Parish Personnel Update:

St. Francis is currently in-between Business Managers. Because of this situation, there has been a restructuring of the parish office. Mimi has increased her duties to include parish bookkeeping. She will still be answering the phones and helping with office needs. Mimi has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, concentrating in Finance and Insurance. She has been an incredible asset to our parish during this transition period.

Bobbi has taken the role of Pastoral Administrative Assistant. She will still be working with Social Action but will now also be helping Father Shane with communication and keeping his calendar. She has her degree in Communication from Baylor University.

Linda Blackwood and Anna Wilson have resigned from their office positions. We thank them for their dedication to the St. Francis community. With their resignation we have hired Monica Conrow to lead Faith Formation, infant through adult. We are excited to bring back our Faith Formation classes and continue to provide the youth and adult education classes we are currently providing.

Divine Mercy Sunday 28 April 2019 The devotion of Divine Mercy was actively promoted by Pope St. John Paul II. On April 30, 2000, the Canonization of Sr. Faustina Kowalska took place and the Sunday after Easter was officially designated as the Sunday of the Divine Mercy (Dominica II Paschae seu de divina misericordia) in the General Roman Calendar. On April 22, 2001, which was one year after establishing Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope St. John Paul II re-emphasized its message in the resurrection context of Easter: “Jesus said to St. Faustina one day: ‘Humanity will never find peace until it turns with trust to Divine Mercy’. Divine Mercy! This is the Easter gift that the Church receives from the risen Christ and offers to humanity.” The devotion to Divine Mercy Sunday grew rapidly after its designation by Pope John Paul II and is now widely celebrated by Catholics throughout the world. The Divine Mercy image is often carried in processions on Divine Mercy Sunday, and is placed in a location in the church so that it can be venerated by those who attended the Mass and devotions. The liturgical celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday reflects the devotional elements of Divine Mercy – the first prayer of that Mass beginning with: Heavenly Father and God of Mercy, We no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He is alive and has become the Lord of Life. This opening prayer refers to Divine Mercy as the key element in the plan of God for salvation and emphasizes the belief that it was through mercy that God gave his only son for the redemption of mankind, after the fall of Adam. Devotion to Divine Mercy was a foundation in the life of St. Pope John Paul II, who died in April 2005 on the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday, was himself beatified on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011, by Pope Benedict XVI, and was canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, 2014, by Pope Francis. Divine Mercy Sunday is the Sunday after Easter Sunday (28 April 2019) and is usually observed by a special liturgy on that afternoon often occurring at 3:00pm (the hour of Mercy) accompanied with the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. In June 2002, St. Pope John Paul II granted indulgences to Catholics who recite specific prayers on that day, which were then formally decreed by the Apostolic Penitentiary. Priests are encouraged on that day to lead the prayers in honor of Divine Mercy, inform the parishioners about the Divine Mercy devotions, and to hear confessions. Many parishes will provide these devotions on Divine Mercy Sunday; those who cannot are asked to refer their parishioners to the celebrations that will take place at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. There will be a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration from 2:30-3:30pm led by Archbishop Sample with the chanting of the Divine Mercy chaplet at 3:00pm. There will be continuous confessions from 1:30pm until 4:30pm. Please join us for this beautiful devotion. There is a film-documentary about the Original Image of Divine Mercy which is highly recommended for those who wish to learn more about the image and the devotion. We need more help planting our Hope Garden Saturday, May 18 at 9:00 am, please email [email protected] to sign up to help plant the garden. This year Hope Shelter received a grant from Washington County. With the grant we were able to provide a bus ticket to every overnight guest each week. The Old Hall had a section of sidewalk poured. All of the electricity was brought up to code and security cameras were installed. All utilities and a volunteer stipend were also covered by this grant. Next time you come to the Old Hall be sure to check out the improvements. The City of Sherwood has also chosen St. Francis Old Hall as a recipient of a city improvement grant. We will be replacing the room dividers at the Old Hall with this money. St. Francis food pantry had another large donation of food from the local Girl Scout troop that uses our space. We are very grateful for their continued support of our food pantry. Happening this Week:

This weekend is the collection for the Catholic Home Missions. This appeal supports dioceses in the United States and its territories that lack the resources to provide basic pastoral ministry to their populations. If you would like to support this worthy cause you can pick up an envelope in the narthex or church entrances and place it in the collection basket next weekend.

SCAM ALERT – There continues to be a large amount of SPAMMING going on which appears on the face of it to come from local parish priests. These have gone from coming strictly via email, to now coming through text messages. The message usually asks for gift cards or a wire transfer of funds. Please know that Father Shane, or any priest, will NOT email or text you to ask for any gift cards or money.
