Tennis ace Federer inspires A star Katy

Ace Horsham student Katy Fisch-bacher says one of the world’s great-est tennis players provided the per-fect role model for her outstanding A level success.

Katy, 18, is one of thousands of stu-dents sharing delight, relief and in some cases disappointment in this year’s examinations.

But the talented young woman from Pulborough came up with the most original source of inspiration for her four A* results at A level.

Katy says seeing serial champion Roger Federer play “live” and follow-ing his career has strongly motivated her.

Pursuing her dream of studying medicine at Cambridge University is Katy’s reward for her academic suc-

cess.The former member of Horsham

Blue Star Harriers has previously shown a talent for high jumping and sprinting. Although she does not play tennis, she loves to watch it.

Katy said of Federer’s example. “I've seen Federer live three times, twice at the world tour fi nals at the O2 arena and once this year at Wimbledon. See-ing him play at Wimbledon was the best experience ever.

“He has inspired me to work hard ir-respective of how well I’m doing, to be gracious in defeat and humble in victo-ry. Last November Federer received the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship award, as voted for by other players; I hope that in the future I too will have an at-titude that gains respect from others in my fi eld.”

The District Post sent the comment of Katy to touring Federer, but he had not commented at the time we went to press. Katy, a student at Christ’s Hos-pital, Horsham...

Opening date for new school after holiday break

Children will get an exciting return to class after holidays when their new school is formally opened.

Barns Green Primary received its keys for its new building from Chris Gilbert, managing director of devel-opers Berkeley Homes (Southern) last Friday.

As a follow-up everyone associat-ed with the new school is invited to attend the offi cial opening ceremo-ny which will take place from 11am onwards on September 12.

The ceremony will start with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches from a number of lo-cal dignitaries, with school tours and a traditional fete, featuring a jazz band, from 1pm.

At last week’s key ceremony members of the committee who were instrumental in creating the new school were present. They were headmaster Simon Simmons, Chair of Itchingfi eld Parish Council Pen-ny Simmons, West Sussex County

Council member Amanda Jupp and Andrew McPhillips Development Director of Berkeley Homes (South-ern).

The new school can take up to 150 pupils. A new fully integrated high-speed broadband connection will enable the school to signifi cantly increase the role ICT will play in the curriculum.

The spacious hall enables the full PE curriculum to be taught indoors, something lacking in the previous school building.

Headmaster, Simon Simmons said: “It has been very exciting to play a key role in creating a brand new foundation on which to build the future of education in the vil-lage. The end result is a fantastic new school which I believe will pro-vide the local children the best op-portunity for success. It will be such a pleasure to welcome students and their parents to the offi cial opening ceremony in September.”

Sentimental reminders taken in Shipley burglaryA family’s cherished reminders of holidays were among a large quan-tity of distinctive jewellery stolen in a raid on a house.

A burglar or burglars struck at a house near Shipley, just off the A272 between West Grinstead and Coolham.

The owners were out and it is thought a royal blue holdall with black handles, which was among items sto-len, may have been used to carry the haul away.

Items taken included silver charm bracelets with the following charms either attached or awaiting attach-ment; Pluto, two steam locomotives, a San Francisco tram, Seattle Space Needle, Space Shuttle, Cannon, Horse and Cart, State of Liberty, liberty bell, saxophone, fan, birds of prey, hedge-hog, clover leaf, two whales, maple leaf, French wine sipper, Bath bridge, Welsh lady bell, Davey lamp, mounted knight, cathedral, square tower, gate-house arch.

Detective Constable Heidi McCall, of the Horsham priority crime team, said: "The charms were collected over a lifetime of holidays and are of high sentimental value. We would like to hear from anyone off ered such items in suspicious circumstances."

Among many other items stolen were gold oval cuffl inks, engraved SM,

VSOE black enamel cuffl inks, Pullman Loge cuffl inks, gold circular cuffl inks engraved with the Welbeck Army Col-lege logo, gold charms in the shape of a clog, a horn of plenty and a baseball, and a 1965 sixpenny piece on a chain with an infi nity charm.

lso taken was a wooden earring box made by the owner's daughter, deco-rated with a heart and the inscription "For Mum".

The raid occurred between 8am and 6pm on July 25 and police hope the public will come forward with some information that might help them.

Det Con McCall said: "Again, if anyone is off ered these items I would ask them to get in touch with police immediately. They are of high senti-mental value and are greatly missed by their owners."

She added: "The A272 is a busy road at all times of day, and someone may recall seeing a slow moving vehicle on this stretch of road or someone walk-ing along it, possibly with the royal blue holdall. I would also urge them to contact police."

Information can be emailed to [email protected] or phoned in on 101, quoting serial 1153 of 25/7.

Alternatively, contact the inde-pendent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. No name is required.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a road rage incident on the A264 Horsham Road.

It happened at about 5pm on the dual carriageway southbound at Pease Pottage.

Police say it was a busy time for traffi c, and would have forced several drivers to slow or stop to avoid collid-ing with the vehicles involved.

These were a white Ford Transit Connect van which had been forced to stop by a silver BMW 1-series car which had suddenly stopped in front.

The BMW driver, who had previous-ly made an obscene gesture at the van

driver, got out of his car with a stave of some kind and approached the van.

A woman from another vehicle tried to intervene but on reaching the van the angry motorist spat in the driver's face before returning to his own vehi-cle and driving off .

The confrontation happened on Wednesday of last week and Sussex Police this week appealed for public help in fi nding the suspected BMW driver.

PC Claire Harthill, said: "This hap-pened in the rush hour and there will have been plenty of people who saw the way in which the vehicles were

being driven."They will also have

seen the altercation in-volving the drivers and I would ask anyone with information to come for-ward."

They are asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting se-rial 1227 of 5/8.

Alternatively they can contact the independ-ent charity Crimestoppers without having to leave their name on 0800 555111.

Hunt for missing thiefPolice in north Sussex have been searching this week for 36-year old Robert Conn, who is wanted for recall to prison for breach-ing terms of his prison release li-cence.

Conn, who is described as white, 6'2", slim, with light brown hair and hazel eyes, had been on prison release licence part way through a 21-week sentence for theft.

Police said in media statement that he frequented the Crawley and Horsham areas.

At the time the District Post went to press Conn had not been report-ed found.

Anyone who sees him is asked to contact the police as soon as pos-sible via 101, quoting Sussex serial 950 of 28/07.

You can also contact the inde-pendent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling them on 0800 555 111.

Councillor Jim gets top pilot recognitionKeeping air passengers safe might not seem an obvious concern for a councillor.

But it is top of the list for Cllr Jim Sanson as he fl ies aircraft in a world way beyond the debating chamber at Horsham District Council. Jim, of Monastry Lane, Storrington, usually has his feet fi rmly on the ground dis-cussing local issues as a member for Chantry ward.

In another life he fl ies commer-cial planes, and one of the world’s top authorities has recognised him for meeting the latest and even more stringent safety standards.

Jim has been recognised interna-tionally by the Federation Aviation Administration, the national avia-tion authority of the United States and has been accepted onto the Ad-ministration’s prestigious Airman Certifi cation Database.

It is part of drive by the Adminis-tration to improve safety standards.

The database, which appears on the agency's website at www.faa.gov, names Cllr Sanson and other certi-fi ed pilots who have met or exceeded the high educational, licensing and medical standards established by the Administration.

Pilot certifi cation standards have evolved over time in an attempt to reduce pilot errors that lead to fa-tal crashes. The Administration’s standards, which are set in consulta-tion with the aviation industry and the public, are among the highest in the world.

