when they host the History Queensland AGM. Commencing at 9.30am in the Guide Hut, Arthur Street, Caloundra, the entry fee is $20.00, which includes morning and afternoon teas, as well as lunch. The speakers are local and knowledgeable historians. During the morning session, Ms Julanne Neal’s presentation will be ‘A Brief History of Caloundra’.

Following lunch, Ms Chrissy Fletcher will do a presentation on the popular ‘Adopt-a-Digger’ Project that she instigated and administers. Glass House volunteers we say ‘Thanks a Million’The fourth annual Glass House Volunteer Awards were held to recognise the contribution by many volunteers across the Glass House electorate.Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP held his annual ceremony and afternoon tea to coincide with National Volunteers Week as a way of saying ‘thank you’ to the many volunteers in his community.“I am constantly amazed and impressed by the dedication these volunteers show to our community and I can’t think of a better way to thank them than to host a ceremony that publicly recognises all of their hard work.“Yet again this year I was stunned by the amount of nominations put forward - it really goes to show how many people we have in our community that work behind the scenes to make our sporting groups, schools and community based organisations keep ticking over.“All that is left to say is ‘Thanks a Million,” Mr Powell said.The local community groups that nominated volunteers included Beerburrum State School - Tracey James, Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch - Hudson Newitt, Friends of Bankfoot House - Robyn Gillinder, Peachester History Committee - Graham and Una Riddel, Peter Farrell - nominated by Sunshine Girls and Vegan Warriors - Jaylene Musgrave

This acknowledgement is recognised at their annual ‘Chaplaincy Thankyou Breakfast’ held at Beerwah High in the Performing Arts Centre.The talented Year 11 and 12 Catering and Hospitality students put in an amazing effort in creating lots of gourmet delights to serve at the breakfast.During the morning, Mike Turner, the Beerwah High Chaplain and Glenda McSwain, presented a number of groups with certificates of appreciation for their on-going commitment to what has been a very success local initiative.Beerwah High was one of the first high schools in Queensland to have a school chaplain, the first meeting to work on creating the position was held 20 years ago in May 1993.Initially the role was filled by Peter Herbert, followed by Justin Evans and since 2007 Mike Turner has taken on the role. More recently Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Committee has helped to create positions for Chaplains in nearly all of our primary schools as well.

Re ‘Well it's started’ Volume 27 - 48 Pam Lever and Editor's noteHow soon we forget. Elections, take the last Sunshine Coast Council Elections, what a farce they were.Not only did our local boys do the complete wrong thing, the now mayor led the way in ignorance and complete disregard for rules and anything else. There was not one telephone post, school or railway fence he missed with his signage, so who cares? Our mayor won't.I personally contacted our council and complained on various occasions and also rang personally making complaints, I still await an answer, typical. You would think I should have learned, but we do live with hope and I like to think there is someone with a little decency in our midst, but obviously not.In respect of the poster depicting the man taking the reins of the Liberal position, he may require a lot more than posters. The dinosaur man could very easily breeze in and that will make them stand up and take notice, someone who will actually do something for us, not just themselves.

Visual pollution – I agreeIn regard to the letter in last week’s paper about the visual pollution we are already being subjected to in the lead up to the September election.Particularly those awful larger than life-sized placards of the former Federal member for Longman, who is now standing for the seat of Fisher. Mr Brough states that his signs are within the letter of the law. However, they are a timely reminder of Mr Brough’s attitude to the residents of this electorate… we are going to get his cheesy visage in our faces, going north and south whether we want them or not.It appears that these placards may exemplify an attitude that whether or not they are within the ‘spirit’ of the law, whether or not they are a nuisance, is irrelevant to a man who is claiming he wants to represent us. If any of us had forgotten why Mr Brough was not reelected last time he stood here, we now have a reminder of his ‘form’.I know those signs have jogged my memory.

Mooloolah definitely has talentI am a resident in Mooloolah and I would like to pass on my thanks to the Mooloolah Community group who organise the 'Performing Our Arts Off’ evenings at the Mooloolah Hall.Mooloolah has got talent, and it's not just in the array of diverse entertainers that get up on stage, it's the team of wonderful volunteers from the Mooloolah Community group who had the vision to create this opportunity for artists to showcase their talents and for us to enjoy. They truly make the evening a success.We have been coming along to the Performing our Arts Off evening from back when they started and were called Mooloolah's got talent. We have

