History of Christianity

• Originated in Jerusalem in the beginning of the 1st century by the followers of Jesus Christ

• Jesus-believed to be Christ, the messiah, the son of god• 12 disciples-hand picked apprentices of Jesus Christ to

spread word of his teachings after his death• Christianity was discouraged until the reign of

Constantine, emperor of Rome, who made Christianity the official religion

• Edict of Milan (A.D.313)

Role of Women• Women in Early Christian Churches had little

freedom, they weren’t allowed to speak, teach, baptize or offer in church.

• In modern churches women have more rights. They are allowed to be church leaders, sing in choirs, pray, teach and do other things without any restrictions.

• The bible refers to a number of women who played important roles: Mary (mother of Jesus), Mary Magdalene, Mary and Bertha, Eve, etc.

Demographics• There are about 1, 995, 229, 000 Christians in the

world. • 33% of the world’s population• The main branches of Christianity are Catholic,

Protestant, and Orthodox.• Majority of the Christians are in U.S. and Canada

(86%), Latin America (92%), Europe (76%), Australia (85%).

• It is the most prevalent faith in Africa (48%).