Cllr Sanson trained to be a pilot in the USA and was granted a licence in 1999. He completed his training at the Space Coast Regional Airport , near Cape Kennedy in Titusville, Florida, USA.

Cllr Sanson said: " I am surprised and delighted by the news from the Federal aviation authority of the United States of America."

According to the Administration, the new regulations stem in part from the crash of Colgan Air 3407 in February 2009. An investigation re-vealed that the pilot had failed three check rides, the fl ying equivalent of driving tests, and might not have had adequate training to respond to the emergency leading up to the crash.

Cllr Sanson won his council seat in the May elections, p o l l -ing 2967 votes. Two other Con-servatives, R a y m o n d Dawe and Paul Mar-shall, were also elected to the ward, polling 3413 a n d 2 7 7 1 respec-tively.

High standards get better at Midhurst Rother College

Students and teachers at Midhurst Rother College at Midhurst say they are delighted with an excellent set of A Level results.

71% of A level grades were A*-C, 43% were graded A*-B, and 18% of en-tries resulted in A* and A grades. The college says that these results not only maintain the high standards of recent years but exceed them.

There were some excellent individ-ual results, including:

Jacob Calvo Penfold – A*, A, B (Uni-versity of Exeter – Mathematics)

Alison Collins – A*, A, A (University of Sussex – English Literature)

Annabelle Harris – A*, B, B (Uni-versity of Liverpool – Psychology)

William Murphy – A*, B, B (Univer-sity of Warwick – History)

Styn Oomen – A, B, B (University of London (QMUL) – Mathematics)

Elizaveta Steinberg – A*, A, A, B (University of London (SOAS) – Chi-nese Studies)

Lisa Taylor – A*, A*, B (University of Surrey – Psychology)

Dr Joe Vitagliano, college princi-pal said: "A levels are a world class qualifi cation and students at Mid-hurst Rother College are excelling in these challenging exams. Whilst the demands of A levels increase from year to year, the College continues to improve on its already high standards.

“Once again, a number of Midhurst students have secured places at top universities, including those in the Russell Group. The securing of high-status university places remains a key objective of the College.

“Given the constant media coverage of the work ethic of British school stu-dents, it is a privilege to be associated with such hard working and dedicated students; their excellent results are a just reward for their great eff orts.

Elizaveta Steinberg’s 2 As, and A star and B will see her through to studying Chinese at London Univer-sity.

The Weald school enjoys “bumper” results

Three students helped The Weald School at Billingshurst achieve a milestone as it celebrates what it called “another bumper set of re-sults” with 84% of grades at A*-C and amongst the school’s best ever results.

The school achieved a fi rst when three students in the same year were all accepted at Cambridge University. Tom McCann, four A*s, will study Natural Sciences at Robinson College. Lauren Sullivan, two A*s and two As, will study Veterinary Science at Fit-zwilliam College.

Head Boy Benedict Welch, three A*s one A, will study German at Jesus Col-lege. Remy Shaieb was also celebrat-ing after achieving three A* and one A, gaining entry to Imperial College to study Chemical Engineering as was Grace Whyman who was accepted at

Leeds to study Medicine.Headteacher Peter Woodman said:

“It has been fantastic to watch stu-dents as they get their results and see that their hard work over the last two years has paid off . Results across the ability range are again very good with our average grade per entry the high-est it has ever been. Over one third of all grades achieved were at A* or A. Well done to students, staff and par-ents.”

Head of Sixth Form, Tom Back-shall, said “About 85% of our stu-dents will go onto University with the vast majority getting in with their fi rst choice. Whilst we are thrilled with our head-line fi gures and congratulate the students going to some of the major Russell group Universities, we are just as

pleased when students achieve their target grades and gain entry to their course of choice wherever it is across the country. It is really up lifting to see that the hopes and dreams of so many students had come to fruition”.

Christ’s Hospital pupils last year topped the West Sussex league tables for A levels results and the Horsham school says this year’s results remain strong with some outstanding achievements.

The results show notable suc-cesses at A2, with a solid A*- B pass rate of 72%. Additionally, a third of the cohort achieved its best ever results in the International Bacca-laureate Diploma when the results were released in July with an im-pressive score of 37 out of a possible 45, which is equivalent to three A* grades and one A grade at A2 level with an average UCAS point score of 534.

The highest performing A2 pupils were:

Miles Edwards (A*, A*, A*, A*, English at Cambridge) – Eastbourne

Katy Fischbacher (A*, A*, A*, A*, Medicine at Cambridge) – Pulbor-ough, Sussex

Peggy Hughes (A*, A*, A*, A*, Gap Year) – Amberley, Sussex

Tiffany Chan (A*, A*, A*, A*, A, Finance at LSE) – Hong Kong

Imogen Muir (A*, A*, A*, A, Nat-ural Sciences at Cambridge) – Exeter

Dara Adedayo (A*, A*, A, A Com-puter Science at Birmingham) - Middlesex

Efosa Ayanru (A*, A*, A, Engi-neering at UCL) - Nigeria

Rydan Giraudy (A*, A*, A, Chem-istry at UCL) - Hampshire

Chania Livesey-Clare (A*, A*, A, Biology at Imperial) - Brighton

Zachary Moxon (A*, A*, A, Music at Cambridge) - Birmingham

Excellent performances by the IB scholars included six who scored over 40 points. These were Da-vid Reckers (42), Lucy Hindmarsh (42), Ulrika Breme (41), Esther So-rooshian (41), Safia Sangster (40) and Tony Lam (40). Their excellent

results have enabled them to accept courses at Durham, KCL, Leeds, and Imperial.

Katy Fischbacher from Pulbor-ough, who will study medicine at Cambridge after her outstand-ing four A* results at A level, says her inspiration comes from tennis champion Roger Federer. She said: “He has inspired me to work hard irrespective of how well I’m doing, to be gracious in defeat and humble in victory. Last November Federer received the Stefan Edberg Sports-manship award, as voted for by oth-er players; I hope that in the future

I too will have an attitude that gains respect from others in my field.”

The Art Department , which teaches the Cambridge Pre-U specification, achieved outstand-ing results again this year with two D1 grades, the Distinction 1 being a prestigious achievement in the Pre-U and equivalent to an A**.

Paul Deller, Head of Art at Christ’s Hospital, said: “To achieve a Dis-tinction 1, the highest award avail-able on the Cambridge Pre-U course and the equivalent of an A** at A level, is an outstanding achieve-ment. To receive two D1 grades in one year is remarkable. Yelena Aleksic, Central Saint Martins, Art Foundation and Olivia Williamson, Falmouth University, Art Founda-tion, both worked incredibly hard and showed huge dexterity in a wide range of mediums.”

John Franklin, Head Master at Christ’s Hospital, said: “We have a strong record of attainment at Christ’s Hospital and this is an-other excellent year for our leavers. We are proud that the hard work of the pupils and staff has paid off so handsomely. Our school leav-ers take with them the confidence and the skills that they will need to achieve success at university and beyond.”

Zac Moxon, who will be studying music at Cambridge with a Choral Scholarship, said: “I don’t think any other school could have prepared me better for university.”

Students at Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form College achieved a pass rate of over 99 per cent for the third year running.

Headteacher Nick Wergan said he was delighted to announce another ex-cellent set of A level results.

Mr Wergan said” We are yet again immensely proud of our fantastic Sixth Form students whose hard work and determination has produced the out-standing outcomes they deserve.

