TALLer Tales

The Easter Vigil

Fire: Earlier on Holy Saturday as Fr. John and I were setting up the sacristy, I shared with him the “formula” that was passed

on to me from Fr. John Wynnycky several years ago for an easy and controlled Easter Vigil fire. As you can imagine, Easter Vigil fires can sometimes get out of control, so having THE formula for an easy and controlled fire takes some of the stress out of the Easter Vigil. The formula is pretty simple: you create a mound of salt in a large aluminum foil covered bowl and drench it with rubbing alcohol. It creates a nice blue flame much like you would get using a Sterno can. I’m always eager to pass on the “secrets of the priesthood” to a new priest … in our case Fr. John. He was intrigued by the idea and I even did a demo for him in the sacristy that morning. He was pretty impressed I would say!

Well, let’s fast forward to the Easter Vigil. The fire was lit. It was beautiful and blue. All was set for an awesome Easter Vigil. After blessing the fire and enjoying its beauty in a darkened and absolutely quiet Gathering Space, I tried lighting my tapers to transfer the fire to the Easter Candle. My tapers wouldn’t light; they were melting quickly in our

presence. Seconds seemed like eternity. All eyes were on me. I could feel my hand getting hotter and hotter. As I moved the tapers around, I could feel the hairs on my hand starting to singe! As the gathered crowd start to chuckle a bit, I tried using a candle and I even had problems with that. Eventually I was able to get that candle lit but it took a long time. Throughout the whole process (while praying feverously I would be able to make this work in front of our newly ordained priest and before I needed first aid help), I kept thinking that Fr. John was probably saying quietly: “Note to self: skip the Monsignor fire formula. It looks painful.”

Easter Thanks: As you might imagine, a ton of work goes on behind the scenes to make our Holy Week liturgies so beautiful and prayerful. There are

many people to thank and I would like to express my gratitude to them for their hard work and devotion.

I’m grateful to Gene Fedeli, who

started our Holy Week off by teaching us the art of palm weaving. With his help and the help of Sandy Markielewicz, we had some of the most beautiful woven palm decorations to accent our sanctuary.

I’m grateful to the children and

teachers at school who participated in the annual Passion Play. Watching the Passion Play and then hearing from the students themselves about what the Passion Play means to them certainly puts you in the mood for all the events of the Triduum.

I’m grateful to Father Rich, a.k.a.

Father Sunrise, who VOLUNTEERS every year to take the Sunrise Mass. Fr. Rich also gets major kudos for the beautiful flowers on the big cross. On behalf of all of us at SJA, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to you Fr. Rich for your generosity and love in putting that big flower-filled cross together. That flower-filled cross has become a much anticipated annual centerpiece of our Easter environment. It’s wonderful to watch how many families take pictures in front of the cross or who simply admire it up close.

I would like to express my thanks to

John Perna, our Director of Music Ministries, the Guitar Group, led by Ken Madeleine, who handled the music for the sunrise and 8:00 a.m. mass on Easter Sunday, the Anthems, led by Eleonore Ellero-Groth, who handled the music for the 12:00 noon mass, the Choirs and to all of our wonderful cantors, accompanists, musicians and singers of the various music groups who did such an OUTSTANDING job with all the music throughout Holy Week. I am grateful for the time and sacrifice they make to provide us with such an outstanding music program.

I am grateful to the ushers, the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, the lectors, the altar servers, the sacristans, led by Anne Melise, the Parish Center Staff, our maintenance staff, the Art and Environment

Committee, the joint Parish Life and Worship Committee, and last but not least Fr. John, Fr. Bob, Fr. Rich, Deacon Mike and Deacon Tom who did so much to get us ready for the great liturgies of Holy Week.

I would also like to single out the

RCIA team: Adele Grady, Jeremiah Baur, Mary Carroll, Lu Kempski, Charlie Lauhoff, Rose Nagy and Josie Strasz. These wonderful and generous people serve as catechists and mentors to those preparing to receive the sacraments at Easter. A great RCIA team is the dream of every pastor; I’m grateful we have

such an outstanding team who walks with our candidates throughout the year.

The Easter Vigil is certainly the

highlight of the entire weekend. By God’s grace we were able to witness the baptism of Jona Fjolla, Stacie Flowers, Joanne Pugh, Nicole Purcell and Aliyah Rach. We saw Joshua Brown, Jennifer Scherer, Jenna Shier, Ingrid Stemmerch and Thor Stemmerch be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. We were able to witness Anna Elliott, Kathryn Elliott and Lauren Hanna complete their Christian initiation by receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. I also want to congratulate Aiden Viggiano, Anthony Viggiano and Jennifer Viggiano who were part of the RCIA class of 2018 and who will be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church during the Easter Season. Congratulations to the entire RCIA Class of 2018! May all of our newly baptized, newly received and newly confirmed continue to conform their lives to the life of Christ as they go forth thanking God for all the good work he has begun in them.

