Changing the SettingsWhen using this dictionary, you canactivate the Learn a Word feature,adjust the screen contrast, the shut-off time, and the type size. The shut-off time is how long your productstays on if you forget to turn it off.Learn a Word helps you increaseyour vocbulary by displaying a differ-ent headword and definition eachtime you turn on your dictionary.1. ✓ Understanding ThesaurusEntries
A thesaurus entry consists of agroup of synonyms, antonyms andclassmates. Synonyms are wordsthat have similar meanings, e.g.happy/joyous. Antonyms are wordsthat have the opposite meaning ofthe word being defined, e.g.,happy/unhappy. Classmates arewords that are related in some wayto the word being defined, e.g.octagon/polygon, triangle,rectangle, pentagon....

✓ Understanding FlashingMessages
When you first see a definition,notice the upper right corner of thescreen. Often either THES or CONF(or both) will flash briefly. THESmeans the word you looked up hasa thesaurus entry.If you see THES flash, press THESto view the thesaurus entry.CONF means the word you lookedup has a confusable. If you seeCONF flash, press CONF to view theconfusables.

✓ Understanding ConfusablesConfusables are homonyms, homo-phones and spelling variants thatare easy to confuse, e.g. rain, reign,rein. If the word you looked up is aconfusable, CONF will flash once inthe upper right of the screen. PressCONF to view the confusables.

Highlighting WordsAnother way to look up words is byhighlighting them in dictionaryentries, thesaurus entries or wordlists. You can then find their defini-tions, thesaurus entries, or add themto My Word List.1. At any text, press ENTER to
start the highlight.
To turn the highlight off, pressBACK.

Finding Letters in WordsIf you are uncertain about how tospell a word, type a question mark(?) in place of each unknown letter.To find prefixes, suffixes, and otherparts of words, type an asterisk (✽ ) ina word. Using a PasswordYou can use a password to preventunauthorized access to the Databank.Warning! Always write the password ina safe, separate location. If you lose orforget the password, you will be able touse the Databank again only by remov-ing the batteries from your BOOKMAN,which will permanently erase all theinformation stored in the Databank.

Installing Book Cards1. Turn your product off and turn it

✓ BOOKMAN CardTroubleshooting
Make sure your book card is installedcorrectly. If your card is performingerratically, follow the reset instruc-tions in “Resetting Your Product”. Ifthis does not fix the problem, removethe card and then remove the whiterubber strip with your fingers andthen replace it making sure it is com-pletely in its notch.
Using Function Keysin Book Cards
The function keys appear at the topof the keyboard on your unit. Thesekeys correspond in the order listed tothe dictionary and organizer keys atthe bottom of the screen. The diction-ary function keys change with the

book card. The organizer functionkeys are unaffected. Note: Once youaccess the organizer from a bookcard, you will exit the book card. Youmust press CARD and select yourbook card to return to it.The function keys on your unit corre-spond to the function keys on yourcard as illustrated below.

Transferring WordsBetween Books
This dictionary can transfer wordswith certain other BOOKMAN bookcards. To send a word to anotherbook, you must first install a bookcard in your product, and that bookcard must be able to send or receivewords. To learn if a book card cansend or receive words, read itsUser’s Guide.1. Highlight a word in this dictionary.
To highlight a word in a dictionaryentry, press ENTER to start thehighlight, and use the arrow keysto move the highlight to the wordyou want.
2. Hold FN and press CARD.3. Highlight the icon of the other
book.

4. Press ENTER.The word you highlighted appearsin the other book.
5. Press ENTER again, if needed,to search for that word.
Resetting Your ProductIf the keyboard fails to respond, or ifthe screen performs erratically, per-form a system reset by following thesteps below.1. Hold CLEAR and press .
If nothing happens, try Step 2.2. Use a paper clip to gently press
the reset button on your unit.The reset button is recessed in apin-sized hole below the bookcard slot.

Warning! Pressing the reset but-ton with more than light pressuremay permanently disable yourproduct. In addition, resettingproduct erases settings and infor-mation entered in its built-in book,and in an installed bookcard.

Franklinwarrants to the original end user that fora period of one (1) year from the origi-nal date of purchase as evidenced by acopy of your receipt, your franklin prod-uct shall be free from defects in materi-als and workmanship. This limited war-ranty does not include damage due toacts of god, accident, misuse, abuse,negligence, modification, unsuitableenvironment or improper maintenance.

The sole obligation and liability offranklin, and your exclusive remedyunder this limited warranty, will be repairor replacement with the same or anequivalent product of the defective por-tion of the product, at the sole option offranklin if it determines that the productwas defective and the defects arosewithin the duration of the limited warran-ty. This remedy is your exclusive reme-dy for breach of this warranty.
