Edgewood Elementary Discover Your Inner SUPER HERO! January, 2018
Main PTO page - http://edgewoodroar.weebly.com 1
Dear Edgewood Community, Monday, January 15, 2018, marks the celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. In coordination with all District elementary schools, we are pleased to announce our first annual collaborative Day of Service initiative. Our objective is to establish a collective goal of honoring service in and among the Pennsbury community. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform his legacy, life, and teachings into community service, which helps empower and strengthen local relationships. In the words of Dr. King, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” In an effort to promote civic engagement and model the importance of serving community, we have arranged for a variety of activities across partnering schools, to make this day off from school, a day on in servitude. All schools will be collecting items for a variety of needs, services, and community partners. Please view the list below and drop off any donations to the collection boxes located in each of our elementary schools. All donations will be sorted as one activity of volunteerism during the Day of Service events. Other activities for the day include (materials to be provided): letters to veterans, no-sew blanket making, and a Service Day scavenger hunt. We look forward to our first annual collaborative Service Day. *Please note that due to space conflicts, only 20 students per elementary school will be attending on behalf of our community. A lottery was held and students chosen have already been notified. We do hope to expand the project in future years.

”A young boy and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly,
his son falls, hurts himself and screams: “AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!" To his
surprise, he hears the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain:
"AAAhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
Curious, he yells: “Hello!" He receives the answer: “Hello!"; And then
he screams to the mountain: “You’re awesome!”; The voice answers:
“You’re awesome!” He continues experimenting: “Loser!" He receives
the answer: "Loser!" “You are a hero!” The voice returns, “You are a
hero!”
He looks to his father and asks: "What's going on?". The father smiles
and says: "My son, pay attention." The father screams: "You are a
champion!" The voice answers: "You are a champion!” Then one last
time he yells, “I love you!” The words, “I love you!” come back loud
and clear.
The boy is surprised, but does not understand. Then the father
explains: “This is called an ECHO, but really this is LIFE. It gives you
back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection of our
actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your
heart. If you want to experience more joy, give more joy to others. If
you want a kinder community, show kindness wherever you are. This
relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life. Life will give you
back everything you have given to it.” What will your ECHO say in 2018?

The bestselling author of Wherever You

Living joins forces with his wife, Myla, in
this groundbreaking revised edition
(released in October, 2014) of the classic
book about mindfulness in parenting
children of all ages. Updated with new material--including an all
new introduction and expanded practices in the
epilogue-- Everyday Blessings remains one of the few books on
parenting that embraces the emotional, intuitive, and deeply
personal experience of being a parent, applying the
groundbreaking "mind/body connection" expertise from global
mindfulness leader, Jon Kabat-Zinn and his wife, Myla
Kabat-Zinn.
With the growing interest in mindfulness as a way of living, and
with increasing scientific evidence of its value for optimal health
and well-being, including a new field in psychology devoted to
mindful parenting, and with mindfulness being increasingly
integrated into K-12 education, there has never been a better
time for cultivating greater mindfulness in parenting and in
family life.A

The temperatures outside may be dropping, but things were HEATING UP inside as we counted Box Tops for Contest #1. Official results as of December 22, 2017 show 16,455 Box Tops, which will translate into $1,645.50 of funds for Edgewood! Mr. Bloom’s class came in first place with 2,471 Box Tops, and Miss Popp’s class turned in an impressive 1,927 Box Tops for second place. In third, fourth, and fifth places were the classes of: Miss Pezza, Mrs. Bagley, and Mrs. Bergen, respectively. The next contest is officially underway, which is a grade level contest where the entire grade with the most Box Tops will win a party, so keep clipping! Thank you for helping to make a difference for Edgewood through Box Tops!
FUEL UP TO PLAY60 - Thanks and “We need you!” The Fuel Up to Play 60 program has been going strong again this fall. We are now in our 7th year at Edgewood and the students and parent helpers have helped it to grow. WE NEED your help parents…Recess help is essential! Check the sign up Genius to help out when it works best for you. We meet every Tuesday, weather permitting. No special skills or training needed. Just people to help us have a little fun!
The 5th grade Fuel Up team has been working hard to get our school up and active. We hosted our 3rd JAM on the Hill in October. 2017 JAM on the Hill was a HUGE success. We had a beautiful day and we took advantage! Play 60 team members led the entire school in the Fuel Up Kick Off event. The student team invited all students, staff, and PTO parents to join us for a movement activity to get everyone excited to move this year and Play 60! The Fuel Up team stood at the top and the bottom of the large playground hill. Team members chose exercises and pumped up the school. We had popular music and speaker boxes and microphone to help us JAM out and keep the energy up!
Some members of our Fuel Up team had a terrific opportunity to attend events at two different NFL team stadiums! WOW!! It was AWESOME! 10 of our students were able to take a ride to the Baltimore Ravens stadium. This was a first for Edgewood as we were invited to join other “Touchdown” teams for a special event. We also had the chance to
have 11 students go to our very own Lincoln
Financial Field home of the 13-3 Philadelphia
Eagles! Both groups were able to meet NFL players including Mike Quick of the Eagles. The teams competed in a “Shark Tank” style Innovation
Challenge to win grant money. Our Edgewood team won $500 toward healthy eating “plays” they will run at school. The kids are working right now on our two healthy eating “plays.” We will host a Fuel Up Food
Fair event on Jan 10 and 11 in the morning for all students grades 1-5. We will also hold our 5th annual Super Bowl Taste Test on Jan 31 and Feb 1st at lunch time. If you are able to help or would like to find out more about either of these events or helping at recess contact Mr. Gallo [email protected] or check out the sign up Genius on the PTO web site. Have a wonderful, active, and healthy new year!
