A drive to succeed>> Inspired by his business management lecturer to be his own boss,KwaMachibisa events coordinator Sizwe Gwala is hoping to makestrides in the industry, having recently planned King Goodwill ZwelithiniZulu’s wedding. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to him.BORN 34yearsago, Gwala left his fulltime job as a credit controller at the Witness to focus his energies on his eventsmanagement business, Xolisisizwe Trading and Projects, which he founded with hiswife Xolisa.

He started by providing consultancy toemerging business owners, compiling business profiles and alsoassistingpeoplewithfiling their tax returns.

Seeing that this was not working forhim, he ventured into events management

which was something that he was hired foron a part time basis while still employed.

His company specializes in events management, catering services and providingcleaning services to various governmentaldepartments.

Gwala attributes his growing success tothe Msunduzi Municipality, for empowering young entrepreneurs by providing themwith opportunities.

“Quitting a full time job where there issecurity was a huge risk for me. I realised

that I had more to offer to the world thanwhat the environment was allowing me.While still at the Witness, I met variouspeople and learnt the basics of managinga business. I decided to quit and focus myenergies on my business.”

Apart from owning an events company,Gwala also coowns an african cuisinerestaurant with his wife in Theatre Lane inthe CBD.

“We did not want to wait for the government to give us employment, we want

ed to start something that wouldsustain us. Government tenderscome and go, and even if we arenot hired for any functions, wemust have something to fall backon,”hesaid. Gwalawasthengiventhe opportunity to plan the royalwedding

“I felt honoured that someonefrom a place that is looked down uponlike Machibisa would be part of history. As a proud Zulu man, it was also an honourfor me to be next to the King. When I wentthere, I not only represented myself, butthe area where I come as well as Pietermaritzburg. I am grateful to have been part ofthis history as this was broadcast aroundthe world. I would not have made it if it wasnot for the assistance of service providersthat I work with, such as Big Beat productions and Mavukana trading.”

Gwala said that his success is a challenge to other young people from underprivileged areas that one’s background

does not determine your future. Sincestarting his business, he has employedmore than 50 people. While he hosts soccer tournaments to encourage communityparticipation and to boost football development around his area, his long term goalis to establish his own bursary fund.

“If you have the drive and determination, you can be wherever you want to be,”he ended.

Taxi owners march against bus routeNQOBILE MTOLO>>[email protected]

SCORES of irate Pietermaritzburg taxi ownersrecently marched from Imbali to the City Hall todemandanswersonhowtheywillbenefit fromthe

Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN)bus project.

The project was launched in Msunduzi in 2012.Thegroupofmore than50taxiownerssaid that they

only discovered through newspaper articles that plansto enrol this bus project in PMB were on the horizon.

Last week Friday, parts of Chief Albert Luthuli Roadwere closed off due to the march. The group of taxiowners, led byNjabuloNkomo, arrived outside the cityhall looking to meet with Municipal Manager MxolisiNkosi.

Some taxi owners shouted, “We would rather diethan see the bus project being implemented. The bussystem will not see the light of day. The municipalityshould f#$%off. It isbetter todie than togo through thisabuse.”

NkomosaidthattheIRPTNprojectwoulddestroythetaxi industry. He said that the bus project will cause ashortageof passengers for the taxi industry and thus fi-nancially cripple it.

“We were not told that there would be a bus systemoperating in Pietermaritzburg. We have 4000 taxidriversand4000slidingdoortaxiconductors.Whatwillhappen to these 8000people?Themunicipality shouldstate in black and white how we will benefit from thisproject and that our operationswill not be affected.WecannotbeledbytheSouthNationalTaxiCouncil (Santa-co) people who are paid by the government. The buseswill take away our only bread andbutter,” saidNkomo.

Nkomo said that the march was not organized bySantaco, nor the local taxi alliance. He said that afterwaiting outside the city hall for 30 minutes, five taxiowners were asked to meet with Nkosi inside.

After 20 minutes, the men were ushered back out-side.

Themenweremandated to come back with a list oftheir grievances by this past Monday.

“Ukuhlukumeza-na kwabo bona ku-vamise ukuthi kubeukuhlukumezanangamazwi.

“Ukugqokakahle, ubuhle noku-ba mkhulu ngomz-imbakuyenzaaban-ye abafundi baman-tombazane bagcinebehlukumeza, abanye ngoba bonabezibona behlukilekunabo,” kusho uLeRoux.

