Dry Sliding Wear Behavior of Al2O3/SiC Particle Reinforced

Al2O3/SiC powder mix was prepared by reaction of aqueous solution of aluminium sulphate, ammonium sulphateand water containing SiC particles at 1200 ◦C. 10 wt% of this hybrid ceramic powder with di�erent sized SiCparticles was added to a liquid matrix alloy during a mechanical stirring between solidus and liquidus under inertconditions. Dry sliding wear tests were conducted with a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester. The morphologiesof the worn surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope to observe the wear characteristics andinvestigate the wear mechanism. An optical microscope was used to examine the precipitations of the hybrid ceramicreinforced metal matrix composites after wear tests at room temperature under dry conditions. It was found thathybrid and bimodal particle reinforcement decreased weight loss especially when SiC powder with larger grainsize was used. Microstructural examination showed that besides occurring coarse SiC particle reinforcement, a �nealumina particle reinforcement phase was observed within the aluminium matrix (A332). The improvement in wearresistance of the hybrid ceramic reinforced metal matrix composites could be attributed to the ability of the largerSiC particles to carry a greater portion of the applied load, as well as to the function of the larger SiC particlesin protecting the smaller alumina particles from being gouged out during the wear process. Furthermore, theincorporation of hybrid and bimodal particles increased hardness of the composites with respect to the compositewith fully small sized particles.

1. Introduction

It has been generally noted that metal matrix com-posites (MMCs) represent a new generation of materialswith great potential due to their novel properties. Thus,they have attracted a considerable amount of attentionlately due to their signi�cant scienti�c, technological andcommercial importance. Increasingly, MMCs are beingused to replace conventional materials in many applica-tions, especially in the aviation, transportation, electron-ics, and sport industries [1, 2], owing to the increasingperformance requirements in these industries. Follow-ing the development of science and technology, discon-tinuously reinforced aluminium alloy matrix compositeshave become one of the focuses of research and practicalapplications in the structural composites �eld. Many re-searchers have focused on the contributions of di�erentreinforcements for the tribological applications of MMCs.The e�ects of adding harder particles and �bers to re-inforce MMCs in terms of their wear behavior were in-vestigated. Some researchers found that the weight losswas remarkably reduced after hard particles (SiC, Al2O3)[3�12], �bers (Al2O3) [3, 13�15] or whiskers (K2Ti4O9,K2O6TiO2, SiC) [16�18] were added. Having superiormechanical properties, these composites can be used inhigh-speed rotating and reciprocating elements such aspistons, connecting rods, drive shafts, brake rotors, andcylinder bores [1].

Regarding single reinforced MMCs, Sahin [4] reportedthat the wear resistance of MMCs with a normal (N) ori-entation of �bers was higher than that with a planer ran-dom (PR) orientation of �bers in the case of single alu-mina �bers-reinforced aluminium�zinc�copper alloy com-posites for dry sliding wear. Kato [5] reported the e�ectsof the size (5, 15, 120, and 200 µm) of SiC particles onthe wear of a Ni matrix (ductile matrix). He found thatthe wear resistance was improved when the sizes of theparticles increased from 15 to 200 µm but that the wearresistance was reduced with a 5 µm particle size. He alsofound that the e�ects of a volume fraction of approxi-mately 10% SiC particles reduced the matrix wear byhalf.

Sliding wear tests on 10, 20 and 30 wt% Al2O3 particle--reinforced 2024 aluminium alloy composites were con-ducted by Kök and Özdin [6]. Their work showed thatthe wear resistance of the composites was signi�cantlygreater than that of the aluminium alloy alone. The re-sistance increased as the Al2O3 particle content and sizeincreased and decreased as the sliding distance, the wearload and the abrasive grit size increased. Finally, Kökand Özdin [6] found that the e�ect of the Al2O3 particlesize on the wear resistance was more signi�cant than thatof the particle content.

