There exists a golden thread, which leads out of thelabyrinth of our broken reality and towards the Truth. The Lectorium Rosicrucianum, or International School

of the Golden Rosycross, aims to help seekers find and form aliving connection with this shining filament, which is wovenof love, wisdom, knowledge (gnosis) and action.

Most importantly, this goldenthread is a Path that can actual-ly be walked, a Path shown byall religions in their originalform. No Master or Initiate cangive the Truth to another. Itcan only be approached by ourown efforts, and by perseveringthroughout all the obstructionsand difficulties we encounteron the way. And it can only bereached through an innerprocess of transformation called'soul-rebirth', or 'transfigura-tion'. A bonafide School pointsout the Path of transfigurationand teaches its pupils how tofollow it.

It is not the I-central self, or personality, that profits from theprocess of transfiguration as meant here, but the inner, divineSelf, which is awakened and enabled to become increasinglyactive. This has tremendous results for the personality: he orshe becomes an instrument, a servant, of another Order, theDivine Order, the 'kingdom not of this world', and in thatstate is able to stand right in the midst of the world in theservice of every human being.

The Lectorium Rosicrucianum is a modern organization in thesense that its message is adapted to the strongly individualizedconsciousness of twenty-first century humanity. However, ithas deep roots in the past, for it is part of the long and ancienttradition of Mystery Schools, and is a development of earlierimpulses of spiritual awakening such as those of the gnostics,Cathars and classical Rosicrucians of the 17th century.

Of the great awakening

The whole of humanity is standing atthe outset of a great cosmic event, a ‘cos-mic spring’, in which humanity will beable to develop in a totally new way.The first requirement for this is to bidfarewell to the old structures and ap-proach a new ensoulment with an openmind.

We who have suffered the ‘loss of the di-vine centre’ and have become aware ofthe hopelessness resulting from this loss, simultaneously behold the macrocosmand the microcosm, and for the firsttime, glimpse a light beyond the grief, des-pair and hopelessness. We glimpse an infi-nitely subtle, yet clear and unassailablelight. It is the light of the eternal spirit. Ittouches our deepest nucleus, which hasbeen lying hidden within us as a lost, butprecious pearl for so long.

And we have become aware that this isthe one linkwithGod, the eternal covenantof the human child with the divine spirit.

All distress, agony, fear, darkness anddesolation, all thorns of the dense hedgearound the dilapidated palace yield, dis-solve, melt and disappear in the light ofthe spiritual sun. Nothing can withstandthis light. This is the reason that we canacknowledge that all appearances, fear, doubts and death are unreal in a holy uni-verse. Thus, it can happen that true lifeopens forth in the heart as an eternalspring. This breath of love is the ‘kiss oflife’ of the spiritual king ^ the universalChrist ^ who awakens the soul.

What matters is inner change

The first careful attempts are takingshape, certainly in Europe with its in-creasingly closer community of nations. Thus, the initial contours of a new ensoul-ment that concentrates on a spirituallyunderstood Christ, are appearing inmany places. Ever more people will dem-onstrate this ensoulment in the first stagesof the Age of Aquarius,. Change is in the

air. Many sensitive people have been wait-ing a long time for the new possibilitiesnow presenting themselves. In this con-text, it is irrelevant as to whether theyeven know the word ‘Christ’. What mat-ters is a new soul quality; this is the deci-sive factor. It is the awakening of the innerhuman being that has been predicted byteachers, seers and prophets for thou-sands of years. It is the result of countlesslife experiences of those who have beenstriving for a Christian experience, withtheir soul and their whole consciousnessfocused on the inner requirements.

What does this awakeningmean to us?Howcanweperceive it?What are its char-acteristics? What kind of process of be-coming conscious is it?

