I’m writing this quite early in the morning. No I’m not an insomniac, well not yet anyway, just an idiot (albeit a multitasking one). Well, who else would try to juggle finishing a magazine 10 days early with buying a house and renting out another before embarking on an overseas trip (one that required getting a new passport issued in my married name, including four separate attempts at the photo – apparently my head was too small)? Did I mention I haven’t packed yet

and we go at 6am tomorrow? But it will be worth it when we get there. We’re off to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup – it’s been a dream of my husband’s for quite some time and he’s invested in some gold-coloured wigs, so we’re sure to stand out (and hopefully keep our heads warm – with zero degree minimums I’ll try anything!). It’s also been a long-held dream of mine to drink the Marlborough wine region dry (responsibly of course), which I plan to do with gusto. I do love travelling and – in my late 20s – I’m glad to say it’s something we can do with relative ease as we’re yet to become parents. Actually, there are lots of things I love about my current age (such as feeling fit and healthy; beginning to forgive myself for not being perfect and having no interest in baking; and still fearing public speaking, but no longer as much as death itself), and are there many more things I’m looking forward to as the years move on. I hope you’re inspired by our story on pages 21 - 25, in which five local ladies reveal why they love their age. We commend these beautiful and strong

women for their help with this story – it’s not easy to just throw your age out there, but in doing so, I hope it’s made the point that you’re only as old as you feel and it’s certainly better than the alternative. Speaking of which, there were lots of laughs when Jayne Finlay and Jennie Gibson came in for the shoot for our story to mark Breast Cancer Awareness month. These close mates have both been faced with their own mortality, but it’s taught them to live in the now and not beat around the bush, plus drawn them to help other women who are battling cancer and need a dose of positivity. It can be hard to know what to say when a friend, colleague or acquaintance tells you they are sick, and the girls offer a special insight (page 50). Plus don’t miss our story on the gorgeous King twins and the man of many talents – Boori Monty Pryor. We also put the spotlight on new homes this month in our special feature. Enough to keep you busy? We hope so! Until next month, Carly Lubicz x

Every year DUO Magazine holds a

competition where 12 local girls are

chosen to grace the magazine’s cover

for a month of the year. In October we

introduce you to:

MELISSA MALONEPursuing a modelling career in her

spare time, 25-year-old Melissa

also works at Citisolar as a sales

supervisor. The mother of a six-year-

old boy is also doing a make-up

course and ultimately plans to develop

her modelling career further south. In

her spare time she loves to catch-up

with friends and family and spend time

outdoors at the beach.

HAIRCAPELLI HAIR Melissa’s hair was gently styled into

large curls using the new Cloud Nine

wand and set into place with L’Oréal

Professionnel Pli Thermo-Fixing Spray.

Once set, we then used a soft bristle

brush through the curls to create lots

of flowing volume. To give Melissa’s

hair a beautiful and glossy finish, we

used Elixir Ultime by Kérastase.

MAKE-UPCAPELLI HAIR To complement Melissa’s gorgeous

natural skin tone, we used the Look 4

in Napoleon Perdis Stick Foundation

and Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation

for a flawless finish. We kept her eyes

minimal using subtle suede and ivory

tones with a hint of shimmer. Melissa’s

lips were turned soft lilac using Mauve

Minx Lip Liner with Devine Goddess

Lipstick in Athena. Individual lashes

were applied to enhance the look.

If you’re interested in an in-depth astrology profile prepared by Tanya Obreza, visit www.tanyaobreza.com.

Romance makes its mark in a number of ways this month. Some fall head over heels. Others come to a confronting watershed. Either way, Capricorn hearts beat with a new intensity. Singles have their flings, but also consider commitment. Couples are more willing to offer mutual support. But it’s late October that offers the finest carnal delights.

Capricorn 23 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

Many facets of our lives are subject to change, and this month it’s relationships. This kind of repair work will need your commitment, personally and financially. But progress in any area is seldom easy without some patience and perhaps, much compromise. Besides, there’s a special kind of wealth also to be found in genuine love and friendship.

Aries21ST MARCH – 20TH APRIL

Professional interests take a back seat along with discarded clothing and a glow of sensual satisfaction. Prepare to redefine your erotic boundaries. Delighted partners will find you bolder in and out of the bedroom. Singles throw caution to the wind. Clandestine affairs, however, could be uncovered, leaving you exposed and impossibly embarrassed.

Taurus21ST APRIL – 20TH MAY

October’s a grinder of a month when it comes to getting the work done. It’s just a case of powering into top gear and crashing through any self-doubts. Both your work and social diaries are loaded to the hilt. Blame it on an immodest Mars, hurling you into the spotlight. There you’ll be - the centre of attention, and loving it.

Virgo 23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

While others map out a clear plan for the coming month, Pisceans mull over the past. Recently, relationships or career have suffered a reality check. Seeing your inner strength put on the rack can be a queasy experience, but there are always lessons to be learned. However, what you sacrificed in the past is now returned tenfold.

Pisces 19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

Delve deep into your heart and question your priorities. The drastic changes taking place now may drain both confidence and finances. But if you follow your instincts then no matter which direction you choose to travel, you’ll be back on top form before you know it. Be ready to carve an exciting new niche.

Gemini21ST MAY – 21ST JUNE

You’ve set yourself some pretty high expectations, and not all of them can be met. But if you’re feeling frustrated, don’t resort to anger. Likewise, your advice shouldn’t be pitched as caustic criticism. Take it easy on everyone, including yourself. Crush the wrong set of toes, and offended dance partners may decide to call a separate tune.

Sagittarius 22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Want your own personal profile?

There are many soul snipers out there who will gun down anything vaguely heartfelt. But it’s time to reclaim your power. This month’s

focus shifts to what you truly want out of life, not what others expect from you. And if you’re able, surround yourself with a few luxuries. Be extravagant. You deserve the very best, and so do friends and family.

What does this month have in store for you? Astrologer Tanya Obreza has these predictions...

This month has a special mission: to show just how brave and capable you really are. While it’s often sensible to sit and sort things out before taking action, there aren’t too many reasons for caution at present. Even if there were, you’re fuelled with way too much enthusiasm to be held back. Give the world your best shot.

Cancer22ND JUNE – 22ND JULY

Leos are famous for their fiercely stubborn streak. And as compromise doesn’t seem your top priority at the moment, expect some heated discussions. You’ve had a taste of freedom and want more. Though the planets counsel a degree of care, you want to throw caution to the wind. Just as well your cash supply looks plentiful - even if it is borrowed.

Leo23RD JULY – 22ND AUGUST

With another birthday cycle drawing to a close, Scorpios are granted the right for personal review. Rather than slog on, you’re more likely to pore over past mistakes. Try to maintain objectivity. With hindsight, so-called ‘mistakes’ can be seen as learning curves. This is a chance to put old demons to rest.

Scorpio23RD OCTOBER – 21ST NOVEMBER

The cosmos looks set to spark some fiery debates this month. Little can be left to chance, with family matters and cash flow being the most contentious issues. It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to spend, save or earn - money becomes a source of conflict or uncertainty. As a result, you have to think on your feet as each new twist unfolds.