Hybrid-reinforced aluminium MMCs were also inves-tigated. Belmonte et al. [7] found that the wear resis-

tance of Al2O3/20 vol.% SiC composites increased withthe SiC grain size (ranging from 0.2 to 4.5 µm) due tothe enhancement of the fracture toughness. Fu et al.[19] showed that Sa�l/SiC/Al hybrid MMCs presentedthe best wear properties in comparison with Sa�l/Al,Sa�l/Al2O3/Al, and Sa�l/SiC/Al hybrid MMCs underdry sliding wear conditions. The wear properties of theSa�l/Al MMCs were the best among them when werelubricated with liquid para�n. Du et al. [20] reportedthat with an increase in the volume percentage of thereinforcement with a 1:1 constant hybrid ratio, the wearvalue of the composites decreased.As for an equal volume fraction of the reinforcement

phase, the wear-resisting property of Al matrix compos-ites was superior to that of Al-matrix composites. Otherresearchers have focused on the high-temperature slid-ing wear. Rodriguez et al. [11] investigated aluminium�lithium alloys reinforced with SiC particles. The com-posite transition temperature was higher than that ofthe unreinforced alloy. Liu et al. [21] studied the high--temperature friction and wear behavior of Al2O3 and/orcarbon short �bers. They found that the friction coe�-cient and the wear rate of the hybrid composites contain-ing a �xed 12 vol.% Al2O3 decreased with an increase ofthe carbon �ber volume fraction up to 6 vol.%. In ad-dition, the dominant wear mechanisms shifted to severeadhesion at test temperatures above the critical transi-tion temperature.Furthermore, compared with unreinforced metals, ce-

ramic particle reinforced aluminium can feature a lowthermal expansion, that can be tailored by varyingthe volume fraction and morphology of the ceramicphase [22]. The e�ects of the particulate reinforcementon dry sliding wear of MMCs have long been investigatedby researchers and reviewed by Sannino and Rack [23].It was noted that di�erent types of matrix and reinforce-ments, together with di�erent wear conditions, resultedin a di�erent wear mechanism. Hence, the reinforcementplays quite di�erent roles during sliding process, whicha�ects the wear resistance of MMCs either bene�ciallyor detrimentally. Therefore, optimum particle size, dis-tribution and volume fraction are important. In additionto particle properties, matrix strength is also important.Several works have been carried out to increase matrixstrength by aging the Al matrix but this is not su�cientto prevent wearing of Al matrix.The wear and friction behavior of aluminum/silicon

carbide (Al/SiC) composites have been extensively in-vestigated [24]. In particular, SiC particulates employedto reinforce a variety of aluminum alloys show a trendof increasing wear resistance and decreasing friction co-e�cient in contrast to the unreinforced aluminum alloys.However, trends in friction coe�cients for Al/SiC mate-rials are reported to be inconsistent with other investi-gations using similar Al/SiC materials. For instance, inone report, SiC particles improved the wear resistancebut also increased the friction coe�cient over the unre-inforced aluminum alloy [25].

Due to a lack of development for a common testingprocedure, the wear and friction coe�cient results candi�er and thus are numerically di�cult to compare fromstudy to study. While rarely mentioned in the literature,each wear and friction experimental result from di�er-ent studies is unique because of the conditions the twoopposing materials were exposed to: pin-on-disk, ball-on--disk and block-on-ring. In addition, examples of varyingconditions from laboratory to laboratory can be a prob-lem; the atmospheric humidity, wear procedure employed(normal load, specimen geometry, sliding speed, slidingdistance, test duration) in addition to counterface mate-rial and surface condition may have a dramatic e�ect onthe results [26, 27].This work investigates the dry abrasive wear and fric-

tion properties of a pin-on-disk sliding against A332 alu-minum alloy and A332-Al2O3/SiCp composite with 10%volume fraction of di�erent Al2O3/SiC particles size net-work reinforcement.

2. Experimental

2.1. Material

Al2O3/SiC particulate reinforced metal matrix com-posites were produced by a stir casting process. The me-chanical and physical properties of the metal matrix com-posite (MMC) properties of the MMC reinforcements areshown in Table I. The chemical composition of the A332Al�Si alloy is shown in Table II. In the hybrid MMCs,both the reinforcing materials, Al2O3 and SiCp, wereused at di�erent sizes.10 wt% hybrid ceramic powder mix was prepared by a

