National Standards Update

We have been informed (via public announcement) of a government decision to mandate further controls

on schools in 2013 to ensure compliance with National Standards and to speed the creation of league tables and performance pay.

The Minister of Education this morning announced that the National Administrative Guidelines (NAGs) will be amended to:

1. Require schools to use a standard reporting template for student achievement data from 2013. The data must be electronically uploaded

via school Student Management System (SMS). This information will now include all ESOL and

students with high/moderate special needs i.e. ORS.

2. Report student achievement information and lodge your charters by 1 March each year from

2013. In 2012 this was 1 February.

3. Require schools to report data by YEAR level, as.well as school level (by the numbers and proportions of students at, above, below and well below, and by gender, Pasifika, Maori) from 2013. This year, we reported as required, by school level. Our year-level data is on our website.

4. Enable the Ministry to set targets (not the school) at a national, regional and by territorial local

authority level for National Standards achievement from 2013. Currently, we set targets that are additional to National Standards requirements so we are analysing two separate data streams. We will need to continue to do this

in order to report accurate instructional data to students and families.

5. Require all teachers to use an electronic moderation tool, the Progress and Achievement Consistency Tool (PACT), by 2014. We have no information about this tool as yet and were

unaware that it was being developed although we suspected something like this might be

designed. It would appear that this tool will make decisions about student achievement rather than teachers and school tests/overall teacher judgements/moderation that we currently have in place.

6. Develop a public website to compare schools from 2013.

Late yesterday we were also asked, via email, to pro-actively distribute a pamphlet to parents which

would give information about these changes. The pam-phlet was supposed to be attached to the email but in

fact was not. Today we received a further email recom-mending that families look at the pamphlet via the minis-try website. Here is the link should you wish to do so. PLEASE NOTE: There is no information on the ‗Educators‘ portal on MOE‘s website, it is located on the parent portal

Community Survey Summary

A summary was published on our website earlier in the week under the heading Information - Our Surveys.

I have also reframed the survey into four parts and

uploaded links on Our Surveys page so that further families may complete it should they wish to do so up until 31 October

1. Three-way Conferences and Reporting 2. Guiding Prin-

ciples 3. Short Surveys 1 and 2

We do hope that more families will complete these.

Student Survey

I am part-way through a survey with sixty randomly selected students in Years Four - Six about their learning and participation at Edendale. Our students have given very thoughtful responses and useful feedback. I hope to complete the survey next week.

Repair of Buildings

We have been given the ‘go-ahead‘ to undertake repairs to Room 16. Planning for this will begin shortly.

The Ministry of Education has decided that our school hall, (renovated in 2004) is at risk of becoming a leaky building after looking at reports undertaken by Prendos a few years ago. They plan to begin repairs in 2013.

Litter Prevention 2012 In Term 2 Tarai Team participated in a litter prevention programme organised by Auckland Council and Kids 4 Drama. Students had to create a jingle (to encourage litter

reduction) which included the phrase ‗Come on! - Be a tidy Kiwi‖. At assembly in Week 5, Yr3 students presented their litter jingles and a group of Yr5 and 6 students also took part in a ‗Litter Game Show‘. Yr3 students later created items to perform at a whole school assembly with representatives from Auckland Council in attendance; Kids

4 Drama representatives were also there to judge the

presentations. Well done to all who participated and to Rm7 students (Barisha, Bella, Harry, Jessie, Paige, Pipiana and William) who were the Edendale winners. Thank you to Auckland Council and Kids 4 Drama for designing the promotion.

Garden to Table Winter harvest Our crops may have slowed down for winter, but Garden to Table has had a bumper harvest of donations. Thanks to Bronwyn Ward for her posters and CDs and to Grace‘s mum, Caroline, who also donated CDs. No, we are not playing music to the plants or doing the Charleston while we chop, classes have suspended them over their crops to scare the birds away. Pea plants donated by Issie and Georgia will now be protected, as the birds love to eat baby pea plants. Issie and Georgia also donated spinach and lettuce seedlings that classes will plant out soon. Future harvests will be whizzed into fancy creations with a food processor donated by Natalie Hick. Thanks also to Callum for the pumpkin seeds and Sally Goode for the large plates. Garden to Table representatives were at Edendale recently to receive a $25,000 cheque from money raised from the round the Bays run. Sarah and Jodie completed the run too. The donation will contribute to Garden to Table schools across the country. Photos and more details are on Rosemary‘s blog... In the Classes It‘s cold and rainy and we‘ve had a lot of frosts, but we‘re pleased to see our brussel sprouts are slowly starting to form. Yes, the classes have been so great at trying new and exciting foods that we‘re sure they will be happy to try brussel sprouts. In Garden to Table classes this fortnight we‘ve been studying fungi and asking if it‘s a friend or a foe? Kitchen classes have been on hold until Sarah‘s return. You can be sure she‘s planning some great recipes for when she is back. Volunteer Vacancy Our great bunch of volunteers are working hard, but we still have two spots to fill Wednesday gardening classes and Thursday kitchen classes (choose either 12:00–12:50pm or 1:00–1:50pm, or both if you have the time). Please email [email protected] if interested. Jodie, Sarah and Kim

‘If boys ruled the world’ Argument by Manaaki Team students

―Go polish my medals and that's an order‖ I think if boys ruled the world then it would be fun bossing around girls ―ahh‖ because you would never have to get up ―wa ha ha ha‖ and they cant do anything its brilliantly evil. If boys ruled the world then you can have

anything you'd like including toys. You could have Lego, Mobilo, Joblo, Xbox 360 and don't forget video games and many, many more. You could also get gum and lollypops and candy to eat. If boys ruled the world then they can

break rules and law and can do whatever

they want like steel stuff and drive past the speed limits and spray ‗spray paint‘ on walls. Do you want girls to rule the world instead? Then let boys rule the world! Rowan Rm1

‘Should the playground in school stay or go?’ Argument by Manaaki Team students

Rosemary has decided that she might take all of the playgrounds away. Well I don‘t want her to. These are my reasons why the playgrounds shall stay! Mmm, firstly were you ever so lonely and you had know one to play with? You should have gone straight to the playground and played there because you‘re lonely and there is plenty of fun stuff like rope climbing. Secondly there is not much equipment to play with so you can go on the playground and play. My third reason is that playgrounds can make you face your fears. If you are scared of heights and you go on the playground you faced your fears. Our playgrounds have walls to climb on so they you won‘t be afraid of heights. My fourth reason is you are not allowed to go in the P.E shed so you can‘t play with the balls in the P.E shed. Next you can have fun because you can climb and swing. Rosemary what part of that would you not call fun? Lastly it makes you learn how to hang on stuff and climb so if you go to a friend‘s party and at the party there is a rock climbing wall you could climb on it because you learnt how to climb on the school playground. So now you know how to climb. Rosemary after reading my argument what do you think? Remember this is not just for me this is for the children at Edendale Primary School. So what is your decision? Juan – Rm3
