This is the largest, most comprehensive flex schedule yet! We decided to roll out a new, (hopefully)

improved format to make it easier to see what the activity offerings are. There have never been so many

workshop options to pick from, so choose wisely!

Ways to view this schedule:

Look through the “schedule at-a-glance,” which is organized into 3 different categories: discipline specific, themed

workshop strands, and the technology track. This schedule provides a title, time slot & location only.

View the entire list of activities, including descriptions & presenters, in list format, organized by start time each day. This

schedule is located at the end of the “schedule at-a-glance.”

If you are looking for a specific activity, use “Ctrl + F” to search by title or keyword- huge time saver!

You’ll also find helpful tips and links to DVC resources embedded throughout the schedule-at-a-glance!

Ways to register for activities: On the schedule-at-a-glance, click the title of each activity you'd like to attend and it will direct you to the

registration page for that activity. Click the registration link under each activity description in list version of the schedule. Go to the DVC professional development registration page to view the entire list of activities and click the "enroll"

button next to each activity you'd like to register for:

https://webapps.4cd.edu/apps/ProfessionalDevelopment/WorkshopEnrollment.aspx?campus=dvc o To remove yourself from the roster of an activity you can no longer attend, use the same link and click "view

your workshops" near the top of the page. Find the activity in your list, and click the "remove" button next to it.

*Note: this will only work until the activity starts.

2019-2020 Flex Obligation for Full-time Faculty

There is a total 30-hour obligation for tenured full-time faculty, a 40-hour obligation for second year tenure track

faculty, and a 50-hour obligation for first year tenure track faculty (usually completed in Nexus).

There are 5 hours of Mandatory Flex each semester for a total of 10 mandatory hours per year.

Full-time “A” contract faculty may choose to complete their Flex obligation over the entire calendar year, July 1

through June 30.

Flex credit cannot be “banked” or “made up” from one academic year to another.

Fall 2019 Flex Obligation for Part-time “C” and “AC” Faculty

Part-time faculty have a Flex obligation that is directly related to compensation and the number of instructional days in the

semester. Flex obligation is based on the academic calendar, more specifically to the day of the week on which classes

begin and end.

Consequently, the Flex obligation is adjusted each semester. The semester start or end date can prevent a full 16-week

semester of class meetings. Part-time Flex obligation applies only to adjunct faculty who are teaching face-to-face, full-term

(16-week) classes (it does not apply to online, short-term or late start classes).

For Fall 2019, part-time instructors (and full-time faculty on AC contract) teaching a semester length, face-to-face class,

have a flex obligation that is equal to the number of instructional hours taught in a week on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays,

Fridays and Saturdays. In short, if you teach a full term, face-to-face class any day mentioned here, the number of hours of

your flex obligation are equal to the number of hours you teach on those days in one week. So if you teach 3 hours on

Wednesday, and 3 hours on Thursday, you only owe 3 hours. If you only teach on Tuesday or Wednesday, you do not have

a flex obligation for fall.

Flex activities must be completed during the semester they are required. “C” and “A/C” contract faculty may not bank

hours and use them in a different semester.

Note: non-instructional faculty (i.e., librarians and counselors) with no unit-bearing teaching load do not have a Flex

obligation.

“What if I say the wrong thing?” “What if I hurt someone’s feelings?” “Frankly, I’m tired

of having to listen to my students’ comments.” We all have thoughts about the

difficulties of discussing race, especially in the classroom. This workshop will give

participants a chance to practice strategies for conducting discussions about race.

Practitioners will be given strategies before they practice scenarios that will allow them

to role-play as both teacher and student in a fun and lively atmosphere. Let’s support

and encourage each other to have these difficult and necessary conversations.

FA19-239: Help Students Get to the Right Class: English First Two Weeks Enrollment Strategies

12:00pm-

1:00pm

This FLEX activity continues conversations started over the summer: How can we be

flexible during the add/drop period to help our students find the right path for them,

whether it’s English 122, English 122+120, or the ESL track? How can we support the

students sitting in front of us (no matter who they are)? This flex workshop will help us

address these important questions, both logistically (how can I help a student move

from 120, where she’s bored and languishing, to 122, where she’ll thrive?) and

philosophically (what should support look like in a stand-alone 122?). This workshop will

be especially useful to instructors teaching in the English First Weeks Enrollment Pilot,

which is meant to facilitate students finding the right course through instructor referral,

advising, and placement; however, this conversation is valuable for all 122, 122A, 120,

Being an adjunct in a collegiate environment is tough enough and many of us struggle with

how to make our way in what can be a goofy system. This can be especially true if you are

unaware of not only WHO TO ASK BUT WHAT TO ASK AS WELL. Come and connect with others

who are in the same position. We'll share, break bread, and hopefully provide a ton of answers

of how to survive and thrive in what can be a chaotic environment. Bring your questions,

stories, and concerns and let us help you better understand and navigate being an adjunct

at DVC.