KIRSTY TUCKER

I’m in the third year of my exercise physiology degree at James Cook University and I’m loving the fact that I’m meeting so many new people… I’ve made some really good girlfriends who I see all day, every day. Most of us are single at this age and I love the freedom of going out for dinner with the girls – half the time we end up on Flinders Street! I’ve just turned 21 and if I compare myself to my teenage years, I’m definitely becoming more self-assured about who I am, and not trying to be like everyone else. You realise that you’re not going to keep in contact with everyone you knew at 16, but it’s OK because you make new friends instead. At this age, you become a lot more independent from your family: although I’m still at home while I’m studying, I’ve noticed my parents seem to respect me a lot more and treat me like an adult now. I’m realising there are so many options and opportunities when it comes to what I want to do with my life – choosing something to do at uni was hard enough, but there’s so much more. I really want to travel for a while in the near future – I’ve always been drawn to Europe – but there might be a bit more study before that as I’m considering doing my Masters in Physiotherapy Studies just to strengthen my qualifications. I really want to get out and see things, though, before I get too settled in a career or job that I don’t want to leave. A lot of people put things off until they’re in a more financial place, but I think this is the age that if you want to do something, just do it – make the most of every moment.

When I was in my 20s I’d always wonder what I’d be like in my 30s and 40s, but could never actually imagine being there. Now at 39, I don’t think of myself as that age and I definitely don’t feel it until I look in the mirror and see a few more lines! I’ve learnt you need to work a little bit harder in your 30s to stay fit – in my 20s I was all about working out to look good, but now it’s to look good and feel great. I’m pleased to say that I’m at the stage of my life now where I’m comfortable with who I am – I don’t need to pretend to be someone who I’m not; I simply enjoy being me. I have a very close family – a 21-year-old and 15-year-old son, a 13-year-old daughter and my soon-to-be-husband Rick – we all love hanging out together. Rick and I met more than five years ago and became very good friends. He proposed to me at a Jack Johnson concert in a way that I just couldn’t say no! We are a very active family and love our football – tipping is big in our household and the competition is stiff. We love our food as well, and all enjoy cooking. Thursday night tradition is to take it in turns to cook a three-course meal. Sometimes we’re eating

dessert at midnight, but Rick and I have a lot of fun watching the kids and enjoying a glass of wine or two – it’s all about equipping them with those life skills for when they leave home. Starting my family young did mean making a few sacrifices in life, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I’m so grateful for our family and I’m loving watching the children grow into adults and progress in their own lives. I now have more time to pursue my professional career and I’m currently working on a new real estate-focused business concept, which I’m extremely excited about. Life is certainly sweet!

I’M NOT; I SIMPLY ENJOY BEING ME.”

LOUISE LODGE

At the age of 46 I think I’m stronger than I’ve ever been in my body and I’m a lot more mentally tough. In my early 30s I was carrying a lot more weight after having our second child, and I went through a period of postnatal depression. I lacked motivation, self-esteem and energy and generally felt that I had no style or direction. I decided to do something about it by changing my eating habits and getting back into netball – it was a sport I’d played when I was younger and really enjoyed. I also joined the gym and things just spiralled up from there – I lost around 40kg and started weight loss classes in Darwin that incorporated exercise, which lead to a career in the fitness industry. I love inspiring others now and teaching them how to be happy and healthy. Age has never really been something I’ve given much consideration to

because I always thought of it as an evolution – as you learn more you feel happier with who you are and stronger in yourself. Unfortunately, you are judged by your age and – I must admit – it annoys me when you have to tick a box for your ‘age category’ and it’s getting further and further down the line! But you really just have to live, be happy and appreciate every day. I’m loving the fact that my husband Kym and I are involved with my 13-year-old’s AFL team, where my 16-year-old is also the runner; and I love watching my 10-year-old daughter playing netball. I think I get a lot of strength from my Mum – she’s in her mid 70s and walks around 10km every day. Actually, as I move towards my 50s I can see myself becoming more like her (don’t tell my husband!) – I catch myself saying and doing things I swore I never would!

CANDIA BRUCE

It’s a really exciting time for me at the moment. After 56 years I’ve learnt not to take life too seriously. After all, the other option to ageing isn’t good! I’m now firmly engrossed with my third career: running my own business in organisational systems and conflict management after going back to uni in my late 40s. I’m fortunate to have so many positive experiences in my past working life as a registered nurse and as a relationship counsellor and mediator to look back on, which have taught me valuable lessons in compassion and humanity, and even organisational skills that I need today. I have a certain confidence that is blossoming and I think part of that comes with learning to trust myself. Plus in business, I’m finding being an older woman is more of an advantage with the respect you get for professional experience. I’m learning new things every day and continually engage in education, courses, conferences – both local and overseas – and it’s great because now I see all the challenges of understanding new concepts as far less daunting as I would have in my 20s, 30s and 40s. My husband and I don’t have children, so a lot of our time is focused on our careers or catching-up with my parents (when they have time!) who are both in great health. Our other focus is looking after our two dogs – a rough-haired Jack Russell and a German Shepherd cross who are both 14. They don’t ask for a lot and give an extraordinary amount! I feel privileged that we have the freedom to travel for work – last year we went to China, and the previous year to Los Angeles for a NeuroLeadership conference, which was fascinating. Learning for me has become an adventure, not something that stresses me. People are always asking me when I’ll retire, but I always think ‘why?’ – I’m having the time of my life!

BLOSSOMING ANDPART OF THAT COMES WITH LEARNING TO

TRUST MYSELF.”

life

ALISON FERRY

At the moment life is very much about family, friends and taking more time out to travel to adventurous places that we never would have dreamed of taking our children. My husband and I just got back from Sri Lanka; we’ve done lots of safaris to Africa and we recently tripped around the islands north of Vanuatu, visiting villages to see how people live. I’m retired and, while Richard is still working, he now has the freedom to take time off when he pleases, which is wonderful. We are lucky to have both of our children, who are now in their thirties, living close by, which means I get to see a lot of my beautiful granddaughter. She’s one and such a sweet little thing and it’s fantastic to be able to watch her constantly develop, see the milestones and share stories with my son about the funny things he was doing at her age. When I had my children there wasn’t the pressure that exists today for young people to have it all at once and know everything – I think it’s huge and I’m so glad I’m not starting out again. The benefit of being in my mid 60s is the question of wisdom and mind over matter – if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter! You never think of yourself as being old – I have friends in their 40s and 70s – it’s a state-of-mind and you need to be positive and grow old gracefully, rather than being upset about ageing. I’ve got more time to do what I want and help other people, whether it’s through voluntary work, or just being there for friends and family who call asking for advice, which I now feel more qualified to give! Life throws out lots of challenges and obstacles and you just meet them head-on, but when you’re younger things are more overwhelming. You soon learn that there’s nothing you can’t deal with, no matter how

unsurmountable it seems at the time, and those experiences make you who you are.I feel very blessed: When you reach this age if you’re fortunate to have good health,as we do, you have more energy, more time to keep fit and more time to spend with

friends, children and grandchildren. The most important thing is family I think.

“THE BENEFIT OF BEING IN MY MID 60S IS THE QUESTION OF WISDOM AND MIND OVER MATTER – IF YOU DON’T MIND, IT DOESN’T MATTER!.”

IS AN AMAZING ENTREPRENEUR AND

A TALENTED BUSINESS WOMAN AND I LEARNED

A GREAT DEAL FROM WORKING WITH HER.”

Page 31: DUO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2011

IN A PREVIOUS LIFE YOU WERE A FREELANCE DESIGNER. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? Freelancing was a chapter I fell into after leaving Country Road [where she was a design manager for knitwear]. I enjoyed the challenges this style of working brought with it. It increased my ability to be versatile, made me think laterally about different products and businesses, and required a high level of organisation. It also meant getting my head around invoicing and MYOB – not the most creative of tasks, but essential skills that I’m pleased to have acquired! I loved the overall experience, however, I equated freelancing to being single – fun for a chapter, but at some stage you want to fall in love again and be in a monogamous relationship, which is what working with one company brings!

