Edenvale High School offers the General Pathway to obtain a Grade 12 certificate.

FEATURES OF THE NEW SYSTEM:

1. 7 subjects must be taken, 4 of which are compulsory and 3 are selected.2. All subjects are offered on the General CAPS Grade 3. No specific groupings of subjects are required as in the past.4. The minimum statutory requirement to obtain university entrance is a National Senior

Certificate (NSC) certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) in at least four

Page 4: EDENVALE HIGH SCHOOL - Weeblystudymethods.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/1/24016989/grade_9_sub…  · Web viewEdenvale High School offers the General Pathway to obtain a Grade 12 certificate

recognized 20-credit subjects from the designated subject list (as gazetted by the Ministry of Education in August 2005.)

Please note that Life Orientation is a ten-credit subject.

To be able to gain access to a faculty and specific programmes, prospective students are required to have the appropriate combinations of recognised NSC subjects as well as certain levels of achievement in these subjects. In this regard, the determination of an Admission Point Score (APS) is explained and a summary of the faculty specific requirements i.e. the APS per programme and specific subjects required per programme are provided. Take note that there may be additional subject requirements under “Regulations” in the rules and syllabuses of each faculty. Take further note that the achievement of the minimum requirements does not guarantee a learner admission to any programme or field of study.

Determine the Admission Point Score (APS. Old M-Score)The calculation is simple and based on a candidate’s achievement in six recognized 20-credit subjects using the NSC ratings on a 1 to 7 scale of achievement. The highest APS that can be achieved is 42.

Life Orientation is excluded from the calculation determining the APS required for admission per faculty, but the University requires that this subject be passed at a rate higher than 4 (50%) to obtain an NSC. Some faculties may require a higher pass mark for Life Orientation, for example, the faculty of Health Sciences requires an achievement level of 5.

English

It is surely self-evident that a language such as English should form the foundation upon which the whole structure of our learners’ education should be based. Language is the tool of communication from the cradle to the grave. Inability to express oneself articulately and convincingly may hinder one academically and may impede one’s interaction with people in all walks of life: church, school, business, and in social and sporting activities.

Learners need to extend their vocabulary, their use of idiom, of figurative language – and can do so only by contact with a wide range of texts: newspapers, magazines, books, plays, films and television programmes. Here parents and teachers can be a guide and example: the one in developing the use of the child’s mother/other tongue, the other in refining and extending the use of it.

English is used by millions of people all over the world. It is the language of higher learning, of sport, politics and business, religion, international travel – and seems set to dominate the world scene for years to come. Those lucky enough to speak it as a mother tongue need to cherish and protect their

language by speaking it accurately; those to whom it is a second language need to hone their skills in using what must be their passport to the world.

Little remains to be said about the need to learn English. Give your children the best weapon you could possibly equip them with: give them the power of the word.

Afrikaans

Afrikaans is a modern African language and there are more Afrikaans mother-tongue speakers in this country than there are English mother-tongue speakers. More than 15 million South Africans can communicate in Afrikaans.

Language is about communication, and linguistic skills are important and useful in all walks of life: broadcasting, business, journalism, law, Human Resource management, public relations, research, and translation – to mention only a few.

Furthermore, because Afrikaans derives from Dutch, the whole gamut of Germanic languages and the culture of Europe becomes more accessible to students of Afrikaans. Remember Afrikaans is probably one of the easiest languages to master – so success is well within everyone’s grasp.

Life Orientation

The aim of this important subject is to prepare our learners for the workplace and equip them with all the skills needed to lead a functional and productive life.NOTE: Should a learner fail to meet the passing requirements in LO, he/she will fail.

Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy

A. MathematicsToo often Mathematics is chosen for the wrong reasons or parents insist on Maths because “there is no life without Math’s”.

There is no doubt Maths is important; in fact it is vital in the fields of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Economic Science.

However, a pass in any other subject is better than a fail in Maths on a Matric certificate.Success in Math’s requires:

A SOLID foundation A genuine commitment to HOURS of hard work and practice, practice, practice. An ability to think logically and abstractly. If all three of the above describe you, we’d love you to do Maths.

6

Page 7: EDENVALE HIGH SCHOOL - Weeblystudymethods.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/1/24016989/grade_9_sub…  · Web viewEdenvale High School offers the General Pathway to obtain a Grade 12 certificate

Learners wanting to take Mathematics will have to write an entrance examination (was held in June) and attain a pass mark of 60%.

B. Mathematical Literacy

Mathematical Literacy is designed to equip learners with mathematical life skills especially in terms of dealing with personal finance. It is NOT a “watered down” offering of academic Maths, but rather a completely different syllabus. We are very excited to be offering this very relevant subject.

