Dear Member of the Class of 2022,
Congratulations on your acceptance into the Nursing Program at Naugatuck Valley Community
College. The faculty and staff are committed to helping you succeed and look forward to guiding
you through your nursing education experience.
An orientation program will be held online. Further instructions about the orientation will be sent
to your college email by May 1st.
You will be sent instructions on how to create a document tracker account with CastleBranch at
https://portal.castlebranch.com/NM9. CastleBranch is the repository for all your program and
clinical compliance documents, such as your health history form and Basic Life Support
certification. The initial cost will be $117. You must establish an account prior to May 15th and
begin uploading documents as instructed. Instructions for background and toxicology screening
will be provided at the orientation. If you need assistance, contact the CastleBranch Service Desk
or Anne deHertogh at [email protected].
You must check your college email frequently for additional instructions about preparing for your
nursing education. If you have any immediate questions, contact Nancy Torres, Department
Secretary at [email protected].
We look forward to meeting you this fall.
Stay well and best wishes for success,
Carol Gabriele, DNP, MA, RN, CNE

adjustments and how to request them, please contact: Terry Latella, Counselor for Students

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INCOMING NURSING STUDENTS CLASS OF 2022 May 2020
Orientation
As a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the campus is closed until further notice. Please
thoroughly review the contents and requirements in this introductory packet.
Textbooks
Required Textbooks and Digital Teaching & Learning Materials for Nursing Students are enclosed in this packet.
Clinical Requirements:
• Health Requirements A Healthcare physical form accompanies your acceptance letter. You must submit all necessary
medical information to CastleBranch by August 15, 2020. Directions for creating an account in
Castlebranch are included. The total cost for all Castlebranch requirements is $125.70. Remember
TB testing and physical exam are annual.
• Background and Toxicology Screening Most clinical sites require criminal background and toxicology (drug) screening before July 15, 2020.
Fees for screenings must be paid by the student and are a part of the $125.70 fee. This is due by
August 15, 2020. Students who are found guilty of having committed a felony/misdemeanor or who
have pending cases may be prevented by a facility from participating in clinical experiences at that
institution. If you cannot participate in a clinical rotation at an assigned facility, you may not be able to
progress in the program. If you feel this may apply to you, please consider your acceptance into the
Nursing Program carefully and call Dr. Carol Gabriele, Associate Dean, to discuss confidentially at
203-596-8734.
• Basic Life Support Certification for Health Care Providers Students are expected to have completed BLS certification by August 15, 2020. It is recommended that
you register for your CPR certification with the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) or the American
Heart Association as early as possible as class sizes have been reduced to 6 students per class. You must
make sure that you are registering for Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider. It must include
adult, child and infant CPR. You can sign up for the 6 hour course or the blended course which is an on
line virtual tutorial and then a 3 hour clinical.
Students will lose their seat in the program if clinical requirements are not completed by August 15th.
Any questions in completing or meeting the deadlines for the clinical requirements should be directed to Anne
deHertogh via text at (860) 463-3389. Extra time has been given this year due to the impact of COVID-19.
Do not wait until the last minute to submit your requirements.
Students with Special Needs-ADA Naugatuck Valley Community College is committed to equal access for persons
with disabilities. Academic adjustments are provided to students with disabilities
to assure equivalent access to academic and campus programs. For more information about
academic adjustments and how to request them, please contact: Terry Latella, Counselor for Students
with Disabilities, Room K519B Kinney Hall, (203) 596-8608, [email protected]. Terry works with students
to discuss individual requests, review the type of adjustments and services that the college will provide and
inform them about any documentation that may be necessary to arrange for
certain adjustments. Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact Terry at least one month before classes
begin to avoid any delay in providing academic adjustments, especially when the College must arrange for
external resources to provide the adjustments. Please also note that academic adjustments cannot be given
retroactively. For further information, please visit http://www.nv.edu/Student-Life/Disability-Services
Malpractice Insurance
You are not required to purchase your own malpractice insurance. The college provides a group policy which
covers students during assigned clinical times. Students may carry their own policies to provide additional
protection if they wish.
Uniforms
A list of the necessary uniform items is included in the information from Connecticut Uniform. Uniforms may be
purchased from any supplier, however you must purchase the same style numbers – no substitutions in style or
brand are acceptable. Connecticut Uniform in Waterbury is the only place where you can obtain your uniform
patches. Please read the enclosed information from Connecticut Uniform concerning dates and times that you can
order uniforms at the Waterbury store.
Stethoscopes Each student will need to have a stethoscope. Enclosed is information from Standris for ordering stethoscopes
online.
Laboratory Supplies “Skills Pack” Students are required to purchase a “Skills Pack” containing practice supplies to be used while learning skills in
the on-campus nursing laboratories. The packs will be ready to be picked up in the bookstore by the start of the
semester.
The cost is approximately $94.99 + tax. This nursing pack will be used for the entire two-year nursing program.
All nursing students must purchase a skills pack before by the start of the semester.
National Student Nurses’ Association Nurses are encouraged to support their professional organizations. For students, this organization is the National
Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA). Membership will be discussed at orientation. Membership costs are
approximately $50.00 per year for new members and it’s not mandatory.

throughout the program
REQUIRE students to pay the total retail cost of all required textbooks and digital teaching