“A pass rate of over 99% from a co-hort of 210 students for the third con-secutive year is a measure of this suc-cess, with over a quarter of our results at the highest A or A* level and 51% at B Grade or higher.

“Given the national context of fl uc-tuating results, and the changes to linear testing, it is incredibly pleasing to see our high standards again main-tained. In 28 of our A level subjects, the

pass rate was 100%. “A-levels are tough qualifi cations -

and I am immensely proud of how well our students have achieved at this level again.

“This is a mark of their commit-ment, sheer hard work and the dedi-cated support from their great teach-ers.”

Mr Wergan added that the school was impressed with the high achieve-ments of its very academically able students.

Max Binkle had the highest attain-ment with 3A* and 2A grades which secured him a place at the University in Munich to study Physics.”

Six students attained 4 A* and A grades. Tom Halmos is going to Im-perial College to read Biochemistry, Jennifer Mason will also be at Impe-rial College to read Mathematics with a year in Europe, Jamie Luxford will study

The University of Bristol is also the destination for Head Boy, Ross Cusdin who with 2 A* grades

Steyning Grammar scores 99 per cent hat-trick on results dayand 1 at A will study English. Amanda Chan goes to Cardiff University to read Architecture. STEM subjects are the chosen route for many of these out-standing achievers, Ellen Winter to the University of Southampton for Marine Biology with a year in industry, Eden Shaw will also be studying Biology at the University of Bath whilst her sister Adelaide progresses to the University of Bristol to study Pharmacology with a year in industry. Steyning signifi -cantly out performs the national take-up for STEM subjects; 24% of our Sixth Form students take 3 or more STEM A levels, with 40% of these students be-ing female. Lisa Klawitter will be at the University of Bristol to study Psychol-ogy, Molly Allwright to the University of Exeter for Anthropology and Zoe Yeend to the University of Southamp-ton for Biochemistry. Marina Crisp and Hester Toovey both gained 1A* and 2A grades, they are making post results applications along with Head Girl Olivia Cleary who was in receipt of 3A grades and a B at A level. Deputy Head Boy William Carey will com-mence his Musical Theatre course at Guildford School of Acting following his 3 A grades.

In Further Mathematics and Math-ematics, 31 students obtained an A* or A grade. The equivalent fi gures for Chemistry and Biology were both 17 and 18 students respectively. Else-where in the curriculum, there was a 100% pass rate in the BTEC National Diploma in Sport with all grades at Merit or Distinction and in Music Practitioner where again all grades were at Merit or Distinction, equating to A*-B grades. Exem-plary results in Creative Arts with 16 entrants gaining A*-B grades in Art and 14 in Photography, many of whom will be starting on Art Foundation courses at lo-cal colleges this September. Olivia Foley takes up a prestigious place at the University of the Arts in London for Fashion Photography following an A* in this subject at A level.

The sixth form college has been the only state provider in West Sussex for the International Baccalaureate. It says its fi fth cohort of 17 students achieved exceptional results with an aver-age points score of 35 and over fi ve grades above this year’s worldwide average. Harry Diserens attained an exceptional 42 points, progressing to Birmingham University to read Lib-eral Arts and Sciences, Charlotte Gis-bourne, with 41 points will be reading Physics with a year in Europe at Impe-rial and Benjamin Knee with a total of 39 points will be studying Medicine at

Leeds University. Mr Wergan said: Alongside these,

there are many other excellent sets of results, including many which represent real achievements for the students concerned, even though they may not hit the headlines. As a comprehensive school we also pride ourselves on off ering opportunity as widely as possible. We are equally proud of all our students who have worked extremely hard. Our dedicat-ed teachers and support staff all play their part in supporting the students through their most challenging peri-ods in education.

“As one of only 38 State Boarding Schools in the UK, Sixth Form Col-lege boarders at Steyning demon-strated that they have already made a successful transition to independent learning and living with progression routes to UK and overseas universities with others taking up deferred places following gap year placements.

“There were also excellent perfor-mances in the AS examinations by our Y12 students, suggesting an equally promising group for next year’s A level, BTEC National and Music Practitioner. At AS level the following students attained 4 or more grades at A; At-ticus Albright, Matthew Cheung, Ro-sie Dommett, Mehmed Mattias, Mark Nader, India Nathan, Ben O’Brien, Ellie Tosey, and Calum White. Year 12

students have laid excel-lent foundations for

Students at Central Sussex College throw breakfast after 98 per cent pass

Students and staff at Central Sussex College threw a celebration break-fast after achieving a pass rate of nearly 100 per cent.

They marked the occasion with a special continental breakfast includ-ing bucks fi zz, fresh juice and a range of tasty pastries, after achieving an overall pass rate of 98%.

This year more students than ever before, 73%, achieved high grades of A* to C, with many moving on to top UK universities including, Oxford, Im-perial College London, Kings College London and Exeter to name a few.

Among this year’s high achiev-ers was Greg Henderson, 18, from Haywards Heath. He was awarded three A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, achieving an astounding 100% in two out of the three subjects.

Greg has been accepted to study Phys-ics at the University of Oxford.

Another high-fl yer was Yann New-by, 18, also from Haywards Heath.

Yann achieved an A* in Chemistry and two As in Biology and Maths, al-lowing him to go on to Oxford Univer-sity to study Biological Sciences.

Principal Sarah Wright said of the success of the Haywards Heath cam-pus students: “This year’s A Level results refl ect the hard work of our talented students and the dedica-tion and expertise of our excellent staff . Our state-of-the-art facilities are fully complete at our Haywards Heath campus which is enabling us to broaden our curriculum off er. This year’s results really demonstrate our growing success as a provider of post-sixteen education.”

All signs are good for these students

Students at Farlington School earned a 100 per pass rate and de-lighted their head teacher.

Louise Higson, said of the Hor-sham school’s A level results: “An-other 100% pass rate for Farlington. With 58% of all grades at A/A* and 35% of girls achieving straight A*/A grades, there is much cause for cel-ebration. University destinations

include Durham, Exeter, Oxford and Warwick, with girls studying cours-es ranging from Classics to Zoology.

“I am delighted that the hard work and commitment of the girls have been so well rewarded. Com-petition for university places is strong, and the pressure on young people is greater than ever; it is wonderful to see this group of

ambitious young women taking the next step and following their dreams. They have bright futures ahead of them.

“My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers - their passion and commitment are key in pro-viding the excellent teaching and support which enable the girls to achieve these outstanding results.”

Farlington earns another 100 per cent year

Scarecrows come out of the fi eld and into the limelight for Sat-urday’s Warnham Village Summer Show.

Residents have been busy preparing the eye-catching creations for this week’s judging, which is part of the event.

W i n n e r s get a meal for four people at the Greets Inn. Judging was on Thursday and the winners will be an-nounced at the show.

The show afternoon starts at 2pm, and there will be a fun dog show sponsored by Farthing Vets at

the cricket fi eld from noon until 4pm , with registrations taken from noon

on the Saturday. Dogs will also show off their agil-

ity in their own ring in displays of skill.

On the creative side there will be c o m p e t i t i o n s for vegetables, fl owers, bak-ing , photos by children, arts and crafts. Re-

freshments will include a BBQ and

afternoon teas.It will be the fi rst

summer show since the village hall was re-opened

after refurbishment and improve-ments costing about £200,000.

The original village hall was opened in 1892, and in Victorian and Edward-ian times village shows such as this were major events in the community.

In 1973 a new village hall was opened, and the latest version, the refurbished hall, was offi cially re-opened last November.

The summer show is organised to continue to promote interest in such traditional events.

