2011-12 SEASON RECAP NOTES

BEE-FENSE In 2011-12, the Hornets again showcased the stellar defense displayed a

year ago, the first under head coach Monty Williams. The Hornets held 50 of their 66 opponents under 100 points this season and ranked 8

th

in the NBA in opponent points allowed per game (93.4)…the Bees also ranked 13th

in opponent field goal percentage at (44.4%) and 2

nd in opponent three-point field goal

percentage (31.7%).

The Hornets were 16-11 this season when holding an opponent to 90 points or fewer, 5-1 when holding to 80 points or fewer and 2-0 when holding under 70 points…the Hornets held opponents under 90 points 28 times in 2010-11, yielding a record of 25-3...the Bees held nine opponents under 80 points in 2010-11 and were 9-0 in those games.

New Orleans only allowed an opponent to score 30+ points in a quarter 32 times this season.

Some of the standout single-game defensive performances from this season:

New Orleans held the Rockets to a season-low 12 1st quarter points and 33 1

st half points

in the season finale 4/26 at HOU.

The Charlotte Bobcats shot 23-76 (30.3%, an opponent season low, last 2/22 at CLE, 32%) from the field 4/17 in CHA and 1-16 (6.3%) from deep. Other opponent season lows worth noting that were accomplished at CHA: Tied the season low in total points (67, vs. ORL1/27), FG made (23), 12 assists (15, three times), lowest point total in the third quarter, 8 pts (previous was 15 pts 2/13 vs. UTA and one point above the franchise/season low in a quarter, 7, 1/19 at HOU).

4/15 vs. MEM, the Grizzlies scored just 35 first half points, committed 21 turnovers, tied an opponent season-low with 15 assists and failed to score 20 points in three separate quarters on 35.7% shooting.

Utah was held to 18.2% (2-11) shooting from distance 4/13 at the Hive and failed to score 20 points in two quarters (2

nd and 4

th) while scoring just six points off Hornet turnovers.

The San Antonio Spurs shot 2-19 (10.5%) from beyond the arc 3/24…the two made three-point buckets was just two more than the opponent season low, when Charlotte was held to 0-12.

The Los Angeles Clippers were held to 5-27 shooting (18.5%) from three-point range 3/22 and missed their last 19 attempts from deep…after scoring 35 points in the first quarter, Los Angeles was held to 55 the rest of the game, including just 11 in the final frame.

3/12 Charlotte was held to 0-12 from beyond the arc and forced into 19 turnovers…the Bobcats also scored fewer than 15 points in two separate quarters (14, 1

st and 12, 4

th).

Mavericks F Dirk Nowitzki was again frustrated by the Hornets D 3/2 at the Hive, shooting just 7-19 from the field with six turnovers…1/7 at DAL, the Hornets held Nowitzki to 2-11 shooting from the field in 30 minutes.

New Orleans was 8-5 in its last 13 games and 8-6 in the month of April…the Bees posted their longest winning streak of the season (four) in the month of April as well…the streak was also the longest since January 2011…since 2/13, the Hornets have played at a .436 clip (17-22).

Four of the six losses came at the hands of the Spurs, Lakers, Grizzlies and Clippers (four of the top five teams in the Western Conference) while three of the wins came over playoff-bound Denver, Utah and Memphis…the wins over the Nuggets and Jazz marked the second time New Orleans defeated those teams this season, and added Minnesota to that list 4/7 and Golden State 4/24, winning the season series vs. UTA, MIN and GSW and splitting with DEN.

The squad had more wins in April (eight) than any other month this season…the Hornets steadily improved in victories from month to month with two in December, two in January, four in February and five in March.

The team shot 55% in consecutive games 4/11 vs. SAC and 4/13 vs. UTA…the Bees shot 50% or better in eight of the last 24 games…New Orleans made better than half their field goals in just eight of the first 42 games of the season

Darryl Watkins and Al-Farouq Aminu tied for the team lead in rebounding with 10 apiece and each notched double-doubles with 13 and 11 points respectively…it was the 8

th time this season that two players had 10+ rebounds in the same game and the 10

th time two Hornets had

double-doubles in the same game in 2011-12.

The five players who played 17+ minutes in the game (Dyson, Watkins, Aminu, Lance Thomas and Greivis Vasquez) had a combined eight years of experience and no player had more than two seasons spent in the league.