The possibilities of the divine spirit areunlimited. In the process of becomingconscious, an abundance of possibilitiesand forces can be manifested, just as theexuberant, abundant wealth of flowerscan blossom in a spring meadow. Every

awakening human child carries a three-fold seal, the seal of the spiritual law: thetrinity of light, love and life in heart, headand hands. This trinity is the primordialspiritual formula for freedom, and it isfound wherever freedom rules.

As soon as we understand that this for-mula is the highest human task and des-tiny, andwebegin to strive and act accord-ing to it,we approach the cosmic aspect oftheChrist. Then our thinking, feeling andacting are no longer powerlessly at themercy of the vagaries of external circum-stances, or the blows of fate. No, thinking, feeling and acting concentrate around therediscovered eternal centre, a central, uni-versal, spiritual power, which is light, loveand life.

The pure stimulus

As long as people remain under thespell of their old patterns of feeling, think-ing and acting, due to their blood state,

karma and external influences and cir-cumstances, this spiritual power will notcome any closer. Many people’s emo-tional nucleus has been turned into afrightened, unbalanced emotional lifethat lacks a pure, spiritual stimulus. When this is the case, our thinking canonly be confused and I-centred. And inour society, without a pure stimulus ema-nating from a sincere unity of the heartand head, this inevitably leads to a succes-sion of absurd actions and automatic reac-tions.

A ray of light from the eternal

being

Every humanbeing, who still has at hisdisposal the last radiant spark in his heart,is experiencing the influence of the spiri-tual sun of the current time period and isable to wake up. The rigid thinking, feel-ing and acting is broken up and old me-chanisms are affected from within. Then,in this ‘ruin’, a radiant new shoot can ger-minate.The new thinking, feeling and act-ing will, from then on, be concentratedaround, and vivified by, the eternal, ra-diating nucleus. Heart, head and hands

will then be liberated from confusion, and the human being will be able to de-velop towards his true destiny ^ light, love and life.

The soul is touched by a ray of lightfrom the eternal being right through itssuffering. And it is only in this light, thatthe soul can gain insight into the limitedusefulness of its bipolar thinking, the ab-surdity and fragmentationof the old I, andthe deep chasm that separates it from lifein the sprit. And the human being will re-cognise the miracle of this mercy, and beable to surrender his very soul to this rayof light from eternity. For it is in this verysurrender, in this ascent into the spirituallight, that the divine gift of freedom willcome over him. From then on, histhoughts and feelings will be linked withthe nucleus of eternal being, the benefi-cent principle that we call ‘the Christ’.Everything wilful, blind and powerless, which was at the mercy of the arbitrari-ness of matter, will yield. In the surrenderto the universal spirit nucleus a totallynew soul is vivified, right through the pro-cess of ‘dying’, right through the extinc-tion of egocentric life. From then on, ourintellect, emotional life and actions will

32

also be purified, because the ceaseless sur-render to the spirit of the pure life is alwaysaccompanied by purification, by becom-ing simple and clear. The old conscious-ness progressively disappears and istaken up into a new spirit-soul conscious-ness, and nothing of it will ever be foundagain. A new human being is bornthrough the vivifying powers of the spirit.

Grail bearer

This is a total renewal. We might askwhether a human being notices thischange. Certainly, because he experiencesthis renewal as inwardly being youngagain. The impulses and suggestions fromanother dimension, from another field ofconsciousness, are now projected intothinking, feeling and acting faculties thatare balanced and tranquil.

And the person’s whole state of beingrises into a higher vibration that is insubtle harmony and attuned to the univer-sal laws of the Christ: light, love, and life. The immortal consciousness structuresand light creations can continue to beformed. And the old human being be-comes a ‘grail bearer’, in which the spiri-

tual sun is reflected. He is: the comingnew man.

