Nutrition while training Anythingandeverything.Wedoalotofendurancetraining, which takes a lot of energy, so personally I struggle to keep weight on and get too skinny. Sometimes eating becomes a chore because we have to eat so much.
Firstly, I try to eat healthy, nutritious things, so I get my 5+ fruit and veggies per day. After that it is just about getting calories in, so anything goes. If I am really struggling, then I have a meal replacement shake after dinnerforanextrameal.
Worst injury Separated shoulder from cyclist vs. truck accident (I lost). Bulged disc in my lower back from too much rowing. Rib stress fractures from too much rowing.
What I’d be doing if I wasn’t an athlete Probably working in an office somewhere.
Trivia Whentraininghard,Iliketohavea1hournapjustbefore lunch. Over the course of a week, that almost totals up to another night’s sleep. Athletes can never get too much sleep.

Most important support person CraigPalmer.HehasbeenwithmesincethefirstdayIsteppedonabike.Hehasbeenmycoach,mynumber one support person and now is my fiancé. WehaveauniquerelationshipandIwouldn’thaveachieved any of my sporting dreams without him.
Training regime It depends what phase of the season I’m in, but during base phase I would do between 350 and 450km/week of riding, plus 3 gym/weights sessions a week. Also massage and physio treatments are important to keep the body in top working order.
During track season, our mileage comes down and theintensityofthetrainingincreases.Wespendalotmore time on the velodrome doing short (500m–4km) repetitionsatamaximalpace.Tracksessionslast3–4hrs, normally 9am–12pm with a 1.5–2hr road ride in the afternoon following track.
Nutrition while training I’m a big believer in everything in moderation. I don’t have a really fancy diet, it’s more about getting enough fuel into my body to allow it to train and recover and train again. I eat a lot of rice, with stir-fries and also creamed rice as a pre- or post-training snack. Protein is also a really important component of my diet to help build and repair muscle. This mostly comes in the form of red meat – I eat beef or lamb 4–5 times a week. And then top off the carbs and protein with lots of fruit and veggies and I have a great performance diet.

Training regime Wetrain2–3timesaday,andgetWednesdayafternoons and Sundays off. So it’s anywhere from 4–7 hours a day at the lake, mainly rowing, but also warming up and down, stretching and various other exercisestokeepushealthyandstopusgettinginjured. It also involves getting up early (around 6am) to have breakfast early enough before we row. Getting a lot of sleep is also very important in our training, to make sure we recover to be able to train day after day.
Nutrition while training WeeatALOToffood...Wehavetoinordertotrainasmuchaswedo.Wehavetokeepeverythingsubstantial, so lots of veggies, pasta, rice, potatoes, meats.WehavethreeBIGmealsaday, andthenalsohave a lot of snacks after training, like muesli bars and fruit, tokeepusgoing.Wecanhavetheoccasional‘treat’ such as takeaways, but everything is always in moderation. If you eat too much junk food, then it’s bad for your health!
Worst injury I’ve never really been injured while rowing. I’ve had a few niggling things like a sore wrist or back, but the only major thing I’ve done was slip and put my hand through a glass window, which cut some tendons in my hand. I had to have surgery on themtofixit.Sothatwasmajor, but it was when I was relatively young. The great thing is that I’ve never broken a bone in my body!
What I’d be doing if I wasn’t an athlete I’m not sure... I think I would still be playing a lot of sport, but I’m just not sure if it would
have been full-time, like rowing is. I think I may have become a vet, or followed some other path down a science or agricultural route.
Trivia I can’t seem to sit still and I fidget all the time and it tendstodrivepeoplecrazy!
The only ritual I have is to keep my handlebar moustache which I always have when I race.
