Rotary’s Guiding Principles

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Rotary Community Service encourages and fosters the application of the ideal of service to the personal, business and community life of every Rotarian. In carrying out this application of the ideal of service, a variety of activities developed by Rotary clubs have afforded significant opportunities for service by their members.

Community Service is an opportunity for every Rotarian to exemplify “Service Above Self.” It is the commitment and social responsibility of every Rotarian and Rotary club to improve the quality of life for those who live in the community and to serve the public interest. (Rotary International Code of Policies 8.040.2)

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

(Rotary International Constitution Article 4)

THE FOUR-WAY TEST

The Four-Way Test was created in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor, a member of the Rotary Chicago, who later became the President of Rotary International in 1954-55.

The Four-Way Test serves as an ethical guide for members to live by in their personal and professional relationships. Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and

BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all

concerned?

THE CODE OF CONDUCT

The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

As a Rotarian, I will: 1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards

in my personal and professional life 2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and

their occupations with respect 3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to:

mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world

4. Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

5. Help maintain a harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities, report any suspected harassment, and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment.

(Rotary International Code of Policies 8.030.2)

Paul Harris

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA on April 19, Paul Harris spent his early years in Wallingford, Vermont. He went on to study Law at the University of Iowa, and following his

graduation in 1891, spent the next five years seeing the world. He then went to Chicago to practice law.

Today Rotary is well known throughout the world for its dedication to service and international goodwill. This was hardly in the mind of Paul Harris when he founded the organisation in Chicago in 1905. He envisioned a new kind of club for professionals that could recapture some of the friendly spirit among businessmen that had existed in smaller communities. On Feb 23 1905, he invited three friends to a meeting where they discussed Harris’ idea that business leaders should meet periodically to enjoy fellowship and to enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances. Among them was a coal merchant, a mining engineer, a merchant tailor and Harris, a lawyer.

The club met weekly and membership was limited to one representative from each business and profession. Though the term Rotary was not used that night, it is commonly regarded as the first Rotary meeting. Paul Harris named the club „Rotary„ because members met in rotation at various places of business. The name met with general approval and club membership grew rapidly.

When Paul Harris became Club President in its third year, he was anxious to extend Rotary to other cities because he was convinced that the Rotary Club could be developed into an important service movement.

Rotary International Theme 2021 – 2022

Shekhar Mehta, a member of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, revealed the 2021-22 presidential theme, Serve to Change Lives, to incoming district governors on 1 February during the Rotary International Assembly. Mehta spoke about how participating in service projects through Rotary changed him as a person and made him empathize more with the needs of others. Soon after joining his club, he helped carry out projects that benefited rural communities in India. Some of the poor conditions he saw in those communities strengthened his commitment to service. “I truly understood the plight of my brethren,” he said. Mehta participated in initiatives that brought artificial limbs to children, clean water and sanitation to homes, and better health care facilities to communities. “Rotary kindled the spark within me to look beyond myself and embrace humanity,” he said. “Service became a way of life for me and I, like many others, adopted the guiding philosophy that ‘Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth, and I want to be a good tenant of this earth.’” Mehta encouraged district governors-elect to lead by example during their term and inspire Rotary and Rotaract members to participate in projects that have measurable and sustainable impacts. He’s asking each club to conduct a Rotary Day of Service. “At the end of your term as district governor, you should feel that because of your leadership, because of your inspiration to Rotarians and Rotaractors, the world has changed for the better because of the service done by them during the year,” he said. For the 2021-22 Rotary year, Mehta wants members to focus their efforts on empowering girls and ensuring their access to education, resources, services, and opportunities so that future generations of women leaders will have the tools they need to succeed. Mehta asked members to use Rotary’s belief that diversity, equity, and inclusion is critical in all we do as a compass to guide this work. “There are many issues that girls face in different parts of the world, and you as leaders will ensure that we try and mitigate the disadvantage of the girl that they may have,” he said. To be able to do more through service, Rotary needs to increase membership, Mehta said. Membership has hovered around 1.2 million for the past two decades. He challenged the incoming governors to be catalysts in their districts to help increase membership to 1.3 million by 1 July 2022. Mehta’s Each One, Bring One initiative asks every member to bring one person to join Rotary within the next 17 months. Increasing membership while also continuing our commitment to eradicating polio, fighting COVID-19, and serving our communities is an ambitious goal. “And that should excite you,” Mehta said. “Rotarians love challenges.”

District Governor's Visits 2021-22

Date Club Governor Visit Information

5 July Onehunga One Tree Hill I am looking forward to joining you and your club for the official District Governor visit where you are encouraged to invite partners, Rotary alumni, and other interested parties to come along for the evening. The purpose of the visit is to get to know you and your club members, update you about Rotary activities and hear about your plans and any challenges you may have that we can assist you with. During the visit I will be the main guest speaker, so no other speaker is required. During my presentation I will outline our goals for the year and what this means for your club and talk about some exciting projects we are working on that you can be part of. My wife Sarah will accompany me on some visits, along with your Assistant Governor. Protocol determines the meal cost of the Governor; Assistant Governor and their partners are met by the club. No gifts or flowers are expected or required. Should you wish to do so, please put this money towards Rotary Foundation or other club projects. Governor meetings with individual club boards, to discuss the club’s plans and goals for the year, as well as any matters of interest or concern are optional and can be held either prior to or following the visit. We look forward to working with you all to create a dynamic and

vibrant district

Please refer to the schedule to the left for the Governor itinerary. If you are unable to attend your club’s session and wish to attend another date, arrange this with one of the hosting club Presidents. Regards Grant Smith