IRON MEN Despite the rash of injuries this season, three Hornets (Al-Farouq Aminu, Marco Belinelli and Greivis Vasquez) managed to play in all 66 games… the trio tied for the NBA-lead in games played in 2011-12 and made the Hornets one of only three teams (CHI and OKC) to have at least three players play in every game this year. VASQUEZ ASSISTS Greivis Vasques finished 2011-12 20th in the NBA in assists per game with 5.4 despite playing just 25:50 per contest and serving as a backup the majority of the year…Vasquez was also 10th in assist percentage (35.7%) and 15th in total assists (359)…the team was 12-14 this season with Greivis as a starter, including 8-4 between 4/4 vs. DEN and his last start 4/24 at GSW. Al-Farouq Aminu has also had career individual game rebounding numbers this season, gathering 12 1/7 at DAL (all defensive) and then leading the team with eight rebounds 1/9 at DEN and 4/1 at PHX….Aminu notched a career-high six offensive rebounds 3/2 vs. DAL and had eight total in 25 minutes.

AMINU EMERGES Since he was re-inserted into the starting lineup 4/9 vs. LAL, Al-Farouq Aminu played with much more confidence and aggressiveness…in those 10 contests, Aminu averaged 9.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.7 assists in 34 minutes per game…each of those categories showed significant improvements from his season averages

Aminu led the team in rebounding for the 10th

time this season with 10 4/26 at HOU and had his second career double-double with 11 points…the game marked the third double-digit rebounding effort of his career a game after recording a team-high 11 4/24 at GSW.

Gordon led the team with 27 points in the last home game of the season, connecting on 50% of his shots from the floor and making eight of ten free throw attempts.

In his home debut 1/4 vs. PHI, ‘The Commissioner’ hit his first four shots from the field en route to an 11 point first quarter and ended the game with 22 points.

Gordon also started hot 4/6 at SAS, scoring 15 of the team’s 24 first quarter points on 5-9 shooting with two steals and ended with a Hornets season-high 31 points in just 31:45.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS The Hornets closed out the season strong in the Hive, winning their last four home games and six of their last seven at New Orleans Arena.

CLUTCH GORDON Eric Gordon accounted for the winning points in two of the nine games he has played this season after drawing a foul and hitting a pair of free throws that proved the difference in a 94-92 Hornets win over the Nuggets 4/4

Gordon had a clutch moment to cap his memorable Hornets debut, hitting the game-winning jumper with 4.2 seconds to play 12/26 at Phoenix…in the game, Gordon also became the first player to score at least 20 points in his team debut since the team moved to New Orleans in 2002.

The team is 6-3 when Gordon appears with two victories having come by three points or fewer, accounting for a pair of the three such victories this season.

SUPREME SUPLENTE (SUBSTITUTE) Current Magic F Gustavo Ayón spent his rookie season with the New Orleans Hornets last season and was a bright spot filling in for the injured Jason Smith and Carl Landry at power forward in his rookie NBA season

Grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds 2/22 at CLE, tying the Hornets individual mark for rebounds this season and becoming the third Hornet in as many seasons to reach that plateau.

Achieved his first career double-double 2/15 at MIL with a career-best 12 rebounds to go with 12 points and three steals…the three steals tied a career high…this came a game after he narrowly missed his first 10/10 game, ending with 13 points and nine rebounds 2/13 vs. UTA…Ayón followed the Milwaukee performance up with a 13/11 outing 2/17 at NYK, his second consecutive double-double.

Earned his first NBA start 2/6 vs. DET and responded by grabbing a career-high (at the time) nine rebounds…with the start, Ayón became the first Hornets rookie since Quincy Pondexter 3/7/11 against the Chicago Bulls to start for the team.

GRANDE GUSTAVO Some highlights from a grand rookie season with the New Orleans Hornets from current Magic F Gustavo Ayón.

‘Goose’ had a career-best 17 rebounds 2/22 at CLE which tied the Hornets individual mark for the season (Emeka Okafor 1/21 vs. DAL)…he fell six rebounds shy of Larry Johnson’s rookie record of 23 rebounds (vs. MIN 3/10/92).

Ayón became just the third Hornet (Okafor, David West) in the last three seasons to have as many as 17 rebounds and notched the fifth such game in that span… Ayón became the 20

th Hornets all-time to have at least 17 boards.

On the five-game road trip from 2/15 to 2/22, Ayón averaged 9.8 rebounds, including his three double-digit outings of the season (also 12 2/15 at MIL and 11 2/17 at NYK)… Ayón averaged 7.7 rebounds for the month of February.