Pictured are a scarecrow and dog showing agility skills.

Snake in well prompts warning from the RSPCA

A snake stuck down a 20ft down a well at Horsham has prompted the RSPCA to warn landowners to be aware of dangers to wildlife

A member of the public contacted the charity after spotting the snake swimming around in the bottom of a well shaft on Hampers Lane.

Animal Collection Offi cer Julie Par-sons attended the rescue where she found that the grass snake had been there for some time and was unable to climb out by himself.

The well shaft, which had a diame-ter of about 10ft and about 20ft deep, was covered by a broken gate and mostly hidden underneath brambles.

Julie said: “This was a really unu-sual incident - it was a fairly big grass snake, about three-feet long. The shape of the well meant that it was unable to climb out and would not have survived without help.

“The wells appeared to be old, un-used boreholes. The farmer knew they were there but didn’t know they were so deep or exposed.

“A good thing to come out of this incident is that now the danger to wildlife has been highlighted, the wells will be fi lled in to prevent simi-lar incidents from happening in the future. We would urge landowners with similar exposed holes on their land to think about doing similar.

“If a member of the public is ever in doubt about the safety of any ani-mal, anywhere, they should call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.”

As Julie’s attempts to catch the grass snake with a swan hook and a snake ring proved unsuccessful, for health and safety reasons, the Fire Service Technical Rescue Team was called out and managed to get the snake out of the well shaft using a carp net with an extendable pole. The grass snake was then released into the safety of the woods after the in-cident on July 4.

Grass snakes are non-venomous, extremely timid and will sometimes pretend to be dead if they feel threat-ened.

Sussex brewer scoops national beer award

Sussex Brewer, Dark Star, has won a National Award at the Great British Beer Festival, held in London.

Their ‘Revelation’ beer was voted best beer in the ‘Strong Ale’ category in the Champion Beer of Britain com-petition. The 5.7% IPA style beer won through from local then regional heats, before being declared National Champion Strong Ale.

James Cuthbertson, director at Dark

Star, said: “It’s great testimony to the work the brewing team have been do-ing, not only to innovate with new beers, but making sure that our per-manent beers, like Revelation and Hophead, are the very best they can be, all of the time. The Sussex brewing scene has never been stronger, with so many great brewers like Downland, Burning Sky and of course, the legend-ary Harveys, to mention but a few.”

Local entrepreneur creates a free website that supports local businessHorsham based entrepreneur, An-tony Stonham has created a website that is fun and engaging and sup-ports local businesses and commu-nities in a way never seen before.

In just over 18 months Local Puzzle players visited over 2,000 independ-ent businesses across 450 towns in the UK and spent well over half a mil-lion pounds with them. As well as the retailers seeing an increase in profi t, players have pocketed over £40,000.

Players collect points by shopping at independent stores, emailing a copy of their receipt and taking part in promotional activities. Retailers don’t have to purchase any new equipment and are entered for free, but can be-come “premium retailers” by profi t sharing with the Sussex based com-pany. This enables them to create tar-geted campaigns that drive additional consumers to their store.

Antony Stonham, owner of Local Puzzle said: “My mission is to make sure that as Local Puzzle grows, the majority of the money it makes goes back to the people involved and our customers, it would be cool to make a huge global business out of being gen-erous on local level.”

Charities, local schools and com-munity clubs are also included in An-thony’s plans, with a further £6,500 being donated at the end of the year. Players win “votes” that decide where the charitable donations are placed,

ensuring that the causes involved are popular with the people who generate the money.

Lucinda from Westons Farm Shop, Itchingfi eld said: “We joined Lo-cal Puzzle as premium members in January and it's been a huge success for us. We contacted Anthony after so many of our customers asked us to sign up. When he explained the scheme it was a no-brainer decision. Since then we've noticed a major rise in new customers who are coming from across Horsham and from win-dow shoppers who are now coming in to buy. The trade fi gures on our trade

dashboard speak for themselves! Lo-cal Puzzle is fantastic marketing for a very reasonable price and a great win-win scheme.”

The reporting feature also allows retailers real-time information about their shoppers, something that has been met with great enthusiasm. Ian, from Taylors Dry Cleaners, Horsham refl ected: “Local Puzzle is a fun way to generate extra income for local businesses. I can monitor how many customers I’ve had and how much they’ve spent through my own ‘Trade Dashboard’, it seems to me like a great idea for everyone involved.”

Singleton and East Dean Women’s Institute (WI) – the first WI to be formed in England – will host this once in a lifetime event on Tues-day 8th September 2015 at the Weald & Downland Open Air Mu-seum, Singleton.

The Museum is pleased to wel-come Janice Langley, Chair of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, who will attend the cen-tenary celebrations.

100 Not Out will showcase eve-rything that the WI does best, with activities running throughout the Museum site on this special day. WIs from West Sussex will cre-ate individual table-top displays in the Museum’s Downland Gridshell building, each commemorating the year in which they were founded.

Deborah Harwood, owner of The Textile Space and winner of West Sussex Woman of the Year in Arts 2014, will be presenting The Power of Creating, two inspirational semi-nars at midday and 2pm, on creative ideas, thoughts and plans.

Changes in how we live will feature with two full sized rooms made up in the style of 1915 and 2015 to show in detail what huge changes have come about within our homes.

The Museum and the WIThe WI movement in Britain be-

gan in 1915 under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Soci-ety (AOS). The AOS set up a Wom-en’s Institute sub-committee, to which Lady Denman was appointed as chair. The first English branch of the WI opened in Singleton, West Sussex, in November 1915. The original meeting place was a pub called The Fox at Charlton near Sin-gleton and East Dean. The pub still exists today is now named The Fox Goes Free. Sussex is also the old-est County Federation – formed in 1917, divided into West and East in 1919 – with its area covering rural areas from the South Downs to the coast. By 1917, 137 WIs had opened across Britain.

The Weald & Downland Museum and its local WIs have always had strong links – with ten local in-stitutes contributing toward the founding of the Museum in 1967. The Museum is proud to play host to the WI’s centenary celebrations.

Tickets and how to participateTickets for WI members to attend

the event are just £9 per person and must be booked in advance. Tick-ets are also available on the day, priced at standard admission – see the Museum’s website for details. Tickets for Deborah Harwood's talks must be bought separately from Kate Shaw on 01243 811203 and are priced at £2.

‘Aerotoxic’ launch meeting huge success

Horsham Park Barn hosted a meet-ing that discussed the progress for upcoming fi lm ‘Aerotoxic’ between 7pm until 10pm on Monday even-ing, August 10.

Multi-award winning company Fact Not Fiction Films, who claimed the Best Small Business in Sussex Award, in both 2009 and 2011, is producing the feature length docu-mentary.

Producer and former airline cap-tain, Tristan Loraine said: “This is the ultimate documentary needed to inspire change. We are facing a scandal of epic proportions.

“Our last documentary ‘Shady Lady’ (2013) was an Academy Award Contender and we believe ‘Aerotox-ic’ will have an even greater public

appeal.”The meeting served to outline the

future development of Aerotoxic and provide more information on the fi lm’s objectives.

All aircraft, with the exception of the Boeing 787, have a design fl aw that puts anyone who boards a plane at risk from exposure to a complex cocktail of hazardous chemicals when the air they breathe becomes contaminated. The eff ects of expo-sure to contaminated air were fi nally defi ned in 1999 as ‘Aerotoxic Syn-drome’, despite having been docu-mented since the early 1950s.