History of the IRPTNIn 2012, the Msunduzi Municipalitylaunched the R3 billion IRPTN project toimprove the Pietermaritzburg transportsystem.

This public transport project is set toalleviate traffic congestion in the city, reduce the carbon copy and create jobs.

PMB is one of 12 cities in the countryidentifiedbythe Department ofTransportto implement the IRPTN. This bus systemwill boast controlled timetables and everyaspect will be monitored to ensure convenience for passengers.

At the launch of the project, MsunduziMayor Chris Ndlela said that the ticketingsystem would be designed in such a waythat there will be integrated fares whichcan be used for different modes of transport.

At the launch, Ndlela said, “The stateoftheart stops and interchanges will bedesigned to make it easier to move fromone part of the city to the next”

Freedom Square Park has beenearmarked as the IRPTN control centreand this will cost R215million toconstruct. This centre’s main function willbe to control and manage the routes andmovements of buses for timeous departure and arrival times at various destinations.

Nkosi recently told the ExecutiveCommittee (Exco) that the municipalitywill go on tender for the construction ofthe transport hub, once they have securedfunds.

Last year October, the uMgungundlovu Regional Taxi Council steering committee and the Msunduzi Municipality signeda memorandum of agreement at the CityHall. Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela saidthat he was thankfulthat this memorandum of agreementwould close a hugecommunication gapwhich has existed foryears between thetaxi council and themunicipality. At thecentre of this agreement was the IRPTNproject and he commented that therewould be ongoingconsultations between the taxi industry and the municipality.

disadvantages of starting treatment earlier.“People must be made aware that the evi-

Combattingsocial illsthrough chess>> While substance and drug abuse is rife among theyouth, young people from Edendale have started a chessclub at the Georgetown library in order to keep themselvesbusy. NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to them. The clubknown as “Chesa chess club” was founded by SpheleleMyakayaka and Lindokuhle Mtaka in April this year, in abid to prevent young people from engaging in social ills.

Currently, about 30 young people fromdifferent schools and tertiaryinstitutions are being taught about the

game, and they meet every Monday toSaturday from 2pm to 4.30pm.

Mtaka said that although both of them areself taught, they gainmost of their knowledgefromreadingbooksabout thegame.Theyalsodraw their inspiration from watchinginternational chess tournaments.

“Nowadays there are so many social illsthat youngpeopleare involved in, andwesawthis as a good initiative to find something thatwould occupy their minds in the afternoons.Whileitkeepsthembusy, italsoenhancestheirthinking capabilities.

“Chess is a game that requires one to usethe brain to its full capacity. It is aboutmakinggooddecisions, andoneof themost importantrules of the game is not to stand still, which isalso one of life’s realities. Surprisingly, werecently discovered that countries such as

Russia are using the game as a professionwhere after so many tournaments, onebecomes a qualified chess master. Someschoolsareevenusing it aspartof thecurricu-lum. We believe that our South Africanchildren are also capable of reaching thatlevel,” said Mtaka.

One student, Nkosikhona Zuma, said thatsincehestartedplaying, hisschoolmarkshaveimproved.

“I have seen some great improvements inmy studies, particularly in mathematics. While it is a hobby, it also plays a huge role insharpening one’s mind.”

Myakayaka said that while they have had10 chess sets donated to them by SunitaRichards from the Georgetown Library, theyare in need of more sponsors in order toparticipate in localandnational tournaments.

The next tournament will take place nextmonth at Project Gateway. Formore informa-tion, contact Myakayaka at 079 851 3821.

ECHOBreast milk isthe best milk

NICOLE JOHN>>[email protected]

IN an effort to reduce the child mortalityrate, the provincial Department ofHealth has launched the KwaZuluNatalInitiative for Breastfeeding Support(KIBS), together with the University ofKwaZuluNatal and the Elma Foundation.

Launched during internationalBreastfeeding Awareness Week, KIBSaims to improve exclusive breastfeedingrates in the province by not only teachingwomen about its importance, but alsoencouraging them to donate their breastmilk to be used to help other children.

According to Victoria Mubaiwa, thedepartment’s manager for maternalcare and women, as many as 500 babieswill be saved annually if mothers acrossthe province respond to the call tobreastfeed their babies for as long aspossible.