Ayón’s stat line in the 4th quarter 1/14 at MEM was impressive: five points, six rebounds, four assists and a block while missing only once from the

field and hitting his only free throw…in fact, Ayón’s 5 point/6 rebound/4 assist performance for a quarter was the first in at least the last 14 seasons in franchise history (dating back to 1998) and at the time was a mark that had only been done one other time in the NBA this season (Kyle Lowry 2

nd quarter 12/29 vs. SAS)…adding in Ayón’s block, he became the first player in the entire NBA since Lamar Odom on

10/31/10 (11-7-4-1) to reach those plateaus.

Against the Warriors, Gustavo Ayón blocked a career high four shots, including the game-saving rejection with :05.9 second remaining.

STARTING LINEUPS in 2011-12, the Hornets used an NBA-high 28 different starting lineups and were never able to roll out the preferred preseason

starting five (Jack-Gordon-Ariza-Landry/Smith-Okafor) for a single game this season

New Orleans started four different players at point guard, shooting guard and center, five players at small forward and seven different individuals at power forward this season.

15 different Hornets started at least one game for the team this season.

FINE FROM THE LINE Notes on the Hornets solid free throw shooting in 2011-12

The Hornets made 36 consecutive free throws over a three game span (UTA/MEM/CHA) until a 4th Qtr miss on Monday 4/16. It was the longest

Hornets free throw streak since 38 in a row during the 2003-04 season.

New Orleans went a perfect 21-21 from the line 4/15 vs. MEM with six different Hornets led by Eric Gordon’s 8-8 not missing an attempt…it was the second time this season (10-10 4/9 vs. LAL) that the Bees didn’t miss a freebie all game…the 4/9 contest marked the first time since 2/5/11 vs. LAL (4-4) that the Hornets were perfect from the stripe.

Al-Farouq Aminu shot 86-114 (75.4%) from the line this season…Aminu went almost a calendar month (January 7th

to February 4th

) without missing a free throw.

Jarrett Jack (129-148) finished the season ranked 12th

in the NBA at 87.2%…Jack was as high as second in the league at 96.0% before missing a pair of free throws 1/13 vs. MIN...Captain Jack led the team in both made free throws and free throws attempted before being declared out for the season with a stress fracture in his foot.

Greivis Vasquez (96-117, 82.1%) only missed 21 times this season and went seven games without missing a free throw between 2/17 at NYK and 3/5 at POR.

The entire Hornets bench shot perfect from the free throw line 4/22 at LAC, combining to connect on all 11 free throw attempts.

New Orleans hit its first 16 free throws 2/28 at CHI and did not miss until 3:32 remaining in the 3rd quarter, finishing 19-22 for the game.

Carl Landry hit on 11-11 free throws 1/25 at OKC.

Emeka Okafor’s stellar 7-7 performance 2/6 vs. SAC helped him on his way to a season-high 19 points and marked the most free throws made in a game without a miss in his NBA career (almost 500 games at the time).

CLOSE CALLS Although the record didn’t accurately reflect it, the Hornets played competitively all season, exemplified by the fact that 44 of 66 games (66.7%) were decided by 10 points or fewer and had a better point differential than seven teams in the league despite having equal or fewer wins than five of them.

Earlier this season, the Bees had three consecutive losses by just two points (the first game of the stretch 1/19 at HOU came in overtime)…it was the first time in franchise history the Hornets had been involved in three straight games decided by two points or less.

The team pushed three teams (Los Angeles Lakers, Indiana Pacers and Houston Rockets) to overtime early in the season, but lost all three of its first overtime contests.

In the two games at home vs. the Spurs, the Hornets have lost by a combined five points, most recently a three-point loss on 3/24, 89-86.

New Orleans also lost to Detroit on 2/4 by two, the fifth game decided by less than three points this season.

The Hornets were 15-29 in games decided by 10 points or less.

GREIVIS DISHES OUT DOUBLES Second-year point guard Greivis Vasquez has gone on a tear recently, recording double-doubles in three of four games from 4/4 vs. DEN to 4/9 vs. LAL…starting the 12 games at point between 4/4 vs. DEN and 4/24 at GSW, he averaged 12.1 ppg, 7.5 apg, 3.3 rpg and 1.0 spg and had six double-doubles on the season

4/16 at CHA, Vasquez tied a career-high 20 points, while dishing out a game-high six assists.

