PBL Day 2017:

This year’s PBL day had a particular focus on Mental Wellbeing. Good mental health is about being able to work and study to your full potential, cope with day-to-day life stresses, be involved in your community, and live your life in a free and satisfying way. A person who has good mental health has good emotional and social wellbeing and the capacity to cope with change and challenges. Our day was intended to further break down the stigma surrounding mental illness and inform students of the importance of talking about the issue. The dress up theme of the day was well received by staff and students with everything from pirates and wrestlers to Star Wars characters and even mac and cheese represented. Winners of best dressed went to Bobi-Lee, Oliver, James and Verin. The day started off with students undertaking lessons about mental wellbeing. The lessons were aimed at starting conversations about mental health whilst dispelling myths and breaking down the stigma surrounding the issue. Students discussed the importance of looking after themselves, learnt some tips on how they can develop a healthy headspace and ‘switched off ’ during a mindfulness exercise. The PBL team would like to acknowledge Liz Scott from Grand Pacific Health for her efforts in discussing important lifestyle factors and their relationship to a person’s mental well-being.

PBL Day 2017 Continued: During the middle two periods of the day students were introduced to some activities that they can undertake during their time away from school that can help to keep them feeling energised and develop a healthy emotional mindset. Students were put through their paces in a boxing circuit conducted by Shane Connelly and worked up a sweat in a body weight blast with Taryn from Taryn Lucas fitness. Passive activities that are designed to help relax the body were led by Meredith Lyons who introduced students to transcendental meditation and Paula Casciola took students through an interactive yoga session. Other activities organised included: a chill out space with jigsaws, reading, colouring in, card games, a progressive relaxation session and a just dance session that was enthusiastically met by students. Mr Neenan coordinated this year’s whole school photo shoot with everyone assembling and remaining in position to represent the core value of resilience. The day concluded with a whole school talk about mental health and in particular the importance of looking out for your friends. Sean and Taj spoke to their peer cohort about the significance of and how to ask the question ‘R U ok?’ The boys did a fantastic job and should be commended for their organised and insightful presentation. The main event of the day, the staff vs student ‘Dad Joke Face Off ’, was hosted by our resident school clown Zac. Zac had the crowd in stitches with his muscle man routine and zingy one-liners. The ‘face-off ’ produced a lot of laughs, plus many cringes, and provided a good example of the old adage ‘laughter is the best medicine’! Finally, the video made by Mr Parker’s class featured highlights of the day’s activities and was once again well-received by all involved.

All attending students should be commended for the way they embraced the day, participated in all activities and were responsive to the messages about an important topic that is not openly talked about enough. Students were rewarded with tickets throughout the day for demonstrating our school values of respect, resilience and responsibility. Names were drawn out of a box and winning students awarded with a range of prizes. The PBL team would like to thank everyone who made a contribution to the day, especially Marc Anthony’s surf shop in Eden that donated a gift voucher that was used as a major prize on the day. - Mr Hill - PBL Coordinator

Principal’s Report Term 3 Newsletter 2017 It has been an incredibly busy term with year 12 students recently completing their HSC Drama and Music performances and major works in Design and Technology and Visual Arts being externally marked onsite. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to see these high quality projects when they were presented to the whole school body for viewing. The Creative Art Presentation evening also showcased our talented Music and Drama students. With the HSC examination period looming, 86 Year 12 students will this week celebrate an end to 13 years of schooling. It has been an intense year of study and we are proud to say that most students have approached their final year at EMHS with dedication, commitment and maturity. I would like to take this opportunity to wish our Year 12 students all the very best in their HSC exams and future endeavours.

Year 11 students have successfully completed their Preliminary HSC exams and are now preparing for their final year of study. Well done year 11.

I would like to thank all the parents and community members who attended our consultation seminars during the term and who provided us with their constructive feedback and ideas. We continue to gather information and data to enable us to make informed decisions for the year ahead and as we work together on writing our new school plan for 2018-2020.

Yr 12 Industrial Technology Metal and Engineering Major Projects:

A broad range of projects and supporting portfolios were completed this year incorporating the management and fabrication of seven different but well thought out ideas. Each major project showcases the development of the student’s skill, and allows them to highlight their particular strengths. It is important to include as many elements of metal workshop skill into these projects, including; hot and cold forging, threading, lathe turning operations, sheet and plate marking and layout, various hot and cold joining methods, a range of machine and hand cutting techniques and finishing methods.

This year, Eden Marine High submitted seven projects for marking. These were a pizza oven, drinks bar, double driveway gates, fire pit, adjustable height workbench, hot forging table and a family crest in the form of a metal shield Mr Jason Smith, TAS Teacher. SCLC Art Awards: Congratulations to Keith and Shane who received awards for their creative artworks at the SCLC Art Awards on the 18th of August. Keith won second prize for the stage 5 SCLC Art Award, while Shane won the people’s choice award. Well done boys, what a great achievement!