chemical route, milled and then inserted in an Al�Si�Mg(A332) alloy in the melt condition by a stir-casting pro-cess. While SiC particles were supplied commercially,Al2O3 was chemically produced from aluminium sul-phate. Al2O3/SiC powder mix was prepared by additionof SiC particle into the aqueous solution of aluminiumsulphate, ammonium sulphate and water, followed by areaction at 1200 ◦C. After this reaction, chemically pro-duced α-alumina with uniformly distributed silicon car-bide cake was fabricated and ball-milled to adjust the

alumina particle size before stir casting. 10 wt% of thishybrid ceramic powder with di�erent sized SiC particleswas added into the liquid matrix alloy during mechani-cal stirring between the solidus and liquidus under inertconditions.The wear behaviours of the cast composites were in-

vestigated using the pin-on-disc test at room temperaturewith 1 m s−1 speed under 20 N and 40 N loads and dryconditions. Optical microscopy (Olympus BH2-UMA)was used to examine particle distribution and scanningelectron microscope (SEM) (Camscan S4-8D7) combinedwith energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis wasused to investigate polished and worn surfaces. Brinellhardening values of Al2O3/SiC particle aided MMCs ma-terials were obtained by using a Wolpert Testor HT1atype machine with a 187.5 kg load and a 2.5 mm dimen-sional steel ball at the end of 30 s.The length and diameter of the pin specimens were

15 mm and 5 mm, respectively. A steel counter disk wasmade of 42CrMo4. It was machined to a height of 7 mmand a diameter of 30 mm for all wear tests. The averageroughness values of the pin and disk surfaces were mea-sured after polishing with 700-grit sandpaper. These val-ues were 0.21 µm and 0.12 µm, respectively. The weightloss amounts of the pin specimens and the disk due tosliding wear were measured by a precision electronic bal-ance having an accuracy of 0.01 mg. The volume loss (V)of the �lms during wear was calculated according to theASTM Standard G99 [29]. Finally, all of the test resultsare presented in terms of the wear rate (mm3/(Nm)).The instantaneous values of the calibrated normal (FN)and tangential (FT) forces were measured and the vari-ation of the coe�cient of friction (µ = FT/FN) as afunction of sliding distance was determined.

2.2. Procedure of experiment

The wear tests were performed using a pin-on-disk fric-tion and wear tester. Figure 1 shows the rotating steelcounter disk of the pin-on-disk friction and wear tester.In this con�guration the steel disk is static and the pinmoves around the disk axis, see Fig. 1, both disk andpin are pressed by the applied load. The wear tests wereperformed in dry sliding condition at room temperature.

The testing distance is always 3600 m with a rotationalvelocity of 570 rpm, and the sliding diameter of the cen-ter of pin sample is 6 mm, resulting in a controlled slidingvelocity of 1 m s−1. The constant applied loads were 20 Nand 40 N.

3. Results and discussion

Hybrid ceramic particles Al2O3/SiC were chemicallyproduced by decomposition aluminium sulphate aque-ous solution containing SiC particles. A slurry was pre-pared by mixing aluminium sulphate, Al2(SO4)3·24H2O(342 g/mol), and ammonium sulphate, (NH4)2SO4

(132 g/mol) in water, and silicon carbide powder wereadded into the slurry. The resulting product was(NH4)2SO4, Al2(SO4)3·24H2O plus SiCp after dissolv-ing chemicals in water. This product was heated up in aceramic crucible in the furnace. With the e�ect of heat,sulphate ions were volatilised and the mixture began tofoam and �nally Al2O3/SiC foam was obtained. Thedetailed reactions of the powder preparation have beengiven in Ref. [30].SEM micrograph of this hybrid ceramic foam is in

Fig. 2. According to SiC particle size and rate, the mor-phology of ceramic foam is changed. Smaller SiC parti-cles cause smaller pore formation and solution containingless SiC particle results in higher porosity. This ceramicfoam was milled to adjust particle size before stir cast-ing. This hybrid ceramic powder with di�erent SiC par-ticle size range was added into liquid matrix alloy by thestir casting process, a 10 vol.% of hybrid ceramic particlereinforcement of these two di�erent powder mix ceramiccake was successfully produced by the stir casting processusing Al�Si�Mg alloys [30].