The rose of the cosmic light

When Dante writes about the rose ofthe cosmic light in his ‘Divina Comme-dia’, he envisions the concentric all-mani-festation with its immeasurable wealth oflight. He creates a representation of themacrocosmic, cosmic and microcosmicsolar life in the Spirit, as a pure idea, justas the earthly human being perceives itwith his new soul consciousness. He callsthismighty image the ‘grail’.He strives forthis pure, divine idea, and his conscious-ness is completely assimilated by its love, even though it takes thousands of years. Then, like Jesus, he is able to testify fromhis inner, central rose of Light: ‘I am onewith you, Father; thanks be to you for thismercy.’

400 years of the Rosycross

The language of Aquarius

In all its statements, the modern Rosy-cross points to the demand made of hu-man beings at the dawn of the Age ofAquarius. The familiar image of theman emptying a pitcher of water ^ theWaterbearer ^ has, since ancient times, been used as a symbol of the livingwater, the new energy being poured outinto the atmosphere. This living waterstimulates a process of change and re-newal. Since the 17 th-century Rosicru-cians went public, each period has theappropriate priorities placed at the out-set of this process.

Aquarius is the spirit that makes every-thing transparent. The content of old va-lues is examined. There is an urge for lib-

eration from conservative structures. Thepitcher is charged with a dynamic energyintended for an inner revolution. Thispower of manifestation, which is pouredout over everyone, always has an effect, and we must make a choice.

Aquarius guarantees free choice. Wecannot do anything but react, that is notfree. But we can choose how to do it. Re-acting with the I results in an expansion ofthe ego. We can see how this leads to nar-cissism, hedonism and an unrelentingdrive for consumption.

If we listen to the calling voice of thespiritual essence, we will walk the path ofthe rose and the cross. In both cases, allthe old standards and values become un-settled. But while the I-being turns toever lower ‘liberties’, his brother or sistermakes another choice and is striving for ahigher level of existence. Aquarius then in-spires an awareness of the Other, andwhen this happens, higher ideals likebrotherhood, social justice, solidarity, rea-sonableness, understanding and publicspirit, which are always associated withAquarius, take on a totally different per-spective.

As the sign of Aquarius is controlledby the spirit of freedom, the I-conscious-ness might at any moment run away withthese ideals. Moreover, such ideals can be-come fixed in systems, dogmas, totalitar-ian structures and imposed new standardsand values. Seen astrologically, this re-newal then falls back to Saturnian values;it crystallises in fixed structures andcomes to nothing.

Although,Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are now known, and their orbits described, it appears that only a very feware able to read and understand the Book of Nature, eventhough, in truth, it lies open for all to see. Uranus, Neptuneand Pluto, those three divine forces, are not simply loftyideas, to which mankind will gradually be raised, butpowerful laws, fundamental principles, which will befulfilled, which will break right through what isdegenerate, barbarian and criminal so that, as theConfessio says: ‘...as soon as the world has slept off thestupor of its cup filled with poisons and intoxicants, andmerrily and joyfully, with open heart, bare head, andunshod feet, steps forth early in the morning to meet therising sun.’J van Rijckenborgh,The Confession of the Brotherhood of theRosycross, p.14. Rozekruis Pers, Haarlem,TheNetherlands, 1989 .

What is the freedom of the

Waterbearer?

From the perspective of the I, freedomentails uncertainty and chaos in the senseof a lackoforder. But fromthe perspectiveof renewal, freedom is connected withcreativity and responsibility. Aquarius isconnected with the planetUranus, and inGreek mythology, the god Uranus is re-presented as freedom and chaos. The newhuman being needs this combination offreedom, creativity and responsibility, tobe able to be autonomous and self-realis-

ing. What matters is a completely new re-sponsibility that can only be realised inabsolute freedom, just like the pilgrim inFlammarion’s well-known illustration isable to break through the limits of the ex-isting cosmos and perceive a new one.

If the human being does not go thispath, if he clings to old patterns and incli-nations, the fiery power of Aquarius willconstantly cause crises. He may then tryto shield himself from this uncertaintyby falling back on standards and valuesthat are no longer valid, but which canprotect him from slipping further down.

35

Observed fromthe earth, acomet in the skyoffers afascinating sight.

