EDITOR’S NOTES

Welcome to the East Brent

Parish magazine. By now you must all know that Molly the Editor of the East Brent & Rooksbridge Maga-

zine for the past few years, has de-cided to resign. We must, therefore, open this first edition of the East Brent

Parish Magazine with a BIG thank you to Molly for all of her past work and wish her well for the future; we must also thank the Parish Council

for a donation with which to start this magazine as well as all those people that have kindly and timely contributed articles, reviews and

reports. You will probably notice that there are very few adverts in this

issue but if you would like to adver-tise your business or an event, please contact the Editorial Team. The deadline for the following

month's edition is the 10th.

To deliver this magazine

free to all East Brent Parishioners, we rely heavily on our team of dis-tributors, again another BIG thank

you to you, you know who you are! – if at any time you, as a distributor, cannot help out, please let us know in good time in order that we can

make other arrangements. This month, on Sunday 9th, we are remembering the beginning of the First World War and all those

that served in it. Further inside this edition you will find an article by The Rev Simon Lewis – please take time to read it.

We would welcome any comments on the new magazine as well as any contributions – have

you got a favourite recipe to share? have you got a story to tell? Have you any observations on the Parish? Please, share them with

us. Bill Walker – Editor

The East Brent Parish Magazine is produced and distributed free of charge by a team of volunteers who give their free time throughout the year to ensure the magazine is published.

It is intended that they will be distributed at the beginning of each month and contributions and advertisements should be provided by the 10th of the preceding month.

EAST BRENT VILLAGE HALL NEWS

Improvements and maintenance continue apace at the Village Hall. There is always a project underway or in the planning. The latest one is essential repair work following storm damage in February when a large section of barge board was blown down from the building – thankfully not to the detriment of property or people as this all happened in the early hours of the morning. The project involves refurbishment of the timber barge, capping and fascia boards on all four gables thus ensuring no repetition and preserving the roof of the building for the foreseeable future. Grant applications were made to South West Housing Society Community Fund, Viridor Credits and the Big Lottery Fund (Awards for All) all of which have been successful resulting in sums of £400, £3,600 and £3,000 respectively, towards the £9,600 project. The balance will come from our own funds. We hope work will be underway in the near future. The Committee has always been a little concerned about the necessity of using door wedges to keep the fire doors open. Whilst fully understanding the need to do so when moving equipment or allowing for free movement of children or older people around the building, it did represent a fire hazard. Regular users of the Hall will now be familiar with the newly installed Freedor free-swing automatic door closers which have been fitted to 3 of the doors. These allow for the doors to be left in the open position, but will react by closing, should the fire alarm be activated. Once again we are very pleased to announce that we have received our Hallmark Award from the Community Council for Somerset which recognises the quality of the maintenance and management of the Hall – nothing like blowing your own trumpet from time to time!! The Award needs to be renewed every 3 years when an inspection is made of the premises and all paperwork pertaining to the Hall management. As another AGM approaches may we once again invite anyone who would like to join us, to attend. We will be meeting on Wednesday 22nd October at 7.30 in the Village Hall and would be delighted to welcome some new members to our Committee. We meet monthly with the exception of August and December on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Our excellent Chairman keeps us focussed and the discussion relevant so that our meetings are to the point and as brief as possible. Please do give it some thought, you will be made very welcome. East Brent Reading Group

Rosemary Sutcliff’s

The Eagle of the Ninth

Rosemary Sutcliff CBE (14/12/1920 – 23/7/1992) was a British

novelist best known for children’s books, especially historical

fiction and retellings of myths and legends. Although she was

primarily a children’s author, the quality and depth of her writing

also appeals to adults. In a 1986 interview she said, “I would claim that my books are for children of

all ages, from nine to ninety. She was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1959, the Horn Book Award in

1972 and the Phoenix Award in 1985 and 2010.

This book is considered to be her best known title. It has been adapted several times, most

notably as the 2011 film ‘The Eagle’.

