Abstract

The NH13 is to be upgraded to a four lane highway from a two lane

highway. The stretch modified is five kilometer long starting from

(646721.176, 1655881.061) and ending at (647444.850, 1658756.352).

The existing two lane width is 3.5 meters and with shoulders on either

side roughly 1.5 meter. This is to be up-graded to a four lane national

highway of 7 meter carriageway, 1.5 meter hard shoulder and 1 meter

Earth shoulder on either side of a 5m median. The four lane highway

should be able to cater a design speed of 80 Kmph.

Data and constraints

Data:

Levels are provided at every 10 meter along longitudinal section.

The Carriageway should cater 150MSA traffic loading.

The CBR value of pavement is 5%.

The design of pavement is done in accordance with IRC-37.

Coordinates of wall (left): 646916.245, 1656830.393 (CL start)

646891.321, 1656874.478 (CL end)

Coordinates of wall (right): 646825.115, 1656985.391 (CL start)

646808.021, 1657031.127 (CL End)

Coordinates of Temple: 646947.084, 1656713.089 (CL)

Constraints:

The Proposed alignment should not cross the irrigation lines at skew.

The Temple cannot be demolished.

The two walls are to be avoided.

As per IRC-37 pavement cross-section has four layers

1. Base Course- 50 mm

2. DBM- 145 mm

3. Granular Base- 250mm

4. Granular Sub Base- 300 mm

Outcome

Conclusion

The national highway 13 is upgraded to a 4 lane

highway with the required design speed of 80 Kmph

Without demolishing the Temple, Walls. There are 3

curves in the new alignment. One reverse curve and

the rest two normal curves. The vertical alignment is

done such that cut fill ratio is equal making the

design economical.
