This is guaranteed to be a very interesting lecture. Website: www.gge.org.uk 15/06/15: Association For The History Of Glass (A.H.G.) Spring Study Day: Glass For Eating, Drinking And Making Merry. 15th. June 2015 10:00-17:00. At The Wallace Collection. London W1U 3BN. This study day on the use of table glass of all periods is being planned in conjunction with the Glass Association (G.A.) and the Glass Circle (G.C.). Glass has always been made because people wanted to buy and use it. Without customers who wanted to use glass, there would have been no glass industries. Yet much more work has been done on production than use. Why did people choose glass instead of ceramics or pewter? Was the table glass used in homes, inns and taverns the same, or different? What difference was there between city and country; upstairs and downstairs? Such questions are often asked, but less frequently answered so it is hoped to use this opportunity to study how, why, where and when table glass was used in different eras. The cost of the day will be £12.00 (€15.00) for students, £24.00 (€30.00) for members of the A.H.G., G.A., G.C. or Friends of the Wallace Collection and £34.00 (€45.00) for non- members. Lunch is not provided, but is available locally. If you would like to contribute a paper, please contact the A.H.G. secretary, Denise Allen on Emails: [email protected] or [email protected] . The programme has yet to be finalised, please see the Website: www.historyofglass.co.uk for the latest information or ask the secretary to send you details when they are available.

02/05/1504/05/15: Sat 2nd. – Mon 4th. May 2015. G5 Hot Glass-Casting Into Zircar Moulds Workshop. Tutor: Keith Seybert. Duration: 3 Days. Participants: 6. Cost: €450.00. This three-day course will introduce you to the potential of Zircar; this 'space-age' mould material exhibits excellent surface reproduction with an optical finish. Molten glass can be poured directly into 'light weight' porous moulds with no need for "gating & venting". You will have the opportunity to ladle glass straight from the furnace and pour into preheated sculptural moulds. This is the most 'cutting edge' mould method for hot-casting your own solid sculptural forms in glass. No experience required. Ceramics and Glass : ‘Mixed Double’. The Summer School Bild-Werk Frauenau has a history of experimenting with crossover courses believing that the future is increasingly multi-disciplinary. This year is no exception with a new interdisciplinary course model on offer where clay and glass are combined. Where clay is used as part of the process towards a glass piece, or where clay and glass are united in a single artwork. The possibilities exist for border crossing! Since the beginning of the Studio Glass Movement these two materials, glass and clay, have been close friends. And reviewing today’s glass art scene we can still see that there is a strong connection between ceramic and glass. Artists who, to a greater or lesser extent, use or combine these two materials include Roni Horn, Tony Cragg, Kiki Smith, Damien Hirst, Gerhard Richter, Ai Weiwei, and Ann Wolff and Olafur Eliasson. So many artists are using glass and ceramics in art and design. This year the exhibition worldwide include at Bornholm “Biennials for Contemporary European Glass and Ceramics”, The “3rd Clay and Glass Biennale” Brae Art Gallery,

In this course, participants will work with layered flash glass to create one or two panels of stained glass. Various methods of creating imagery on glass, such as painting, sandblasting, engraving and diamond filing will be demonstrated and exploration of alternative options is encouraged. Participants will assemble one or two small panels. This class will also delve into the elusive creative process in the form of discussion. Glass Unknown: Experimentation and Discoveries in the Hot Shop Master Class with Maria Bang Espersen and Max Syron. 18 - 23 July. Fee: £655.00. (includes evening meals). For this 6 day class we will put aside all presumptions we might have about the material glass and approach it in ways one would not have thought possible. We will build up a new understanding of glass by investigating its material possibilities through playful experiments. The process of discovery and learning from the

glass itself will be the focal point, rather than an emphasis on final objects. Working in and out of the hot shop, we will let go of traditional glass-making concepts, creating and following new paths of inquiry. We will explore ephemeral, time-based, and performative aspects of glass as well as concepts such as control, value, and experience. This class is open to anyone with a curiosity for the unknown and the willingness to break some glass. This is an experimental class and we will not be teaching any technical skills. You will however, learn how to gather and handle a small amount of hot glass. For larger amounts, some assistance is available. All levels are welcome but a little experience in hot glass techniques can be beneficial. August Master Classes:

26/08/1503/09/15: Towards Purpose – kiln-formed glass, cold glass and other stuff… This class explores the territory between design and making, purpose and process master Class with Angela Thwaites. 26 August – 3 September. £900.00 (includes evening meals). We will be taking a focussed and purposeful approach using design and making processes to create 3D glass outcomes. As well as material knowledge and skills with glass there will be an emphasis on design development. The area surrounding North Lands is an important source of departure points for idea generation so we will be going out from the workshops on research journeys. The class will be led by Angela, supported by a cold working expert, and a designer interested in exploring glass. We will discuss and guide the purpose and development of your projects and you will develop skills and confidence working with specialist glass processes. There will be visits, demonstrations, presentations and group discussions to facilitate your individual ideas and practical exploration. During the 9 days, there will be an opportunity to experience hot glass through a mutual student swap with the concurrently running hot glass master class led by James Maskrey. There will also be one day midway through when you will be able to make arrangements for further exploring the locality. You will carry out a range of considered experiments in material and bring one idea to a clear conclusion. We will be working on a modest scale to enable this conclusion to be at a high level of resolution and finish. You will be expected to give a 5 minute visual presentation to introduce yourself to the group within the first couple of days and to show the journey of your project at the end of the class. Classes run from 09:00 – 17:30 and participants can work in the studios up until 22:00.

26/08/1503/09/15: Narrating Process Master Class with James Maskrey. 26 August – 3 September. £900.00 (includes evening meals). The main aim of this workshop is to cultivate skills and develop narrative for participants’ work. Using our technical abilities, sourced objects, images, or text we will search for meanings in our pieces. These could be imagined, they could be factual, but at the heart of the process will be making and story-telling. We will concentrate on material, process and idea. Using and developing traditional glass-blowing skills, compiled materials and our combined imaginations we will celebrate these artefacts to spin tales of personal experience, historical fact or elaborate hoax. We will aim to push ourselves through enriching our glass techniques and developing original ideas to produce pieces of work embracing both skill and narrative. During the 9 days, there will be an opportunity to experience expert guidance for cold working glass through a mutual student swap with the concurrently running master class led by Angela Thwaites. There will also be one day midway through when you will be able to make arrangements for further exploring the locality. About James Maskrey: James Maskrey has a career in hot glass spanning over 20 years. He has a Classes run from 09:00 – 17:30 and participants can work in the studios up until 22:00. Glass Blowing Equipment For Sale: Hi Alan, Could you please include the following for the next newsletter/email that's going out. I'm down to the last few things to sell. 1x Electric Glass Melting Furnace. 50Amp 220V Single Phase 207lb crucible. Very economic and efficient- I found it cost less than half the running cost of a gas furnace, quickly paid for itself in gas savings and gave a wonderful quality melt on a par with Edinburgh Crystal. Has only had approx 10 months use and has new Kanthal APM(top quality-long lasting) elements fitted but never run. Has a compressed air, foot pedal controlled door, electronic temperature control panel. Very quiet furnace- you can talk and be heard!! 1 x Glory Hole- 18'' split door complete with Gibberson burner(burner could use a new ceramic head-but worked fine for us as is) and fan. Basically plug in and go! It really heats up quickly and is a quiet glory hole. I loved working at it. Hasn't had much use- 10 months. Complete package- cylinder body, split doors, burner, fan, all built onto it's own stand. 1x Large Annealing lehr- Skandia Ovnen 16Amp 10kW. This is an old friend of mine. Been with me from the start but is extremely reliable and easy to work with. Counterweight door. Door lifts up-so needs height. Externally shows signs of age-Scratches etc(needs a lick of hammerite!)but inside is in excellent condition and as I've said-very reliable. Excellent annealing. No cold spots. Was converted from 3- phase to single phase, but can easily be reversed. Large selection of insulating furnace bricks.(approximately 500). I saved all the best condition brickwork when I dismantled my gas furnace. Ideal for furnace maintenance or if you are building a furnace. Contact- Robbie Campbell. Mob: 07790 768 234. Smith, Requesting Help: I graduated last year from Nottingham Trent University with a B.A. (Hons.) in Decorative Arts and am continuing to work hard within the creative industry. My Geometric Glass Pendant Lighting has emerged in to the design industry (featured at New Designers last year), and I have now started a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to finalise the designs and launch in to retail. Unfortunately I can't do this alone which is why I need your support, along with all other glass based artists and creatives to help me pursue in my career and push the work out there. The funding will provide investments into faster production methods and redeveloping the light fitting. Please help fund the project by visiting Website: www.kickstarter.com/projects/1429512698/geometric-pendants Once complete, I'll be on the look out to employ glass blowers and cold workers, keeping with handmade design and craft and giving opportunities to many - fingers crossed I reach my goal and am able make my designs sellable. I appreciate anything you can do for me. Many thanks, Alison R.J. Smith. Doodles by award-winning actress Emma Thompson, Dudley’s own Lenny Henry and music legends Frankie Valli and Tony Hadley are being immortalised in glass – thanks to Stourbridge glass artists. The doodles will go on show as part of the International Glass Festival which is hosted in Stourbridge from May 28-31. The doodle challenge, organised by the British Glass Foundation, will see the finished works auctioned to raise funds for the British Glass Foundation trust during the festival. Each of the celebrities created an original drawing on an acrylic sheet, which will then be translated into a piece of glass art, the method and style depending on the interpretation of the glass artist working on the project. The first piece of original glass has already been made. Glass Artist Allister Malcolm who is based at Broadfield House Glass Museum worked with fellow artist Richard Golding on a doodle created by Frankie Valli. The doodle of three brightly coloured kites was encased in clear glass, which was then embellished with molten glass on the surface, setting the three simple kites against a blue sky and lush green fields. A video of the piece being made is available on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9JCMvlbG0Y&feature=youtu.be The majority of the other pieces will be made or finishing touches added during the festival itself, with the public welcome to watch the artists at work. These will be glass engraver Terri Colledge working on a piece by Tony Hadley on 28, 29, 30 and 31 May at the Ruskin Glass Centre. All other pieces will be completed at Broadfield House Glass Museum. These include works by drill engraver Nancy Sutcliffe working on a piece by Raymond Blanc on 28 May; Tim Boswell and Elliott Walker working on a doodle by Maggie Philbin, and artist Lynne Baker creating a piece based on a drawing by actress Emma Thompson, both on Friday 29 May; Steve Piper who will be copper wheel engraving a design by Lenny Henry on Saturday 30 May and finally artists Vic Bamforth and Darren Weed will be collaborating on a design by Dave Hill of Slade on Sunday 31 May.