Then he locks the door for which the dy-namism of Aquarius is intended, the doorto renewal,. This development will thenhave to be passed through at a later stage.Whoever seeks negative freedom, unlim-ited freedom for the I, will notice thatthis only gives rise to the greatest dangerfor the ego. In his craving for stimuli, the I-humanbeing becomes a danger to himselfand his surroundings. The Aquarian en-ergy drives us to a renewal that ultimatelydemands the total dissociation from theculture of the I.

In the 1960 ’s, the Aquarian radiationwas expressed in revolutionary move-ments and ideals. They pounded againstthe limits of the existing standards and va-lues and destroyed them. There was a cryfor peace, love and solidarity. The tensionin the atmosphere was critical and dis-charged into the atmosphere like a flashof lightning. As an air sign, the domain ofAquarius is the atmosphere.

The Spiritual School of the GoldenRosycross organised five powerful Aqua-rian Conferences in different places inEuropebetween 1963 and 1967.These spe-cial conferences emphasised that beingaware of the need for a revolution is thecondition for true human genesis, whollyin the spirit of The Alchemical Wedding ofChristian Rosycross, a manuscript fromthe 17 th-century Rosicrucians. In thisprofound short story, Christian Rosy-cross is the prototype of the new humanbeing, the Aquarian human being.

Nowadays, it is generally acknowl-edged that the revolutionary changes, in-itiated in the second half of the last cen-tury, have been decisive for today’s so-ciety. Today’s politicians ascribe the cur-rent upheaval, lawlessness and amoralitydirectly to these changes, primarily tothe tendency toward individual freedom. But this impulse did not concern politics:

it was a pure consciousness impulse, which developed the flavour of hedonismand egotism during the so-called I-periodof the 1980 ’s. The striving for solidarity, adopted by politics, was a positive resultof this impulse.

We can see the influences of the Aqua-rian impulse on society. Yet, humanbeings often react unconsciously, superfi-cially. And this is logical, as the impulse isnot intended to be ‘cosmetic’, but to beprofound, for the inner human being, and hence for the microcosm. If we try toimplement these values outwardly, with-out any inner change, the laws of naturewill come into effect ensuring that allworldly values ultimately turn into theiropposite. The ruin of what is best thenproduces the worst: lawlessness andamorality; the lowest form of violence, such as suicide commandoes and usingchildren as hostage.

This is counterbalanced by improve-ments like the unmasking of many pre-tences: the human being is not good bynature, as has been believed for quite along time, nor is he bad. Good and evilare aspects of the human being. There aremany people who are striving for the highAquarian ideals in their own lives. It issaid that the Aquarian influence, a periodof approximately 2160 years, heralds atime of brotherhood, freedom, harmony, mutual understanding, unselfishness andcreativity. Whoever looks around him, will not see much of this as yet, but gradu-ally all illusions will be unmasked. In theend, the truth catches up with all the lies, and how many scandals and secrets havenot already been uncovered?

What is the significance of 400 yearsof the Rosycross in the light of Aquarius? At the beginning of the 17 th century, theBrotherhood of the Rosycross went pub-lic in Europe with manifestoes and pro-

36

clamations. The astronomer/astrologerKepler had discovered a supernova in theconstellations of Serpentarius and Cy-gnus, and the Rosicrucians consideredthis to be a sign of ‘God’s Counsel’, asthey mentioned in the Confessio (1615). Itwas an impulse to renewal, manifested inthe sky, that would affect both the worldand our small world, the microcosm.

Guided by Reason

During the same period, possibilitiesfor an inner renewal and for the renewalof the general spiritual climate in Europewere released. The Brotherhood of theRosycross advanced the possibilities forrenewal despite the inherent risk of doingso. They did this, because in their opinionit was necessary for the further develop-ment of humanity and human culture ona purely Christian basis. The possibilitiespresented themselves. At the time, the cir-cumstances in Europe were such that the

risk of chaos remained limited. The ten-dency to order was strong in those daysand formed a solid bedrock for the streamof living water. A new impulse can de-velop in any direction, but if it is receivedby conscious souls, it will form a strongbedrock to lead the stream in the right di-rection.