These chemicals can be extremely harmful and are both a health and fl ight safety risk. Cancer rates are reported to be 10 times over the na-tional average among British Air-ways cabin crew. Contaminated air exposure can be disastrous when exposed to those who are medically vulnerable, specifi cally pregnant women and their unborn children. Fact Not Fiction Films plan to unveil

this information in the upcoming fi lm.

Beth Moran from the Aerotoxic production department said:

“I’m really excited to be part of a dynamic team that’s working so hard to unveil an issue that could impact anybody who fl ies.

“This fi lm is so important because it’s all about making air travel safer. It’s incredible to be a part of some-thing that could potentially improve the quality of the air on aircraft.”

The investigative documentary will tell Tristan Loraine’s journey from training to be an airline pilot in the early 1980s in the USA, to dis-covering aviation’s darkest secret. In 2001 he was informed by a colleague about the eff ects of Aerotoxic Syn-drome and in 2006, was ill health retired as a consequence of inhaling toxic fumes on the aircraft he fl ew. Tristan subsequently retrained at the National Film and Television School and set up Fact Not Fiction Films Ltd to raise awareness of the issue.

The documentary will also reveal evidence and conduct exclusive in-terviews with globally respected scientists, that will provide deeper insight into a problem that increas-ingly needs solving.

A cabin crew member who attend-ed the meeting but did not want to be named said:

“I think it’s outrageous and in-credibly worrying that in this day and age we aren’t being warned about the potential health risks.

“You could fall really sick and not even realise what caused it, you’d probably end up blaming some dodgy food you ate while on holiday. ”

24 Hours from Tulsa: Rembering Gene Pitney (1940-2006)During the 70’s/80’s at a time when tribute shows were unheard of, Tommy Carey toured his Gene Pitney show with amazing success.

STEAMER TRADING

The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business ourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners

decided to retire. When we had nished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

PETs POSTSponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about caring for pet bunny rabbits. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email [email protected]. We hope you enjoy the read.

abbi moonRSPCA

My daughter, Summer, has been asking for a pet. She asked for kit-tens or puppies.

I explained why I didn’t feel a cat or a dog was the right pet for us, plus there is the small issue of my animal allergy which developed whilst I was pregnant with Sum-mer. Whilst I don’t mind taking an-ti-histamines when I volunteer at the RSPCA cattery in Roff ey, having to take them just to live in my own home would be a step too far.

Summer thought about this,

then came to me, “Mummy, do rabbits live outside?” Innocently, I answered that some live indoors and some outdoors, it depends on the rabbits. She had me. “We can get rabbits then Mummy!” Within days, the names for the rabbits had been chosen and, a year later, she still talks excitedly that we are go-ing to get rabbits soon.

Rabbits aren’t an ideal pet for children. They have very complex needs so aren’t easy to look after and they can live for 12 years; which means Summer could leave home before they do!

And that’s the important thing; pets should not be thought of as being just for children; as Sum-mer’s parents we are responsible

for making sure they are happy and healthy and so they need to be part of our family. So, has the our fam-ily got what it takes to keep rabbits happy?

I started doing my research on the RSPCA website, rspca.org.uk/rabbits. The diet seems easy - hay available at all times, leafy green veg, some rab-bit pellets and con-stant access to fresh water.

My biggest worry is cre-

ating the right environment. As well as a weatherproof shelter (usually a hutch or playhouse), they need permanent access to a large exercise area so they can run around and have fun. They need to have lots of enrichment, such as platforms and toys as well as places i n which they can each

hide and areas in which they

can dig. We also need to make sure

they are safe and s e c u r e f r o m any po-tential

predators. We’re having to be creative on

how we fi t this into our garden. Rabbit housing has developed over the years as people realised a hutch is not enough and we’re planning to use special rabbit tunnels to con-nect the shelter to the exercise area to make the most of the space we have.

Rabbits are sociable and normal-ly prefer to be with another rab-bit, so we are getting two. Luckily, where to get the rabbits from isn’t an issue! Although RSPCA Sussex North doesn’t do rabbit rehoming, plenty of our neighbouring RSPCA branches do, so it’s just a short hop to rspca.org.uk/fi ndapet to fi nd the newest members of our family.

Some stress in the lives of dogs and cats is normal, but it can be-come excessive and possibly lead to behaviour problems.

Change can be a major source of stress for many pets – they can find it difficult to adapt to variations in their environment or routine. Like us some pets adapt to a change much more easily than others.

Many common situations are stressful for our pets:

Moving houseNew members of the household

e.g. new pet or babyMulti-cat householdsSudden noise e.g. fireworks,

thunderKennel or cattery visitGroomingTravelBeing left home aloneAnother cat moving into the ter-

ritoryHow do you know if your pet is

stressed? Our pets cannot tell us how they

are feeling and coping – but they can change their behaviour and let us know in this way. There are many different ways pets can show stress, and some are more easily recog-nised than others.

Stress can sometimes be difficult to recognise as some cats and dogs show stress by subtle withdrawal behaviours. They may interact less, hide away and perhaps stop going into certain parts of the house. Cats may also rest in higher places (e.g. top of the wardrobe instead of their usual chair) to feel more secure.

Common expressions of stress include:

House soilingHabits such as excessive licking

and groomingChanged demeanour or postureChanges in the use of their envi-

ronment e.g. stops entering a cer-tain room

Increased hiding or resting in a higher place (cats)

Increased or decreased interac-tion with other people or other pets

Changes in appetite, sleep pat-terns and play

What can you do if you think your pet is stressed?

Contact your veterinary practice and make an appointment for your pet to be seen. A vet or nurse will assess if the behaviours shown by your pet are caused by a medical problem which requires treatment. This may involve tests, e.g. blood or urine tests.

They can then discuss manage-ment options with you which may include behaviour modification techniques.

There are a number of natural products, proven to help manage stress in dogs and cats and help them adapt to change. These prod-ucts are described as nutraceuticals and are not usually associated with any side effects. They are normally palatable, easy to give with food and only usually need to be given once daily.

Most behaviour problems will also benefit from behaviour modifi-cation techniques. A member of the practice team or behaviourist can often advise a programme which is right for your pet – this may include referral to a behaviour specialist.

Look at the signs - could your pet be stressed?

Dusty, a 12 year old Siberian husky was presented to Arun Vets after having swallowed whole an entire corn-on-the-cob, pilfered from the kitchen bin.

Upon examination Edric Cross, MRCVS could not determine if the cob was stuck in Dusty’s oesophagus or stomach, so X-rays were needed to identify where the cob was located to prevent future complications for Dusty.

The X-rays showed that the cob was stuck in the stomach and sur-gery had to be carried out to remove it as it was too big to travel safely through the intestines.

Dusty was taken straight in to theatre for surgery. This involved making an incision into the abdomi-nal wall, and then a further incision in the stomach where the cob was located. Once removed, the stomach was flushed and closed back up.

This type of surgery is common in Veterinary practices because so many animals like to eat things they

shouldn’t! When having to remove a foreign body from the abdomen (or for any other number of abdominal problems) we call this an explora-tory laparotomy or ‘ex-lap’.

The ex-lap is a large incision made into the abdomen as a way to visu-alize the organs and determine the source of pain or the extent of injury. Further surgery is then carried out to rectify any problems.

The risks of this surgery are very high because the gut is full of bacte-ria, and if organs rupture during sur-gery or internal sutures break down then contamination and infection can occur. This is why it is impor-tant to keep the procedure as sterile as possible and to have antibiotics post-surgery.

Dusty went home that night with pain medication, antibiotics and strict rest to make sure his internal sutures did not break down.

