RESTAURANT Controversy over the pro- posed artwork to be erected in Duleek has drawn various parts of the local commu- nity together to endorse the Maurice Har- ron ‘Family’ sculpture, re- sulting in the ‘Let’s keep our art here in Duleek’ move- ment. A support meeting will be held in O’Neill’s Duleek on Thursday 14 August at 7.30pm. Critics of the installation claim a lack of con- sultation on the part of Meath County Coun- cil who commissioned the artwork with €40,000 from the Indaver planning fund. However, those who endorse the project say that the artist designed the piece with the site in mind. ‘Family’ created by Maurice Harron is a 4.5metre high sculpture featuring a family of two parents and three children with a tree, whose individual leaves are designed to represent various aspects of the local com- munity, including a horse being shoed by a blacksmith. Another of the leaves represents fruit picking reflecting Duleek’s history of market gardening. Maurice Harron stayed in Duleek for over a month talking to the community before designing the piece. Heritage Group members informed the artist of the location’s historical back- ground, where Clarke’s Forge stood, and recommended a piece of art depicting a stone horseshoe shaped doorway with a blacksmith working on an anvil. The sculp- ture was subsequently amended to include reference to the forge. Cllr Stephen McKee suggested that a break- down in communication is to blame, and has put down a motion for the September Area Meeting of Meath CC ‘That Meath County Council re-start the public competition and public consultation on the Duleek sculpture project and carry out a new process whereby the people of Duleek will have a say in select- ing a piece of art for the mound in Duleek’. However, Cllr Sharon Keogan is fully behind the statue, saying that most groups in the vil- lage support it. ‘Don’t let this artwork go to another village in the East Meath area! It was commissioned with money from Indaver for a particular location in Duleek – let’s keep our art in Duleek!’ According to Kevin Stewart of Meath CC, the piece was commissioned following public consultation and tender process, which is now complete. It will be erected – preferably in Duleek, but somewhere in the Slane Area if not. ‘If this statue of ‘Family’ doesn’t go up in Duleek it will not be replaced with an- other design,’ he explained.