KIBS will increase access to humanmilk for sick and small neonates in KZNby 2017. The project also seeks to changethe mindset of breastfeeding, increaseits social acceptability and create awareness about human milk banking withinKZN communities. Milk banks will beopened across the province in varioushospitals. There are currently five banksalready opened.

Speaking at the recent launch wasAnna Coutsoudis from the departmentof paediatrics at UKZN, who said that themore mothers that take to breastfeeding, the more donors there will be.

“Most people have never heard ofdonating breast milk, creating awareness is the only way we will change mindsand lead people away from baby formula,” she said.

Sister Shanila Moodley, manager ofthe maternity unit at Netcare St Anne’shospital said that the benefits of breastfeeding should always be explained andthe practice encouraged for mothers.

“Unlike milk formula, breast milkcontains nutrients and vitamins that are

important for the healthy mental andphysical development of your baby,” saidMoodley.

Breast milk also contains antibodiesthat help protect against dangerousillnesses, including the two mostcommon causes of infant mortalityworldwide diarrhoea and pneumonia.

Moodley added that breast milk is farsuperior to milk formula, no matter hownatural or high quality the formula maybe. Breastfeeding also has longtermhealth benefits for the baby.

Infants who are breastfed often havelower blood pressure and cholesterol andreduced rates of obesity and type twodiabetes. In addition, breastfeeding mayhelp reduce the risk of the mother developing breast and ovarian cancer in laterlife.

“We encourage mothers to breastfeed exclusively for six months followingthe birth of their baby before introducingother sources of nutrition. It is importantto begin within the first hour of birth ifpossible, because this is when the mother’s body produces colostrum, a thickcreamy liquid that is high in nutrients andis easily digestible for babies. Colostrumencourages the cleansing of the baby’sintestines, which helps prevent jaundice,” she said.

Moodley emphasized that HIVpositive mothers who are breastfeeding donot give their children any other liquidsor foods, as exclusive breastfeeding forup to six months can lead to a significantly reduced risk of mothertochild transmission of the virus.

She added that the Netcare Foundation has supported the South AfricanBreast milk Reserve (SABR) by collectingbreast milk from donor mothers for distribution to infants of mothers who areunable to breastfeed.

“Breast milk banks are beneficial asnot all mothers are able to produce theirown breast milk. The more banks wehave, the better, as breastfeeding canreduce the morbidity and mortality ofnewborns,” said Moodley.

Celebratingphenomenalwomen>> In celebration of phenomenal womenaround the country, NOKULUNGA NGOBESEspoke to one young inspiring femaleentrepreneur, Nompilo Mgaga.

NOMPILO Mgaga (29), born inKwaDambuza, is theownerofSisipho Strelitzia restaurant

As a younggirl, she enjoyedplaying aroundwith differentflavours whilecooking whichled to hercompleting anInternationalDiploma inHospitalityManagement atVarsity College.Afterworking forvarious compa-nies, shespent sometimeselling foodoutside the Department of Transportoffices, and eventually started herown business.

“Things have not been easy whenyou decide to be your own boss. Itrequires a lot of capital, and it takestime before you can start making aprofit.

“When I decided to stop working,

IaskedmyselfwhyIwantedtocontin-ue running someone else’s businesswhen I could run my own. I had tostart from scratch. Luckily I hadstrong support from my husbandThando and our families.”

Other thanoffering anala carte menu, her restaurantalso hosts chari-ty events, babyshowers andweddings.“Woman mustlearn to standtogether andsupport oneanother. Wemust begenuinely

happy for each other whether infriendship or in business. We arestronger thanwe realise.Menneedto encourage their partners and fa-thers need to encourage their daugh-ters.”

While she admits to still being onher journey to success, she said shewouldnotbewheresheistodayifGodhad not entrusted her tomanage her

wherewe can sit alone and reflect onwhat we have accomplished andwhat we ought to accomplish. This isthe only way that we can evaluatewhether our dreams are materializ-ing.”

Whilemoreandmoreblackpeopleare venturing into the hospitalityindustry, shesaidthereisstillastigmaattached to black caterers.

“Most black caterers assume thatjust because they can cook nice foodfor their families, they can cater forpeople. Catering is an acquired skill. My advice to aspiring caterers is totakepride in theirworkbybeing timeconscious and professional.

“Garnish is also important as onemust take pride in your work, anddonot do it just for the sake ofmoney. Most of all, cook with love, and do itbecause you are passionate.”