LATER, WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ALONGSIDE MIMCO FOUNDER AMANDA BRISKIN? Energetic, challenging and brilliant! Amanda is an amazing entrepreneur and a talented business woman and I learned a great deal from working with her. We shared a lot of laughs, some tears and many gratifying wins. I have so many fond memories of this time and am very grateful to have had these moments in my career.

IN FIVE YEARS, YOU’VE GONE ON TO BE THE CREATIVE AND COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR AT MIMCO. DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE PINCHING YOURSELF? I’ve evolved naturally with the brand, so my progression from freelance to managing the design team to being in the current role of heading up the business has all happened slowly and has felt appropriate as it’s come to pass. I feel blessed to be in a role at the helm of a brand that I love. However, I don’t tend to stop and think too often about how I got here. Rather my head is down and my primary focus daily is delivering success.

WHAT VARIED ASPECTS CAN YOUR ROLE ENTAIL? It’s a broad scope that covers aspects from creative to financial to retail operations to marketing direction. There is a lot of juggling and a need to compartmentalise, as well as constantly be projecting forward and thinking

about the ‘next’ thing. I’ve been fine-tuning my organisational skills since I was 10 and used to time myself making my bed in the morning, trying to get a better time each day, so I think I’m in the right role for multitasking! I’m aware this is odd, yes… [laughs]

WHAT WAS IT LIKE SEEING ALYSSA SUTHERLAND WEARING YOUR DESIGNS IN MIMCO’S LATEST CAMPAIGN? AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE AUSSIE BEAUTY? Alyssa is a chameleon. Her looks can be wildly different, which is part of her appeal. When we were reviewing the campaign photos after the first day of shooting, it struck me how truly perfect she was to play the role of our wilderness sprite. She looked as though she was borne out of the forest.

WHICH STYLE ICONS DO YOU THINK CONSISTENTLY GET IT RIGHT? [Former French Vogue editor-in-chief] Carine Roitfeld, [singer] Florence Welch, [Vogue Japan editor-at-large] Anna Dello Russo and [actress] Tilda Swinton – [all] strong, a bit crazy and unique!

YOU SPENT SOME TIME LIVING IN NEW YORK. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CITY? I was a kid when we lived there, and it was upstate NY, rather than the city. [But] it was a life-transforming experience for a shy child from the Melbourne suburbia! NYC is a favourite destination on my travels. I find the city exciting and inspiring, while also being a bit daunting – it’s big, bolshy and loud!

WHAT TREASURED ACCESSORIES WOULD YOU NEVER PART WITH? An acrylic cuff with a large green crystal spider on it from Mimco; a whole bunch of shoes that don’t get a lot of outings - but they’re not moving from my wardrobe - and my Dad’s watch.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVATE PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF WORK? Reading, watching movies, being in nature, and relaxing with my man and our cats!

YOUR GENES AND MY JEANS

t seems, well, natural, that when two people are formed from the same cells, they would share not only looks but also similar tendencies. Ignite the

nature versus nurture debate if you will, but there is something undeniably fascinating about twins. How two people can be so inextricably linked that the line where one ends and the other person begins is blurred. If it weren’t for 22-year-old identical twins Courtney and Miranda King having different hairstyles – both sport chic short blonde bobs, but Miranda carries a fringe – it would be troublesome for those who didn’t know the twins well enough to tell them apart. Especially when they finish each other’s sentences.“Growing up, we weren’t really like most identical twins you hear about,” reflects Courtney. “We never played tricks on people by pretending to be each other.” Shaking her head in time with her sister, Miranda adds, “Any confusion was always unintentional – people would meet one of us, then the other and think we were one rude person who didn’t remember them.”During the warm spring day DUO met the twins, a fly hovered between the two girls. At the exact moment Courtney lifted her right hand to swish away the fly, Miranda lifted her left and the pair waved their hands in unison. It was an absolute mirror image – a synchronised moment they couldn’t have choreographed any better if they tried. But Courtney insists their personalities are quite unique: “We do like the same things, and we have a similar style, but at the same time we are very different.”

“WE DO LIKE THE SAME THINGS,

AND WE HAVE A SIMILAR STYLE,

BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE ARE

VERY DIFFERENT.”

You would think that living, working and studying with the same person would drive you crazy, but Courtney and Miranda say they never get sick of each other, and even manage to share a car, a wardrobe, and write a fashion blog called The King Personal.“We spent our first six months studying accounting at uni,” tells Courtney, “and we absolutely hated it,” the twins say in unison. “It didn’t fit with us at all,” says Miranda, who switched her attention to pharmacy after her sister announced she would pursue the same career. The King sisters have now completed pharmacy courses at JCU, finishing their final exams last month. Miranda has accepted a position at Townsville Hospital and Courtney at North Ward Pharmacy, and while the girls seem both excited and disappointed to be working on opposite sides of the city, they are glad to be staying in Townsville.“We always had that big city dream, and we actually had jobs lined up in Brisbane,” explains Miranda. “But then I was offered a job at the hospital and thought, ‘You know, Townsville is a great place; I really like my life here’. And so, Courtney found a job locally, and we decided to stay.”Staying together is definitely preferable for the bubbly duet that relies on each other for balance. “I can’t really label what we share,” tells Miranda. “When Courtney’s down, I’m up, and when she’s up I’m down. So we motivate each other.”“We are the ultimate team,” tells Courtney. “And I feel like our lives are only starting now.”

If she’s not rounding-up volunteers and shopping for food to power them, she’s dropping off international music acts to the airport at 6am. Gloria Vass, 58, has

helped her entrepreneurial sons Mark, 24, and Karl, 31, since they first launched the Full Noise Festival in 2009 – the boys from the Burdekin growing frustrated that none of the country’s headline acts were venturing north of Brisbane. Now in its third year, Full Noise has become a Townsville institution, and in 2011 it will draw the likes of Grinspoon, Eskimo Joe, The Herd, Faker, tyDi, The Vines and Illy to the rugby grounds on Hugh Street for a day of rocking bands and top-notch DJs. Now in the final days of planning the mammoth event, Mark Vass reveals the success of the festival relies heavily on the support of volunteers – most of which are friends and family. “Someone’s tour manager said last year ‘I can’t believe how

You can see how much work is involved and how much pressure they’re under to make the day a success. I can also understand why people love going so much – there is so much hype in the lead-up and you

see people of all ages having a ball.” Gloria has met a large variety of people through Full Noise and, while she insists she’s no groupie, she has relished the opportunity to have a good chat to some of the bands when she does the early morning airport runs the next day. “A lot of them are so approachable and such lovely people,” she tells, naming Bluejuice and The Draft as particular favourites. She’s looking forward to the job again this year and Mark and Karl are extremely pleased with the line-up, with one of their key objectives being to lure bands that haven’t previously journeyed to the north. “It’s definitely become easier to attract bigger names as we’ve cemented the festival’s reputation and, gauging from this year’s line-up, people will walk away feeling satisfied – I can pretty much assure that,” Mark states.