And among the doodles will be winning designs from Dudley school students who also took part in a recent doodle challenge with three categories, ages 7 and under, 11 and under, 13 and under. These will be translated into glass in advance of the festival, with the finishing touches being added at a public art session on Wednesday 28 May, where the the winners will receive their awards of a £25.00 gift voucher, certificate and engraved paperweight which will be presented by the Master of the Worshipful Company Of Glass Sellers, London, Gwen Rhys at Broadfield House Glass Museum. The fund-raising art works will feature in a packed programme of events, exhibitions and entertainment during the festival. Exhibitions include an amazing wall of 150 glass postcards, breathtaking cutting-edge pieces from renowned international glass artists, striking pieces of glass on loan from Hungary and spectacular glass light and sound installations. Visitors from around the world are expected to descend on venues across the historic Stourbridge Glass Quarter for the festival which also includes the 2015 British Glass Biennale exhibition. Allister Malcolm, glass artist, member of the British Glass Foundation and coordinator of the doodle project said: "I'm so pleased that we've had such an enthusiastic response starting with some great doodles. Suppliers from the glass world have sponsored the project and now many glass artists are giving their time. It's amazing to see so much support to help protect our glass heritage" Elisabeth Johnson, festival coordinator said: “The Glass Doodles project, organized by the British Glass Foundation is just another example of how the studio glass industry is thriving in this country and shows the level of support locally for celebrations of our glass heritage. “The International Festival of Glass takes the celebration of this versatile material to a whole new level, with exhibitions such as the British Glass Biennale showing just how popular glass as a material and as an art form continues to be.” The festival also hosts the British Glass Biennale which runs from May 28 – June 28 and features work from 77 artists who have been selected for this prestigious award. Artists are drawn from across the globe, including Costa Rica, South Korea, Israel, Sweden, Germany and Japan as well as glass artists living and working in the historic Stourbridge Glass Quarter. For more information about the workshops and all the events, activities and exhibitions taking place throughout the festival visit Website: www.ifg.org.uk Notes to editors: The British Glass Foundation seeks to represent all other charities, organisations and individuals that have an interest in preserving glass heritage.