European culture had also reached alevel at which it was able to assimilate theuniversal insights. People were guided bythe awakening Reason, expressed by thephilosopher Bruno, a precursor of Spi-noza and Descartes. If this impulse hadnot been received, both the human andcultural developments would have be-come stuck in an adolescent phase. Eur-ope would not have reached maturity.

The formation of a new human beingwith true spiritual faculties and the in-spirationofa culture withuniversal valueshad become necessary. The promise offreedom and the promise of creation, which the Bible heralded, so full of hope,

37

would be fulfilled. So the appearance of anew light in the constellations of Serpen-tarius and Cygnus not only proclaimedthis renewal in Europe, but at the sametime introduced the signature of theAquarian human being: Christian Rosy-cross.He is the humanbeing who is stand-ing in a dynamic process of change. Aqua-rius makes the manas possible, the Spirit-Soul human being with the higher think-ing faculty, the androgyne, true man.Characteristics like unselfishness, solidar-ity, friendship, reasonableness, integrity, openness and creativity will begin to de-velop on a new basis. But the most impor-tant aspect of the process of new humangenesis is the birth of a new soul: an en-tirely new directedness. It is the founda-tion for the alchemical wedding, thesynthesis of the Spirit and the soul, fromwhich a new body can arise.

Three significant phases since 1604

This element, which remained under-exposed or was even absent in Europeanculture until then, is now highly relevantfor all of us. The development of a highertype of human being is not an automaticaspect of a culture, but a dynamic processof becoming conscious; it is not an evolu-tion led by secular or church authorities, but a revolution in our own microcosm:a step toward another starting point.

This new synthesis cannot take placeon the basis of reward or punishment, but only on the basis of a positive decisiontoworkon true enlightenment, because ofa deeply felt invitation to the royal wed-ding, and without knowing in advancewhere this process will ultimately lead to.This uncertainty and tension belong tothe process of growth to the maturity ofthe soul.

Aquarius signifies a great new possibi-lity for the spiritual seeker. Not until now,

has the seeker been able to work on him-self in a meaningful way, as the Pisceaninfluence wanes, and then only if he hasrealised the requirements of the Age ofPisces, as it offers the right starting point.A period of cleansing and purification ofthe heart precedes this new phase, duringwhich he learns to listen humbly to thehigher reason.

This first renewing impulse of the se-venteenth century came to a dead enddur-ing the bloody religious wars inGermany, between Protestants and Roman Catho-lics (the ThirtyYears’ War). Only after acomprehensiveEuropean peace, signed inMu« nster in 1648,was it possible to pick upthe impulse again. The French Revolu-tion, which aroused Europe in 1789 withits declaration of human rights and theideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, formed an important transition in thiscontext: it was the first clear foreshadow-ing of the influence of Aquarius. It is nocoincidence that Uranus, the planet thatcontrols the sign of Aquarius, was discov-ered in 1781. This foreshadowed influenceis alsomarked withMozart’s 1791 compo-sition Die Zauberflo« te (The Magic Flute),in which the process of the AlchemicalWedding of Christian Rosycross is set tomusic. Mozart considered the dawn of theAge of Aquarius to be a sunrise: symbo-lism, magic and spirit-soul consciousnessmusically represent a wedding feast thathas lost none of its power of expressionto this day.

During the 18 th century, many im-pulses stimulated alchemical self-realisa-tion, through freemasonry, among otherthings. But counterforces also arose, suchas the bloodbath that accompanied theFrench Revolution, which tainted andbartered away the Aquarian values of lib-erty, equality and fraternity.

The period between 1787 and 1966

was marked by numerous revolutions

38

and renewals, which began with highideals, but ended in totalitarian systemsthat claimed countless victims.

