CALL TO WORSHIP (Saturday)

“Lord, Hear My Humble Prayer” -James Michael Stevens

Anastasia Brown: Violin

Robin Boeling: Piano

Ed Dunklau: Organ

OPENING HYMN – LSB 555

“Salvation Unto Us Has Come”

1. Salvation unto us has come

By God’s free grace and favor;

Good works cannot avert our doom,

They help and save us never.

Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone,

Who did for all the world atone;

He is our one Redeemer.

2.What God did in His Law demand

And none to Him could render

Caused wrath and woe on ev’ry hand

For man, the vile offender.

Our flesh has not those pure desires

The spirit of the Law requires,

And lost is our condition.

Page 2: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb...This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 1. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set

5. Yet as the Law must be fulfilled

Or we must die despairing,

Christ came and has God’s anger stilled,

Our human nature sharing.

He has for us the Law obeyed

And thus the Father’s vengeance stayed

Which over us impended.

6. Since Christ has full atonement made

And brought to us salvation,

Each Christian therefore may be glad

And build on this foundation.

Your grace alone, dear Lord, I plead,

Your death is now my life indeed,

For You have paid my ransom.

10. All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise

To Father, Son, and Spirit,

The God who saved us by His grace;

All glory to His merit.

O triune God in heav’n above,

You have revealed Your saving love;

Your blessed name we hallow.

INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Page 3: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb...This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 1. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C: Amen.

C: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and

cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination)

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what

we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not

loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal

punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to

the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives

you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I

therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of

the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

KYRIE

P: In peace let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God,

and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall;

God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;

he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the LORD has done,

the desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease

to the ends of the earth.

He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;

he burns the shields[d] with fire.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth.”

The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Page 7: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb...This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 1. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Praise to You, O Christ.

EPISTLE READING

Romans 3:19-28

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the

law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held

accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s

sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of

our sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made

known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given

through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between

Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all

are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ

Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding

of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his

righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed

beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the

present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in

Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law

that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. For we

maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA VERSE (Saturday)

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life.

HOLY GOSPEL

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-second chapter.

People: Glory to You, O Lord.

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them,

an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest

commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart

and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest

commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law

and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

NICENE CREED – Saturday

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all

things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of

God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of

very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all

things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and

was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was

crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third

day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the

right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living

and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the

Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father

and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I

believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge on Baptism for the

remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the

world to come. Amen.

APOSTLES’ CREED – Sunday

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ,

His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin

Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He

descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into

heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will

come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

SERMON HYMN – LSB 656

“A Might Fortress is Our God”

1. A mighty fortress is our God,

A trusty shield and weapon;

He helps us free from ev’ry need

That hath us now o’ertaken.

The old evil foe

now means deadly woe;

Deep guile and great might

Are his dread arms in fight;

On earth is not his equal.

CHOIR (Sunday)

2. With might of ours can naught be done,

Soon were our loss effected;

But for us fights the valiant One,

Whom God Himself elected.

Ask ye, Who is this?

Jesus Christ it is,

Of Sabaoth Lord,

And there’s none other God;

He holds the field forever.

3. Though devils all the world should fill,

All eager to devour us,

We tremble not, we fear no ill;

They shall not overpow’r us.

This world’s prince may still

scowl fierce as he will,

He can harm us none.

He’s judged; the deed is done;

One little word can fell him.

Page 11: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb...This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 1. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set

4. The Word they still shall let remain

Nor any thanks have for it;

He’s by our side upon the plain

With His good gifts and Spirit.

And take they our life,

Goods, fame, child, and wife,

Though these all be gone,

Our vict’ry has been won;

The Kingdom ours remaineth.

SERMON

Essential

“The Most Important Thing”

Rev. Mark T. Wuggazer

SERMON OUTLINE

Deuteronomy 6:5. The Shema:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

Matthew 22:38: Jesus called it the most important thing,

“This is the first and greatest commandment.”

The Most Important thing is our faith, and the most important thing we do with it is to

teach it to our children. The most important thing any of us will ever do in our entire

lives is raise our children in the faith.

Questions:

· Are my children involved in an educational opportunity?

· Is my family growing in our faith together?

The worst thing is not dying of the Coronavirus.

The worst thing is dying without Jesus.

Page 12: DIVINE SERVICE SETTING ONE - St. Peter Macomb...This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. 1. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set

Series Recap: Here’s what we value:

1. Our church, our faith, our God

2. Worshipping and gathering together – connection

3. Generosity, sacrifice and service over money

4. Today: The next generation, our children – passing on to them

a passionate faith!

5. Next week: Non-believers. We want to create a church that caters to them,

not us. We value their souls higher than our own wants needs and desires.

OFFERING

The giving of our gifts to the Lord is an act of worship.

OFFERTORY

What shall I render to the Lord

For all His benefits to me?

I will offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving

And will call on the name of the Lord

I will take the cup of salvation

and will call on the name of the Lord.

I will pay my vows to the Lord now

in the presence of all His people,

in the courts of the Lord’s house,

in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.