It centres on a young Roman officer Marcus Flavius Aquila, discharged because of a battle

wound, tries to discover the truth about the disappearance of his father’s legion in Northern Britain in

the second century AD, after the building of Hadrian’s Wall. Travelling as a Greek oculist he finds out

more about the last moments of the Ninth legion and the whereabouts of the Eagle Standard.

Intrigue, tremendous excitement, historical fiction and an appealing adventure is all there.

Some of the group felt it was not a character study but useful as a research source. The Museum of

Reading that houses the Silchester Eagle states that ‘ it is not a legionary eagle but has been

immortalised as such by Rosemary Sutcliff.

An Interesting Story! Two Men in a Boat (part 1 of 2)

One day Barry, a good friend of mine, said to me “would you like to help me sail my boat

around to Falmouth?”

A simple question really except that the boat was on Blake’s boat yard slip on the River

Brue in Highbridge and Falmouth is, of course, ‘round the end’ in the English Channel.

The boat in question was a ‘Phillip’s 32’, a really nice comfortable long keeled sea boat,

so I said “yes, when?” So we settled on a date, arranged annual leave from work, got all the

necessary charts and provisions and set off early one Summer Friday morning at high tide.

I had done the trip several times before on other boats so I was looking forward to it. We

left Highbridge on a falling tide and as soon as we had cleared Hinkley Point we marked our

course on the relevant charts, because this was before the luxury of ‘satnav’, sorted out who

was going to be on watch and then settled down to enjoy the trip.

The weather forecast had said that there was some bad weather expected from the

west, but we estimated that by the time it arrived we would be around Lands End and into the

English Channel and the wind would help us on to Falmouth. So we set a cruising jib and

mainsail and with a good steady wind from the NE we made good headway. We sailed under

these conditions all night and through the next morning passing Minehead, Ilfracombe, with

Lundy off to starboard down past Padstow and on to St Ives. We made good progress until we

reached Cape Cornwall. There the wind headed us, that is to say that the wind shifted to the

south west so that it was coming from dead ahead. So we tacked. And tacked. And tacked. After

many hours we were hardly any further forward on our course because the wind was getting

stronger. And stronger. And stronger. The bad weather had arrived and beaten us to Lands End.

At this point we heard the coast guard calling to a yacht off of Cape Cornwall on the

radio. As we were the only yacht out there we assumed that they were calling us so we

answered and were advised that the bad weather had developed and they suggested that we

make landfall. We were aware of this of course, for we had been listening to the weather

forecasts regularly and the sea was getting decidedly ‘lumpy’.

From the chart the nearest place that I thought we might safely shelter was St Ives Bay

or possibly St Ives harbour so, reluctantly, we shortened sail to a storm jib and rolled the main

down to the size of a very large handkerchief and altered our course to NE to head back the way

we had come. By now we had lost the daylight and the wind had increased. We picked up the

entrance to St Ives bay and headed in but by the time we had made the entrance the waves

were extremely high and there seemed no way that we could reach the harbour. So we bore

away back out into the sea, again turned NE and ran. We decided that our only hope would be

to run before the wind up to Lundy Island, for there there is a safe anchorage in the lee of the

island. By this time the wind had increased to storm force and with the auto-pilot steering we

absolutely flew along.

Both of us were wearing safety harnesses clipped on to the boat and all we could do by

this time was to sit in the cockpit with our backs to the bulkhead and look aft and hang on. The

waves grew higher and higher, it was difficult to say how high but was it was very frightening to

feel them lift the boat up from the stern, pass underneath and drop us down - you could not so

much see the waves as feel them coming and when one had passed you sat and waited for the

next. Anon

Continued next month.

As part of our nations remembering of the beginning of the First World War (the ‘Great War’), a small group of local people from our three parish councils – Lympsham, East Brent and Brent Knoll – are joining together to remember those who served in many ways during the First World War, be it at home, on the farm, or in the Armed Forces, or who grew up in this area during that period.

