Classy houses mushroom in rural areas NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]

WHEN driving or walking aroundareas such as Snathing, Sweet-waters, Mpumuza and Eland-

skop, the eyes are caught by classy homesand onewould swear it’s a drive or awalkaround the Montrose or Hilton area.

Could it be that people are finding theruralareasasplacesofcomfortandpeace, compared to the town environment andsuburban areas?

Dumezweni Zimu from Snathing andPatrick Mbambo from Elandskop gavesome perspective on the issue.

Zimu’s house is just along Snathingmain road and it is a head–turner.

Some of Zimu’s personal reasons forbuildinghis owncastle inSnathingare in-vestment, house value, comfort, peaceand development, as he also looks atthings with the eye of a businessman.

“At my age, I take so many things intoperspective when making a decision.Buildingahouse isan investmentandthatshouldbeaccompaniedbythevalueofthathouse.

“I would start by saying that buildingahouse isabetter initiative thanbuying it.With the house you have built, you decidewhat to do. You decide what to add, whatsort of paint or ceiling board youwant. Astheowner, youare thedecisionmakerand

therefore you decide on everything,” saidZimu.

He said that the value of the houses intown are completely different from theones in the rural areas.

“AR1.5millionhousebuilt inSnathingcompared to theonebuilt in townareverydifferent. I have a huge site which couldstill accommodate another ten houses,”said Zimu.

As a business driven person, he said, hewould like to seepeoplenotbeingboth-ered by having to take a taxi to town forshopping.

“Businessplansarealreadyinthepipe-line and thatwouldhelp to create employ-ment opportunities. I believe that weshould develop our own areas now, in-stead of shopping in town,” he said.

For Mbambo, his roots are in Eland-skopandit’swherehewouldliketobebur-ied.

“I grewup inElandskopand it’swheremy comfort is. I am free to domy ceremo-nies without having anyone complainingabout the slaughtering of a cow or goat,”he said.

One other reason many people areflocking back to rural areas to build bighouses, is thatdevelopmentsnowaboundin these areas.

Before 1994, there were no tarredroads, no water and no electricity.

THE Role of the ANCYL in the Cur-rent Phase of the Struggle

AS a way concluding, the ANC 53rd Conference observed “with deep concern[that] the state of the Youth Leagueand its increasingly antagonistic relationship with its mother–body, seemingly defining itself outside of the political framework of the ANC”.It also noted the state of the NEC withkey acting positions, and the emergingtendency in the League at different levels to recall and suspend members

without due process. Thus it resolved that “the incoming

NEC (National Executive Committee)should urgently intervene to addressthe situation of the ANC Youth League. The incoming NEC must, among other

things, take all necessary measures toensure that the League plays its properrole and acts within the policy and theconstitution. The revival of the ANCYL is very important, since it would mutually reinforcethe renewal of the ANC itself and wouldalso mobilise the scores of young peo

ple, most of whom will be voting for thefirst time in 2014.The task teams must be under no illu

sion that the majority of the prospective‘first–time–youth’votersare‘coconuts’, who either reside in urban areasor come from well–to–do families sincethe 2011 Census report – cited above –debunks the myth that central to therevival of the ANCYL there must be anattempt to Americanise the ANCYL.The reality is that the ANCYL’s revival

program must appeal to the significantmajority of youth under 35 years of agewho live in households that receivelow–incomes, as already alluded to inthe preceding paragraphs. The ANCYL must continue to push radical youth demands, which are in anyway those of the society. The YouthLeague must be nothing else but theparliament of the young people. We must see the society we seek tobuild within us. We need unity in actionfor a better and prospering society forall the youth of our country; Black, Indian, Coloured and White. The future of our country belongs to allthe youth who live in it, irrespective oftheir colour. This unity will never be built through

fracturing or dividing young people onthebasisofwhotheyareandwhattheircolour is. Youth formations, especiallywithin the national progressive fold, have the responsibility of championingthe historical mandate of the ANC andthe Alliance, that of transforming oursociety into a non–racial, non–sexistand democratic society. We hold, as the ANCYL, the responsibility of ensuring that the young peopleare liberated from economic and political bondage, especially those who were

historically oppressed.Lastly, central to the restoration of theANCYL is to give practical meaning tothe Decade of the Cadre by deliberatelyensuring that the ANC values of selflessness; selfrespect; respect for theelders; revolutionary discipline; constructive criticism; selfcriticism arepopularised among the youth. These values are more important if weare to produce young people who arenot suffering from the “mefirst–everyone–else–after” mentality. In otherwords, the revival of the ANCYL is notabout being relevant to a minority of‘coconuts’, but it is about moving beyond resuscitating Congress resolutions. The ANCYL’s revival programmust also be about reminding theyouth that their duty is to learn, learnand learn as instructed by Lenin. This learning must be coupled with ideological clarity in terms of the youth’srole towards achieving the NationalDemocratic Society through the National Democratic Revolution. The entitlement mentality must also

be busted asunder and be replacedwith aspirit of being apeople’sservantswith no interest except to recognisethat the real reason for the existenceof the ANC and its leagues is to serveour people