It was another awesome Holy Week

and Triduum at SJA! May we, like the early disciples, continue to proclaim the joyful news of Christ’s resurrection and all that it means to us!

Enjoy the week. Know of my prayers.

In Christ, gmb [email protected]

WORDS ON THE WORD APRIL 08, 2018 - BUILDING A FUTURE

The joy of the Easter story resonates especially clear during this holy season, as people of goodwill contemplate not only the ulti-mate victory of salvation, but also God’s ability to create good out of bad during our pilgrim journey on earth.

Consider the story widely reported in local media a few weeks ago of the Eastern Orthodox cathedral in southwest Detroit that has weathered many storms, only to encounter new obstacles.

Over the years, according to a story in The Detroit News, the church was built up to a congregation of several hundred. Then came a massive suburban exodus, leaving only about 50 current members.

Last fall, the story said, air conditioning units on top of one of the parish’s buildings were vandalized, leaving a costly repair bill. That, along with the cost of a security system to help prevent fu-ture such occurrences, has left the church in a bad place financial-ly.

All of which puts at risk the ongoing programs offered by the church and its people – help for the poor, a schooling program for neighborhood children, and a community center.

The parish is praying for God’s help and mercy.

“Our mission is not just to serve and go away,” one woman said in the News story. “Our mission is to be there among (the people). Because we believe very strongly as Orthodox Christians that Christ came in among us.”

And that, to be sure, is what will see them through, somehow, in some way.

God will make it happen.

“For whoever is begotten by God conquers the world,” we hear in today’s gospel from the first letter of St. John. “And the victory that conquers the world is our faith. Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” © 2018, Words on the Word

Pennies for life 2017 was a very good year! We almost surpassed an overall of $8,200 thanks to all of our generous parishioners! This program entered its 11th year this past June. A few wheat pennies (nothing valuable) turn up every week. I am holding onto them in the hope that they can once again be sold for 3 cents apiece. All proceeds are distributed monthly to Pregnancy Aid, a much needed ministry in our area. Please continue to drop your pennies into the marked jug on the Usher's table at the back of the church when you come to Sunday Mass. If you have a large quantity please call me at 313.882.6978 for pickup. A no-cost way to help is to pray for the success of this program. Pennies for Life is sponsored by the St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus Council, which began sending $75 per month (recently increased to $100) to Pregnancy Aid. These donations are in addition to the amount reported above. Thank you all. Jim Victor

Can Tabs Keep saving those tabs. The proceeds now go to support poor adults and children who have transplant surgery and cannot afford the cost of medication needed afterwards. Thanks for all you have done in the past. Just keep them coming. God bless you. Bring the tabs to the parish center to Sr. Rose.

Please help save a life and become a Red Cross Blood Donor!

We Pray: May the Holy Spirit move our hearts to recognize the intrinsic dig-nity of every person we encounter, we pray to the Lord.

Religious Education

Dear Lord,

After Easter Sunday, the

real work begins. The

lilies need to be watered,

the spilled candle wax

needs to be cleaned up,

the scattered papers col-

lected, etc. Easter seems

to be over, and the Tridu-

um packed away for another year. Help me

to remember that Easter is only the begin-

ning of 50 days of wonder and joy. Next

week we’ll be back to plenty of room in

Church. Help me to look for new faces and

make them welcome. Help me to see you in

the Breaking of the Bread and the sharing of

the cup. Help me to know you as I serve you

and work to make your church my home.

Help me remember the Death Was and East-

er Is. Amen

Bishop Walter Hurley celebrated Confirma-tion here at SJA on March 22. His words to the newly confirmed and their families were inspiring, so I wanted to share some off his thoughts. First, he told everyone he wanted to offer prayers for special graces and bless-ings for all of us at SJA, and especially these gathered young people who are chosen by God to do his holy work. He invited all to try to remember their Confirmation Days. His memories were limited because he was only in fourth grade and he remembered the bishop talked too long.

