In John 5, there is a story being played out by the pool at Bethzatha. It’s a disempowering story that an unnamed man lived for thirty- eight years, and Jesus Christ strode into the middle of that old story in order to write a new story in that person’s life. Perhaps Christ is also inviting you into a more gospel-shaped story. During worship on Sunday, I look forward to exploring this together. Faithfully, Lindsay P. W e a l l h a v e stories to tell.

In my family, there is the story of my great-grandparents sneaking out of their houses as teens , leaving in the middle of the night to elope.

They stayed happily married for 60 years.

There’s the story of my father-in-law coming out of retirement 3 times now, repeatedly starting, building, and then selling businesses. he’s now thinking again about retirement. We’ll believe it when we see it. There are stories of athletic feats, scary health crises, challenges with work, and friends who are always there. We all have stories; yet, what are the stories you tell about yourself? What is the story you are living into right now? What are the stories you tell yourself about your work, family, health, happiness, stability, friendships, or relationship with God? youth who have experienced traumatic change, usually due to divorce, abandonment or death. ProGraMs & events

B e g i n n i n g S a t u r d a y , August 20, 2011, volunteers from First Presbyterian Church (FPC) will partner with volunteers from Radcliffe Presbyterian Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, St. Mark United Methodist Church, and the Parsonson Foundation to build a new, environmentally-friendly Habitat house here in Atlanta for a new homeowner and family. Construction of the house will occur on seven Saturdays (August 20 and 27; September 10, 17 and 24; October 1 and 8). The work day begins at 8 a.m. and ends

about 4 p.m. Lunch is furnished on

site as are all needed tools. No

skill or construction experience is required. FPC has constructed thirty one (31) Habitat homes since we began in the 1980s. Please contact Bill Earnest (404/351-8030 or Wil l [email protected]) for more information or to sign-up. As sign-ups will be a “first come” basis, make your reservation(s) early as FPC only has room for ten (10) volunteers each Saturday.

What is FOCUS?Foundations Of Christian UnderStanding is a theo-logical forum that is held annually at FPC. This year, Dr. Tom Tewell will lead us in reflection on the im-pact and opportunities of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Kathryn and Jim Claffey serve as our 2011 FOCUS Chairs. Who is Our Speaker?The Reverend Dr. Thomas K. Tewell is the Executive Director of Faith Based Ministries for the Cousins Foundation. Having served as the Senior Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in New Providence, New Jersey, the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas and the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church of New York City, Dr. Tewell now directs the Macedonian Ministries, a ministry of renewal which focuses on mentoring and coaching pastors to help their congregations grow spiritually, numerically, and in their commitment to the mission of Jesus Christ in the world. Dr. Tewell has taught seminars on preach-ing, leadership and stewardship, and has led confer-ences and retreats around the country. He has pub-lished sermons and has written articles for Theology Today, Christianity Today, and the Christian Century. He was Senior Pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City when the terrorists attacked the World Trade Centers. since childhood, Lauren graduated Berry Col-lege with a degree in Middle Grades Educa-tion as well as ESOL endorsement and Reading Certification. She began her teaching career in private schools, first teaching at the Inter-national Christian School in Vienna, Austria. Upon returning to the U.S., Lauren taught for six years in Rockdale County, GA. Lauren’s ideal is to create and maintain the environment Einstein alluded to when he wrote, “I never teach my pupils, I only create the conditions in which they can learn.” An elder at Morrow Presbyterian Church, Lauren is excited as well as uniquely gifted to lead FPC’s vibrant elementary ministry. FPC Atlanta New Member Mission Trip October 2-8, 2011

Join us as we share in the hands-on work of rebuilding homes in New Orleans, learn about the situation in the Gulf Coast, get a taste of bayou cooking, and share in relaxed fellowship with other FPC members and volunteers from around the country. You don’t need to be skilled in construction; Project Homecoming is set up for volunteers of all skill levels. And the cost of everything for this trip is only $300 per person!