enjoyed every one so much, each time being amazed by the caliber of the entertainers. We have seen too many to remember all their names. They have ranged in styles and ages, from the tiny little girl who did the dance routine, to the senior gentleman on the piano accordion. Some standouts for us have been the beautiful singing by Miss Julie from the Mooloolah kindy, Dave with his flying V electric guitar, and all the other wonderful guitarists who have played. The lady soprano opera singer was just amazing, and the hand carved woodwind player just stopped us all, carrying our spirits higher with the beautiful sounds, the artistic images from Bibiana's photo slideshow add to the visual delights and then Sonia and the Sonics with their power punching groove which makes you get up and move. Thanks also to the talented gentleman on the big double bass and the lady on drums who seem so adaptable as they make all the performers sound good with their backing rythyms.Thanks to the team of volunteers who make the evening so enjoyable each time we have attended. We love the hotdogs, nachos, dahl and rice. Picture drawing and games for the kids, and the drumming workshop last time our daughter really enjoyed that. Thanks, we love your work!To all my neighbours, I encourage you to turn off the TV and the play station and come along and experience some live entertainment. Cheer and clap and be moved as we were by their passion, rhythm and fun. See you there on Saturday night (May 18) Mooloolah Hall.

Signage may not be legalIn our last edition, we ran a ‘You Said It’ letter querying the requirements of election signage, specifically mentioning those of Mal Brough on Steve Irwin Way.Mr Brough advised us that the billboard signage was not election signage but more of an informational format, and that the signage met Council requirements.Since then we have contacted Council about signage requirements generally, and more specifically about Mr Brough’s.A Council spokesperson advised us that they are working on new rules for election signage and that Council intends to have an approved amended local law clearly setting out election signage rules in June.GCNews will bring you more on this at that time.In regard to the billboards on Steve Irwin Way, it would appear Council approval is only provided for the original Setters Fruit and Vegetable Shop signage and not for third party advertising.

“Any signage on this site should be advertising for only the approved use, which was a fruit and vegetable shop,” said the Council spokesperson.“Any third party advertising devices advertising a business off the site is not permitted and would constitute a third party adverting device.“An impact assessable application would be required for a Third Party Advertising Device. It is unlikely that such an application for third party adverting devices would be supported.“In relation to the sign further to the south ‘Dairy Farmers’. There is no record of any approval or sign licence for this sign.“It looks as if this was previously used for third party advertising. However, as this sign is unauthorised and if it is intended to advertise for third party purposes an impact assessable application for an Operational Works - Third Party Advertising Device would be required.“A fee of $1,511.00 would be required and a planning report from a town planner to justify the application,” concluded the spokesperson.We passed this information on to Mr Brough and asked him to provide a comment.Mr Brough responded … ‘I was disappointed to read Pam Lever’s letter complaining about my billboards. In the past four months I have been contacted by more than 100 locals seeking assistance with federal issues. Many of these have been from the hinterland. If the billboards assisted them to seek my help, then they have done their job.’Unfortunately, Mr Brough did not answer the issue of the signs not having Council approvals.

Welcome back to sun on the Sunshine CoastFinally after so many dark rainy days, the sun has graced us with its presence. During the last school holidays, I think we had about three sunny days out of the 14. Pretty sad, right?Well now that the lovely sun is back, it is time to catch some Vitamin D, but don’t forget the sunscreen. Last time the sun peeped out I came back from the beach looking like a very ripe tomato! Not a pretty sight.It has been a long year of constantly postponing sunny day activities but now it’s time to get back to normal. Normal on the Sunshine Coast means barbecues by a hinterland river or picnics at the beach and so far I’ve managed one out of the two activities. I even caught two fish! They may have only been 10cm but they were still fish. For me, the best thing about the returning sunshine is the activity going on in my own backyard. What does a girl do when her dad has brilliant carpentry skills and she is a budding artist? Beg for an art studio of course! So far the plans are on schedule and soon I’ll have a home away from home to fill with all my paintings, drawings and maybe even a secret stash of chocolate.Keep up the sun Sunny Sunshine Coast!

Well done Sarah!

Cross country excitementLandsborough State School held their annual Cross Country Carnival. There was a lot of excitement as all of the students gathered on the school oval for the event. It was a sea of blue, yellow and red as the students wore their sports house colours and cheered loudly as each race was run. There were many exhausted runners at the end of the course. Congratulations to all of the students for having a go and trying hard to earn points for their house. The winning sports house was Burgess, however there were also many fantastic individual performances achieved on the day.