It is possible to control pore size by changing theamount of alumina in the cake. Since the method of alu-mina production results in a ceramic composite network,decreasing the alumina fraction leads to smaller volumefraction of porosity. Before alumina formation, the so-lution was foamed, sulphate ions were volatilized and

porous alumina formed. Therefore the rate-controllingmechanism for porosity was the shape of alumina graingrown during �ring. The higher alumina was added inthe system, the higher porosity was obtained. When theamount of Al sulphate was higher in the solution a higherAl2O3/SiCp ratio was obtained and therefore larger poreswere produced (Fig. 2).Figure 2 shows a SEM micrograph of the Al2O3/

SiC particles, produced by the chemical route from alu-minium sulphate. Al2O3/SiC particles present a facetedmorphology. Chemically produced α-alumina with uni-formly distributed silicon carbide powder mix were fab-ricated and milled to adjust alumina particle size.The SEM images and EDS analysis of the foamed prod-

uct made with a 50/50 Al2O3�SiC powder blend areshown in Fig. 2. In this �gure, the high magni�cation ofthe 3D skeleton structure foam in which the cells main-tain their circular section is visible. Both the cell shapeand the window shape are circular. The scattered SiCparticles are visible within the alumina skeleton. TheEDS spectrum of the chemical compositions shows anoverview of the SEM image at di�erent regions of thesample (Fig. 2b). The SEM examination with EDS anal-ysis was carried out on a ceramic foam surface. The pres-ence of Al, O, Si, and C-peaks in the EDS indicates theformation of alumina and the existence of SiC as a sepa-rate phase within the analyzed area. Apart from the sur-face reaction between SiC and suspension or �red prod-uct, no other reaction is expected during the �ring andsintering process. Therefore, this SEM image (Fig. 2a) isevidence of the successful incorporation of dual ceramic(Al2O3�SiC) foam.

Figure 3 shows the SEM micrograph of the Al2O3/SiC particles, produced by the chemical route from alu-minium sulphate. Al2O3/SiC particles present a facetedmorphology. Chemically produced α-alumina with a uni-formly distributed silicon carbide powder mix were fabri-

cated and milled to adjust alumina particle size. At theend of the microscopic experiments, as shown in Fig. 3,larger SiC particles and smaller Al2O3 particles were welldispersed in the matrix and fully wetted by molten alu-minium. The presences of these particles increase the me-chanical properties of the composites. Silicon and mag-nesium in liquid aluminium increased the wettability ofthe matrix and assisted to the particle/matrix incorpo-ration.The aluminum oxide foam containing SiC particles was

obtained from the �ring of aluminum sulfate and ammo-nium sulfate aqueous solution. Figure 4 shows an X-rayanalysis of this Al2O3�SiC ceramic foam (50�50 wt%).The analysis showed that α-alumina (corundum) wasobtained after the decomposition of aluminum sulfates.Similar X-ray results were reported related to aluminaproduction from the decomposition of aluminum sulfateand ammonium sulfate [31]. Two di�erent SiC phasesand silica were also detected. The silica comes from theoxide layer of the SiC particle surfaces. In the sinteringstage, some proportion of the alumina and surface sil-ica may form a mullite phase providing an incorporationof alumina and SiC particles. Sintering occurs betweenalumina/alumina and alumina/silica, which exists on theSiC particles. It is interesting to note that the Al2O3�SiC ceramic foam was very delicate for handling beforesintering, but after sintering, the brittleness of the ce-ramic foam disappears and struts strength is increasedas a result of improvement in bonding during sinteringbetween Al2O3 and SiC particles as explained by Yamadaet al. [31].

An optical microstructure of the stir cast composite isshown in Fig. 5. This �gure reveals that large SiC par-ticles with small Al2O3 particles reinforced MMC weresuccessfully produced. It is clearly seen in Fig. 5a thatthe reinforcement of particles into liquid aluminium ma-trix alloy produced by the stir casting method has beenimplemented uniformly. This property of MMCs has in-creased the mechanical properties due to uniform dis-tribution and the decreasing particle size. In Fig. 5b,EDS analysis is given of the SEM view of the compos-ite polished surface containing Al2O3/SiC reinforcement

with a di�erent particle size produced by a stir castingprocess. This EDS analysis showed oxygen and carbonpeaks which con�rm that alumina and SiC particles arepresent within the composites.

