Sterilization is NOT the ONLY Answer!Spring is here! With it, will soon follow anexplosion of spring babies. To reduce thisconstant overflow of innocent fur-babies toshelters, we as their caretakers must decide tostep up and take responsibility. The era of 'nothaving the time,' just not caring enough orturning our backs and allowing 'nature to takeits course' is over.

Such lower-consciousness mentality has noplace in today's enlightening world.

In Europe, only a small percentage of pets aresterilized, yet somehow they do NOT experi-ence the mass, unwanted pet explosion wehere in North America have each year. Why isthat? Do Europeans love their pets more thanNorth Americans do? Not necessarily. Wherethey clearly have us beat, is in a word, RE-SPONSIBILITY. They do not leave pet re-production up to the natural urges andjudgement calls of their occasionally, hor-mone-driven, pets!

1. They do not allow their males to roam indiscriminately.

2. When their females go into heat, which indogs, is only twice per year for a couple of weeks, they keep them away from un-protected sex! Why does this work for them?

Because, it isn't thought of as an inconven-ience, but rather, a normal part of 'life'.

In North America we relentlessly focus onbutchering our animals in a seemingly never-ending assembly line of sterilization. This lineof thinking and action has NOT been able tocontrol the issue of unwanted pets! We don'tautomatically give hysterectomies and vasec-tomies to our children when they become hor-monally-'challenged', and we would NEVERsterilize 7 and 8 week old babies, knowingfull well, they need their parts & hormones togrow into healthy adults. It is the opinion ofthis author (and only this author's opinion)that the current automaton method of ad-dressing pet over-population is completely offthe mark.

I keep in mind that most every Shelter is per-petually working in 'overwhelm' with anabundance of homeless animals, too littleman-power and financial support. And some(not all!)Veterinarians may just be blindly fol-lowing their school's out-dated training with-out questioning the changing times. As inevery profession, there are some that do theirjob more for making money, as opposed toanswering a 'calling.' (additionally to ridicu-lously over-priced sterilizations, there aresome pushing far too many vaccinations aswell as selling dead, kibbled foods and other

'pet store' products from their office) At best,it's a 'wham-bam, thank you Ma’am' thoughtprocess to end pet-overpopulation, IF there isany real thought put into it at all!

Here then is this author's alternative sugges-tions to address this very serious issue. Please,let's stop throwing our limited resources intoa system that is failing! Better use of thesefunds would be in EDUCATING the publicin the responsibilities of pet-custodianshipand alternative ways of preventing unwantedpet reproduction.

• Educate children. If parent's can't/won't doit, implement school programs from kinder-garten on up, reinforcing through each grade,responsible pet-custodianship. Starting themyoung, and positively reinforcing as theygrow, will quickly produce a new generationof responsible adults.• Create and enforce stricter laws to endpuppy mills once and for all. The only reasonpuppy mills exist is because of human apathyand greed. These are cruel and inhumaneplaces. If you know of one, BE RESPONSI-BLE and TELL the authorities.• END 'Franken-puppy' breeders! The worlddoesn't need a new 'mixed-breed'. There aremore than enough qualified breeds fromwhich to choose, for every potential need. Wemust focus on taking care of those that are liv-ing today! Can you guess how many puppieswill be tossed aside in their quest to find thenewest 'Franken-puppy'? One, is too many.• Breeders of 'recognized breeds' should belimited as to how many litters and how manyyears between litters. Responsible breedersalready do this, but not all are RESPONSI-BLE.• Most of all, DO YOUR PART. Take 'being'as in, 'being a loving, responsible pet custo-dian' as an action word. If you say you loveyour pets as 'family members' then treat themas such.• Watch out for them as you would any cher-ished, family member. Keep them safe andhealthy.• Flush out irresponsible breeders where youcan. If someone is breeding each time theirbitch goes into heat, or trying to create a'Franken-puppy' tell them it's unethical and toSTOP.• Speak up where you can. Have a dialoguewith your neighbours if they have their petsrun hodge-podge through town. If you cantalk to a child, you can formulate and volun-teer to give a 'responsible pet custodian' talkfor a local school.

Responsibility is a CHOICE that begins withyou and me. If you know you will not be a re-sponsible pet-custodian, then please, by allmeans GET YOUR PET STERILIZED!