History

Trains critical reading and thinking skills and orderly presentation of information. Develops powers of analysis, evaluation and judgment. Develops better understanding of the present, including democratic traditions, racism, and

self-determination. Teaches a high regard for values of truth and justice. Promotes tolerance among people of a diverse society. Provides security of identity and heritage through knowledge of traditions, anniversaries and

commemorations. Is an asset in developing young minds for careers in Law, Politics and International

relations.

Geography

Geography is the study of man and his environment, which gives the subject a very broad base indeed. Because of this wide range, Geography occupies an enviable position in both the Humanities and Science fields.

Modern technology has been very kind to Geography. Space travel, satellite photography, seismic research etc – all these developments, and more, have added immeasurably to our knowledge of our greater world.Aspects covered in the 3-year course in Grade 10, 11 and 12 are:

I. Geomorphology – the scientific study of the earth’s crust (and all disasters such as volcanic eruptions.)

II. Climatology – weather and climate affect everything we do, wear and eat. Is South Africa the Lightning Centre of the world?

III. Economic Geography – the earth’s economic resources and their development. Will South Africa run out of gold?

7

Page 8: EDENVALE HIGH SCHOOL - Weeblystudymethods.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/1/24016989/grade_9_sub…  · Web viewEdenvale High School offers the General Pathway to obtain a Grade 12 certificate

IV. Urban and Rural Settlements – where, why and how we live. Can South Africa cope with the large influx of rural people to the cities?

V. Regional Geography – the comparative study of selected regions. South Africa really is “the world in one country”!

VI. Map Work – love it or hate it – but you’ll never get lost again!

Note: We strive to have international tours every 2 or so years.

Opportunities for Geographers:Aside from the obvious advantages of the wide spectrum of practical knowledge, Geography graduates can find employment in diverse fields:

Nature conservation CSIR – air pollution research Land and property development Town planning Weather forecasting Teaching, lecturing.

Further study of the above is at University level, for which Matric with endorsement is required.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts for Grade 10 – 12 allow the learner to express personal creativity whilst learning practical techniques in drawing, painting and print making.

Visual Culture Studies, the theory component, traces the history of art from ancient civilizations to contemporary art making. Learners are trained to look critically, to question the meaning and relevance of visual images, and to understand the power of the image in today’s visual environment.

Learners are required to produce a minimum of four artworks a year.. Learners must commit to the extra hours after school and at home, as great artwork requires patience, persistence and hours of HARD WORK! Learners are expected to adhere strictly to work schedules and deadlines whilst producing work of a very high standard. Commitment, dedication and a striving for perfection are recommended attributes.

For those wishing to take Art in Grade 10, there is a compulsory examination in Term 2 of Grade 9 to assess ability and inclination.

Teach/lecture at university, technical university, technical college or high school.

Note to the Parents

If your child chooses this learning area, a centre fee of about R 300 is to be paid at the start of each year. This money is used to cover the cost of the ingredients that are used during the practical lessons. Each learner is required to purchase a recipe book which is used until the end of Grade 12. In Grade 10, the learners need to purchase an apron kit and in Grade 11, the learners need to purchase a teddy bear kit.

Engineering Graphics and Design

This learning area is not to be confused with Graphic Design, Interior Design and Commercial Art. It is an Engineering and Civil field of study.

This learning content develops multiple skills simultaneously. Here observation, listening skills, reading skills, insight and imagination, eye-hand co-ordination, fine motor control, repetitive procedures (self-discipline), Computer Aided Drawing or CAD (2D), research skills to encourage the inquiring mind, application of the Design Process, problem solving, correct, accurate and neat working habits along with subject content are taught.

The learners will graduate from this course with basic skills drawn from a wide spectrum in this particular field. This opens many doors for them in the future with a wide field of study opportunities including:

Draughtsman • Architecture

10

Page 11: EDENVALE HIGH SCHOOL - Weeblystudymethods.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/1/24016989/grade_9_sub…  · Web viewEdenvale High School offers the General Pathway to obtain a Grade 12 certificate

Engineering (all fields) • CAD Drawing Production Management • Town Planning Surveying / Estimator / Buyer • Dental Mechanics Management and Planning

EGD is closely related to and overlaps with many other subjects. These include: Mathematics • Science All technical subjects • Civil subjects Geography • Technology Consumer Studies • Art

This learning area does not restrict the learner to a trade or technical field. It is University Exempt and earns points for entrance purposes. (Core Math’s is required for Engineering at University) Learners not wishing to follow any of the fields mentioned will have the ability to interpret drawings. EGD is a very useful life skill to have.

We demand a very high standard of work from our learners and they deliver quality work.