Week before Remembrance Sunday This group - called ‘Remember WW1’ - is arranging a series of events in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday on 9th November 2014: we have entitled the week Remembering WW1. Each parish’s church will have a general exhibition plus one relating specifically to the fallen in their own parish. Then starting on Monday 3 November, during the evenings, we will remember the First World War through presentation, talk, music, story and film. These evening events will take place in our three church buildings: a short list is given below. A full programme will be advertised in due course of what, where and when.

Remembrance Sunday

Our week of remembering will culminate on Remembrance Sunday with our usual Acts of Remembrance at our three war memorials, all starting at 10.50am (at Brent Knoll this continues straight afterwards with a Service of Remembrance). Then at 3.00pm in St Mary’s Church, East Brent, there will be a prayer vigil for peace called, ‘WE WILL REMEMBER’.

Muffled Bells rung to Remember Commencing Monday 4th August, the anniversary of the start of World War 1, you will hear over the next twelve months, a muffled bell rung (for a period of ten minutes) commemorating the anniversary date of death of each serviceman named on our three memorials. The bell will be rung from the church tower of the village in which the serviceman is named on the memorial. The following page gives the list of servicemen and when their anniversary bell will be rung.

We hope you will join us for the events during Remembering WW1 week, particularly Remembrance Sunday. Also, will you pause for a moment when you hear a muffled bell, just to ponder on the notion of someone giving their life for another, and pray this prayer about peace, or at least reflect on its sentiments:

We turn to you, God, asking that you enfold our planet in your justice, peace and truth. Enlighten the minds of those making decisions, melt the hearts of those inflicting cruelty upon your children, and strengthen the resolve of all who pray for peace. And may God bless us – and the peoples who share our planet. Amen.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Simon Lewis Priest-in-Charge

Community Public Access Defibrillator

Neighbourhood Watch

(RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING – SOMERSET WEST – SOMERSET MESSAGE) GENERAL REMINDER REGARDING CALLERS AT THE DOOR – please remember not to have dealings with any unsolicited callers whether thay are at the door, sending Emails or writing to you. They may be offering to buy or sell items; perhaps offering to provide crime prevention advice, repair guttering or cut trees down; or they may ask to gain access inside the property. Whatever the excuse do not have dealings with them in any form. Remember all suspicious activity or callers should be reported as soon as possible to the police on 101 or in an emergency 999 SEASONAL REMINDER -the end of the month will find many people enjoying Halloween. However we are aware that some people prefer not to have Halloween revellers at the door on this evening. We have flyers at this office that aim to reduce such callers and if you would like copies, please contact

Lindsey at the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Office either by contacting your local NHW coordinator or by telephone on 01278 644799. By the beginning of November we will see Firework celebrations and of course the Carnival Season. The police ask that if you are going out to enjoy or take part in these events, you take care to ensure that properties are kept secure and alarms activated where they are fitted. Perhaps also consider leaving lights on timers or a radio on a talk channel to make properties appear as if they are occupied. Some security items such as timers are available at a competitive price from the NHW office, again contact Lindsey direct if you would like details/order form. If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For

general information about NHW nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

East Brent Parish’s second defibrillator is finally in place outside Brent Area Medical Centre on Brent Road, adding to the one already situated outside Rooksbridge Post Office. This second one is located beside the medical centre sign so easily accessible from the roadside and we are grateful to East Brent electrician, Councillor Steve McGreavy, for installing it.

Unfortunately, we were unable to install it in the old phone box as planned because the electricity supply had already been disconnected and the cost of

re-connecting it was proving prohibitively expensive, despite the fact that the trickle charge supply required was minimal. When Brent Area Medical Centre kindly offered to provide a suitable location and to pay the electricity bill, we felt that acceptance was the best option to avoid further delay. Tied in with the installation of the two defibrillators, we are setting up the Village Emergency Telephone System (VETS). This system is outlined below and we already have 10 names (including 4 couples) of members of the Parish who have volunteered to be part of it. NO First Aid

qualification is required. A further defibrillator familiarisation session, open to everyone in the Parish, has been arranged for: MONDAY 20

th OCTOBER AT 7PM at the East Brent

Village Hall

Martin Fagin, secretary of the Community Heartbeat Trust, will be taking the session which is designed to demonstrate how easy it is for anyone to use a Community Public Access Defibrillator (CPAD). We hope to get as many people as possible to attend the session. We obviously hope that our two Defibrillators will never be needed but hope that their availability and accessibility will be of help and comfort should an emergency arise. The installation of these CPADs has been possible thanks to the generous contributions of many businesses and individuals throughout the Parish. Please contact Judy Webb on 01278 760219 or [email protected] if you have any questions at all or if you would like to volunteer for VETS.

