How to Get Unstuck From Constipation Woes.Feeding your pet an enjoyable, species-appropriate, balanced diet is key to ahealthy elimination system. However, oc-casionally your pet may suffer from sim-ple constipation. In this case, there areeasy solutions to keeping your pet's bow-els moving along. Remember, there aremany reasons why a pet may becomeconstipated, some are as simple as notenough water in the diet, (in hot weatherpets need extra water!) others may be se-rious. If these remedies don't work, don'twait any longer, it could be a conditionwhich needs your Veterinarian's immedi-ate attention.

How do you know if your pet is consti-pated? Tell-tale signs are straining and ei-ther nothing comes out or just a tinyamount after great effort. He may go offhis food. He may hunch over, look un-comfortable, show a lack of energy, oreven look depressed.

Some cats become constipated by retain-ing their waste, refusing to use a dirty lit-ter box. They aren't trying to be difficult.If you were designated a small box topoop in, how would you feel if it were al-ready filled with urine and feces? Cats arevery clean animals with a much strongersense of smell than ours! Wouldn't weALL prefer to use a clean toilet? Hopingyou can wait 'just one more day' beforecleaning the litter box may result in forc-ing your cat to hold it in or use 'anywhereelse' as their bathroom. It's not worth it!

Other cats may not relieve themselves inunfamiliar surroundings. (a lot of peopleare like that too!) Some cannot get theirbowels moving because they aren't mov-ing enough themselves! An older cat mayneed a little extra encouragement to getup and move around to have the neededexercise or play for healthy, bowel-move-ments. A new, intriguing cat-specific toymay help motivate her.

If you still feed one of those dry, kibbledfoods at least add some wet food to itdaily, especially for cats who unlike dogs,will drink very little water from a stag-nant bowl. Moisture is very important tokeep constipation at bay. You can also adda little pureed, or finely chopped, greenleafy vegetables daily to your pet's diet.If hesitant, add a spot of butter to get them

A few spoons from a baby foodjar of organic green beans or squash areexcellent and easy, time-saving additions!You can mix in a tsp of coconut oil intofood or if solidified, just drop sameamount down in front of your pet as Ihaven't met a pet yet that doesn't LOVEcoconut oil! (Give regularly to cats in-stead of hairball petroleum, or mineraloil, works excellently and is much health-ier!)

Easy fixers for simple constipation, useone only:

Add plain, canned 100% pumpkin to yourpet's meal (not the pie filling!) One tsp.per 10pds. You can feed a 1/4 -1 tsp ofAloe Vera juice along with a few drops ofliquid Chlorophyll mixed in with yourpet's food. This works as a very gentlelaxative as well as an internal cleanser.Sprinkling 1/4 tsp Slippery Elm(healthfood store) in their food or making aslurry from it (follow directions on pack-age) will help the constipated tummytremendously. Probiotics in the form of asmall bowl of Kefir will help the tummy'sinternal flora balance. Also, adding di-gestive enzymes to a meal every few days(or every day for an elderly cat) will alsohelp clear up constipation. Never use'human' laxatives, high fibre grains, orgive a 'home' enema to your pet.

Constipation in birds is serious. Check tomake sure the 'vent' area is clean and notblocked by stuck feathers, if blocked,very gently clean with warm water. Callyour Avian Vet Specialist.

Constipation in Rabbits and other preyanimals, who never show signs of illnessuntil very sick, can signal 'gastrointesti-nal stasis' which is an emergency andshould be immediately handled by yourVeterinarian.

If your pet has been constipated for over24hours, or has also been vomiting,please get him to the vet ASAP! Thiscould be a blockage, which is very differ-ent than simple constipation. It is verypainful and is a medical emergency.