3.1. Dry sliding wear behavior

Figure 5 shows optical micrographs of the sliding sur-faces of the pin specimens of the hybrid MMCs with a hy-brid ratio of 10 wt%. In Fig. 5a, it is easily observed thatthe particulates are the sliding surface of the specimen.Figure 6 illustrates the typical A332 aluminum alloy

after exposure to 20 N and 40 N loads. Along thewear track, both wear mechanisms, abrasive and adhe-sive wear, are visible. The magni�ed area of a typicalwear track for the A332 alloy after subjecting it to a 20 Nand 40 N load is shown in Fig. 6. As a result of the largernormal load, the soft aluminum has a greater amount ofmaterial uplift on the inner and outer circumferences ofthe wear track, as well as wider grooves, as compared tothe 20 N loaded specimens. Both adhesive and abrasionwear are present. At a lower load, abrasion is the ma-jor wear mechanism while at higher loads adhesion is themain wear mechanism.

The morphology of the worn surfaces after 3600 m ofdry sliding wear presented in Fig. 6 was examined by

SEM. The tribological characteristics were observed andthe wear behavior was investigated. For �ne particle sizeMMCs were easily pulled out whole from the matrix dueto the particle size increased of the reinforced particlesthat caused a greater weight loss during dry sliding wear.This was the main cause of the considerable weight lossof the coarse particle size MMCs. From a comparisonof Fig. 7a and b, the wide grooves in the worn surfaceof the �ne particle size MMC can be observed. Thisindicates that the main wear mechanism was abrasivewear. In the worn surface of the �ne particle size MMCs,lamination defects were observed directly and the weightloss was mostly caused by adhesive wear. The major wearmechanisms of the A332 alloy are adhesive and abrasivewears which occur at sliding speeds up to 1 m/s.

Figure 7 illustrates the typical A332-Al2O3/SiCp com-posites after exposure to a 20 N load. Similar to theA332 alloy, the A332-Al2O3/SiCp composites exhibitboth abrasive and adhesive wear along the wear tracksliding direction. Studies on aluminum matrix compos-ites incorporating ceramic particles have observed a sim-

ilar phenomenon: the debris particles can come loose;others may be embedded into the soft matrix while oth-ers may be crushed under the applied load forming a �lmbetween the two contacting surfaces [32].In this work, Al2O3/SiC particles are shown to have

bene�cial e�ects on the tribological properties of thiscomposite. The Al2O3/SiCp is shown to fracture intosmaller pieces which produce wear debris particles. OtherAl2O3/SiC particulates may prevent the penetration ofthe disk into the composite and thereby protect the softeraluminum from deforming increase its wear resistance.Al2O3/SiC particles may get crushed into powders toproduce a dual e�ect, wear resistance and friction co-e�cient reduction, respectively as observed in the wearrate and friction coe�cient results.On the worn surface of the �ne particle size MMC, frag-

mentation was easily observable, as shown in Fig. 7a. Incase of the 20 µm particle size MMC under the same wearconditions, the characteristics of the worn surface wereclearly di�erent in comparison with the 38 µm particlesize MMC as shown in Fig. 7b. Figure 5c and d illus-trates the worn surfaces of the specimens of the MMCs,which show less surface damage. In a comparison of wornsurfaces with �ne particle size and coarse particle size ofthe MMCs, it was found that the worn surfaces becamemore damaged when the particle size was increased.Additionally, the wear worsened after dry sliding wear

at room temperature. A reasonable explanation for theseexperimental results could be the synergetic action be-tween the hardness of the reinforcements and at roomtemperature at which the tests were conducted. Re-garding the physical properties of the particle reinforce-ments, they were harder than the matrix. Hence, theycould bear the load and attained the expected purposeof improving the wear behavior. However, for the hybridMMCs, the wear rate increased with increases in the par-ticle content. It is clear that the e�ect of the particlesis not the same as the e�ect of the particles on the wearresistance. An explanation may be that the particles aredistributed in a form where they act like a mat; due to thefact they have a large aspect ratio. This mat distributesthe load in a large volume of the matrix, but this e�ectis diminished when the particle fraction increases.The A332-Al2O3/SiCp composites after exposure to a

