GOLF’S OLDEST MAJORCHAMPIONSHIP WILL RETURN TO THE EAST LOTHIAN COAST FOR THE 16TH TIME IN 2013 AND IT PROMISES TO BE A FITTINGCELEBRATION OF THE GAME IN ONE OF ITS FINEST THEATRES.

Muirfield is widely regarded as one of the greatest tests of links golf in theworld. Jack Nicklaus, the 1966 OpenChampion at Muirfield, once famouslysaid of the course: “What you see iswhat you get.” While Muirfield is everybit as challenging and intimidating asthe other venues on The Open rota, it is perhaps the fairest challenge of themall with no hidden hazards or surprises.The front nine runs clockwise aroundthe inner loop of the homeward ninewhich runs broadly in the oppositedirection forcing players to face windsfrom all directions. Muirfield isundoubtedly a shot-maker’s course. Over the years some of the greatestplayers in the game have lifted theClaret Jug at Muirfield including Harry

Vardon, James Braid, Walter Hagen,Henry Cotton, Gary Player, JackNicklaus, Tom Watson, Sir Nick Faldoand, of course, Ernie Els.

The last time the Championship wasplayed at Muirfield in 2002 Els won in dramatic fashion after a play-offagainst Australians Stuart Appleby and Steve Elkington and FrenchmanThomas Levet. Els edged out Levet witha par four in the sudden death play-offon the 18th hole after they finishedtied ahead of Appleby and Elkington in the four-hole play-off.

With Els having notched up his secondvictory in The Open at Royal Lytham &St Annes last year, he will be very much

looking forward to returning to Muirfieldas the defending Open Champion inboth senses. Among those expected tochallenge him will be world number oneRory McIlroy, three-time Open ChampionTiger Woods and victorious EuropeanRyder Cup stars Ian Poulter, Luke Donald,Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose, LeeWestwood and Paul Lawrie. The likes of Bubba Watson, Brandt Snedeker and Phil Mickelson will lead theAmerican challenge. Australian AdamScott, who came so close in 2012, and2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizencould also be contenders.

The favourite of many locals, GullaneNo.2 hosted the 2002 Seniors OpenAmateur Championship. The courseruns down Gullane Hill towards thenature reserve at Aberlady Bay.Although this links has plenty of length it is the testing short holesthat offer the greatest challenge.

Haddington Golf Club provides anenjoyable round in a quiet, countryestate. Mature trees line most holesand the River Tyne is the course’s northboundary forming the out-of-bounds at holes 11 and 15.
