Drogheda’s new Garda Superintendent is Duleek native, Andrew Watters. Formerly Garda Superintendent in Ardee where he was responsible for Mid Louth, the Duleek man was promoted to the rank of Superintendent in 2012, and is the former Irish head of the International Criminal Police Organisation, Interpol, and the European Union’s law enforcement agency, Europol.

Superintendent Watters is a past pupil of St Mary’s DS, Drogheda, and former Duleek GFC player and coach. He is a huge cycling fan and is former chairman of the Duleek Schoolboys section. Superintendent Watters praised the local Text Alert initiatives, noting that there are 13 operating in this region, which work well. Slane native, Gerry Smith, recently retired as Drogheda Superintendent after 33 years, having been Super since 2005.

New Garda Superintendent Duleek’s Greyhound Bar has re-opened

under new ownership, making it the only bar currently open in the village. Every success to Damien and his team! The Greyhound has agreed to facilitate the positioning of community CCTV on the building for the Duleek Area. Hopefully it won't be too long before Kelly’s and O’Neills are back in business too.

LIMEKILN’S BIRTHDAYThe Limekiln in Julianstown is currently celebrating its 1st Birthday! Lots going on over the May Bank Holiday to celebrate, such as BBQ, promotions, kiddie’s events and entertainment, which saw crowds join in the fun.

Feels like yesterday that the trendy bar/restaurant opened its doors, following years of nothing in the village. Congrats to John, Paula and Tom. The Dovecote is the new function room at The Limekiln, which is now available for all sorts of gatherings including weddings.

PADDY’S OK!Duleek man Paddy Corry took a turn just seconds after this photograph was taken at the recent bowls’ finals in Duleek parish hall, and we are glad to confirm that Paddy’s ok! Thanks to the quick thinking and prompt action of bowls players and others, Paddy had instant assistance as two nurses tended to him, with pharmacist Tom Maher arriving minutes later, followed by a First Responder. An ambulance and paramedics quickly arrived and took him to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital where he is recovering.

Local teenager David Kelly (13), no longer fits in his child-sized wheelchair, so his mother, Bernie, is holding a fundraiser for a new wheelchair/mobility car in The Ashbourne House Hotel on Saturday 11 June from 8 til late! There will be music from the 60s 70s & 80s, and people are encouraged to dress in appropriate costume if possible! Finger food will be served and tickets cost €15.

David, who suffers from Cerebral Palsey, lives in Cushinstown with mother Bernie and brother James (19). He attends a special school in St Mary’s Johnstown, and will attend a special summer camp this July. David is non-verbal with no mobility, and depends totally on his mother. Although small for his age, lifting him in and out of bed or his wheelchair daily, is taking its toll on Bernie’s back, as David is not provided with a home hoist.

‘David is a very happy young boy, who is always smiling or giving you the ‘thumbs up’ sign,’ explained his mother, Bernie. ‘Although he will also let you know if he’s not happy by shouting!’

David is very sociable and loves company, although this is now proving a challenge as Bernie has to lift him in and out of her car and place him in a child seat in the front of the car. ‘I can

really only take him out for hospital appointments or other vitally important events, as it’s getting too difficult at this stage – he took a growth spurt when he hit his teens and I can’t manage to lift him much now,’ admitted Bernie.

Saying that her neighbours are ‘really brilliant’ at helping out and supporting the family, Bernie finds herself fighting for everything for David. ‘Now he needs a new wheelchair and we have to fundraise ourselves to provide it. I hope everybody comes along on the night, has some fun and makes this happen, as David is our little ray of sunshine!’

For further details or to support this fundraiser in any way, contact Bernie on 087-6609130.

Wheelchair fundraiser PUDDEN HILLNow two years in operation in our locality, bringing fun and excitement for toddlers and children, Pudden Hill Activity Centre at Cushinstown has just celebrated its 2nd birthday! There’s always lots to do there with outdoor playground, soft play area, birthday fun and games, go karting, and extreme activities. It’s certainly a great place for birthday fun and games for all ages!