A week on and Dusty is recovering well. Let’s hope he keeps out of the bin from now on!

Are you market ready?Tim Cattini, Manager of Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents in Horsham, gives some advice about getting ready for the autumn property marketAugust is traditionally a quiet time in the property market.

With so many families on holi-day buying and selling homes takes a back step. But for some this is a very important time. This is the month that can be spent getting ready for the autumn mar-ket - as September is the month when things usually hot up again.

Getting one’s own house in order has never been more im-portant. Good condition and ap-pearance are crucial to getting top price and beating the competition to the best buyers. Yes, selling property is a competition. There are other houses and apartments that are vying for buyers’ atten-tion. So spending time and even some money in preparation can be very important.

Tastes are changing all the time. What is in one year is out the next. When this relates to clothes keeping up-to-date is relatively easy. But property is a diff erent matter altogether. However there are ways to ensure that a house is market ready without too much expense.

So here are a few golden rules when preparing your property for the market:

Debug: All rooms should be kept particularly clean when buyers are on the prowl – especially kitchens and bathrooms.

De-clutter: it is vital to make the space look as large as possible. There should be a place for books, magazines, clothes, kitchen utensils, etc. and all these things should be in their rightful places. Removing just one piece of furni-ture from a room can often make a big impact to the sense of space.

De-colour: Gloss black, orange and purple walls may be some people’s idea of great interior de-sign. But many buyers would run a mile. Repaint in white or light grey – it looks clean, off ends no one and makes rooms look larger. The uplift in value should far out-weigh the cost of the work and materials.

De-smell: we are used to our own house odours but others aren’t. It’s best to remove spicy foods from the menu for a while. Open the windows; buy fl owers; make some fresh coff ee and per-haps light a good candle or two before potential buyers arrive.

De-noise: Does your property sound good? Is there loud mu-sic playing or an off -putting tel-evision in the background? Turn them off . Are there young chil-dren screaming? Turn them off too. Let peace reign. Or if there is ambient noise from outside such as traffi c or aircraft play some low level calm music to sooth the ear and defl ect attention.

A helping hand from your friends at FABRICA

Award winning developer FAB-RICA by A2Dominion is currently off ering buyers of selected 5 bed-room homes at Marringdean Acres in Billingshurst a helping hand.

For all reservations taken before 21st September FABRICA will pay your stamp duty in full saving buy-ers up to £16,750! Viewing is highly recommended of these luxuriously appointed, thoughtfully designed homes which are ready to move with high quality fl ooring.

This prestigious new develop-ment in sought after Marringdean Road has proved extremely popular with 90% of the homes in their fi rst phase already sold. Buyers have been attracted to the level of speci-fi cation and fi nish along with the traditionally crafted exteriors that blend seamlessly with contempo-rary interior design.

FABRICA (which means ‘skil-

fully produced) is the private arm of A2Dominion who build many af-fordable homes in carefully consid-ered locations across London and the South East, on developments that they subsequently manage.

Rosie Nesbitt Group Sales & Marketing Director for FABRICA explains “Unlike most develop-ers, our commitment to customers continues long after the fi nal brick is laid because we both manage and maintain the developments that we build.”

For further information on the stylish 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes currently available at Marringdean Acres priced from £340,000 to £535,000 please contact the Sales & Marketing Suite which is open daily from 10am to 5pm on 01403 784 875 or visit www.marringdeana-cres.co.uk (Sat Nav Reference RH14 9HD).

Finally don’t forget the fi rst impression. You will never have a second chance. Most unkempt front gardens precede an un-kempt house. Cut the grass. Prune the plants. Hide the dustbin. Store away the red plastic slide that had faded to pink in the sun.

Follow these rules, price sen-sibly and you will be on your way to sweet-smelling selling success.

You will be gone long before your fellow sellers - ever wake up and smell the coff ee.

Put another way, if you don’t love where you live no one else will! If you’d like some advice on selling your home in the cur-rent local property market, please contact Tim at Guy Leonard and Co on 014034 248222 or email [email protected].

Horsham parkrun attracts hundreds each week

As the Horsham parkrun races towards its fi rst anniversary the free to enter – open to all – vol-unteer organised - weekly run continues to grow from strength to strength.

Last week, at the height of the holiday period and amid uncertain weather, the parkrun attracted 208 runners, 20 of who were fi rst tim-ers and 52 more achieving personal best times: the week previous a re-

cord 340 runners had taken part. The Horsham parkrun takes

place every Saturday in Horsham Park at 9.00am and is run over a 5k course, intended for all ages and capabilities, and contained com-pletely within Horsham Park.

First timers are required to com-plete a one off on line entry form found on the parkrun website; once registered and armed with a print-ed off barcode all that is needed is to turn up and take part.

Tomorrow, August 22, the parkrun elephant that is part of Horsham Rotary Club’s ‘Elephan-tastic’ trail and is situated in The District Post offi ce window during the week, will be paying a visit to

the park during the run. September 5 marks the Horsham parkrun’s landmark occasion of its fi rst an-niversary and the organisers and regular runners would welcome new faces along to either take part, help with the organising or to sim-ply watch and get a feel for what it is all about.

After the run coff ee, and the odd cake or two, is enjoyed in the Con-servatory Cafe so why not take up the chance to have some fun and meet some people while improving your own fi tness.

The parkrun website to register at is www.parkrun.org.uk/horsh-am and in addition there is a face-book page – Horsham parkrun

Jolyon returns to free practice at Belgium’s Spa circuitMotor SportDave Smith – Sports Editor

Jolyon Palmer will return from the Formula One season’s summer break by taking part in the free practice sessions at the Belgium Grand Prix taking place on the fa-mous Spa-Francorchamps circuit this weekend.

The Southwater driver will com-plete the 90 minute session in his role as the Lotus F1 Team’s third and reserve driver.

Jolyon has driven the team’s 2015 car, the E23 Hybrid, in the last three FP1 sessions, starting with the Red Bull Ring in Austria, his home race in Britain at Silverstone and then the Hungaroring in Hungary.

Palmer has raced on the famous 4.352-mile circuit in Spa a number of times before and the 2014 GP2 Champion fi nished on the podium at the track with a third-place fi n-ish in last year's sprint race, on his way to claiming the championship

title.Palmer said: "After a few weeks

of summer break, I can't wait to be back in the car at Spa, which is such a legendary track. It is a circuit that I know well and hopefully it will suit the E23 Hybrid more than the last couple of races."

Following Belgium, in the next race in the Formula One calendar on September 4, Palmer will com-pete in free practice at the Italian Grand Prix on the famous Monza circuit. Jolyon Palmer will be back in action at Spa

The Southwater driver will complete the 90 minute session in his role as the Lotus F1 Team’s third driver

BowlsJane Gray – Pulborough BC

In the closing weeks of the 2015 season, Pulborough BC has a busy timetable of friendlies to play, both home and away.

First up this week Pulborough played host to Horsham Park. 4 triples played in the Afternoon sun and by halfway, the scores were close, with 2 rinks to each team.

Horsham fought hard to turn the scores around and managed to win on 1 rink by 6 points, but the other 3 Pulborough teams were less forgiving, with top rink for Pulborough going to Skip, Jan Barnes, with lead, Derek Swaf-fi eld and number 2 Treacle, 25/13. Mick Ralph and team were close on their heels with an impressive 21/14 score line and Colin Andrews and team, pulled it back from 8/8 at halfway to 20/14 after a 6 on end 11. Final score - Pulborough 78 – 59 Horsham Park.