40 N load show the wear surface given in Fig. 8. The mi-crograph shows mixed regions of adhesive and abrasivewear in addition to some material uplift on the circum-ference of the wear track. Figure 8 shows the worn sur-faces of the hybrid MMCs specimens with load 40 N.In Fig. 8a, although grooves were observed that weremainly caused by abrasive wear, the ploughing was rela-tively mild as compared to that in Fig. 8b. However, inthis comparison, in the worn surface of the specimen inFig. 8c fewer grooves and more fragmentations were ob-served. These were caused by adhesive wear. In the casewith an increased load specimen with more severe wornsurfaces were observed, as shown in Fig. 8d. It shouldbe noted that, at room temperature, more cracks were

observed on the worn surfaces, especially in the case ofthe �ne size hybrid composites. However, with 10% ofcoarse Al2O3/SiCp content specimens, after the dry slid-ing wear, less ploughing worn surfaces were noted in bothcases as shown in Fig. 8.

in Fig. 9 and Fig. 10, the wear grooves in the aluminumalloy appear to stop at the boundary of the abraded strut.The immediate area surrounding the strut is smooth in-dicating less material removal by the disk in this location.There is some smearing from the constituents of the strutmaterial as depicted behind the strut. These observa-tions may be the reason why the composite demonstratesimproved wear and friction coe�cient properties as com-pared to the matrix alloy.

The microstructure of MMCs used in the experimentshas been changed depending on the cooling rate of cast-ing. This cooling rate in�uences the distribution ofAl2O3/SiC particles in the casting. This e�ect becomesimportant in the case of the composite, because Al2O3/SiC particle distribution is a�ected by the growing alu-minium pushed by the leading edges of growing alu-minium dendrites. The cooling speed a�ects the particledistribution the casting process and, so, hardness resis-tance is a�ected. High cooling has caused the formationof small dendrites, and therefore, the particles have beenvery uniformly distributed. In addition to this homogenydistribution, with the decrease of particle size the hard-ness resistance of MMCs has increased.

The results of hardness experiments have been givenin Fig. 11. The smallest resistance hardness values havebeen obtained from coarse reinforced MMCs particles.With the decrease of particle size, in spite of the increaseof the porosity amount in the composites structure, theresistance and hardness values have increased [33]. Re-cently, in the related studies [34, 35], the decrease in re-inforcement particle size, improvement in resistance andhardness have been reported as like the results given inFig. 11. In these studies, having high resistance of rein-forced thin particles MMCs had been based on the de-crease of reinforcement particles and the cracking andbreakings risk the situation of the high dislocation inten-sity and deformation.

The e�ects of the weight loss of the MMCs for dry slid-ing wear at room temperature are illustrated in Fig. 12.The wear ratio monotonically increased due to the addi-tion and with increased Al2O3/SiCp size of MMCs. Itwas easy to determine the wear rate ratio as shown inFig. 12. The wear losses of the Al2O3/SiCp compositesafter 3600 m sliding under 20 N, and under 40 N forcomparison are shown in Fig. 12. It may be seen thatalthough the weight loss of the alloy was higher thanthose of the composites, it decreased dramatically withsliding distance. Weight loss of �ne particle compositeswas higher than the coarse of the composites. This re-sult is similar to that reported by Salvador et al. [36] andY�lmaz and Buytoz [37].Dry sliding wear tests of 2, 10, 20, 38, 45, 53 µm SiCp

with or without alumina reinforced composites and thematrix alloy were carried out using a pin-on-disk and theresults are plotted in Fig. 13. Increase in particle sizedecreases volume loss of composites for either monolithicor dual particle reinforcement. However, for dual and bi-modal particle (Al2O3/SiC) reinforcement each compos-ite showed lower weight loss than monolithic reinforce-ment. This means that the second �ne ceramic phasestrengthens the matrix and prevents matrix wear be-tween the coarse particles as in the aged MMCs. Whenthe abrading disk surface contacts the coarse hard par-ticles, it is hard to fracture or to pull-out coarse par-

ticles unless the matrix is worn. Since matrix hard-ness is increased with �ne alumina particles especiallyfor large SiCp with Al2O3 powder mix, reinforced com-posites show superior wear properties than that of mono-lithic SiCp reinforced composites due to good incorpora-tion of two di�erent particles. Those results are similarto that of Y�lmaz and Buytoz [37].