Pudden Hill’s new Animal Farm opened for the birthday celebrations, with a range of animals available for petting and viewing.

Unfortunately just a week later, vandals broke in and released the animals into the wild during the night. Most were recovered by staff searching the surround areas for hours, but three rabbits and a black guinea pig are still missing. It must be stressed that these are domesticated pets and not animals used to living in the wild, so being ‘free’ will certainly pose challenges to them, namely safety and feeding. However, kittens born that week remain safe and secure.

1916 hero Patrick Dennany, Donore

Bellewstown Heritage Group unveiled a commemoration plaque to James McCormack at the Motorway Bridge on the Lisdornan/Dardistown boundary exactly 100 years to the very date he was shot, on Tuesday 26 April 1916 at 11am. Community Historian Brendan Matthews spoke at the event on McCormack’s life and death; a poem by Francis Ledwidge was read, a number of other speakers, singers and musicians also addressed the gathering. The event was attended

by relatives of James McCormack, Mayor of Drogheda, Cllr Paul Bell, Meath CC Chairperson Cllr Brian Fitzgerald, ONE, Irish Army, County Council representatives and the public.

Mc Cormack was born at the ‘Spot’, Lisdornan in 1877 and lived it the area until 1906 when the family moved to Baldoyle, Dublin. He worked at Baldoyle Racecourse and married a local woman with whom he had 3 sons. James joined the Labour Movement in

Dublin, and following the Lock-out strikes in Dublin City in 1913/14, he joined the Irish Citizens Army. McCormack became an Officer under Commander, James Connolly and on Easter Monday morning in 1916, he led his Battalion of men from Baldoyle to Liberty Hall to join the Uprising.

James was stationed at the GPO and was shot by a sniper’s bullet in the vicinity of Moore Land close to the GPO. He was laid to rest in Glasnevin

alongside many of his fallen comrades and joined the list of Volunteers and Citizen Army men who had given their life for Ireland.

Donore’s 1916 hero Patrick Dennany, was honoured at local commemorations recently. Born in the village, Dennany moved to Dublin, fought in the GPO with Pearse and Connolly during the Easter Rising, was one of the last to leave the GPO, was captured and jailed in Frongoch, before being released in December 1916. Following the death of his wife, he moved back to Tubberfin, Donore in 1939, where he lived with his sisters.

Patrick was an active member of St Mary’s GFC and was chairman of Donore Drama Group. He also fundraised tirelessly for the church and school. He passed away in 1952.

A procession was led from Donore by the ONE and musicians, to the old cemetery where a re-enactment took place. Members of Dennany’s family were present, and laid a wreath at his graveside. MC Jim Gorman and locals dressed in period costume, with the story of Dennany’s rebel

life told in a visual way by locals and pupils of Donore school. Piper Darragh O'Heiligh played laments, and other read out names of locals who perished in World War 1. Poems were read and Fr Tony Ganoude spoke of the Ireland of today and the future. The proclaimatain was read by Dick McKeown, with Alannah Murphy singing the National Anthem to close the event. A plaque to Patrick Dennany will be unveiled at his home later in the year.

A performance of ‘A snap shot of the Easter Rising’ written by the late Dr Caroline Gallagher, was recently performed by Duleek Drama Players and friends in Duleek Courthouse in her honour. The event was staged on two nights before a full house each time.

The play was written and compiled by Dr Gallagher and explored 1916 through the main signatories of the proclamation and those associated with it. Described as ‘magnificent’, ‘passionate’, ‘emotional’ and ‘patriotic’, the story of the Rising was narrated by Michael Ferguson, supported by a cast of loyal ‘rebels’.

Dr Caroline Gallagher’s input, enthusiasm and dedication as secretary of Duleek Courthouse Committee is a great loss, and she is sadly missed by all.