Next to face Pulborough at home were Henfi eld. 4 rinks played 21 ends of impressive bowls, with

just Len Adsett and team being held to a draw at 16/16 after their opponents pulled 5 shots out of the bag on the last 2 ends to lev-el the scores. Skip, Ivan Salmon and team, snatched victory from

the jaws of defeat to move from 2 shots down on end 18 to 3 ahead on end 19 and victorious 18/17 on end 21.

Paul Day, Craig Jupp, Roger Jupp and George Lewis only allowed their opponents to win 7/21 ends and just 14 shots compared to Pul-borough's 31; some heavy scoring

saw them take the lead from end 3. Skip John Brown, with lead, Derek Swaffi eld, number 2, Mike Rich-ards and number 3 Chris Ether-ington, were ahead from the start and fi nished with an end in hand 36/14 and top rink! The fi nal score was Pulborough 101 - 61 Henfi eld.

Lancing played host to Pulbor-ough on a humid Sunday After-noon, with acrobatics from East-bourne's air display over-head and some skilful manoeuvres from the players on the green.

Out of 5 triples, 3 went in Pul-borough's favour, with top rink going to skip, Len Adsett, with lead Melvin Green and number 2, Arthur Varndell, after a 6 on end 8 doubled their score and kept them well ahead for the rest of the game to fi nish 27/10.

Paul Day and team used the tea at halfway to re-fuel and re-focus with their best bowls being saved for last, to achieve 21/8 at full time. John Brown and team won 20/10 and Malcolm Gray and team pulled out a 7 on end 14 to pull lev-el and fi nish 16 shots a piece. Final score Lancing 58 – 94 Pulborough.

Hat-trick of wins for Pulborough throughout busy week

Paul Day, Craig Jupp, Roger Jupp and George Lewis only allowed their opponents to win 7/21 ends and just 14 shots compared to Pulborough’s 31

Pulborough had 3 wins during the week

In a rain spoilt week, Billingshurst sail past Southwater

BowlsKeith Barraclough – Billingshurst BC

With the scheduled home match with Maltravers cancelled due to continuous heavy rain it was a qui-eter week for Billingshurst.

Billingshurst 77 – 40 Southwater Billingshurst hosted Southwater

for an afternoon match and right from start put the visitors under pressure who by half-time were 13 shots adrift. Southwater fared no better during the second session as ‘Hurst forged ahead to win by 37 shots and claim a “home and away” double over their local opponents. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Robin Clark, Betty Weller & Alan

Readshaw (+31).Robin Clark, Betty Weller & Alan

Readshaw won 33-2Marion Clark, Barry Gilbert &

John Bennett lost 14-16 June Bennett, Stan Morgan &

Geoff Weller won 15-11 Chris Laker, Roy Lawrence & Alan

Knight won 15-11Autumn Cup - 2015The 12 entrants were drawn into

2 groups of 6 with each member playing the others in their group a game of 4 ends. The 10 end fi nal be-tween group winners Barry Gilbert and John Bennett resulted in an 8-7 victory for the former. Group run-ners-up were Alan Knight and June Bennett.

Crablands claw back against StorringtonBowlsJohn Wharmby – Storrington BC

The visit of Crablands B.C. mid-week piled on the pressure for Storrington to climb up the league table.

Paul Leatherbarrow’s game seemed to augur the right result as his team easily pulled ahead to win 25 – 10, while Peter Newman’s team struggled to hold their oppo-nents to a narrow win by 2 shots. David Ogley’s team also seemed to be holding its position, drawing 8 – 8 after 7 ends, but they slowly lost ground to fi nish 5 shots down.

This meant that Howard White’s team could play a relaxed game for Storington to take the major points. At 8 all, the pace seemed to be going Storrington’s way. But then relaxation changed to dor-mancy, as they lost the next 15 shots.

By then there was no hold-ing Crablands who took another 9 shots while Storrington only man-aged 4, resulting in a fi nal game score of 12 – 32. Final score Stor-rington 74 – 82 Crablands and 4 – 6 league points.

Mike Obrien, R. Naldrett, Harry Kendall & Paul Leatherbarrow won 25-10

Neil Tewsley, Richard Pettet, John Rimmer & Peter Newman won 20-18

P. Monk, Geoff Page, Gerry New-man & David Ogley lost 17-22

Christopher Martin-Jenkins pavilion opens

The Christopher Martin-Jenkins Pavilion was opened on Horsham Cricket Club’s John Dew ground by CM-J’s widow Judy and his brother Tim.

At the well attended ceremony Horsham President Hugh Thomas said: “There was an urgent need for a proper pavilion on the John Dew ground and we are deeply grateful to Christopher’s family for making such a signifi cant donation to make it possible. We are also indebted to the dedication of our hard working Treasurer, Colin Mitcham – Colin en-sured that an ECB grant was obtained, funds were raised from members and friends and demanding planning regulations satisfi ed.” Hugh contin-

ued: “This is a special day and a most fi tting memorial to Christopher. He was a great friend and supporter of Horsham Cricket Club, often de-scribing it as one of England’s best grounds and played here as often as he could, as did his sons, notably Robin. Christopher is so sadly missed but it is highly appropriate that his nephew Sam is playing here today in a youth match, continuing the family legacy.”

Responding, CM-J’s brother re-called Christopher’s outstanding contribution to the game, not only as the longest serving Test Match Spe-cial broadcaster and, for many years, Cricket Correspondent of the Times and Telegraph but also author of over 20 books. Tim then added: “Chris-topher was described as the greatest friend cricket ever had - thank you Horsham Cricket Club for giving the family the opportunity to remember him at a place he loved to be.”

Ten year anniversary match this SundayCricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fi nest hour in Horsham Cricket Club’s long history, Paul Baker has organised a special anniversary match - on August 23 2005 Horsh-am won the National Knockout Cup (then known as the Cockspur Cup) at Lord’s.

In a nail-biting last ball victory over Barnt Green, the Midlands team captained by former England player Richard Illingworth, now a fi rst class umpire, Horsham put up 220 for nine in the rain aff ected 40 over match.

They went on to win by three runs when Barnt Green were unable to score nine from the fi nal over, four being needed off the last ball. The cup winning side take on a Horsham Invitation XI this Sunday, starting at 1pm.

The bar will be open throughout the match and there will be an even-ing BBQ to round off the special oc-casion.Horsham's winning 2005 cup team at Lords

Roff ey take the wind from Bexhill’s sails

Saturday August 15 - Sussex Pre-mier LeagueBexhill 168 All Out (56 overs) Rof-fey 172-2 (42 overs)Roff ey won by 8 wickets

Bexhill have been this season’s surprise package, winning eight of their previous 15 games - but, they have been Roff ey’s whipping boys. In June Roff ey won handsomely, bowling them out for 127. This time they fared better but not by much as Roff ey dismissed them for a pal-try 168, a score unlikely to be suf-fi ciently testing. Bexhill opener Shawn Johnson made 65 but there were no other signifi cant contribu-tions, batsmen having no answer to George Fleming’s nagging accu-racy as he took 7-72 in a marathon unchanged 28 over spell, ably sup-ported by Ben Manenti’s 3-29.

Roff ey lost just two wickets in knocking off the runs, Theo Rivers hitting 16 fours in his 91 not out, partnered by Rohit Jagota with an unbeaten 63. Rohit told the District Post: “The ball was moving around – it was cloudy and there was a wet patch on the greenish pitch. The conditions really suited George and he bowled very well. Then, after a useful opening stand Theo and I

fi nished off the job. He richly de-served a century but we didn’t need any more runs!”

