Scientistshavelookedattherelationshipbetweenviolentfilmsandchildren’sbehaviourforyears.Theyarenowstudyingtheeffectofcomputergamesonchildren.LynHender,seniorlecturerineducationalpsychology,focusesonhowthesegamesinfluencethewayteenagersthink.Shelookedatthirteenandfourteen-year-oldstudentsplayingfantasygamesoncomputers.
Shefoundthatbothweakandstrongstudentsclearlyusedcomplexthinkingskills.“Ithinkweneverreallyseetheadvantagesofsuchgamesineducation.Parentsandteachersdonotthinkoftheseasbeingeducationallyuseful,”DrHendersaid.
“Ithinkweonlyseetheaggressionandviolenceinthem.Ofcourse,somegamesarelikethat.Butthemajorityarenon-violentgamesthataregoodfordevelopingthemind.”Thestudentsplayedagamecalled“GetTheMoney,”inwhichagrouphavetomakemoneyinvariousways.Forthisgameyouneedtothinkinalmostthesamewaythatyouwouldinasportsgame.“Thisisnotaneasygame,…actually,youhavetouselogicaswellaschanginghowyouthink.”DrHenderstated.
Teachersweresurprisedtoseethatteenagerswhomtheythoughtwereweakstudentswereassuccessfulastheirstrongerclassmates.Sometimestheywereevenbetter.“Oneweakerstudentcompletedacomplexcardgameinwhichyouhadaboutninedifferentthingstoremember,”DrHendersaid.“Idiscoveredshediditveryeasily,butsomeofthestudentsIthoughtwerestronghadproblems.Ifoundthatnoneofthestudentshadanyproblemsconcentratingforalongtime.Theyweredeterminedtounderstandthegameandgetitright.”
DrHenderconcludedthatthegamesusedthesamesortofstrategiesthatwereveryvaluableinclassrooms.Teacherscouldtrytomakeuseofthesegamesanddesigntasksbasedonthemforstudentsinclass.‘Computersarenotjustahomeleisurething,’shesaid.
