The local context• Included between 2 corridors
• Relevant sector of transport and logistics (22% of Lombardy Company)
• High level of development of intermodality (8% of total Lombardy movements)
• High level of fragmentation of freight transport offer
• Number of industrials clusters
• The most significant area for the internal waterway transport
24% of total workforce employed in road transport and logistics firms in Lombardy
EASTERN LOMBARDY ECONOMICAL CONTEXT
22% of all road transport and logistics firms in Lombardy
3% of total firms and workforce employed in road transport and logistics in Italy
90,5% of road transport firms with less than 5 persons employed
SOME FACTS
The local context
Background – barriers to the development of intermodality
Need for promotion and a more efficient use of rail, intermodal and inland waterways transport nodes
Existence of barriers for intermodal transport compared with road transport: cost and quality factors
Lack of knowledge of rail and inland waterways transport opportunities
Fragmentation of transport firms structure
SMEs and transport operators performing road transport in presence of intermodal compatible goods
Intermodal operators focusing on great volume customers
Lack of information: competence centres, management and promotion agencies, modal choice tools (software)

IntermodalityIntermodal freight transport involves the transportation of freight in a container or vehicle, using multiple modes of transportation (rail, ship, and truck), without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes.The method reduces cargo handling, and so improves security, may reduce damages and loss, and may allow freight to be transported faster.Reduced cost versus over the road trucking is the key benefit for intracontinental use.
The TraLoTra Group
Project objectives enhance the professional skill of personnel and management of
transport and logistics companies;
enhance the professional skill of personnel in force at Public Agencies for intermodal transport and logistics promotion, in order to improve the specific transport and logistics knowledge for human resources whose activity is mainly aimed at ensuring a public-side interface for territorial “logistics key players”;
improve the attractiveness of intermodal and other forms of sustainable freight transport.
Project impacts Whilst the later are related to the development of a European-wide platform for e-
learning in the field of intermodal and other sustainable forms of transport, in the short term (i.e. project lifetime) the project will bring immediate results related to the opportunity to train workforce and disseminate e-learning concepts.
Encouraging and enabling SME' s to participate in multimodal supply chains will lead to increased transport bundling opportunities and a (not easily quantifiable) shift of long haul freight transports from road to rail, SSS and inland water ways. The combination of these effects is expected to reduce the detrimental impact of transport on the environment.
Education cost savings through sharing scarce resources and skills in a transnational virtual training centre, the deployment of innovative techniques (e.g. blended learning) and technology (Video Conferencing). Easy access to better quality education by virtue of having access to and sharing the expertise of international specialists and experts.
Practitioners, manager and employees consuming the training offerings will improve their chances of finding new, challenging and rewarding employment opportunities; companies challenged to embrace intermodal transport concepts will be able to staff these projects with well trained experts.
