ARTHAMPTONSWelcome to Art Hamptons 2016. This year marks the 9th edition of the fair and we thank our longtime and new exhibitors, Host Committee, Cultural Partners, and sponsors for their support of the fair.
First and foremost, we would like to thank our gracious and generous hosts, Maria and Kenneth Fishel, who have shared their beautiful estate for our fair. Thank you, Maria and Kenneth, for your support and for extending such a wonderful welcome to our fair, exhibitors, and attendees.
We also want to thank LongHouse Reserve and the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, both of which are beneficiaries of our Opening Night Preview. We are proud to work with these prestigious organizations and thank them for their support. New this year to Art Hamptons is our Host Committee and this inaugural group of distinguished individuals has been generous with their time to lend us their patronage this year. Co-chaired by Maria and Kenneth Fishel and Jack Lenor Larsen, we are honored by their advocacy. Please join us on Opening Night for the ribbon cutting to officially open the fair with remarks by Maria and Kenneth, Jack, and Dr. Samuel Waxman.
Also being introduced this year are the Best Booth and Best Artwork Awards to be chosen and bestowed by LongHouse Reserve. Thank you, Jack Lenor Larsen. We are eager to see who wins these coveted awards!
The Programming and Events for this year’s fair offer great insight into the arts, both here in the Hamptons and on a wider scale. Be sure to take advantage of these rich conversations with luminaries such as: designers Amy Lau and Suzanne Lovell; Carole Rosenberg, President of the American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation Cuba; Helen Harrison, Director of the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center; and Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director and Chief Curator of Guild Hall, among many others.

VIP Private Tour LongHouse Reserve is a 16-acre reserve and sculpture garden located in East Hampton, NY. As part of their internationally recognized Art in the Gardens program, Jack Lenor Larsen and the LHR Arts Committee have assembled a collection of more than 60 contemporary sculptures including pieces by Buckminster Fuller, Yoko Ono and William De Kooning to name a few in the LongHouse gardens along with those on seasonal loan from artists, collectors, and dealers.

Anthony Liggins: Art is Love, Love is an ArtThe award-winning Art is Love, Love is an Art is a visual look book of artist Anthony Liggins’ 17 years spent crafting abstract dream-scapes that transcend the limitations of language. This 200-page publication captures Liggins’ artwork, his collectors and the influences that have inspired him. The artist will be available to sign copies of this volume.

Jean-Marie Haessle: Meet the ArtistVIP Event - RSVP RequiredArtist Jean-Marie Haessle will present his recent work and talk about his career as an artist in New York City. A catalog signing will follow the discussion.
Haessle’s unique sense of color forms the basis of remarkably structured works of art. The molten hues he invests the painting with furnish a supporting structure for the composition. Who would have thought that so much could be done with color alone? Haessle’s imagination leaps and bounds as it has done for more than four decades, leaving a heritage that is as expansive as it is intelligent. Gavin Rain: Hidden in Plain SightGallery owner Edward Fong will give a presentation on the work by pointillism artist Gavin Rain. Up close, Rain’s paintings consist of small concentric dots painted in different colors of acrylic paint. From a distance, the eye views the image as a whole, and a naturalistic portrait is revealed. The farther the viewer steps back, the clearer the image becomes. Fong will discuss this technique and tricks for viewing Rain’s work.

Book Signing: Marcia Resnick, Punks, Poets & Provocateurs“The people from the extraordinary New York milieu amongst whom I was living and working had no way of knowing that the years between 1977 and 1982 were enchanted, endangered, and unrepeatable,” explains photographer Marcia Resnick. It was a time and place populated by icons, iconoclasts, and antiheroes whom Resnick documented with a unique and evocative eye. Here, her photographs of the “enfants terribles” reflect this unique time in the worlds of jazz, rock and roll, literature, art, and film — an era that remains highly influential. Rockers Johnny Thunders, Joey Ramone, James Brown, Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Brian Eno, and Mick Jagger; beat poets William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Gregory Corso; and provocateurs and raconteurs John Waters, Steve Rubell, Gary Indiana, Abbie Hoffman, Norman Mailer, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the incomparable John Belushi are included here, along with text by Victor Bockris and contemporary writings that create a context for Resnick’s photography from this inimitable era.

Americas Society Private Tour Led by Arlene BujeseFollowing an early career as and exhibiting artist and educator, Hamptonite Arlene Bujese has built a long history of supporting the arts on the East End as a gallerist/art dealer, curator and fundraiser. She currently serves as a curator for the Southampton Cultural Center’s art gallery and is a member of the East End Hospice’s Board of Directors.

Michael Alfano: Influences and PurposeSculptor Michael Alfano’s philosophical figurative work transforms classical imagery to resonate today. Michael will discuss his infusion of symbols into sculpture to provoke exploration and continual reinterpretation. Working as a sculptor for two decades, Michael has over 20 public commissions and his pieces may be found in important collections worldwide.

Cuban Art TodayThe societal, cultural, and economic changes in and outside of Cuba during the past couple of decades have visibly affected the art produced in this Caribbean country. Carole Rosenberg, President, American Friends of Ludwig Foundation Cuba, Luis Miret, gallery director, Galeria Habana, and Tonel, artist, critic, and curator, will describe and discuss important segments of Cuban art “of the moment,” as we move further into the second decade of the twenty-first century. The panelists will address role of the art market and of local and foreign collectors, as well as the globalized situation in which Cuban art participates today. The works and artists that will be covered are essential to Havana’s current, dynamic art scene. Presented in conjunction with the Special Exhibit ARTCHIPELAGO: Because Every Artist is an Island, presented at Art Hamptons by Galeria Habana.

The Allure of the East EndSince the 1880s artists have come to the East End to seek a particular seaside light and comradery with other artists. In the 1950’s it was the shared artistic spirit that led artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Rauschenberg to escape the city in favor of the summertime quietude, not to mention the cheap rent that the East End offered. Between studio visits and group exhibitions, these artists would commune on the beach, taking part in intense philosophical discussions.
Panelists Helen Harrison, Director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director and Chief Curator, Guild Hall, and Dawn Watson, journalist and photographer, will discuss the significance of these artistic gatherings, as well as the East End’s continuing importance to the art world through the efforts of organizations like Guild Hall and the Parrish Museum. Moderated by Pat Rogers, Publisher and Managing Editor, Hamptons Art Hub.

The Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery opened in December 2009 in Stamford, CT. Since then, it has revolutionized the landscape of contemporary art in the state. Recently, it became the official sponsor of conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth’s exhibition at the Louvre. In partnership with the Tate and Frieze Art Fair, it led the transition of their acquisition fund from Outset International, until Ari Emanuel of WME took over in March 2016. Also in 2016, the gallery launched a new non-profit, Clementina Arts Foundation, to build on its mission. The gallery acquires and represents prominent estate collections, most recently acquiring the estate of Valerie Furth, Holocaust survivor turned important collector, painter and author.