3.2. Coe�cient of friction

Figure 14 plots the variation of the coe�cient of fric-tion with the hybrid particle size of the MMCs at roomtemperature. The coe�cient of friction decreased whilethe particle size increased. Furthermore, although thehybrid particle size had e�ect on the coe�cient of fric-tion, the large particle size had a greater e�ect on this.The coe�cient of friction of the �ne particle size MMCswas higher than that of the coarse particle size MMCs atroom temperature. Similar coe�cients of friction resultshave been reported for MMCs by Wang et al. [3].

3.3. Strengthening mechanism

As is known, generally hard and coarse reinforcementscan enhance the wear properties of composites. Theresults of the wear tests showed that the wear resis-tance increased as the Al2O3/SiCp size increased at roomtemperature. This occurred because the matrix mate-rial became softer at room temperature. The reinforce-ments could not resist the plastic deformation on the sur-faces. Fine particle reinforcements caused more weight

loss. There are two reasons for this. The �rst is thee�ect of the solid solution strengthening of the Al�Si al-loy. The second phase solid solved in the matrix of theA332 Al�Si alloys were then strengthened by the precipi-tation of Si while the content of Mg was su�ciently high.However, the content of Mg was only 0.5�1.5 wt%, asshown in Table II. In this case, the highest solubility ofMg2Si which was 1.85 wt% in Al�Si alloy could not bereached, despite the fact that all of the Mg was convertedto Mg2Si [32]. Therefore, during the wear test at roomtemperature, there was no more Mg2Si to be solved toimprove the wear properties. The reason was the e�ectof precipitation strengthening. As shown in Fig. 12a, re-inforcements of Al2O3/SiCp were easily observed.

4. Conclusion

Hybrid MMCs were tested for their dry wear behaviorsby a pin-on-disk friction and wear tester at room temper-ature. Through the above analysis and comparisons ofthe test results, the following can be summarized.1. Processing variables such as holding temperature,

stirring speed and the position of the impeller in the meltare among the important factors to be considered in theproduction of cast metal matrix composites as these havean e�ect on mechanical properties. These are determinedby the reinforcement content, its distribution, the level ofthe near contact of the wetting with the matrix materials,and also the porosity content.2. Aluminium-based metal matrix composites contain-

ing 10 vol.% of Al2O3/SiC particles were successfullysynthesized by the stir casting route used in the presentstudy. Uniform distribution of Al2O3/SiC particles inmatrix alloy was successful. Fine alumina containingcoarse SiCp powder mix can be produced by a chemicalroute. Successful particle matrix incorporation can beachieved by the stir casting process. The wear behaviorsof Al2O3/SiC reinforced aluminium matrix compositesdi�ered from that of SiCp reinforced MMC. With hybridparticle distribution within the matrix, higher wear resis-tance was obtained. Fine Al2O3 particles hardened thematrix and decreased the wear rate since they were welldistributed in the inter-particles spacing of coarse SiCparticles within the aluminium matrix.3. Wear tests showed that the wear strength of

10 vol.% Al2O3/SiCp hybrid ceramic powder compositesdecreased with increasing reinforced Al2O3/SiC particlesize. Comparing the �ne particle size MMCs with thecoarse particle size MMCs were easily pulled out wholefrom the matrix. This was the reason for higher weightloss and volume loss of the �ne particle size MMCs com-pared to the coarse particle size MMCs. The wear resis-tance of coarse particle size reinforcement MMCs rein-forcement at room temperature was superior to that ofthe hybrid-reinforcement MMCs after dry sliding wear.4. The wear resistance of hybrid MMCs shows a de-

creasing trend in MMCs cases, as the Al2O3/SiCp hybridceramic powder composites increase with increasing rein-forced SiC particle size. The wear mechanisms of MMCs

with the �ne Al2O3/SiCp were abrasive, while this wasprincipally adhesive for hybrid MMCs with the coarseAl2O3/SiC particle size. Additionally, the results of thecoe�cient of friction of a �ne hybrid particle size MMCstested were lower than that of a coarse particle size MMCtested at room temperature.