Vasquez scored 18 points and handed out 11 assists 4/9 vs. LAL, while also setting a career-high with five three-point field goals made.

GV narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and nine assists (three steals) 4/15 vs. MEM.

As one of three Hornets to record double-doubles 4/7 vs. MIN, Vasquez recorded 11 points and 10 assists while also contributing five rebounds in a crucial home win over the Timberwolves.

Greivis stepped in for an injured Jarrett Jack 4/4 vs. DEN, and finished the game with 11 points and 10 assists while missing just one shot the entire game (4-5 FG, 1-1 3P, 2-2 FT).

LOW SCORING VICTORIES Including the 4/16 win at CHA, the Hornets have won three other times in franchise history when scoring 75 points or less…12/21/10 vs. SAC, 75-71; 2/21/02 vs. HOU, 73-72; and 12/20/00 vs. MIA, 65-56.

CAREER NIGHT Forward Jason Smith set a new season and career high vs. the Timberwolves as he went 12-16 from the floor with 26 points, 10 rebounds and three steals…it was the first 20/10 game of his career and 3rd career double-double

In 36 minutes of play, Smith hit his first eight shots, going perfect in the first half.

His first miss of the night (4/7) was at the 11:05 mark of the third quarter.

STEALING THE SHOW New Orleans did an exemplary job forcing turnovers during the two game stretch 3/31 at LAL (14) and 4/1 at PHX (19)…of the 33 turnovers, 21 were steals forced by the Hornets D…forward Al-Farouq Aminu had seven steals in the two contests. RETURN OF J-SMITH In the 16 games (including starting the last 14 which he played) after returning 3/17 at NJN from missing 20 contests with a concussion, Jason Smith made his impact felt.

In that time, Smith averaged 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds with 13 blocks on 56.8% shooting.

The fourth-year pro notched his 4th double-double for the year 4/15 vs. MEM with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Smith tied a season high (at the time) with 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds 3/22 vs. LAC in his first start since returning…3/21 vs. GSW, Jason scored 12 points off the bench and grabbed seven rebounds (five offensive).

‘Smitty’ logged just 6:11 4/6 at SAS after injuring himself falling into the stands after blocking a transition layup.

BEST OF THE BENCH Al-Farouq Aminu’s 15 points off the bench 3/26 at LAC were a team-best, marking the 12th time this season a member of the bench has led the team in scoring…it was the second time Aminu led the team in scoring this year, and contributed to the second unit (only five players strong) accounting for a season-high 54 of the team’s 85 points

Chris Johnson scored a career-high 11 points from the bench in the game on 4-6 shooting and grabbed a season-high six rebounds in the effort.

All five available players (Aminu, Johnson, Carl Landry, Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez) played at least 20 minutes.

NO DOUBTING THOMAS There was no doubt that rookie forward Lance Thomas, signed for the remainder of the season February 27th after two 10-day contracts, was an NBA talent 3/9 at DEN

Thomas scored a career-high 18 points while only taking six shots from the field (making three)…the 18 points led the team, making Thomas the 11

th different Hornet to lead the squad in scoring this season.

12 of the rookie’s points came from the free throw line (14 attempts)…both numbers set the New Orleans individual high marks (at the time) in their respective categories for the year (previously 11 and 13, both by Carl Landry)…the effort fell two makes and three attempts shy of the all-time franchise records, held by Brad Miller (5/5/99) and Chris Paul (1/21/06)…in his previous 17 games, Thomas was 16-21 from the line.

The 2010 National Champion also played a career-high 30 minutes and grabbed a career-high four offensive rebounds.

INGREDIENTS 4 SUCCESS In the Hornets 21 wins this season, there were some common factors:

In the first 10 wins this season, the Hornets outshot their opponent, forced 12+ turnovers and led at halftime…all 21 wins have come when outshooting the opponent.

In the 11th and 12

th wins of the season (3/17 at NJ and 3/22 vs. LAC) the Hornets did much of the same outshooting NJ and LAC however the ‘Bees

trailed at halftime and entering the final period and came back to win, marking the first times to overcome a second half deficit and the 2nd

and 3rd

times to win when down entering the fourth quarter…the Bees also overcame halftime deficits 4/4 vs. DEN and 4/19 vs. HOU.

In 16 of the 20 wins, the opponent scored 90 points or fewer.

Five of the 20 New Orleans wins have come in commanding fashion, by 11+ points.