Luka off to New ZealandLandsborough State School Prep student, Luka Codlin, has been selected to ride in the Australian team at the 2013 BMX World Titles. This event will be held in Auckland, New Zealand during July.Luka, who is only five years old, started BMX in February 2012 with great passion to ride bikes. He took to it like a duck to water. Over the past 12 months he has competed in many open days across the southern zone. He trains once a week at the Mooloolah BMX track and is a member of the Hinterland BMX Club.Early this month, Luka competed in the 2013 Australian BMX Titles at Chandler where he got to meet Olympians Caroline Buchanan, Sam Willoughby, Lauren Reynolds and Brian Kirkham.On Wednesday, May 1, Luka competed in the pre titles event, riding three moto's and placing 4th, 3rd and 3rd and he was awarded a glass trophy for his efforts.The following day, he raced in the Australian BMX Titles against 36 other riders in the five to six year old boy’s category. The top 16 riders would gain themselves a place on the Australian team. Luka placed 3rd, 2nd, 2nd and 1st in his moto's and was awarded a medal and a BMX plate.The next 24 hours seemed to go so slowly, as he awaited a call to see if he had made the team.It's now official. At only five years of age, Luka received the exciting news that he had been selected to wear the green and gold jersey and will represent his country at the 2013 World Titles. How Peter changed his futurePeter Pratt of Glass House Mountains was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2005 and after following his doctor’s advice for six years he saw little improvement in his day-to-day life.Then one day after watching a documentary he realised he was ready to take control of his health and 13 months later, he takes no medication for diabetes, weighs 23 kilograms less, (losing 12 kilograms in the first 30 days, and then another 11 kilograms in the next two months) and his blood sugar is in a healthy range. Inspired by a Joe Cross documentary ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’ Peter was motivated to do an extended vegetable juice fast which allowed his sugar levels to stabilise and become normal.Peter said at the end of the juice fast he was able to change what he was traditionally eating to a non processed whole foods diet.“It was easy at the time and I created a long term lifestyle change,” he said.“When I first started the fast, my biggest fear was being hungry. Interestingly once the sugar withdrawals were finished with I found that hunger was not an issue,” Peter said.Breaking the sugar addiction took Peter three days – which he admits was really difficult, but clearly worth it in the long term.“Processed sugar is an extremely addictive substance; our foods today are mainly processed.“The rule is that any processed foods for diabetics are bad as they either contain sugar or turn into sugar quickly when ingested (what is known as a high GI food),” Peter said.With the success that he found, Peter is now assisting others to make permanent and lasting changes to their own health.Peter has developed a free three month program based on his experience and medical

research and has shared it with a small group of individuals who have also been impressed with their results."The most important thing to stress is that this is not a program that replaces the doctor," Peter said. Glass House Mountains local Trevor Cave who took part in the last program has been really pleased with his results. He has lost 12kg which means he is back to the weight he was when he left school and his blood sugar level are right down and he feels excellent. It’s National Volunteer Week from May 13 to 19 and it’s an important time to recognise Sunshine Coast volunteers for their service to the community over the past 12 months. We are lucky as a region to have so many groups and individuals who freely give their time, skill and passion to community events, programs, organisations, disaster and emergency efforts. I’d like to particularly thank all of the groups and individuals who give so generously of their time to make an important difference to the quality of life in Division 1.A new community group with representatives from all of our Glasshouse Country townships has now emerged from the Beerwah Place + process to start work on the implementation of the Community Action Plan. It’s early days, but the group will decide priorities and work to implement projects that were highlighted during the community consultation process. I’m sure they will go from strength to strength. Anyone can be part of the group so please contact me if you are interested in attending the next meeting on June 6 at 6.00pm at the Beerwah Sportsground.I met with members of the Landsborough Area Community Association recently and we talked about the number of opportunities and challenges for our local area. LACA manage Morris House and the CWA building and offer a comprehensive social information program including computer training courses, venue bookings and hire. They were recently awarded a grant for a small loan scheme and I’d like to commend and congratulate them on their achievements that benefit the whole community. We talked about a range of matters from town planning and bus shelters to streetscaping and Skippy Park and I look forward to working with them to get more outcomes on the ground for the Landsborough community.Out and aboutI’ll be at the Beerwah Library to catch up with locals on Friday, May 24 from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. I will be in Glass House and Peachester on Saturday, May 18 distributing free shrubs, trees and native tube stock to any residents who are looking to add to their garden. For our next Mooloolah breakfast meeting on June 6 we’ll be inviting a State Government representative to come along and hear some of the concerns from the community regarding the Bruce Highway upgrade from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway exit. Several locals have expressed concerns about the current design for the upgrade and this will be a great opportunity to raise the issues with the Department. We’ll also have the Officer in Charge at Landsborough Police attending the next meeting to talk about police matters. Remember that the sequence for meetings has changed and it’s now the first Thursday of every month at 7.30am at Thunderbird Café.At the last meeting we talked about Martin Rungert Park as some residents would like to have some of the trees removed from the park to provide an open sunnier space. There was consensus from the Mooloolah group that it’s preferable to keep the trees for the shade benefits they provide particularly for kids playing in the park.There’s a tree planting day at the Mooloolah Valley Recreation Grounds and anyone keen to help out can contact Mooloolah Waterwatch.The analogue TV signal will be shutting down on the Coast at the end of May and council is expecting a rush of unwanted TVs at our resource recovery centres. That’s why we’re having another series of free electric waste recycling days at council landfills and resource recovery centres across the region in June. Recycle your old equipment free of charge by dropping it off at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre on June 8 and 9. Check council’s website for all the details.There are so many workshops and interesting information sessions happening at all Sunshine Coast Libraries over the next month that it’s really worthwhile finding out what they have lined up. From smoothie making sessions to literary breakfasts, there’s lots on offer and most of it’s free. You generally need to make a booking though so take the time to find out what’s on at your local library.

