Dear Edgewood Community,
As the spring months attempt to approach us, we are gearing up in the planning and preparation phases of our 2018-19 master schedule design. There are many levels of development that go into creating our instructional schedule. With that in mind, our team always begins with identifying the needs of our students. Supported by the work of educational researchers Wiggins & McTighe, backwards design starts with the end results in mind and then uses guided question to socratically develop action steps toward the outcome. In this case, the outcome is to develop an instructional schedule which supports differentiated opportunities for all learners. Using the framework of a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), we are able to properly identify students needs and design groupings for intervention. Likewise, we are able to identify areas of strength and design appropriate groupings for enrichment opportunities.
This visual depicts our socratic method outcomes as they correlate to action steps. While this process takes months to unpack, it is thoughtful in placing the emphasis on what is in the best interest of all students. We look forward to springing forward with our design in the coming weeks.

Come gather and join the effort to help create an amazing WHOLE child learning experience for Edgewood students, faculty, and staff. The PTO works collaboratively to supplement the academic learning environment and provide a special touch that makes school a home-away-from-home. You can use your super powers to help us make a positive difference.
PTO MEETING DATES This year we have arranged for all PTO meetings to take place in the evening. This will provide an opportunity for families not available during the daytime hours to attend. The same day of the week was chosen each month for consistency and efficient calendar planning. If you are unable to attend the evening meetings, please do not hesitate to reach out to the PTO Leadership Team to discuss thoughts and ideas. We welcome the Edgewood Family to work in a unified manner toward a common goal.

Who’s Packing Your Parachute? US jet fighter pilot in Vietnam, Charles Plumb, had completed 75 combat missions when he was shot down. Plumb was ejected and parachuted into enemy hands, where he spent six years in a Vietnamese prison. One day, a man came up to him and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier, Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” Plumb was confused and asked how the man knew about that.
“I packed your parachute,” the man replied.
The man then shook his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Plumb assured him it had and said, “If that chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” Plumb thought a lot about that man who held the fate of someone he did not even know, in his hands. He kept pondering how many times he might have seen the guy, and not even said anything because he was a fighter pilot and the stranger was just a sailor.”
Charles Plumb is now a motivational speaker telling this story to hundreds. After telling it, he always asks his audiences,
“Who’s packing your parachute?” In our life, be it personal or work related, many people have a hand in our parachutes. Are you taking the time to acknowledge, thank, and reward them? It is very easy to overlook the work of many. It takes a lot of people to create a team. #whoispackingyourparachute

Edgewood will welcome 'Art Goes To School’, the week of March 19-23, during scheduled art classes. AGTS is a volunteer organization that brings art appreciation to elementary schools throughout Bucks County. Grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to view an extensive portfolio of interesting painting, prints, and sculpture reproductions of various artists. The portfolio usually includes African, African American, American, Asian, European, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and Native American works of art. In the past, students have really enjoyed the visit so don't forget to ask them questions about what they have learned!

Mindful Parenting Forum Update: Music lessons, sports practices. Math tutoring. CCD or Hebrew school. The list of activities that we run our kids to is endless. So often we do not focus on the moment and on our children in that moment. As you read this inhale and exhale. Think of the beauty of the day and not the stress.
Taking the time to truly focus on our parenting skills is hard. This group has spent the fall semester discussing the book Everyday Blessings: the inner work of mindful parenting by Myla and Jon Kabat-Zinn. We are now moving on to activities that will take just 1 hour of time where we can work on the skills of mindfulness. The various exercises are all inspired from what our children are learning with Project Mindfulness. JOIN US!

5th Graders sang at the Globe Trotter’s Game
Tiger Treats Phys. Ed and Music came together the week of February 22-28. Mr. Gallo and Mrs. Kimock joined forces to bring Drums Alive to all K-5 students at Edgewood. Drums Alive (a.k.a. Fitness Drumming) brings together exercise, music, beats, rhythms and drumming using upbeat music. This form of exercise, using physio balls and drumsticks, increases heart rate and practices with listening while following a music form--all while bringing out the inner drummer in us all!. Classes were able to participate on their gym AND music days, so they got to have double the fun! By now, hopefully you've heard about how much fun this was. Even our custodians, cafeteria friends, paraprofessionals and teachers grabbed drum sticks and joined in! All students did a fabulous job!

Edgewood's School-Wide Valentine's service learning project, The Color of Kindness, will touch the lives of many people. Trish Shallenberger, founder of A Soldier's Hands, is extremely grateful for the partnership and will be sure that our children's letters make it aboard the USS Reagan and get into the hands of the sailors along with great skincare products she provides from Mary Kay Cosmetics! Our crayon collection is exploding as well and will provide colorful inspiration and love to children in hospitals near and far as well as help our planet by keeping crayons out of landfills! Edgewood Students on the “CUTTING EDGE” of CHARACTER ED!
����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ ����������� ������������������ A trio of 4th grade boys is going to participate in shaving their heads to raise money toward childhood cancer research for St. Baldrick's again this year. Last year Demetri Tarasov, Matt Hammer, and Jimmy Iacona raised a combined total of $2,705. The LIS Super Shavers Team raised $39,563. With an Amalfi's event total of $160,914.00. It is Matt and Jimmy's 2nd year participating and Demetri's 4th year. The event is going to be held at Amalfi's restaurant in Lawrenceville, NJ on March 10th from 11 - 5. Mrs. Shiller’s 4th Grade Presents: HAIL TO THE CHIEF & FIRST LADIES!

Storyboard Overview
Timeline: Fri., March 2 – “Read Across America Day’ - Kickoff with samples displayed in library. Fri. March 16 – Storyboard proposals submitted for approval.
Fri. March 23 – Proposals returned to families.
Mon. April 23 through Thurs. April 26 – Students bring storyboards into school and drop them off at the library. The boards will be placed in an assigned spot for you by the Literacy Team. You may set up any extra display pieces when you arrive at the fair that evening.
Requirements: *You may work as an individual, with a partner, or as a family group to create a storyboard.
*Display board is a tri-fold panel no larger than 36” tall by 48” wide. You will also have a small amount of space directly in front of your board to display items such as a copy of your book, copies of an activity page you made, etc.. if you choose.
*Display must include your name, the title of your book, author, and illustrator (if applicable), and at least 3 story elements. The story elements you should choose from are setting, characters, plot, conflict/solution, tone, or theme. The way that you present these story elements on your board is up to you.
*Display should include some type of recommendation, possibly in response to: ‘If you like books that ____________________ , this is the book for you.’
‘I would recommend this book to ___________________ because_______.’
Suggestions: *Be creative and celebrate the book in a way that inspires you!
*You are welcome to dress like a character from your featured book or as the author of the book. Some students create an activity to go with it such as a word search or bookmark - this is a completely optional addition.
*You do not have to stand with your display the whole evening but we ask that each student pick a half hour block to stay with their display.

Storyboard Proposal In addition to the amazing artwork on display in the gymnasium, we plan to fill our library with displays that celebrate literacy. You are
invited to create a storyboard that highlights one of your favorite books!
There are sample storyboards on display in the library for inspiration.

This year’s GAL AND HER PAL as well as the GUY AND HIS GAL Fun Nights will both be held at the NAC Sports Training Center. The address is 120 Pheasant Run, located in front of the NAC.
Please join us for a fun filled evening full of games, dance, and team spirit! No athletic ability is required to participate but sneakers are a must!
This is not a drop off event. Both evenings have been designed to allow students to spend time with their families and friends. We understand that circumstances may not allow every child to attend with a parent so feel free to bring a special person instead!