It was 2001 and Jayne Finlay was well into chemotherapy treatment and would soon see both of her breasts removed. Not one to sit still, she was still working in real estate and – on this particular day – had just listed a unit in the Metro Quays building. Coming down in

the elevator after her appointment sporting a wig she frankly preferred to leave at home, in stepped Jennie Gibson – the manager of the building. Jennie had heard about Jayne in professional circles and introduced herself. Jayne learnt that Jennie knew all about chemo and radiation therapy after triumphing over a battle with bowel cancer. The girls decided then and there they should have lunch – an event that would thereby be known as ‘survivors’ lunches’. These affairs weren’t exclusive – the new friends would invite any woman they heard was fighting cancer to join them. The only condition was, and still is, that pity and negativity are left at the door. “If they want sympathy then don’t expect it – we’ll teach them to toughen up because laughter is the best medicine,” Jennie declares, fending off her

cancer again last year when it returned. “You choose not to be the victim because you need to be positive. When I meet someone who’s just been diagnosed with breast cancer I say, ‘You really must meet Jayne because she’s been there, had a double mastectomy and survived’. We used to have the survivors’ lunches every month, but now we tend to get together when we hear about a woman who needs our support.”Jayne says her friendship with Jennie and the other girls was hugely beneficial in getting her through the breast cancer treatment, especially at one point when she felt particularly miserable. The ladies admit that it can be hard for other friends to know what to say when they discover that a buddy is ill, but honesty and openness are the best policy. “A lot of people pretend it’s not happening or avoid you because they don’t know how to address it with you,” Jennie tells. “If you had a broken leg it would be, ‘How long have you got your cast on for?’, but because it’s cancer and your hair is falling out people feel awkward.” But they both concur the support of

good friends is invaluable, because it’s often much harder on the spouse or close family than the person who’s going through the cancer. “I’ve been the spouse of someone with cancer and had cancer myself and it’s way harder being the healthy one because you really feel their suffering and can’t fix it for them,” Jennie says. “I think it’s really important for anybody with cancer to surround themselves with positive people and that’s why sometimes friends or strangers are better because they’re once removed and families are sometimes too close.” Jayne chimes in: “Definitely, we could talk about things to each other that we wouldn’t have talked about with our spouses or close family.Another key to the friends’ survival has been goal setting so they’ve always got something to work towards. Whether it’s a girls’ weekend away in Mission Beach or Magnetic Island or trips overseas and swimming with sharks, they are constantly planning and embracing life. “We have definitely become more assertive and less likely to take any crap these days,” Jennie

laughs. Jayne adds: “I don’t think it’s until you face your own mortality that you survive. We’re just about to do our third overseas trip together: We went to Vietnam and did a cruise to Fiji and the Pacific and now we’re off to Egypt… so what if there’s a civil war going on there – we’ll still go. Would anyone dare to step in our way (laughs)?” With those punching gloves, we suspect not.

FREE check-upfor children age 3-6 years

VICTORIA CLARK | HYGIENIST | CASEY DENTISTS

THERE ARE WAYS TO ENSURE YOUR CHILD’S FIRST DENTAL EXPERIENCEDOES NOT LEAVE AN UNPLEASANT TASTE IN THE MOUTH.

PAVE THE WAY FOR HEALTHY TEETH FOR LIFE

You may have read last month’s article regarding children and dentistry, but I would like to expand on this issue. As the last article by Dr Mitchell Innes stated, the best time for a child to first visit the dentist is at age three. But often children are brought in for their first visit many years after this age, usually through the dental vans visiting the schools. Dental vans are an invaluable service for child dentistry, yet they often provide the child’s first experience in a dental chair. This can be a formidable experience if Mum or Dad isn’t there or if they have never had an experience like it.We at Casey Dentists would like to ensure that the transition to experiencing the dentist is a comfortable, positive, and – yes – even a fun encounter for your child. We have many adult patients with dental phobias and avoidance issues, and the majority of these feelings stem from past dental experiences that have not left happy, pleasant or positive memories. We believe the earlier the exposure and the more fun children have, the more lasting those positive memories will be.

We offer all current patients and new patients a complimentary appointment with the dental hygienist for a simple ride in the chair. The appointment will be negotiated and directed purely from your child’s reactions and we will make it as stress-free as possible. We make the event fun with funky sunglasses and by letting your child move the chair up and down. If they want to sit in the dental chair on their own then great, but they can sit on mum or dad’s lap also. The key is that we do not ask your child to do anything they don’t want to do. Usually in the first appointment we will ask them to open wide like a big crocodile and count their teeth. If they allow more, we will look further and check any cavities in their teeth and do a check on any teeth that may be erupting, including a tonsil check. We will ask about current diet habits and try our best to direct and educate parents, plus answer any questions or concerns, such as dummy, thumb sucking and issues with getting a child to adopt good brushing habits.

Our goal is for every child who comes to the practice to leave with a smile and feel proud that an experience that they were expecting to be scary turned out to be fun. They leave with a little ‘show bag’ and a story to tell to the other kids at daycare, school or family members. The younger the child develops a comfortable sense in the chair the better and healthier their lifelong relationship with the dentist will be.All you need to do is ring the practice and make a ‘ride in the chair’ appointment with our team and we will give your special little person (and the parents!) a no-stress, thrilling time, all at no cost to you. Start your youngster’s dental journey on a good note and it will pave the way for confident oral health experiences for life.

GET MORE CLARITY FROM YOUR TV

sound is set up to emphasis the bass frequencies. These are the pitches where all the music and the exciting background noises such as explosions, car engines and trains are. Most speech sounds sit in the mid and high frequency areas, which are not overly attenuated by the surround sound systems. There are several problems with this in relation to both the acoustics of the room and the general sound quality of the speech sounds. The frequencies that are most susceptible to echoing are the mid and high frequencies because high-pitched sounds rebound off objects, whereas low frequency sounds pass through objects. This means that when watching the television, the music and the background noises sound great because the low frequency signal reaching the ear is quite pure, but the mid and high-pitched speech sounds are very degraded because they have bounced off the floor, ceiling, walls and any other hard objects between the televisions and the ear. On top of this, the general mix of the surround sound makes the bass sounds louder than the speech. All this combines to

make it quite hard to hear speech even with normal hearing. Add a hearing loss on top of this and it may be almost impossible to watch a movie or drama. There are several things that can be done to help with television clarity. Firstly, changing the acoustics of the room will make a big difference. Having carpeted floors, soft furnishings and rugs on the wall soak up sound and stop the high frequencies from rebounding off them and degrading the signal. If you do have hard floors, lay a rug between the television set and the viewing chair to stop the echo off the floor. Finally, change the sound settings on the television or surround sound system. By reducing the bass and increasing the treble you will then decrease the background noise and music and increase the volume of speech.

The acoustics of a room are a very important factor in being able to hear the television clearly whether you have normal hearing, a hearing loss, or you’re wearing hearing devices. High ceilings, tiles, concrete or polished wooden floors create a very echoic environment. The more echo there is in a room the more degraded an acoustic signal becomes between the sound source (the television) and the ear. The extent that the sound signal can be degraded by an echoic room is such that you can have completely normal hearing and still have trouble understanding the speech on a television.Further exacerbating this is the default frequency attenuation of new LCD or plasma flat screen televisions and the additional surround sound systems through which we run the television audio. Whether you have a surround sound system or not, the default sound settings on new televisions are designed to provide a surround sound experience similar to a movie cinema. To do this, the frequency attenuation (or graphic equaliser as it’s commonly known) of the

“DANCE AS THOUGH NO ONE IS WATCHING...

LOVE AS THOUGH YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN

HURT BEFORE...SING AS THOUGH NO ONE IS LISTENING.”

“I’M SO STRESSED!” WE HEAR IT SAID ALL THE TIME, EVEN SAY IT OURSELVES.BUT WHAT IS STRESS?

DON’T WORRY. BE HAPPY!