Rory’s Stories proved a terrific fundraising night in aid of St Mary’s GFC, Donore recently. Daly’s was packed with parents, coaches, players, club members and the local community who enjoyed the comedy entertainment, and had a bit of craic outside of the pitch while also raising a few euro to support the ever increasing Juvenile section within the club. The club wishes to thank the local

businesses who donated spot prizes for the event, and say they are very lucky to have the support of these businesses who never fail to help out when they ask. So successful was this venture that St Mary’s is planning further events in the coming months.

‘Summertime, and the living is easy’ – and yes it is – if your children are occupied! What better way to keep them amused than learning a new skill, making friends, or keeping fit at a summer camp in this locality. There are many choices in this area with plenty to do over the summer months from occupying tiny tots to teenagers, from outdoor fun to stage appearances.

Young soccer players can learn more about the ‘Beautiful Game’ at camps in Duleek and Cloghertown this summer, where experts in the game will instruct and coach to a higher level. Youngsters will have tuition in all aspects of the game and try their hand at playing in different positions on the field, as well as doing drills to warm up, cool down and generally improve their fitness. Most of all, it’s great fun!

Being active and taking part in sport is vitally important for children, with over half of those under 14 years of age taking part in sport outside of school, most of them

boys. Evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults. Reducing physical inactivity is just as important as increasing physical activity. Aim for at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and sports summer camps can support this. Parents can encourage their children to play sport in many ways, including through role modelling and being active themselves.

Playing sports is essential for children’s overall development and it provides them more than physical benefits – they benefit socially and academically as well. And it doesn’t matter if the child excels at sports or not. Benefits include building self confidence, academic benefits, skills like leadership, strategic thinking and teamwork improve, social benefits, making friends and reducing stress.

Pudden Hill has indoor and outdoor facilities for children of all ages, from soft play area for toddlers, to more extreme sports like go karting, laser, shooting

AS WELL AS DOING DRILLS TO WARM UP, COOL DOWN AND GENERALLY IMPROVE THEIR

FITNESS. MOST OF ALL, IT’S GREAT FUN!

simulator, archery or paintball for older kids. Their new Animal Farm will delight and entertain all ages, from babies to adults, as children can pet the many farm animals housed there, and watch as hens and fowl peck around the farm yard. There’s also an on-site coffee shop for mums and dads.

As well as an exciting venue to visit for a birthday party or other celebration, Pudden Hill is running summer camps for children of different ages, with plenty to do both inside and in the great outdoors.

If you believe that ‘All the world’s

a stage’ and your child would like to appear on it, be sure to sign up for the Simpson Stage School’s summer camp. Mary Simpson and daughter Kym will bring boys and girls through all aspects of singing, dancing and performing, and will enhance the child’s natural ability in these talents.

Appearing on stage after careful preparation, develops a child’s confidence and ability to perform in public. Simpson Stage School has put generations of children on stage and has seen a few stars develop! This is a fun summer school, with plenty of scope for children to develop

their talents and express themselves through song and dance.

The benefits of drama for children are well known. It helps concentration, builds confidence, develops language and communication skills, encourages children to co-operate, supports numeracy skills, helps them understand the world around them, develops emotional intelligence,

assists physical development, develops creativity and nurtures friendships.

So as you can see, there’s plenty for children and youngsters to get involved in this summer right on our doorstep in County Meath! Select the activity you think your child would enjoy most, then call and book a place – you know you want the ‘living to be easy’ this summer!

Dogs also welcome, and there’s a dog show Saturday and Sunday. The Shopping Village caters for equestrian and non-equestrian tastes, with bargains galore. Artisan stalls will be offering a delicious array of foods from steaks to chocolates.

Ireland’s biggest picnic takes place there, so bring your rug and food basket or buy what you need on site. Picnic tables are also available. Book on www.tatts.ie / 01-8864300.

