Bologna Process
The following principles are inherent to:– Mobility of students and staff;– Autonomous universities;– Student participation in governance of higher
education;– Public responsibility for higher education.
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 3
Implementation Priorities
• The two-cycle degree system;
• Quality assurance;
• Recognition of degrees and periods of studies.
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 4
Aims for an European Higher Education
• Adoption of a system of easily readable and comparable degrees
• Adoption of a system essentially based on two cycles• Establishment of a system of credits• Promotion of mobility• Promotion of European co-operation in quality assurance• Promotion of the European dimension in higher
education• Lifelong learning
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 5
New Curriculum in ECE
• ECE curriculum for education in Engineering for Design;
• Duration of 2 first cycles of 5 years as necessary condition for a more theoretical and deep education, so answering to a stable and consolidated practice in European Union.
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 6

Issues
According to CDIO code, an Engineer must be skilled to:
• conceive-design-implement-operate
• complex aided-value engineering systems
• in a modern environment of team-working
• and to have a mature personality, and capacity of initiative.
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 8
CDIO abilities for common ECE syllabus
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 9
According to general goals for Integrated Master degree, the student must be able
• to handle new and non-familiar situations, within large and multidisciplinary contexts;
• to collect, select and interpret relevant information in order to fundament the solutions which presents and the performed analysis
• to integrate knowledge• to communicate clearly and objectively his
conclusions either to expert people or to non-expert people
• to prosecute long-life learning, in an auto-orientated and autonomous way, demonstrating a pro-active attitude faced to knowledge
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 10
Planning and Coordination Mechanisms
Implementation of the curriculum supported on individual cards for the courses
establishment of the competencies to get,syllabus, teaching methods,adopted tools, evaluation method, working load for each planned task,requirements for a good performance
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 11
Assessment of objectives
performed through three programmes developed by the Faculty of Engineering
• Sensor I – Learning Process
• Sensor II – Pedagogical Quality
• Sensor III – Impact of Education on Professional Activity
FEUP, Porto, 2008/02/22 12
Conclusion
The communication summarily describes the new curriculum in ECE,
developed within the scope of Bologna process, showing some of the issues
related to its implementation and how Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto
is facing them and which mechanisms have implemented in order to accelerate the process in a controlled way.