Stress is a reaction to an outside force that throws your body out of whack. The outside force can be physical demands on the body or it can be psychological by having excess strain placed on

your mental capacity.Another way to sum up stress is: ‘The confusion created when one’s mind overrides the body’s basic desire to choke the living daylights out of some jerk who desperately deserves it.’Everyone is susceptible to physical or psychological stress at some point in their lives. In fact nearly 75 per cent of the general population experiences at least ‘some stress’ every two weeks. Working mothers are most likely to experience stress, particularly when they do not have enough support as they try to balance career, family life, housework, exercise and a social life. Indicators of prolonged stress and anxiety can manifest in physical complaints such as weight gain and overeating, depression, hair loss, difficulty breathing, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and attacks on the immune system. Stress depletes our energy and breaks us down emotionally and physically.Medication and doctor intervention are required in some instances but luckily self help can also be of great benefit. The degree of symptoms can depend on our ability to recognise anxiety and overcome stress at its early stages. Now, it is unrealistic just to pack up and walk away when things get too hot to handle. We all have responsibilities and demands from jobs and in the home. There are many stress management techniques that can assist in overcoming the negative effects of tension in your life. While not one tip or technique will manage every symptom, trying new approaches and doing a little research to find a method that helps you and your situation can be extremely beneficial. Some ideas are light repetitive exercises such as walking, writing your feelings in a journal, controlled breathing, eating well, drinking herbal teas, aromatherapy, music and, of course as they say, laughter is the best medicine. But remember, never be afraid to speak up and ask for help. Sometimes just sitting down and expressing your feelings can lift a huge weight off your shoulders. Positive mantras are also a wonderful way to take stock of life and put things in perspective. IM

BRIAN BORG | MYOTHERAPIST | FIRST THINGS FIRST WELLNESS CENTRE

THERE IS A TREATMENT FOR THAT CONTINUOUS CHRONIC MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN THAT’S BEEN BUGGING YOU FOR MONTHS OR YEARS.

IS CHRONIC PAIN RUINING YOUR LIFE?

Nociceptors are found in skin, muscles and internal organs. They can be stimulated by temperature (hot or cold), chemical, pressure or tissue damage such as a cut, and will send their signal in varied rates to the brain for processing. For example, scalding your hand in hot water will send a very fast signal to the brain, resulting in a response sent back to the motor nerves for muscles to contract quickly and remove your hand from the danger.Ongoing pain can be caused by this protection response where muscles have been recruited to protect an injury, tightening a joint to restrict its movement. If these muscles and joints are held tight over a period of time, they too become the cause of pain.At this point, not only is it possible for the posture to be misaligned, but the pain may have moved away from the original offending injury. This effect can be as extreme as an ankle injury causing back and neck pain (when an ankle sprain occurs, usually the lower leg muscles will tighten when the ankle is held still to reduce pain. This then causes a limp and the whole mechanics change –

muscles in the hip and gluteal begin to tighten as the leg swing has been reduced. This restricts the natural roll of the pelvis and can begin to cause low back pain and eventually follows right through to the neck).Continued treatment on and around the back or neck will only target the symptoms and the pain will return if proper leg movement is not restored. That’s not to say all back pain is caused from the ankle, moreover, there are usually postural deficiencies associated with chronic pain.Myotherapy is dedicated to looking for the cause of the pain or postural imbalances so that the pain can be reduced long term. Postural assessments, orthopaedic testing, deep massage, stretching, mobilising, and dry needling can all be employed in the treatment. This is reinforced by a home exercise and stretching plan to lengthen tight muscles and strengthen remaining weaknesses.

Chronic persistent pain can be mild or very debilitating and, in some cases, can cause depression due to its nature. Unfortunately, there is no specific test for chronic pain – while X-rays will show broken bones, and MRI scans will find bulging discs or joint calcification; only a trained body worker will find postural imbalances caused from tight or weak muscles that in-turn cause ongoing chronic pain. It’s this type of undiagnosed pain that lead some sufferers to begin to feel that they are being labelled hypochondriacs.Throughout our bodies, pain is sensed through peripheral nerves that send electrical signals along their pathways into the spinal cord and then to the brain for processing. The peripheral nerves branch out from the spinal cord like an intricate network of fibres weaving their way to all parts of our bodies. While these peripheral nerves perform different functions, the nerves employed for sensing stimuli such as pain are called sensory nerves and have sensors called nociceptors attached to their endings.

Monty Pryor’s versatile talents have taken him from nightclub work, to being a silver medallist basketball player, an actor in seminal films like Women of the Sun to a multi-award winning author of six books, most recently Shake A Leg, which won

him the PMs Literary Award for 2011.Shake A Leg was developed within the walls of the old Fremantle gaol, now the Fremantle Children’s Literature Centre. He’d arrived there for a week as writer-in-residence, with fresh jet lag from London. Illustrator Jan Ormerod saw Boori’s photographs of indigenous dancers at the Laura Festival before he slipped off for a long sleep. When he woke he was presented with a table of scattered paintings that began their collaboration to illustrate Shake A Leg. Boori and multi-award winning author Meme McDonald over three years refined the book’s text.Boori Monty Pryor grew up in 1950s Townsville. Life in the north then was a hothouse of relations between whites and mixed indigenous groups. It wasn’t always pretty. On Palm Island his Uncle relived how as a young kid he was forced to shoot Superintendent Curry who was on a rampage to kill whites. Boori, like all of his peers, experienced violence from both sides of the law.

Boori had tried to leave school but his father wouldn’t let him, forever saying that if the world gives you lemons, then make something good like lemonade. “I said to Pops, ‘Dad school sucks I don’t wanna go to school anymore’,” Monty tells. “Dad’s body was caked in layers of salt having laid bitumen in 40 degree heat from 6am. Pops stood up in his salty socks and with a wry smile looked at me and said, ‘Well my boy, you’ve got two choices: either school, or death’.”Boori will now go anywhere to get to school – inner city Sydney to central Northern Territory. He wrestles against low literacy for all Australian kids through storytelling, dance and playing “didge”. They make paint from dirt that creates one story of the children’s art and of the history in the earth. His formula makes writing fun.My child had invited him to visit her class. The teaching staff, like most people, didn’t know who he was until he stayed for an hour-and-a-half with students and teachers enthralled by his storytelling. He lifted one self-written book, followed by another and another that told stories of a frog befriending a boy, an Aboriginal pizza maker and more. Staff later found there’s a whole syllabus to study his books that interweave Aboriginal history and his anti-racism message. But at the time they laughed so hard and Boori knew how to play to the crowd for more laughs. One teacher who had come to the class when he realised his class wasn’t coming to music, said, “Why aren’t we all teaching like this?”

HE LEARNT HOW AS A NIGHTCLUB DJ, SWITCHING MUSIC FOR DIFFERENT TASTES CAUSED THE DANCE FLOOR TO BREATHE AND PATRONS TO SPEND AT THE BAR. HIS CROWD FOR THE PAST TWENTY YEARS, THOUGH, HAS BEEN CENTRED IN THE CLASSROOM.

RECENT RESEARCH REVEALS A STRONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORAL HEALTH AND GENERAL HEALTH. PUT SIMPLY, KEEPING YOUR MOUTH HAPPY AND HEALTHY WILL HELP TO KEEP YOUR WHOLE BODY SMILING.

A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER YOU

Some interesting health facts:

• People with moderate to severe gum disease are at higher risk of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Damage caused by the immune system and chronic inflammation are central to both diseases.

• Chronic periodontal disease is a risk for people with diabetes, as it can worsen blood glucose control. And diabetics are prone to gum disease, due to reduced saliva levels.

• Chronic periodontal disease is a risk for people with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can result in decreased jawbone density and tooth loss. Damage from gum disease further aggravates the problem.

• Chronic periodontal disease is a risk during pregnancy, being linked with pre-term and low-weight births.