✪ THE LIFE OF ST KENANCopies of 14th and 15th century manuscripts about the office and life of St Cianan / Kenan, are currently on display in Duleek library, with accompanying translations. It is believed that one of the four manuscripts was indeed written in Duleek, most likely in St Mary’s Abby or St Michael’s Monastic Grange by the Augustinian Secunda Canons of Gloucester.

Local historian Michael Weymes has researched the Augustinian settlement in Duleek, and in 2013 published ‘The Augustinian Canons of Castle Rag’. Having discovered the four manuscripts – two in Old English, one in French and one in Latin, Michael commissioned translations of each, which he has compiled into a single booklet. The booklet and Michael’s book are also on display in the library for public viewing.

Individuals and groups who would like further information regarding the manuscripts and their history, or who wish to purchase copies of the English translation can contact Michael Weymes 087-27652050 or email [email protected]

Duleek turned purple once again for the annual Duleek Cystic Fibrosis 10K mini marathon, which saw hundreds of runners take to the streets, and raise over €16,000!

Organisers feel that 2016 was their best 10k ever, with 439 registered runners. They are so appreciative of those who supported the event in any way, especially Leigh Bagnall, and all the other people with Cystic Fibrosis who competed. What an achievement!

So far the amount raised stands at €16,753. Following the 10k run, participants were treated to refreshments in Duleek courthouse. ✪ DOG FOULING Complaints about dog fouling have been received, with some dog owners bringing their pets into the grounds of the Maudelins apartments, Duleek, just to let them relieve themselves. This behaviour is not fair on residents who have to clean up after their unwelcome visitors have left. A number of repeat offenders have been identified and it is understood that action will be taken. One resident said they are being forced to ‘name & shame’ offenders as the management company is sending the residents letters about the issue.

Connell’s HouseConnell’s House/Barn, Duleek, has undergone a transformation! From a crumbling eyesore a year or two ago, it is now a chic and stylish bijoux residence, listed on Air B&B.

Dating back to the 17th century, the building stood at the time of the Battle of the Boyne and is mentioned in military notes from the Battle, but had fallen into disrepair in recent years.

It comprises an open plan kitchen, dining and living room space with a sofa bed for extra guests. There’s a double bed and en-suite shower room on the mezzanine level with views across the village green. To the rear is a sunny patio area.

A Smile for RyanFunds are still coming into the Smile for Ryan fund which aims to raise up to €300,000 towards DFMO trial cancer treatment in America for little Ryan who has neuroblastoma.

Thanks to Big Toms darts team from Duleek who unfortunately lost in the final against Daly's, but who donated their cheque for €150 to the fund. Team was Tony Scott, Thomas Brodigan, Ollie Arnold, Paddy Kearney, Johnny Byrne, Neill Barry, Derek Murphy, Niall Courtney, Sean Mc Murry & Captain Paul Mc Gauley.

Thanks also to The Mariner darts team, Drogheda, who unfortunately lost out in the final to The Morning Star. They donated their cheque for €350 to A Smile for Ryan. Thanks to Paul King, Alan Floody, Fergus Mc Keown, Damian Hetherington, David Andrews, Barry Hand, Martin Reynolds, Martin Kelly,

John Hetherington, Liam Hetherington, John Floody and Martin Russell.

Thanks to the staff of Penny’s, Drogheda for donating €255.25 made in their Easter Raffle and Bake sale. Thanks also to Little Joey's Creche & Montessori in Julianstown, for holding a fundraising Pyjama Day where the children raised €80.

Upcoming events include a 5km charity walk in Rathmullen Park, Drogheda at 1pm on Saturday 11 June, followed by a street party for the kids. Hell & Back endurance run takes place on Sunday 26 June. Primal Fitness Gym in Greenhills, Drogheda is dong free training on Thursdays at 7pm for those doing this for Ryan.

Strictly Come Dancing for Ryan takes place on Saturday 27 August in The Barbican Centre, Drogheda. 40 dancers are lined up to strut their stuff and training starts shortly.