He again stressed that our newly confirmed have been chosen by God to carry out spe-cial work that he has given to no one else, and it is different than anyone else’s because we are all different. When they were bap-tized, they were welcomed into the Family of God. God chose them, and all of us, to be part of his family, not because we were cuter babies than all the rest, but because he loves us and wants us to be part of his family. Family relationships can be difficult, but there is no other relationship like the family one. In family, we don’t always get along perfectly, but there is a special bond. Be-cause of Baptism, we are all brothers and sisters and this is marvelous!

When you are chosen in life, it makes you feel very special. Think about trying out for a sports team or a part in a play. When you are successful and chosen, you feel excep-tional. God has made us all unique. God, it might be said, runs a Family Business. We may experience difficult ways, times, plac-es, but the business of God’s Family is fairly

simple. Bp. Hurley had noted the sign in front of Church, and said it expressed the Mission quite well: “Bring God’s Love and Mercy Everywhere.” The young people gathered don’t know what or how they will do it right now. Maybe they will be gener-ous and courageous enough to be part of Church work as a priest, religious, deacon or lay Church worker. Maybe they will work in the medical, legal, or technological field. Maybe they will raise a family. No matter what vocation they choose, they are still charged to bring that message in different ways. Bp. Hurley said none of these future roles is more important than another. In all of them, we can bring the Good News.

In the Old Testament, chosen people were called forth from the community and anoint-ed with oil to be prophets, kings, or priestly ministers. The ritual was the same: they were called and anointed. Tonight at SJA, the newly confirmed were anointed with the oil of Chrism and consecrated by that oil for God’s work. This oil was blessed last Holy Thursday by Archbishop Vigneron at the Cathedral (of the Blessed Sacrament) at the Chrism Mass. They have been consecrated to do God’s work. The young people are being particularly challenged tonight, but all of us who have been confirmed and received the Holy Spirit, are also challenged. The young people do not need to wait till they are “grown-up,’ or 25, to act. They can do God’s work now. How? He asked them to think about School: can they think about kids they know who are being teased, mocked, bullied in school, or cyberbullied? Do they know ones who are very lonely? What can they do?

1) They can let the kids know you are not one of the crowd doing the above.

2) You can let them know you have great respect for them and care about them.

3) You can bring God’s message of love and mercy to them.

4) Let them know they are important in God’s eyes and your eyes.

Think about Family: Often we don’t think our parents need to hear we care. We take for granted the meals, the transportation furnished, and all the work done to help us do. Parents have ups and downs, good and bad days. They get worn out, and a loving word and gesture can mean a lot to them. Brothers and sisters can be a challenge, and we don’t always get along. Bp. Hurley would like to say that he never fought with

his brother or 4 sisters, but that would be a lie. Underneath it all, though, they did love and care for each other. Sometimes there can be competition within the family—the oldest and the youngest, those who seem to be a parent or grandparents’ favorite, etc. No matter, we need to let siblings know we do love them. Any of our brothers or sisters can begin to think, “Does anybody really care about me at all?” When we see this in brothers or sisters, we need to take the op-portunity to let them know “Yes, you matter. Yes. I care. Yes, God cares about you a lot.” Be the one in your life situation now to bring God’s Message.

When Jesus came among us, he acted as Priest-interceding between God and man. We have a part of this ministry when we intercede and pray for each other. Some-thing, again, we can do right now: Pray for others. Jesus also came as Prophet-bringing God’s Message to the world. Our world is desperate for God’s Loving Message. Our world has huge problems: natural disasters, war, hunger, opioid crisis, violence, terror-ism, etc. The world needs God’s love and mercy. Pope Francis said it is not the major things we do that often matter the most, but the simple things –kind words, gestures, even a smile. Most of us cannot and will not solve the world’s major problems, but we can do our part. We can be Bearers of God’s love.

Tonight, we give thanks to God: 1) for our Call 2) the young people who now join us 3) this opportunity to be together and give

our lives to each other.

Bp. Hurley concluded by saying, “In the name of the Church and all here tonight, congratulations and prayers that you always be faithful to the Mission God has given you.

Have a Blessed Easter week, Mrs. C the DRE

The Mystery of God

THE MYSTERY

OF GOD Who God Is and Why He Matters

Atheism is on the rise. Skeptical thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris vigorously attack belief in God as irrational or, even worse, dangerous. The so-called New Atheism has attracted millions of young people thanks to bestselling books such as The God Delusion and God Is Not Great. How should Christians respond? How can we turn the tide of secularism and draw people back to God?

In The Mystery of God: Who God Is and Why He Matters, Bishop Robert Barron reaches into our rich intellectual tradition to teach us how to re-spond. Using the insights of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Pope Benedict XVI, he uncovers a clear yet sophisticated understanding of what we mean by “God.”