In a few years to come, shehopes to have grown the Sisiphobrand to other sectors as well.

You are soft, curvaceous, loving being. You wear you crown inglorious patterns, wavy shapes and delightful colour. You aregraceful, beautiful and even, at times, elegant. You are sweetas marshmallows, irresistible as roast chicken, sometimes yourgenius self counts more than a croissant recipe. You are awoman! A divine being! Let us pay tribute to all the women

who marched in 1956 to the Union Building, protesting againstPass laws. And let us, in this generation, protest against rape

and cruelty shown to children, let us burn bras again, Let us beheard, because who else will nurture this world.

Fiftyeight years ago, about 20 000 women marched to the Unionbuildings to protest against the carrying of passes. They fought fortheir voices to be heard. This day reminds me of the power withina woman to bring about societal change, and to achieve whatevershe has set her mind to. We have been privileged enough to livein a postmodern South Africa, where society is not as patriarchalas it used to be. We have women political leaders, policy makersand women venturing into previously male dominated industries. Thisalone proves that through hard work and determination, the world isour oyster. The Democracy Exhibition is an extensionof the Freedom Exhibition that was launchedlast year. The new exhibition pays tribute tovarious aspects of South Africa’s history, culture, people and struggles.

“Museum’s are a window to the nation’ssoul,” said Mabudafhasi.

This year’s exhibition shows the change inthe country to ensure that, as a nation, no oneforgets where South Africa came from.

“As we continue as a young nation we arebound to make mistakes, but at all times weneedtorememberthosewhohavegonebeforeus and the sacrifices they made when theyfought for our freedom and democracy.”

CHEVROLET, Isuzu and Opel continued thetrend of strong sales in July, giving GeneralMotors South Africa (GMSA) a 10.1% share ofthe market for the month.

Total South African new passenger vehiclesalesinJulystoodat57 670,and5 821ofthesewere from the GMSA stable.

This allowed the company to rise above thetrend, despite the South African motorindustrydecliningby4.7% for theperiod fromJanuary to July, compared to the same periodlast year. July also had 23 selling days, whichhad a positive impact on the overall market.

“July saw Chevrolet models, including theSpark,CruzeandCaptiva, surpassallprevioussales records achieved in 2014. The finalnumberswere1 020 for theSpark,199 for the

Captiva and 356 for the Cruze,” said BrianOlson, GMSA vice-president of vehicle sales, service and marketing.

“The sixth generation Isuzu KB is enjoyingthe brand’s highest share of the one-tonsegment in five years as 1 379 Isuzu KBpickups were sold in July,” said Olson.

“In addition, the Opel Corsa, Astra, andMeriva each recorded their best retailperformances for thisyear.Opelvolumeshavenow increased by 54% so far this year, whencompared to January to July 2013.

“This illustrates that South Africans areechoing the sentiments of European buyers, who are loving the Opel brand and causing itto enjoy a resurgence in the market.” -Supplied.

Bumper July for GMSA brands

Third generation Kia isBOLD AND BACK

PHOTO: SUPPLIEDThe Chevrolet Spark enjoyed a bumper July, with a total of 1 020 models sold across thecountry.

THE third generation Kia Sorentowill be unveiled in Korea nextmonth, featuring bold, swept

back exterior styling, a premium interiorlook and luxury features.

The new model sports a lowerroofline, higherbeltline, amoremuscularstance and deeply sculpted body

surfaces. Together with a larger, moreupright “tigernose” grille, these designchanges have raised the bar on sophistication and style.

The cabin will also create a newstandard of luxury in its segment, thanksto a modern, wraparound dashboard, high quality softtouch materials and a

range of advanced onboard technologies.

Interior styling was led by the brand’sdesign team in Frankfurt, Germany, which cited the finest modern Swisswatches as a key influence during the design phase. The smoothly contouredcabin features softtouch materials,

leather and stitching, as well as Kia’slatest humanmachine interface.

A large infotainment screendominates the centre of the dashboard, which employs long, flowing shapes toenvelope the driver and front passengerand emphasise the width and space ofthe large cabin.

The new Kia Sorento will beshowcased in Korea in late August, andis due to make its European premiere onThursday 2 October at the 2014 ParisMotor Show. It is expected to arrive inSouth African showrooms in the firstquarter of 2015.
