Ancient Greece – birth of the city-state (2,000 B.C.)City-State

- large cities and the surrounding areas- became their own “governments” within the country

birthplace of democracy- developed in Athens- served as a model for modern societies

The Rise of Rome (275 B.C.) Controlled the Italian

Peninsula- came to power as the Greek empire fell apart

Initially a Republic- government controlled by the people, elected government

As empire grew, an emperor took over

The Roman Empire Controlled Iberian, Balkan, and Italian

Peninsulas- also controlled Palestine (Christianity’s homeland)

Expanding territory- allowed for spread of culture- specifically religion and language

Empire split- into east and west- led to the fall of the empire

Italian City-States After the fall of the Roman

Empire- invaders broke up the empire- Italy was a collection of city-

states European Crusades

- religious conflict- attempt to free Christian

homeland from the Muslims- made Italy wealthy

Italian Renaissance The Renaissance

- began in the 14th century- renewed interest in learning

and the arts- spread throughout Europe

included innovation in science and increased technology of the time

Spain – The Explorers and Conquerors700 B.C. Muslim

invasions from Africa took over some of the Iberian Peninsula

Spain retook the peninsula in 1492

Funded Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the new world

Bubonic Plague – Black Death Disease that spread

through fleas carried by rats

Developed into pneumonia- affected most countries and societies in - wiped out many families

Recovering from the Plague After the plague, the population of Europe

remained low for centuries- people fled the cities- economic growth slowed- religion flourished

Society only truly recovered at the time of industrialization

From Agriculture to Industry Europe moved from an agricultural society

to one based on industry- term: Industrialization – new technology that led to machines, factories, and increased production- increased urbanization – people moved back to the cities, where work and money was available