GOOD GREIVIS Second-year man Greivis Vasquez played his best stretch as a pro beginning 1/29 vs. ATL

In all, Vasquez led the team in assists 37 times this season (nine ties), in scoring four times and in rebounding twice (both ties).

GV Notched a double-double with 11 assists and 15 points 2/17 at NYK.

2/10 vs. POR, Vasquez set a career high with five steals and followed it up with three steals 2/13 vs. UTA

Vasquez tied his career high with 20 points (6-9 FG) 2/6 vs. SAC and led the team with nine assists

In the second start of his career (first as a Hornet) 2/2 at SAS, Vasquez tied his career high with seven made field goals on just 14 attempts (50.0%) and tied for the team lead with five assists and two steals…he played a career-high 34 minutes in the game as well.

In 28 minutes 2/1 vs. PHX Vasquez has his best game as a pro, scoring a career high 20 points, dishing a career high 12 assists and grabbing a career-high tying six rebounds…he also tied a career high with seven made field goals

His outing against the Suns marked the first time in franchise history that a reserve scored at least 20 points and had at least 10 assists in a game…it was Greivis’ first double-double of his career…his 12 assists 2/1 were a New Orleans individual high for the season.

SCRAPPY SECOND UNIT As the only four healthy reserves during the back-to-back 3/2 vs. defending World Champion Dallas and 3/3 vs. IND, the cast of a player on a 10-day contract (Solomon Jones), a player who spent unaffiliated time in the D-League this year (Lance Thomas) and two second-year players acquired prior to the season (Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez) had an immense impact off the bench.

Henry scored a career high 19 points on 8-12 shooting with two assists and a team-best two steals 3/2 and poured in nine points with six rebounds the following night.

Vasquez led the team with seven assists against the Mavericks in just 19 minutes in the game and also grabbed six rebounds in that time with a steal and a block.

Jones had a season-high 11 points on 5-9 shooting against Dallas, including a pair of clutch 4th quarter jumpers and grabbed five rebounds….he

followed up that performance with a 12 point/nine rebound effort, one rebound and two points shy of matching his career high numbers.

In only seven minutes, Thomas was able to collect four rebounds 3/2 and scored eight points with three boards in 14 minutes against the Pacers.

Starters Emeka Okafor, Jason Smith, Trevor Ariza, Eric Gordon and sixth-man Carl Landry all missed the games due to injury or illness…this marked the third and fourth games this season the Hornets only had nine healthy bodies for a game due to a rash of injuries and New Orleans is a respectable 2-2 in those games.

SABOR INTERNACIONAL = INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR

Vazquez, a rookie last season, joined Carl Herrera (1991-96) and Oscar Torres (2001-03) as the only Venezuelan-born players.

Early season pickup Xavier Henry was born in Belgium, and is one of only two players in the NBA (joining Tony Parker) to be born in that country.

F Al-Farouq Aminu is of Nigerian descent and plans to compete with his national team this summer.

COMPACT CAMPAIGN The shortened 2011-12 season featured 66 games over the course of only 120 days (not including the three day All-Star Break). Here are some notes that the peculiar schedule produced:

January was the toughest month in terms of games played for the Hornets, with 18 contests (including 10 home dates), an average of a game every 1.72 days! This marks the fourth time in franchise history the Bees have had 18 games in a single month, joining March and April 1999 (also a post-work stoppage season) and in March of 1990…the last time the Hornets had 10 home games in a month was in January 2007, when they played host to 11 games.

The Hornets played a back-to-back-to-back February 20th – 22

nd in Oklahoma City, Indiana and Cleveland, respectively, only the second time in

franchise history the team has had such a stretch of games.

The ’11-’12 schedule featured 15 sets of back-to-back games…there were three sets of home back-to-backs, all in the first three weeks of March (2

nd/3

rd, 14

th/15

th and 21

st/22

nd).

February 11th and 12

th was the first time the team had consecutive days off without a game.

YOUTH MOVEMENT The average age of the three players the Hornets received from the Clippers in the December 14th trade (Al-Farouq Aminu, Eric Gordon and Chris Kaman) was 24 years old

Aminu (21) was the fourth-youngest player in the entire NBA last season.

To begin the season, the Hornets had three rookies on the roster and three more players who had less than 82 games of NBA experience…in fact, the Hornets ranked 3

rd in the NBA in least average experience with only 3.2 seasons of service per player coming into the year.