HappeningsOut and AboutGarden party – fundraising successLast Wednesday morning Belinda and Geoffrey Tilton’s home and garden at Glenview hosted a stylish morning tea for 65 local ladies.The ‘Frocks and Flowers’ theme was evident in the beautifully created morning tea with plenty of gorgeous floral vintage cups and saucers and lovely high tea style serving dishes.Belinda and Geoffrey, who have both lost parents to cancer, were keen to open their property to raise funds for the Cancer Council as part of the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ campaign.Mother’s Day marked the fifth anniversary for Belinda losing her mum Shirley to cancer, so to be able to do something for cancer research was very important to her.Belinda was assisted by her daughter Leah and two of her friends, Karen and Kim, in organising the event. They’d set themselves a goal of raising $1,000.00 however the event proved more successful than they had anticipated, raising over $1500.00.Guests enjoyed the day, with many keen to take a look around Belinda’s gorgeous garden and check out the beautiful mosaic art she has created.

Of mud and lenses and hopeBlindness would have been debilitating 2000 years ago. The gospels record the story of Jesus healing a man who was totally vision-impaired using a mixture of dirt and his own saliva. Jesus used a technique which seems strange to us, but those around him would have already seen it in use. The local 'healers' used this paste for all sorts of illnesses, but not for blindness. It couldn't work. But on this occasion there was a scene of delight and wonder. Not only did the man see the ‘surgeon’ who had performed this non-surgical sight restoring procedure, but the crowd also witnessed the dramatic change. We see similar dramatic results with eye surgery to replace cataracts with clear functioning lenses; need a specialised eye surgeon for that. Yes there are amazing results achieved with modern medicine. We now know that many illnesses including heart disease, some cancers, and diabetes can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle changes. Recently news has come of the decrease in the incidence of female reproductive cancers in the young women receiving the Gardasil immunisations here in Australia. Direction from

your local health practitioner, your local health educator or programs such as Quit or CHIP all help in the prevention process. But ultimately we all face the reality of our own mortality. And that is when we crave a supernatural intervention as experienced by the blind man in the gospel story. That healing only came because of the involvement and power of Jesus Christ. Not the mud or the spittle, but the presence of God. And you know what; He is there to take our outstretched hands in His waiting hands and provide the comfort and strength we need. Just one of the blessings and the confidence that comes from having Jesus as a friend.

Common bromeliads explainedBromeliads are a great drought-tolerant addition to a shady landscape with some protection from frost or freeze. The nearly 2,000 species of bromeliads provide plant lovers with an unbelievable selection of form, colour, size and blooming characteristics. Pineapples are a familiar plant in the bromeliad family, native to the American tropics. Did you know that another common member of this family is a native to Florida, USA? It’s called Spanish moss.Some of the most popular bromeliads are Neoregelia, Aechmea and Billbergia, most of which have thorns on the margins of the leaves, and the thornless Guzmania and Vriesea.Neoregelia (Neos) are probably the most popular because of their low-growing habit and wide range of vibrant colours that they flush into during the blooming season followed by the tiny flowers down inside the ‘cup’ at the centre of the plant. You can find varieties with names like Yin or Yang, Mo Peppa Please, Perfection, Grace, Painted Lady, Moulten Lava, and Hannibal Lector.Most of these prefer bright light with a few hours of early or late sun, although some can tolerate more sun than others and a few need to be grown in the full sun.Aechmeas are typically taller than Neoregelia with less-vivid leaves and are somewhat vaselike in shape. The inflorescence (or flower) usually extends well above the foliage, and comes in many forms and colours lasting several months. Many of these plants will tolerate more than six hours of sun, or full sun. Some of these you will probably find are A. fasciata, Blue Tango, Lil Harve, Shogun, Bert, and Rambo.Billbergia are typically a much narrower growing plant, the word fluted is often used to describe them, and they usually have a very bright pink bloom, which can be quite beautiful but unfortunately short-lived. They can also have striking leaf patterns and colours as well as very delicate shapes. Some of the names you may come across are Hallelujah, Delicioso, Rosea and Wendii.Guzmania and Vriesea have softer foliage than the previously discussed genera and the bonus of being thornless. Both have a long-lasting showy, colourful inflorescence. Guzmania are mostly trumpet shaped, while Vriesea have a flattened featherlike bloom spike. Vriesea are also grown for their stunning foliage. The vast majority of both of these genera grow best in shade.

