IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INCOMING NURSING STUDENTS CLASS OF 2020

May 2018

Orientation A mandatory nursing program freshman orientation will be held on the NVCC campus Tuesday, May 22 from 8:30 a.m. (registration) to 12:00 p.m., in the Community room of Founders Hall F101. You will be introduced to the Associate Dean, faculty, and senior student representatives who can answer your questions about the nursing program. Attendance is mandatory. Textbooks The NVCC Bookstore will have the majority of the NUR*H101 books available for purchase on May 22, 2018. The list of required textbooks is enclosed in this packet. The books will become available again in August during the regular textbook purchase period. The total cost of the textbooks is approximately $500. Fully authorized financial aid students will be able to use their book store vouchers May 22, 2018 if they have already registered for NUR*H101. If you do not purchase your books on May 22nd you will be required to wait until August 1st if fully authorized. If you are fully authorized, you need to stop by the Bursar’s Office K506 to receive your bookstore voucher. If not fully authorized, you must pay for your books personally. Further questions concerning financial aid status should be referred to the Financial Aid Office K513. Health Requirements A list of health requirements accompanies your acceptance letter. You must submit all necessary medical information to CastleBranch by June 1, 2018. Any questions should be directed to Anne de Hertogh via text at (860)463-3389. Remember, some requirements, such as immunizations and tuberculosis testing, are ongoing. Compliance to all requirements must be maintained throughout the nursing program. Students will be dismissed from the program if health requirements are not completed by the designated dates. Students with Special Needs-ADA Students who qualify for reasonable accommodations under the ADA ACT should contact Terri Latella, Counselor for Students with Disabilities at 203-596-8608. Basic Life Support Certification for Health Care Providers Students are expected to have completed BLS certification by June 29, 2018. One of the following is required. American Heart Association BLS or BLS Provider or American Red Cross BLS Provider. It must include adult, child and infant CPR. For your convenience, a list of BLS courses offered at NVCC is included. Malpractice Insurance You are not required to purchase your own malpractice insurance. The college provides a group policy which covers students during assigned clinical times. Students may carry their own policies to provide additional protection if they wish. Uniforms A list of the necessary uniform items is included in the information from Connecticut Uniform. Uniforms may be purchased from any supplier, however you must purchase the same style numbers – no substitutions in style or brand are acceptable. Connecticut Uniform in Waterbury is the only place where you can obtain your uniform patches and name pins. Please read the enclosed information from Connecticut Uniform concerning dates and times that you can order uniforms at the Waterbury store. Stethoscopes Each student will need to have a stethoscope. The NVCC Chapter of the National Student Nurses’ Association, Class of 2019, will be selling stethoscopes and other clinical equipment as a class fundraiser at orientation on May 22nd with samples of stethoscopes and other personal equipment from Standris Distributers. The price list and order forms are enclosed. Orders should be placed at the orientation session, not by phone. Payment is required when you place your order (credit card or check). Purchases will be delivered to the school by the second week of the semester.

Laboratory Supplies “Skills Pack” Students are required to purchase a “Skills Pack” containing practice supplies to be used while learning and skills in the on-campus nursing laboratories. The packs will be ready to be picked up in the bookstore after May 22, 2018. The cost is approximately $90.00. This nursing pack will be used for the entire two year nursing program. All nursing students must purchase a skills pack before August 24, 2018. National Student Nurses’ Association Nurses are encouraged to support their professional organizations. For students, this organization is the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA). Membership will be discussed at orientation. Membership costs are approximately $40.00 per year for new members. Co-requisite Courses BIO 235: Microbiology and PSY 111: General Psychology must be completed successfully by the end of the fall 2018 semester. If you have not already completed these courses, you must register for them for fall 2018. Please note that seats in BIO: 235 fill quickly. Register now if you need these courses! Background and Toxicology Screening Most clinical sites require criminal background and toxicology (drug) screening before attending a clinical rotation. Fees for screenings must be paid by the student. The nursing faculty will inform you when these screenings are required for clinical assignments. Students who are found guilty of having committed a felony/misdemeanor or who have pending cases may be prevented by a facility from participating in clinical experiences at that institution. If you cannot participate in a clinical rotation at an assigned facility, you may not be able to progress in the program. If you feel this may apply to you, please consider your acceptance into the Nursing Program carefully and call Dr. Carol Gabriele, Associate Dean to discuss confidentially at 203-596-8734.