EAST BRENT PARISH HISTORY GROUP

This edition of the Magazine is limited for space, so I will only be able to give a short review of the History Group’s activities over the last few months. I hope to catch up with more information in later editions or please look online for more information. Let me know if you would like a full copy of these reports. The Isle of Wedmore Remembers the Great War, 1914-19 (5th March)

A report on Dr. Tim Moreman’s talk meeting was unfortunately delayed. But I can now provide a summary.

Dr. Moreman’s research project started in 2011 and looks at those who died and a selection of servicemen who returned from the whole Isle of Wedmore (defined as being Wedmore, Blackford, Theale, Cocklake, Clewer, Mudgley and the Allertons). His main aim is to try and bring these men ‘alive’ to the local children and make them fully aware that the otherwise mute names on the local War Memorials actually represent ‘real people’.

The Shadow of the Workhouse –2nd April 2014.

This talk concentrated on life in Axbridge Union Workhouse from its opening in 1836 until its official closing as a Workhouse in 1929.

The Axbridge Poor Law Union initially comprised of 38

parishes stretching as far north Yatton and included Blagdon, Cheddar, Wedmore, Burnham on Sea and of course East Brent. Axbridge was built for 300 inmates but the average number resident at any one time was under 200.

Meeting Notes – 4th June 2014

At this meeting we mainly discussed the book “In a Good Light” which tells of Rev. John Derrick’s (JGD) visits to Somerset and East Brent/Lympsham in particular. He purchased Chestnut Farm in East Brent in 1897 and in 1899 began building a new house (St. Martin’s) in the orchard. (see below) JGD was an avid photographer and the book contains photographs taken in East Brent and around Somerset.

This picture of St. Martin’s was taken soon after its completion. The last meeting prior to the Summer break was on 2nd July and was a “Member’s Meeting” where members discussed their memories of the Parish.

Future Meetings

East Brent Parish History Group Meetings take place at 7:00 pm in East Brent Village Hall generally on the first Wednesday of each month. The next meeting is due on 5th November 2014 when John Strickland will give a talk on a “Day Trip to Burnham by Train”. Please check before as the date may change due to the WW1 Remembrance events. Further talks will occur as follows : 7th Jan. 2015 - Andrew Janes “From Farmer’s Field to Flanders Field”. 4th Mar. 2015 - Kay Wych “Housemaid at Glastonbury Abbey” with costumes. All are welcome at any meeting. If you have any photos & memories, please bring them along. Thanks to donations, we now have a scanner and computer permanently available for use at our meetings. Photographs and documents are precious and don’t need to leave your possession. There are many stories to be told. I look forward to seeing you there. PAINTING THE PORCH

A housepainter was engaged to paint a conservatory. The owner was so pleased with the result that he asked the painter if he had enough paint left to paint the porch.

The man agreed and a couple of hours later he came round to the garden and said :

“There you are Guv. It’s all done, but it’s a Ferrari – not a Porsch!”

Thursday Club

Village Hall Carpet Bowls Club

The Thursday Club was started in East Brent around 10 years ago with many of the original members still being with us. It was decided that the Committee would change each year, giving everyone a chance to 'have a go' and not have the same people doing it for years on end. The Committee usually comprises of three people, Chairperson, Social Secretary & Treasurer, but we don't always stick to those jobs, often sharing, depending on who's doing it! We usually start the evening at 7.30pm with a welcome and a few notices about absentees, this is interesting because then we get to hear about how people are getting on if they have been absent for a while. Next the Guest Speaker is introduced and over the years we have had some very entertaining and interesting speakers who have been engaged by previous Committees. The topics are varied, with this year being no exception. We've ranged from the story teller Jane Flood, with her guitar which was a very relaxing evening, to a nostalgic look back at various music hall acts and musicals, a talk on the Lahimba Project ( a charity in Africa helping to build schools for children), a demo making luxury chocolate, a look into the workings of Steepholm and our most recent talk on the Axbridge Workhouse, which I didn't know had ever existed!

