T he Hamptons look that has captured our hearts is synonymous

with elegant beachside living, conjuring up images of comfort,

relaxation, leisure time and understated auence. The style takes

inspiration from the luxury weekenders, holiday homes and inviting

Modest and understated, the original Hamptons homes

were typically no-fuss homesteads built by the farmers,

herders and craftspeople who arrived from Massachusetts

to settle in the area in the early 1600s. The architecture

initially had a utilitarian focus, taking into account the

harsh weather and the limited availability of materials.

Over time, other settlers arrived, bringing with them

American Colonial, Georgian, Tudor and Mediterranean

inuences. When New York’s wealthy came in search of a

beachside retreat in the early 20th Century, they

embraced the character of the Hamptons to create

expensive summer homes that increasingly became more

detailed and more elaborate, yet maintained an inherent

Making it our ownToday’s Hamptons style perfectly suits Perth’s hot and sunny climate,

its building materials and its construction techniques. Our take on

this classic look often includes wrap-around porches or deep

verandas to shade us from the summer sun, while contemporary

cladding and roong materials take the place of the traditional timber

weatherboards and rustic shingles that protected the original

Hamptons homes from the salty sea air and coastal winds of Long

Island. There are dramatic elements, but nothing is too dressy. We’ve

taken this popular style and made ‘classic’ contemporary. After all,

classic homes pull at our heartstrings, reminding us that we’re happy

to be emotionally invested in our home and how we spend our time

there.

Design detailsMaterials include stone, render and painted weatherboards. Rooines

are interesting, but relatively simple, sometimes with roof overhangs.

The exterior colour palette embraces soft blues and greys, oset by

crisp white detailing. Window reveals add depth and texture, as well

as light and shade to the exterior, which looks good from all angles.

Rooms are ooded with natural light, with well-positioned windows

and double glazed doors, often featuring glazing bars. Cornices are

substantial, ceilings are high, often with deep recessed sections, and

timber joinery includes skirting boards, architraves, panelling,

balustrading and windowsills.

Finishing touchesFloors are typically stone or timber. Oak is a popular choice, as is

jarrah or Tasmanian Oak stained ebony in classic Hamptons fashion.

Crisp, white-painted joinery accentuates detailing, while the colour

palette embraces white and neutral tones, soft blues, dove greys and

gentle greens. Soft furnishings feature pops of soft colour, such as

duck-egg blue and soft green, as well as navy and charcoal. Textiles

include linen, sheers and velvet, complimenting delicate touches in

pewter, antique silver and vintage black.

than the Hamptons look. Dierent colour palettes also help distinguish the three styles.