• Poor gum health is linked to a rise in inflammation levels in the body which can lead to heart attack and stroke.

• A seemingly healthy diet – high in fruits, juices and sports drinks can lead to decay and acid erosion of the enamel.

• Oral bacteria can be aspirated into the lungs and cause diseases such as pneumonia, particularly in high-risk groups such as the elderly.

• Oral bacteria can be swallowed into the stomach, increasing the risk of H. Pylori stomach ulcers.

• Oral diseases can make chewing difficult, which may lead to changes in the diet and malnutrition.

• Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream through bleeding sites in the mouth. This is a risk to the heart and circulatory system, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

WHAT IF I TOLD YOU I HAD A SECRET THAT COULD BOOST YOUR CHILD’S IQ QUITE SIGNIFICANTLY?And that the same secret would also improve your child’s behaviour, increase their self-confidence, improve their exam scores and also fine tune their memory, reading ability, and maths results? Can I also add that it helps in the friendship stakes as well?Too good to be true? Think again – the secret has been around for about 1,500 years and started in India. It has been proven again and again to do all this and more. It’s available everywhere and it’s cheap. Best of all it’s a game! It’s chess. The old game certainly delivers in the educational stakes. There are thousands of schools in more than 30 different countries that use chess as part of their curriculum. They have recorded and studied the effects and much has been written. To quote a New York chess teacher, John Kennedy, who implements chess in schools as part of the curriculum: “The most wonderful thing about chess is the way it transforms people from the inside out. Once they’re exposed to the instruction, kids get chess fever. And once they get hooked, their desire to apply themselves soars. The ability to concentrate – really concentrate – takes a quantum leap the minute chess sinks in.”What interests me the most is how brain scans have shown that learning to play chess is a major part of treatment for a whole range of emotional and psychological problems. These include dark or suicidal thoughts, aggression, rage, depression, moodiness, anxiety, ADD, panic, poor organisation, and poor judgement – I could go on. I recently attended a seminar where this cutting-edge research was shown, brain scans and all.So how does a game have such a profound effect? It is all to do with the parts of the brain that are used in chess that are stimulated (to get technical, the limbic system, the temporal lobe and the pre-frontal cortex). It is these areas of the brain that are under-active in all the problem areas I listed. Research shows stimulating these areas via chess significantly decreases the symptoms of these problems. Now to touch briefly on children with special needs: A special education teacher, Nadine Kee, has this to say about chess’ influence on her special needs students: “When students start playing chess, you can see the academic improvement immediately. From the first day when a child learns how to move a pawn, you’ll see a difference in their attitude, their behaviour, and their success in school.”

FINDING NEW FRIENDS…STICK WITH ME, THIS MAY GET ROUGH. I was in my usual team meeting when the subject of Facebook came up. The conversation suggested I had to become a “person” on Facebook. I thought I was already on Facebook? “Yes, Ewen you are on Facebook, but as a page”. While people can “like” the page they cannot become your friend, nor could you become other people’s friends. Now that may not sound like much of an antagonistic comment, but coming from my 22-year-old electorate officer with a ceremonial roll of the eyes and a half smile at the other people in the office, it was damn near a slap in the face. Lots of people like me! I have all the friends I want or need! I bet I have more friends than you EVER will have my mate. I let it hang out there for a little while. The air was electric with tension. Any minute now, they would realise the error of their ways and agree with me. Then, one of my closest allies reached across the table, patted my arm and said that I should not worry about it. They would just take care of it. Well, I never! Things got pretty rough then – there was a fair sooking, but I steeled myself and gave them all a frowning they would not soon forget.

It turns out that my Facebook page for Ewen Jones MP is there as an organisation and, therefore, the interaction with others is severely limited. There seems to be no point in being on Facebook if I can’t interact directly with “friends”. I can still go to the Herbert or the Vic Park and interact with people there. This, apparently, will be a different

“demographic”. I am using the “” marks to show you when my trusted and loyal staff used the “” marks in a gesture to show me just how far behind I was from the rest of the world. Don’t get me started on twitter. When I suggested I should tweet, oh, how they laughed. Sheree, my media adviser, said she did not have enough hours in the day to put out the fires I would start with my “front of mindedness”. No, I would not be allowed to tweet. Until now, I’ve only been allowed to tell them what I want to say and they go and put it “up” on Facebook. Now I am allowed to be a “person”. I have a new Facebook page and I have access to it! I have my friends (although none of mine are on Facebook). I asked my daughters if they would be my friend. Again, you should have heard the laughter!

Michael Bromage is putting the skills he learned at JCU’s School of Creative Arts to good use. His job involves showing everyday people how to use everyday equipment like smart phones, camcorders, cameras and computers to produce digital media.

Landing a job in Townsville has been a round trip for Michael. After graduating in 2001 and a stint writing advertising jingles for a local studio, he moved to Brisbane. Projects for National Geographic and the Discovery Channel followed. “In 2006 one of the National Geographic films was The World’s Worst Venom and that involved travelling the world to look for some of the most dangerous animals,” Michael explains.

It was while working on that project Michael caught the travel bug and decided to start his own business using his multimedia skills to develop clients’ business online. First he went to the United States before jumping continents to Europe, basing himself in the Netherlands. “I’d make sure the town I was in had a large enough population that people would be willing to try someone unknown,” Michael says. “I’d bring Tim Tams to the initial meeting and talk a little about what I could provide, then encourage potential clients to try me out for a lower fee than they’d pay their marketing people. My rule was to work half a day, and then go exploring for the other half. I’d stay in one spot for a while, save up some cash, then move to the next place. The good thing about the internet is that we can connect with clients from anywhere in the world.”

After years abroad, Michael had just touched down in Oz when he saw a job advert for an ABC Open producer in North Queensland. As fate would have it, he was hired. And while his ABC role keeps him busy, Michael also manages to find time to work on a novel. “It’s an adventure novel about multicultural relationships,” Michael reveals. “I released a short print run in 2009 with good feedback and plan to develop the story into an interactive book. With cheaper travel and instant global communication there is a growing number of people engaging in multicultural relationships.”

Michael’s work portfolio is impressive for someone who has just turned 30. For those who wish to follow in his footsteps, he has this advice: “There’s a saying, ‘It’s better to ask for forgiveness than for permission’, which I see as, ‘It’s better to make something happen rather than waiting for something to happen’. If you want to do something, go ahead and do it, make it happen – as long as no one gets hurt in the process.”

And he certainly doesn’t have your run-of-the-mill personality. “The Chinese Crested breed is very happy and lively, and also very amusing,” Sharon smiles, who works from home in the family’s carpentry business. “They love to do ‘zoomies’, which is to race around the house – over furniture, on chairs – at high speed. They are sometimes called ‘monkey dogs’ because they are very agile and can climb – they also can hold onto things with their front paws.” Sharon has always admired the less-orthodox breed, but being rare and more expensive, she could never financially commit to one. That was until her daughter saw a ‘crestie’ on the Internet who was in need of a

loving home. “I rescued Louie (aka Looney) back in January. He was bred to be a show dog but after a few puppy shows, which he won, he developed an overbite so was disqualified from showing. He was of no use to the breeder so I flew him up from New South Wales. He is 11 months old now and, although he was very timid at first, with lots of love, kindness and patience he is becoming more conf ident every day.” Sharon says Louie provides a lot of entertainment to her family – Tyson (19) and Jazz (14) – and even husband Mark, although he’d never admit it. “Mark doesn’t think he’s a ‘real dog’ and doesn’t have anything to do with him, but he’s not an animal lover like the rest of us!