East Grinstead won again and head the table with 377 points, Rof-fey retain second spot on 351 but with a game in hand. Unable to play at Horsham after heavy rain had de-feated the covering system, Preston Nomads drop to third on 333, while Horsham remain fi fth – with 305.

Rohit added: “We’ve got a big week-end with two home games. We’re really looking forward to it and are hoping for two wins to boost our championship chances – tomorrow (Saturday August 22) Horsham visit and then on Sunday we take on the Sussex Development XI.”

Billingshurst crash to defeat against MiddletonSaturday August 15 - Sussex Pre-mier LeagueMiddleton 147 All Out (41.1) Bill-ingshurst 64 All Out (28.2 overs)Middleton won by 83 runs

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Billinghurst’s script for this game was to make certain of retaining Premier League status by beating bottom of the table Middleton but they forgot their lines and crashed to a resounding defeat.

Yet, at the innings break Middleton with just three wins from 16 games – one of which was a victory over Bill-ingshurst - were none too confi dent. Billingshurst had won the toss and asked Middleton to bat, the game get-ting underway an hour late after the ground had recovered from recent deluges.

An early wicket fell but at 118-2 and Sean Heather at the crease a demand-ing total seemed inevitable, despite the departure of ever-consistent Jof-fra Archer for 72. But, Sussex second XI’s Abidine Sakande got into his stride, taking 6-34 in partnership with Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi (3-33) as Middleton collapsed, losing their last six wickets for 13 runs. The momen-tum was with Billingshurst but their innings never got into third gear. At

19-1 there was no hint of impending doom but only extras and two bats-men subsequently reached double fi gures, Brandon Hanley being the principal destroyer with 6-15, Hurst sinking almost without trace.

Skipper Ben Williams said: “Abi bowled particularly well for us and they were also impressive with the ball. The wicket was damp and we kept nicking good deliveries but we were too defensive – not positive enough.”

Tomorrow, Saturday, Billingshurst, still sixth but in urgent need of points to stay ahead of the chasing pack, start their diffi cult run in with a visit to perennial contenders Preston No-mads. The following Saturday in their fi nal home game they entertain Rof-fey before visiting Cuckfi eld in the season’s curtain call.

Hornets through to next round after close battle

Sunday August 16 – FA Cup Extra Preliminary RoundHorsham 1 – 0 Lancing

Joe Shelley’s 67th minute pen-alty settled this tight, hard fought match to send Horsham into the next round of the FA Cup where they will travel to play Southern Counties East side Deal Town.

Hornets’ manager Di Paola took a chance on starting Kevin Keehan, who had missed the league victory over Broadbridge Heath through injury. The gamble didn’t pay off however as the midfi elder had to be replaced by Brad Lewis after just six minutes.

The visitors, who had hit 7 goals in their last match, looked dangerous going forward but were limited to a few long range eff orts by the well or-ganised Horsham.

Both teams struggled to create a clear cut goal scoring opportunity during the cagey fi rst half. Samir Hadi fi red an eff ort straight at visi-tors ‘keeper Fidler when he should have done better before a few min-utes before the break Lancing wasted a great opportunity to go ahead when Jake Mills fi red the ball over from

close range with the goal begging.Horsham came out in the second

half the more determined with both Scott Murfi n and Darren Boswell see-ing eff orts go high and wide. Murfi n again had a good chance just under the hour mark but again the normal-ly prolifi c striker fl uff ed his chance. The breakthrough fi nally came just ten minutes after Di Paola had re-placed Hadi with Keiron Pamment. The Hornets substitute was fouled by Dave O’Callaghan in the area leaving captain Joe Shelley to slot the result-ing penalty into the bottom corner of Fidler’s goal. The goal spurred Lanc-ing into a series of attacks on the Horsham goal but keeper Williams had little to bother him other than one good save from the visitors Will Berry. With fi ve minutes remain-ing Horsham could and should have wrapped things up but the misfi ring front man Murfi n again fi red his ef-fort well over the Lancing crossbar.

A late scare was dealt with by the solid Charlie Farmer before the ref-eree’s whistle brought the game to an end giving Horsham two wins on the bounce and a trip down to the tradi-tionally unhappy hunting ground for the Hornets of the Kent coast to face Deal Town in the next round.

Horsham Team: Williams, Dun-can, Storrie, Keehan (Lewis 7), Jones, Farmer, Shelley, Hunt, Murfi n, Hadi (Pamment 57), Boswell (Knee 88). Unused Subs: Chadwick, O’Hagan, Charles.

Sullivan brothers seal FA cup success

Saturday August 15 - Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary RoundHorsham YMCA 2 – 0 AFC Croy-don Athletic

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Second half goals from broth-ers Dan and Nick Sullivan helped Horsham YMCA see off Southern Counties East League outfi t AFC

Croydon Athletic 2-0 in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup last Saturday.

Midfi elder Dan slammed home from close range four minutes after the break, before Nick made sure of the victory with a trademark fi nish midway through the second period, securing Peter Buckland’s side a Preliminary Round tie away to Croy-don’s fellow Southern Counties ri-vals Erith Town in a fortnight’s time.

The YM manager commented: “There was only one team I felt, but maybe I’m wrong, playing foot-ball. Their game was the long ball, looking to split you at the back and go in behind. Once we had settled down and coped with that after the fi rst few minutes, I think that we could still be playing now and they wouldn’t have scored.

“We really seem to have turned a corner as a group and we seem to be so much more intelligent in our football. Again today, we really had to work hard. Last season we might have found ourselves now going up to Thornton Heath on Tuesday night, or worse, so I’m really pleased. I’m pleased with the entire atmosphere and camaraderie at the place.

“I was a bit concerned at half time. I thought that we matched each oth-er pretty much all over the pitch, toe-to-toe, although we did defi -nitely create more opportunities.

“I said to the players at half time that they would not score if we car-ried on as we were. It was just a question of when we were going to score. The lads showed good com-posure, good togetherness and good discipline again.

“We’re doing OK in the league, al-though I know there have only been two games and no medals are hand-ed out in August, and now we’re through to the next round of the FA Cup.”

Howie signs football for competition winner

Seven year old Kira Brooks was thrilled to meet Howie the Hor-net at last weekend’s Horsham v Lancing cup tie.

Kira won the colouring compe-tition held by Horsham FC at the recent Sparks in the Park and as a result was invited along to the

match with her family. In addition to the family being given a tour of Gorings Mead and enjoying some hospitality courtesy of the club Kira was given some kit and a football signed by Howie at a presentation that took place on the pitch prior to kick off .

Don’t Forget!Plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles can now go in your recycling bins

Horsham District Council now collects plastic pots, tubs and trays in your blue-top bin.

A sustainable market for this type of plastic has now been established making the recycling system for Horsham district residents even easier.

With this improvement to residents’ recycling collection we can now take clean plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles from all around the house – not just the kitchen.

For example:

• All plastic bottles e.g. milk and other drinks bottles, detergent and other household cleaning bottles, personal care and baby care product bottles

• Plastic pots for yoghurt, soup, noodles etc

• Pots containing moisturising creams, hair gel etc

• Ice cream and margarine tubs

• Ready meal clean plastic trays

• Punnet style containers that hold fruit/vegetables, such as mushrooms or grapes

But remember, all recyclable items still need to be placed in your blue-top bins clean, dry and loose; not tied up in plastic bags.

At the moment we still CAN NOT accept plastic toys, plastic bags, plastic plant pots or any other type of plastic that is not a food tray, plastic bottle or tub.
