• In your small group, please discuss these questions for a few minutes:

STRATEGIC PLANNING IN THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS

• 11/29/17• SAAC Strategic Planning Retreat• Purpose: To review the SA Strategic Planning Process and to

generate Draft Strategic Planning Goals.• 12/15/17• First meeting of the Student Affairs Strategic Planning

Committee• Purpose: Review work of the November Retreat, plan for the

All-Division meeting in January, engage with SCUP Model. • 1/31/18• All-Division Strategic Planning Summit• Purpose: To engage everyone in the Student Affairs Strategic

Planning Process. To unveil the Draft Strategic Planning Goals, get feedback, and generate Action Items.

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS

• 2/18 - Second meeting of the Student Affairs Strategic Planning Committee

• Purpose: Review work of January Summit, modify Strategic Plan goals in light of feedback, and review Action Plan items and begin to craft Strategic Plan Document. Engage with the SCUP Model.

• 3/18 - SA Strategic Planning Committee in joint meeting with SALT

• Purpose: Present work/findings to date. Get feedback, re-direct where appropriate.

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS

• 4/18 - Third meeting of the Student Affairs Strategic Planning Committee

• Purpose: Take feedback on Strategic Plan received, modify, and engage with SCUP Model. Design process for receiving feedback on draft of Strategic Plan. Produce Draft Strategic Plan.

• 5/18 - Receive feedback from Vice President and stakeholders on Draft of Student Affairs Strategic Plan

• 6/18 - Fourth meeting of the Student Affairs Strategic Planning Committee

• Purpose: Finalize Strategic Plan. Transition from Strategic Plan creation committee to Strategic Plan implementation committee. Finalize leadership of the Committee and plans for moving forward.

• What is SCUP?• SCUP Proposes a 25-part Plan through the

Implementation Phase• Sample parts include:

SCUP MODEL FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING

• The Student Affairs Strategic Planning Committee will go through each of these recommended steps and determine how best to use the SCUP guidelines to shape and refine the SA Strategic Plan

• This process will include creating an Integrated Planning Process

4-D PROCESS OF APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY

• Step 1: Discover• Discover high-point experiences and identify strengths and

capabilities—all of which add up to the “positive core.”• Step 2: Dream• Dream—imaginatively and collectively envision what else is

possible.• Step 3: Design• Design—co-construct what can be done to build capacity

(practically) and what should be done (morally).• Step 4: Destiny• Destiny—commit to the iterative exploration of learning,

innovation, and delivering results all stakeholders care about.

APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY QUESTIONS

• What has been a high-point experience in your organization/division when you felt most alive, successful, and effective?

• Without being humble, what do you value most about yourself, your work, and your organization?

• What are the core factors that make this organization function at its best, when it feels a great place to be in, and without which it would cease to exist?

• Imagine it is three years into the future and the organization is just as you would want it to be. What’s happening that makes it vibrant and successful? What has changed? What has stayed the same, and how have we contributed to this future?

TEAMWORK

• Working with your group, discuss any or all of the AI questions. Create some answers that may represent one or many perspectives and write them on post-its. Place the post-its on the sheet of paper that corresponds to the question.