Although I have caught him talking to Louie when he thinks no one is watching!” Unable to imagine a home without a pet, Sharon recommends them to any family that has time and love to give. “Pets don’t judge you. They think you are the best person in the world and easily show it! But a pet is a big commitment – they are a lot of work and expense, but what you get back is worth it. I am an active volunteer at the Townsville RSPCA – if anyone is thinking of getting a pet they should check out the lovely animals waiting for homes at the shelter as they have all been de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated and wormed – ready to go to a new family.”

ANNA BRAGANZA PISTOL SHOOTER AND MEDICAL STUDENT

When Anna Braganza is not doing assignments, she’s playing violin, volunteering with the Australian Red Cross Youth, cooking, sewing dresses for friends and firing her .22 calibre pistol. “I get comments from people all the time that I don’t seem the type of person who would be a pistol shooter, especially given the field I’m studying,” the sharp shooter tells, who developed an interest in the sport after watching her Dad in competitions. “It’s interesting, and gives me an opportunity to clarify some of the presumptions people have made about the sport.”One of these is the perception that handling firearms is dangerous. “No one to date has ever been injured from being shot on a range in

Australia – the rules are very strict and if you don’t comply with the safety regulations you are sent off immediately,” Anna states, who later reveals she wasn’t as nervous as anticipated when she was able to fire her first gun at age 12. “As well, a lot of people don’t realise that shooting requires just as much, if not more, psychological strength as physical… you need to be able to block out your surroundings, the person next to you and the surrounding conditions to concentrate on your own target and game. You are responsible for every point you make.”And the points were certainly stacked on her side when Anna competed at the recent annual Australian Shooting Games – one of the major

events on the shooting calendar. It was here she claimed gold for Women’s Air Pistol, silver for Junior Women’s Air Pistol and bronze for Junior Sports Pistol. The results mean Anna has qualified for the National Junior Squad and – depending on her performance over the next 12 months – she may make the National Women’s Squad when she turns 21. “Qualifying means I could potentially enter the Commonwealth or Olympic Games,” the passionate Anna explains. “That would be the ultimate honour – being a professional shooter, but also standing for something greater in representing your country.”If you are interested in the sport you can find more information at townsvillepistolclub.org.

Debbie McLean has always had dogs in her life, but nothing prepared her for the sudden loss of her much-loved five-year-old Bordie Collie, Panda. “Everyone loved Panda so much – he had such a beautiful personality and would give me little cuddles when I came home from work,” Debbie explains from her Ayr home. “I was so confused when he passed away – he developed an immune disease and his body gave up. I must admit, previously, our pets were always buried in the backyard, but James Cook University vets recommended Pet Heaven NQ. It was a big decision, but after the whole experience I couldn’t recommend them highly enough.”Debbie explains having Panda cremated and his ashes put in a box that she can keep upstairs in the bedroom (his favourite place) has made the grieving process much easier. “It makes me feel good to know that he’s here with me,” she says. Having never used Pet Heaven NQ before

– a family-owned facility that offers a pet cemetery burial service, crematorium, and personalised memorial products – Debbie was impressed with the extent that the team understood how much Panda meant to her.“They even went to the extent of ensuring that his ashes rode up the front of the van with the delivery driver when he was getting transported back from Townsville to Ayr because I couldn’t bear the thought of him rattling around in the back,” Debbie tells.“The vets in Ayr were amazed that Pet Heaven went to that length and I’ve kept the note that accompanied him because it was so beautiful. The kindness of everyone involved has just blown me away and it’s definitely an approach I’ll be taking with my other animals.”

SERVES 4

2kg pork-belly spare ribsLemon wedges to serve

Sticky rub4 tbsp brown sugar1 tbsp caraway seeds, ground1 tbsp ground ginger1 tbsp dried chilli flakes2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper1 tsp salt

1. Combine the sticky rub ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Use your hands to rub the mixture into the spare ribs. Cover with plastic wrap and leave to marinate in the refrigerator overnight, or for up to 2 days. Turn the meat around in the marinade every 6 hours or so.2. When ready to cook, light a fire in your kettle barbecue. When the coals die down to about 160°C, scatter a small handful of hickory woodchips onto the coals to create smoke.3. Sit the ribs on the grill, pull down the hood on the barbecue and cook the ribs for 3 hours. Every 45 minutes or so, add a few more woodchips to keep the smoke going.4. When the ribs are cooked, they should be wonderfully soft and tender, enough to fall apart in your hands.5. Serve with lemon wedges.

TIP: Pork-belly spare ribs need long, slow cooking, which really gives time for the smokey flavours to penetrate the meat.

4 fresh or preserved vine leaves4 jumbo quailSaltFreshly ground black pepper4 thyme sprigs4 bay leaves4 slices of lemon50g butter, cut into 4 pieces4 long slices of lardo or pancetta2 tablespoons olive oil

1. Blanch the vine leaves if using fresh leaves, or rinse them if using preserved. Pat the leaves dry, and cut out the stems.2. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Season the quail generously inside and out. Fill the cavity of each bird with a sprig of thyme, a bay leaf and a slice of lemon, and tuck in a piece of butter. Wrap each bird in a slice of lardo (or pancetta) and drizzle with a little oil.3. Roll each bird in a vine leaf, then wrap in a large square of foil. Arrange the quail in a baking tray and roast for 20–25 minutes. If you like your quail crisp, you can then open the foil and vine leaf and brown under the grill for 2–3 minutes.4. Unwrap the foil (reserving any cooking juices) and carefully remove the vine leaves from the quails. Split the quails in half and serve them with the vine leaves on the side and a drizzle of cooking juices. I like to sit them on smokey Baba Ghanoush, or serve them with tabbouleh salad and minted yoghurt.

AS FLO RIDA LANDS IN TOWNSVILLE THIS MONTH, JUPITERS WILL HOST A VEGAS-STYLE POOL PARTY ON A SCALE THAT TOWNSVILLE HAS NEVER SEEN. HELLO MIAMI VICE…

FLO TIME

Known for hits like Low (featuring T-Pain), Turn Around (5,4,3,2,1), Who Dat Girl (featuring Akon) and Club Can’t Handle Me (featuring David Guetta); American rapper Flo Rida will personally deliver the very best of his dance-inducing tunes in

Townsville on Sunday, October 23 as part of his Australia-wide tour. An exclusive event that’s been months in the making, Jupiters managing director Sean Knights says nothing has ever been showcased on the same scale: “This will be a sexy but sophisticated Sunday afternoon session with more than six hours of non-stop entertainment,” Sean explains. “We will have local DJs warming up the crowd before two national support acts, Timomatic and Havana Brown, hit the stage to ramp the fans up for Flo Rida.“One of the really exciting aspects is the 10 über-exclusive VIP cabanas, which sold-out within days of going on sale to the public. Most cabanas will hold 10 people, some up to 30, and will be especially themed, featuring everything from leather lounges to crystal chandeliers, canapés, beverages, a private waiter and some of the best views of the stage. The people who will be in these cabanas should really expect to feel like celebrities in their own right for the night.“It will be a concert like no one has ever seen in Townsville and we plan to continue to bring international acts to Jupiters. This is very exciting not only for Jupiters, but also for Townsville and the entire North Queensland region.”While there are no more Townsville Events cabanas available, there are still Poolside Lawn tickets on offer, which will allow revellers to enjoy the concert from the Jupiters poolside lawn. Sean says this area will also feature a bar and large screens so no one misses the action.

These tickets cost $80 plus booking fee and can be purchased from the Entertainment Centre box office at tecc.net.au.