DISTRICT INTERNATIONAL SERVICE/ROTARY NEW ZEALAND WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE

District International Service Chair and D9910 Director RNZWCS Bruce Morrison [email protected] M: 027 431 6296 Rotary North Harbour

RNZWCS was established to recognise the need to take a New Zealand wide view of World Community Service and each of the six NZ Districts are represented on the board. RNZWCS is registered with the Charities Commission (CC26860). Of particular importance is the MFAT requirement to have a single New Zealand interface when accessing funds. RNZWCS is recognised by the New Zealand Government as a Non-Government Organisation [NGO]. Clubs seeking funding must work through RNZWCS which maintains a register of potential projects and provide opportunities for clubs to participate in larger world community service projects. Details of the criteria and the procedure for applying for grants and other information can be found on the RNZWCS web site www.rnzwcs.org. RNZWCS also operates a Donations in Kind scheme which advises on needs, provides storage and coordinates the distribution of goods, including emergency response kits, particularly to the Pacific Islands. Taxation Status - Background RNZWCS Limited (Rotary New Zealand) has been granted overseas donee status under the Taxation (Tax Administration and Remedial Matters) Act 2011: Overseas donee status Schedule 32 of the Income Tax Act 2007. Charities that apply some or all of their funds outside New Zealand must be approved for charitable donee status by Parliament. These organisations are listed in schedule 32 of the Income Tax Act 2007. Donations to listed organisations entitle individual taxpayers to a tax credit of 331/3% of the amount donated up to the level of their taxable income, and companies and Māori authorities to a deduction for donations up to the level of their net income.

RNZWCS Limited Administrator Stuart BATTY PO Box 20309, Bishopdale, Christchurch 8543 H:03 359 9218 M: 027 269 5615 [email protected] www.rnzwcs.org https://www.facebook.com/Rotary-NZ-World-Community-Service-Rnzwcs-Limited ShelterBox ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and life-saving supplies to families around the world who are affected by disasters. ShelterBox responds to earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, typhoons and conflict, delivering lifesaving aid to families across the globe at a time when they need it the most. The ShelterBox solution is to provide a large box, tailored to each type of disaster but typically containing a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water purification and storage equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children's activity pack and other essential items. ShelterBox relies entirely on public donations and could not operate without the generosity of Rotarians and people the world over. A ShelterBox can be sponsored for NZ$1,500 – which takes into account the cost of all materials, packing, storage, transport worldwide and delivery to families in need at a time of disaster by a team of ShelterBox volunteers. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Team volunteers or SRT’s, distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local government organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. Every ShelterBox bears its own unique number so that as a donor you can track your box all the way to its recipient country, via the ShelterBox website. To date more than I million people have been provided with shelter, warmth and dignity following more than 170 disasters, in over 75 countries. Donations can be made on the ShelterBox website: www.shelterbox.org.nz

We do this in partnership with local organisations, including hospitals, universities and local NGOs. Our mission is to “repair bodies and rebuild lives‟ and we do this through providing surgical services to those who could not otherwise afford or access these, and by building the capacity of local medical systems through our training and mentoring programs. Donations can be made at any Westpac branch or via internet banking to: RNZWCS Westpac account 03-1702-0192208-02 Use reference code 404 your name for personal Interplast donation or 404 Dis 9910 for Interplast club donation. Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) ROMAC is a humanitarian Rotary programme which has been in operation since 1988. It’s mission is to provide medical treatment for children 15 years and under, who are from developing countries of the South Pacific region, for lifesaving and/or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to them in their home country. Objectives

● To provide hope where there is no hope ● To restore dignity to human life ● To transform a child’s life ● To provide the best medical and surgical

expertise ● To mend broken lives of young people from

developing countries

Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise to run this Rotary programme which encompasses and is endorsed by all Australian and New Zealand Rotary Districts. ROMAC has no employees, no buildings, and no vehicles and consequently almost 100% of donations and grants received by ROMAC is spent on the children. Eminent Australian and New Zealand surgeons donate their time for the treatment of our patients and these surgeons get unique opportunities to develop their specialist skills. Whilst here, the children and care-giver are looked after by New Zealand families, fostering international learning and understanding in the process. Cure Kids

Cure Kids are New Zealand’s leading charitable funder in child health research. Our vision is a healthy childhood for everyone. Since Cure Kids, formerly known as The Child Health Research Foundation, was established by Rotary in New Zealand 45 years ago, more than $40 million has been invested in vital child health research. Cure Kids has enabled vast improvements in the health of children – extending, improving and saving the lives of kids both here, and around the world. Cure Kids are the only charity in New Zealand that funds research across a broad spectrum of child health. We have funded, or are currently funding research investigating better treatments and cures for inherited heart conditions, cystic fibrosis, childhood cancers, sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), stillbirth, burns and child and adolescent mental health, among many others. We are very fortunate to live in New Zealand where our access to healthcare is far beyond that of many other countries, however, the reality remains that there is still so much more to be done to address alarming health statistics.
