In the Lord’s Supper, those Presbyterian church leaders envisioned “a great opportunity to unite the membership in dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ”, and in 1937, the General Assembly changed the date of World Communion to the first Sunday in October where it remains today. So on this coming October 3, the faithful of all races and nations and tongues and classes will unite in sharing communion around the globe, offering ourselves in obedient service to the Kingdom of God which Jesus Christ proclaimed “has come near - repent and believe in the good news!” (Mark 1:15). Here at the corner of 16th and Peachtree, we will meet in the sanctuary for World Communion at 9:00 and 11:15 am, focusing our attention on the theme “The Sermon on the Mount: What The World Needs Now”, with the text taken from Matthew 5:21-37. I look forward to seeing all of you in worship, and to the grand and glorious celebration we will share with millions of believers “coming from east and west and north and south to sit at the table in the Kingdom of God” (Matthew 8:11). Faithfully yours, George B. Wirth s we launch our Annual Giving Campaign here at First Presbyterian Church on October 10, I am so grateful for the leadership of our Campaign chairs Stuart Bondurant, Eddie Newsom and Tad Little and their committee who have dedicated their time, energy and vision to raising the resources needed for the ministry and mission of this great congregation in the coming year! Our theme, “In God We Trust” is familiar to all of us, not only because that phrase appears on our U.S. currency but also because those words are deeply embedded in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and in our Judeo- Christian tradition. The title for the sermon is “American Idols vs. In God We Trust” and the text is found in Matthew 6:1-4, 19-21 and verse 24. Far too many people in this country are still enamored with gold that glitters and the goddess of success, even though the reality of this recession has rocked the financial foundations we once thought were secure. In the midst of these uncertain times, we need to listen again to what Jesus said about the real values of life in God’s Kingdom: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). So please come join us for worship at 9:00 and 11:15 on Sunday morning as we begin another Stewardship Season, and let us carefully and prayerfully consider what God is calling us to give and the way He wants us to live as faithful disciples who follow the Lord Jesus Christ. I look forward to seeing you in church, and hope that you will invite your family and friends to come along as well! Faithfully yours, George B. Wirth October 3 & 10 - George Wirth to preach