However, there were also joyful Aqua-rian renewals. On the spiritual plane forinstance, theosophy developed with themotto ‘there is no religion higher thanthe truth’, a true Aquarian motto. Also,Max Heindel’s movement, the Rosicru-cian Fellowship, at the beginning of the20 th century, had, as its motto: ‘A clearintellect, a loving heart, a healthy body’.

In the last phase of the Age of Pisces ^during which the Aquarius energy be-comes noticeable ^ there is a strong focuson the truth again. Seen astrosophically, the Age of Pisces has entered its lastphase, the phase of the Fishes, the TwoFishes. Pisces (Fishes) is controlled bythe mystery planet Neptune, which J vanRijckenborgh called the renewer of thehead sanctuary.

The truth that becomes visible by un-masking is often not a truth that humanbeings appreciate. What is uncoveredconfronts, and it brings our crisis of con-sciousness fully to light.

The truth is that the world cannot inany way be made acceptable in the lightof eternity, and that untruthfulness andhypocrisy rule supreme. We often takepart in it whether from economicmotivesor for the ‘sake of peace’. This ‘peace’ cor-responds exactly with the swooning con-text of ‘our good Lord’ in which the Sonof God is often placed: it is appearancesand untruthful.

The glow of the monad

Although we know that I-culture is adead end,we often take part in it. Anotherway of thinking becomes then impossible. We learn to live with the ‘obesity’ of the I.We suppress the idea of the need for spiri-tual change. We shrink from the change itrequires and think that there is an immea-surable distance between us and the truehuman being. The I has taken us prisoner.

Long before the 1960 ’s, yet still in theAquarian phase of the Age of the Fishes, these wise words resounded: the develop-ment of the I, the nature ego, should be re-placed by the development of the monad.

39

Impression of theplanet Pluto.

Themonad is amuch deeper nucleus thanour ego and is not open to the temptationsthat bind us to matter, habits and addic-tions. The monad corresponds with theoriginal field, with theLove that is perfect. This is not the love we know. Love, whichis the spirit of freedom, cannot be dealtwith by our I. The love emanating fromthe I is of a much lower vibration. TheLove that the Letter to the Corinthiansspeaks of, is of a different realm, and onlythe monad has affinity with it and, via it,can begin to ‘radiate’.

The nucleus radiation of the monadenvelops its surroundings ^ that is us ^with anunearthly glow.Through it,we ex-perience an alienation from this worldand we feel like strangers here.

This spirit-spark, which experiencesperfect love and freedom, drives thehuman being to intense activity. The dri-ven human being knows that this energyis not intended to be enlightening for ashort while, but that it imposes an obliga-tion. The spirit of love demands that theperson give and spread the new energy.Through this, the inner construction con-tinues. In this way, the human being isconfronted with the wisdom of Hermes:receiving everything, relinquishing every-thing and in this way renewing every-thing.

If the striving person falls back intothe actions of the I, he will arrive in noman’s land. The limits have been wipedout, and he no longer has anything tohold on to. If he tries to revivify the oldvalues in a forced way, he gradually lapsesinto the realm of fundamentalism. Then acultural degeneration begins and the at-tendant phenomena of fear, suppressionand terror are profoundly upsetting andfar from uplifting.

The Aquarian impulse is not free fromobligation. What matters in the sphere ofAquarius is to form such a strong mag-netic system or power field that it be-

comes unassailable from the inevitable de-generation of cultures in the world. TheAquarian idea of ‘brotherhood’ plays adecisive role in this. Aquarius demandsthe courage to engage in the groupprocess^ but now on a new level, on the level ofthe soul. The requirement is absolute, butcan be realised in the spirit of perfect loveand freedom. The power of the wholegroup will benefit all of its members, ac-cording to the adage: liberty, equalityand fraternity. The true human being hasthen risen from the earth. He is an inhabi-tant of the original solar body, the cosmos.