COST: Drawing instruments should last for three years if the learners look after them. The best quality instruments are ordered through the educators, who get them at less than cost price. R800.00 is the limit per learner in grade 10. We teach from workbooks and textbooks. These contain abundant class exercises, enrichment work, and all portfolio tasks for the year as well as past exam questions. They cost around R200.00 each. We also have a CAD centre to maintain, so a levy of R200.00 per learner per year is required by the end March. Learners enjoy this subject but soon learn that it is a “learning” subject and that effort is required to succeed

Computer Application Technology (CAT)

This subject offers the pupils both the theory and the practical opportunity to manage and master all the applications in the Microsoft Ms Office package, e.g. Ms Word, Ms Excel, Ms Access, Ms PowerPoint etc.

The pupil will develop the skill to discuss and present the different topics of the computer e.g. hardware, software, e-communications, new trends, social implications of the computer etc.

The exciting thing that CAT skills offer the pupils is that they can be very creative whilst learning all these new skills. The pupil will be equipped to manage all the documents required in the business world. The pupils will be able to take part in the Computer Olympiad and enter competitions outside of schoolA levy of about R 300 per year is required in order to pay for the cartridges used and for maintenance. The pupils who want to take CAT will only be considered if the Math mark is greater than 45%.

11

Page 12: EDENVALE HIGH SCHOOL - Weeblystudymethods.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/0/1/24016989/grade_9_sub…  · Web viewEdenvale High School offers the General Pathway to obtain a Grade 12 certificate

Information Technology (I.T)

This subject enables the pupils to problem-solve, discuss, present and provide solutions in a typed document using Ms Word and a programming language.

The focus of IT is to provide the pupils with the practical and theoretical skills in Delphi Programming, Ms Word, Ms Access, hardware components of the computer system software, networking, social implications of the computer, new trends and e-communications.

The pupils will be able to take part in the Computer Olympiad and enter competitions outside of school. The exciting thing is that, by the time the pupils pass Grade 12, they will have completed a percentage of the syllabus content of their first year of a tertiary Computer Science course. A levy of about R 300 per year is required in order to pay for the cartridges used and for maintenance. The pupils who want to take I.T will only be considered if the Math mark is greater than 45%.

Physical Science

Science is largely responsible for the way in which we live. A world without science is a world without medicine, electricity, television, computers, cell phones, ipads, etc.

The subject covers the study areas: Physics, Chemistry and Material Science. These areas provide a foundation for scientific and technological progress which is vital for our modern society, especially here in South Africa where these skills are lacking.

Physics is concerned with investigating the behaviour of matter and energy. Chemistry is the science of elements and their combinations, and their behaviour under varying conditions. Material Science combines the physical and chemical properties of materials. In the new syllabus the focus is on Organic Chemistry – the basics for all new textiles, fuels and medicine, chemical systems and chemical changes- in other words the science of the future.

Physical Science provides a challenge for the bright students. It requires good use of language as well as analytical, practical, observational and mathematical skills. A

prerequisite for Science is Core Maths. Together with Core Maths, it allows pupils access to most career choices. These could include Pharmacy, Medicine, Architecture, Biochemistry, Engineering and more.

Life Science

Do you love learning about the human body and diseases? Does the origin of life and mass extinction interest you? Are you concerned about the environment? Are you fascinated by DNA and inheritance? Do careers in Medicine, Zoology, Botany, Nature Conservation, Veterinary Science, Sports

Psychology, Nutrition, Marine Biology, Generic Engineering, Biotechnology and Forensic Science excite you?

Then Life Science is possibly a good choice. But remember – it is hard work, you must be able to study an enormous amount of theory and be able to memorize long biological terms as well as interpret the concepts you have learnt.

The Matric exams are difficult, aimed at potential medical students and the study of Life Science does include some Maths and Science work. Pupils who also take Maths and Science do well in Life Science. So if you feel you can cope with the above, we welcome you to our department, where we are fully equipped for you to do hands-on practical work to reinforce all theory being studied.

AccountingAccounting is “the Language of Business”. It is a vital step towards future success in any business venture. Financial Accounting embodies the knowledge, understanding and application of financial information through to the Financial Statements.

Managerial Accounting introduces the learners to the understanding and application of costs in the manufacturing environment and budgets.

Analytical thought is encouraged in the interpretation and analysis of financial and managerial information. The application and understanding of managerial control tools and strategies in order to manage the

resources of the business are also included. Computerised accounting is introduced in the QuickBooks programme which is included as an extra-mural. The course will help school leavers moving directly into the work place, as well as those entering colleges and universities, to obtain higher and professional qualifications.

Business StudiesBusiness Studies concentrates on those elements/factors which have to do with the successful creation and running of a business. It covers a variety of functions such as production, financial management, marketing, human resources and the business environment. The learner gets to understand how to run a business from capital formation and decide on the