A couple of talks from last year stand out for me, one was a man cooking exotic meats which included ostrich, wild boar and zebra - all of which tasted better than you might think. The other was from one of our own members, Lynn, who makes beautiful quilts and bags etc. She gave us a colourful evening, displaying some of her own designs and also some from a women's refuge where she teaches quilting. We meet on the second Thursday of the month in East Brent Village Hall, except for August when, for the last few years, we have been having a skittles evening at the local pub and, depending on the Committee of the year, our December meeting is a Christmas Meal at the Village Hall or in a pub. We are a friendly chatty group and have a steady membership, but would love to see more people coming to our meetings. So, if you are new to the area, or would like an evening out, why not check us out. You don't have to join immediately but can be a guest for an evening for £2.00, this also includes a cup of tea/coffee/squash and cake/biscuits. Our next talk is from Tony Buller on falconry. Mary-Ellen Harris Committee Member.

The Carpet Bowls club has reached the end of another successful year (Oct – Sep) and we congratulate the trophy winners for 2014 as follows: the singles champion Bill Griffin, the pairs winners Gaynor Linnett partnered by Gordon Williams and the target champion who is to be announced on 7

th October.

Our annual Christmas Dinner outing will be at The Lamb at Axbridge on Wednesday 17

th December at 7pm

The Club has been running since 1998 and we currently have 17 members. We meet at 7.15pm every Tuesday evening and if you would like to give carpet bowls a try please just come along or give Tony Collins a call on01278 769036. The cost of the evening is just £3 and you don't need special shoes to play. You will find the evening will be very relaxed, lots of chatting and gossip, a hot drink and a little bowling now and then!

EAST BRENT HARVEST HOME 2014

This year’s Harvest Home took place on Friday, 22nd August and was a great success. No

doubt this was helped along by wonderful weather – skies more or less clear and not too hot

with light wind. Perfect weather for the Parade of the Puddings (and bread & cheese) as well

as for the sports and children’s entertainment. I think the following comments sums it up :

“... on behalf of my family and myself what a wonderful time we had at the East Brent harvest home.

................ it is such a wonderful tradition thank you so much for all the effort and hard work that you

all put in. By the way the food was delicious, thank you.”

An unusual start to the Harvest Home was by having the Church Service in the marquee. This

was very well received and most people joined in. The Burtle Silver Band played exceptionally

well during the lunch and led the parades. The toast to “Agriculture & Kindred Industries” was

given by Mark Thomas (Headteacher of Brymore Academy) and responded to by Jeff Fear

(Chairman of the Axe Brue Drainage Board). Further toasts and speeches were made by

Russell Dixon and Tessa Munt MP.

The BasonBridge Inn provided the bar and we were grateful to Molly Muddles and “The

Parachute Man” for entertaining the children and Jayne Watkins oversaw the sports. The New

Society Jazz Band played during the early evening.

This year, the helpers proudly wore aprons displaying the East Brent Harvest Home logo which

we are grateful to George Collins of Batch Bathrooms for sponsoring them (see below). We

also give special thanks to Yvonne Claridge for making and donating this year’s special banner

which remembers the fallen from East Brent in WW1.

Please excuse the short report and put 28th August 2015 in your diary for the next Harvest

Home (158th Anniversary Year). Colin Loader (Chairman)

This year, the Harvest Home Committee have produced a calendar for 2015 which is full of photographs from past Harvest Homes which is truly described as a “Somerset Institution”. Please take this opportunity to purchase one (or more) of the remaining copies. They will make a great Christmas present for friends or relatives near or far. Copies are available from Betty Griffin tel: 01278 760754