Mooloolah Pony ClubClub members recently attended the PCAQ Zone 6 Championships for Dressage and Combined training at Nambour Showgrounds that were held over two days. The Championships was also a qualifier for the upcoming Queensland State Championships to be held in Proserpine this June.Zone 6 covers a large area from Kia Ora and Widgee in the North to Glasshouse in the South and 20 clubs and

close to 1,000 members.Being the largest club in the zone, Mooloolah Pony Club was heavily represented over both days with a number of outstanding results for its members.Kenja Geurts qualified for the Queensland State titles– winning the 13 – 25 year old preliminary Championship - riding Dixons Glamour

Two silver medals for RowanRowan Sutton has just competed at the Asics Australian Little Athletics Championships in Canberra.He competed in the under 15 Boys Pentathlon and achieved 3 PB’s and placed second. He also ran in the Queensland U15 relay team which also placed 2nd. Two silver medals from a national competition is an absolutely incredible achievement. Of course to get to nationals he had to compete at the Suncoast Little Athletics Regional Championships which was held back in February at the Sunshine Coast University.Rowan got first in the U15 boys Pentathlon and now holds the regional record, second in the 100m sprint and first in the 400m, which was also a new regional record. He then progressed to the Queensland State Championships held in March in Brisbane. Again he did very well with a first place in the U15 boys Pentathlon, first in the 400m and third in the 100m sprint.Rowan’s parents are very proud of his achievements and would like to think he could be a great role model for the younger athletes in our local area.

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis ClubContributed by Jenny MorrisIn late January we had arranged to have our three courts resurfaced. Because of the weather this wasn’t accomplished until late March. The courts are looking good and it is a pleasure to back playing on a great surface. It had been 12 years since they were resurfaced and they were in a state of disrepair for a while. Please come along and try out our new courts. Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council’s support through a minor grant.JuniorsOur juniors have just started their winter competition. We have been able to have five teams again this season. Umbrellas are available for the parents supporting their children and are stored in the cupboard in the clubhouse. Please put them away after the juniors have finished for the day. Good luck to all the juniors and we are glad to have so many teams again this season.AdultsThe three teams we have playing in the Monday night competition are heading into the finals with only three more matches. The Mystics are currently leading their division and the Vipers are trying to remain in the top four with the Mungrals enjoying very strong tennis in Division 1. Good luck and I know everybody is enjoying playing on our new surface.On Sunday, May 19 we are having a working bee so if you have some spare time please come along and help at around 9.00 am.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Jenny KellyOur Club Professional John Mellish was the sponsor of the Monthly Medal which saw 68 players come out on a lovely autumn day to play the Stroke event. We play in 3 Divisions with Vanessa Aland winning Division 1 with a Nett score of 73. Cecilia Proud came in with a 78 Nett to be runner up. Heather Henn won the Gross with 94 off the stick. Second Division winner was Viki Bartel with 77 Nett, runner up Shirley Cooper with 78 Nett and the Gross went to Lesley Eggleston who shot 97 off the stick. Fay Raven had the best Nett of the day to take out Division 3 with 73 Nett. Brid John was runner up on 78 Nett, with Pat Chapman winning the Gross with 110 off the stick. Kim Thode handled the fast greens with only 26 putts to take out the putting competition. NTP's went to Viki on the 2nd, Gail Gundry on 5, Margaret Zonca on 16 and Jackie Collinson took out the 18th. The ball rundown went to 80 nett. The greens staff has been working hard to get the course set up for our Club Championships which begin for the men on Saturday, May 23. Now all we need is for the rain to stay away for a while.