AS ICONIC TOWNSVILLE’S MORLEY FAMILY FUNERAL HOME TURNS 50 THIS MONTH, MANAGING DIRECTOR RAY VALDETER REFLECTS ON THE FAMILY FOUNDATIONS OF THE THIRD GENERATION BUSINESS.

FORGED BY FAMILY FOR FAMILIES

Ray Valdeter joined the family business after working for 10 years in the building industry, and has now been a part of Morleys Funerals for 40 years: “I started helping out part time and then went full time in 1971,” Ray shares. “To be honest, I didn’t

realise I would get so much satisfaction out of it – I didn’t want to do anything else. The biggest factor for me is being here for people, to help them through a very difficult stage in their lives.”Morleys Funerals is now a third generation family business with Basil and Betty Morley as founders, plus three of Ray and wife Lyn’s four children – Luke, Rhys and Maxine and a son-in-law Larry Newman – are involved. Basil and Betty’s daughters Margaret and Robyn also have an interest in the business. “As well as a focus on family involvement, we are really fortunate to have another 15 or so full time and part time non-family staff members who represent the Morley tradition in a professional and extraordinary manner,” Ray states, emphasising: “Morleys Funeral Home is the trusted name in funeral service in Townsville and it is imperative for us to maintain our high standards so that we can earn client trust. It’s a very sensitive event we’re dealing with and we only get one chance to properly honour the loved one. It is our company focus to treat the deceased as we would look after our own family.”For this reason, the Morley family opts for the latest in equipment and prides itself on the comfortable facilities constructed in 1999 – a vast

improvement on the original funeral parlour at Dearness Street in Garbutt. With a fleet of modern hearses, coaches and transfer vehicles and state-of-the-art technology in the Lakes Chapel, Ray says the priority is on fulfilling family’s expectations. “Unlike a wedding where there are months or even years of preparation, sometimes we only have a couple of days to plan the funeral, so the chance for error needs to be minimised,” Ray explains. “It’s so rewarding for us to see the look of satisfaction on people’s faces after the ceremony… our focus is for the family to be glad they entrusted us with this great responsibility of caring for their loved one and, equally important, that we cared for them as well.”With today’s technological advancements, Morleys Funeral Home has embraced the latest in audiovisual equipment and is able to offer many multimedia options, including web streaming funeral ceremonies live from the Lakes Chapel to any part of the world with access to the internet. Ray says this is all about offering a personalised touch to the ceremony. “There are many ways to do this by taking up many of the options available at Morleys, even things like custom decorating the casket if desired,” says Ray. “At the end of the day, giving exceptional service can make our clients’ grief so much easier to deal with.“The great thing is, that after 50 years, we are still family owned and operated which gives us the freedom to make our own decisions and do whatever it takes to offer Townsville families the ultimate in funeral care.”

HARRY NORMANDASHTANGA YOGA INSTRUCTOR | CO-OWNER OF LIVE & BREATHE YOGA

How did you discover yoga? Six years ago after a chance meeting with a yoga teacher. I’d been looking for a new way to exercise since I broke my hip socket competing at taekwondo a few years before that. How readily do men embrace it? It’s still pretty standard for blokes to think of yoga as a soft option for girls, but I think it’s improving. I’ve seen army team boxers struggle with Ashtanga yoga because they can’t rely on their muscle bulk and power to get them through the class. I’ve taught everyone from office workers to players from the Townsville Crocs, and enquiries are increasing from men all the time. What are the benefits for guys? Yoga improves coordination, balance and agility – all critical elements of injury

prevention, successful rehabilitation and athletic performance. For me, yoga has been really useful in learning to let go of the competitive side of life. Yoga helps you recognise and stop that kind of thought pattern, which can really free you to enjoy life a lot more. Does yoga help with weight training? Regular yoga will balance anyone’s joints and muscles, which allows you to generate more mechanical force when lifting. Another benefit of yoga is that it encourages good breathing, which accelerates recovery after exercise. What accomplished sports people use yoga in their training? Ryan Giggs (600+ appearances for Manchester United) practises yoga regularly and still plays at the highest level

of soccer at the age of nearly 38, and Andy Murray credits yoga as part of his performance training. Being from Scotland, I taught yoga to the Glasgow Rangers first team squad in the year they won the Premier League back from Celtic – the year before I moved to Townsville. Their sports scientist reckoned the injury rate was a lot lower that year than in the previous season. What have you personally got out of the practice? A wife! Allison and I met when we were studying to be yoga teachers in Scotland, and we got married on Horseshoe Bay recently. It’s also helped me turn into a bit more of a morning person, which is much more handy in Australia than it was in Scotland.

BELINDA COCO TOUCH OF UTOPIA SALON MANAGER

How long have you been hairdressing? 11 years and it’s been an absolute pleasure – I have made some fantastic friends through colleagues and clients! What do you enjoy the most? Everyone has an individual style, which makes hairdressing continuously interesting. It’s a very social career, however you still need to have professionalism, skill and an understanding of the needs and wants of your clients. What are Touch of Utopia’s hairdressing and beauty philosophies? To ensure every client loves their appearance and is educated about how to manage their hair and make-up. We love our team environment and relaxed atmosphere. What are

your staff’s specialties? Melissa Coulter, the salon owner, is an expert in make-up using Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. As the salon manager and a trained colour technician with Schwarzkopf for three years, I love keeping abreast of the latest looks. Denni-Elle White is our senior stylist who creates beautiful levels of blonde and has a youthful take on style. Lyn Rochford, another of our senior stylists, is extremely experienced after hairdressing in Sydney through the 70s 80s and 90s, with many of these looks making a comeback. Karmen Ryan, our fourth year apprentice, has developed into a fantastic stylist – her upstyles are amazing. Maddison

Mackenzie – our first year apprentice – has mastered all elements of our beauty services and blow-drying and is now moving on to cuts and colours. What’s the hottest style as the warmer months approach? The bangs (fringes) will definitely be making a come back, complemented with a high ponytail. Our clients always ask for classic looks like Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn, plus modern looks like Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson’s short style. What’s your product-of-the-moment? Schwarzkopf Osis Fibre Light. It’s a lightweight fibre wax that gives the hair good definition and separation, and it’s great for curly hair!

REFRESHING APPROACH TO CUSTOMER CARE

FRESH HOMES is a family-owned business operated by Lloyd Payne. Lloyd was born and raised in Railway Estate and began his career in housing with Glenwood Homes as a new home sales consultant in 1995. From there, he worked his way up to the position of general manager. Lloyd left Glenwood Homes in 2005 and started his own building company Fresh Homes with Kim – his wife of 23 years – and their seven children. “I always wanted to start my own company and I felt that we could do a great job with the lessons learned over time,” Lloyd shares. “Throughout my career I have strived to get customer satisfaction to the highest level possible – a commitment that

remains within my own business today.”Fresh Homes’ friendly team consists of Stephanie Abercrombie, who is the general manager and has 29 years of involvement within the local industry. Neal Tompkins is the supervisor and has more than 40 years of local experience, plus the added bonus of being an open builder in his own right. Fresh Homes’ sales team is Suess Griffin, Erin Hayward and Glen Rowe. Suess and Glen may be recognised from their days with Geoff Pickering Hyundai where they won numerous national awards for sales and service. Erin worked in Townsville City Council’s planning department

and has in-depth knowledge of what customers can build on their land.Lloyd says the team at Fresh Homes is extremely proud of every home built, with the top priority for the business being customer communication and satisfaction. “We ensure we do what we say we’ll do and, although we are certainly proud of our quality product and finish, our real difference comes down to the way we manage the project and interact with our customers,” Lloyd says. “The feedback we’ve had so far has been very pleasing.”