The NYSF Year 12 Program is as a 12 day residential program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage them to continue their studies in these fields. At the NYSF Year 12 Program run in January each year, participants will visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities, go on site tours, listen to lectures, take part in workshops, go to social events, and participate in group activities that improve communication and presentation skills. Participants also take part in sessions on entrepreneurship, critical thinking and how to work together effectively. The focus is not solely on academic achievements, but on developing well-rounded individuals who have the skills and confidence to determine their futures.

Congraulations Verin: On Saturday the 2nd of September Year 12 Extension History student Verin attended the South Coast History Society’s Our History, Our Heritage day at Club Sapphire in Merimbula. Mr. Peter Lacey, the president of the South Coast History Society invited Verin to speak at the seminar regarding the research topic for her Extension History major work, ‘The Importance of Local History and the Davidson whaling history of Eden’. Verin was interviewed by ABC radio presenter Simon Lauder on the day about the importance of local history and why it is important to young people. Simon noted that Verin was an excellent ambassador for History in her generation. Without a doubt, Verin was the youngest person in attendance on the day and should be commended for her dedication to History and the community. Well done!

Senior Drama Excursion Sydney

This year’s Annual Senior Drama excursion was to Sydney on July 19th-21st, where students engaged in TWO amazing performance experiences and traversed the cityscape on foot. The excursion began with the obligatory public transport experience, which is invaluable for developing independence amongst country students. A rushed dinner and a train ride to Circular Quay for a few harbour side pics preceded the evening’s highlight. Sydney Theatre Company’s production of George Orwell’s ‘1984’ enthralled students as they too were placed inside ‘Big Brother’s’ cameras to watch protagonist Winston fail to stand up to ‘The Party’. We all agreed that this highly political and timely production was truly amazing.

The second day involved a visit to Belvoir Theatre who subsidised our excursion as part of their Country Area Program. Here we saw a hilarious action packed restoration comedy, The Rover. The show proved that theatre is unpredictable when a performer broke her wrist and the actors had to engage in a Q and A with the audience to explain the ending! An unforgettable experience.

The Belvoir Education team also shared invaluable resources for our HSC Module - Black Comedy, as they are the only company to have staged ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’ in Australia. A quick visit to Madame Tussauds for some selfies and a few hours shopping closed off an exhausting day two.

More shopping and trying to pack all of the new goodies into our bags saw us board the Countrylink service home on day 3. We arrived home for some well-needed sleep at 9:30 on Friday evening. Ms Collins, Drama Teacher

HSC Performance Showcase: An exciting evening of entertainment was held at EMHS on Thursday 24th August as HSC students performed their examination pieces for an enthusiastic crowd. All Drama students performed their group performance projects and the music students chose one examination piece to perform.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to show off their performance skills to their families and friends (and some proud staff members too). Supper was served on the evening and, by all accounts, the audience had a wonderful time watching some amazing talent.

Eden Marine High School gets into the community spirit:Eden Marine High School students and staff are in the process of creating light lanterns and sculptures for the 2017 Eden Whale Festival. The lanterns are to endorse the festival’s theme of Marine Creations by the sea.

The lanterns are being constructed from split bamboo, wicker, cane, masking tape, elastic bands, grease proof paper and battery powered tea lights. Where possible, recycled materials are being used. Workshops are on every Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday at lunch time for interested students and staff members. Already, participants have faced a few challenges in regard to weather resistance, weight and durability, whilst also thinking of innovative ways to reflect the environment, wind, water, wood, metal and fire.

On the day of the Twilight Lantern Parade, students will exhibit their creations by making their way from Imlay St to Ross’ Bay. Lanterns will be placed around the foreshore for the general public to admire. Selected lanterns will be for sale with all proceeds going to ongoing Marine Education initiatives at our school. Any donation of materials that could be used for construction of these lanterns would be greatly appreciated. Ms Hornsby, Marine Education Coordinator

Did you know? Skipp: Did you know that plastic pollution travels easily from land to sea? It blows in from bins or flows through stormwater drains into our waterways and eventually out to sea.

Sandy: That’s right Skipp. Once in the ocean, it grad-ually breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces which are eaten by animals of all sizes – from the blue whale to the smallest plankton.

Skipp: I really wish something could be done to reduce plastic in our environment.

Sandy: The solution is to prevent plastic pollution in the first place, by changing our laws and our habits.

Skipp: Like recycling, using refillable drink bottles, BYO shopping bags and coffee cups.

Sandy: Yes Skipp, everybody can make a difference.

Congraulations Georgia: Congratulations to Georgia who has recetly achieved great success at the Short Course State Age Swimming Championships. Georgia achieved2nd 200 Free, Top 10 in 50, 100, 400 free, 100 and 200 Fly and 200 Individual Medley. Well done on your achievements!
