The youth of today seem to be under some sort of illusion that to have a good time you need to be under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs. One drug that has become extremely popular in the party scene over the last two years is Mephedrone which is also known as meow, which can be described as a cross between cocaine and MDMA or Ecstasy. It is highly addictive and can cause high blood pressure and will cause strain on the heart. It also causes the skin to turn purple mainly your knees & hands if you binge on it, plus all the wonderful other problems stimulants cause neurotoxicity. Furthermore you become extremely talkative and almost develop a new found confidence which doesn’t last I might add.

Although it may be legal at this moment in time it is illegal to sell for Human Consumption in the UK. It still could be damaging to your health if you take into account the long run. Mephedrone is now banned from the following countries Australia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Norway, Estonia, Sweden, and Romania. It is just a matter of time before it is illegal in the UK .

The drug can allow you to make fun out of a boring situation, allow you to feel good about yourself and forget all your worries and problems, but the after effects are far worse than the high. You can suffer from bad stomach pains, a rush of depression and in some cases paranoia.

As an A-level student myself, I can understand that you can get given a large workload, which can result in high levels of stress, but there are many other ways to relieve stress such as sport, hanging out with friends, relaxing…etc . Is it really worth risking your health for a few hours of pleasure?

Most people start on one line of meth thinking it will not harm them but as you become addicted

your body almost becomes immune to the effects of the drug meaning you have to increase the dosage of the drug to feel the full effect.

As the use of drugs are illegal and don’t go through professional medical checks, do you really know what you are taking? There has been cases were dealers have mixed the legal drug meth with illegal substances such as speed and crystal meth which are highly addictive in the hope that you will return to buy more.

Is it really worth the risk? Flush it down the toilet before you flush away your life.

by Justin Glancy

On 7 April 2010 the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (Amendment) Order 2010 was passed by parliament, making mephedrone and other substituted cathinones Class B drugs from 16 April 2010.

Fashion comes and goes in the world that we live in today but one trend that seems to be sticking in youth culture is the constant consumption of alcohol and drugs

Alexander McQueen By Ledina Gashi

Lee McQueen was a famous British fashion designer, who was well known for his dramatic and experimental pieces of exquisite art. Graduating at The Saint Martin’s College Of Art and Design, McQueen was discovered by Isabella Blow who was an international style icon, brought his graduate collection for £5,000. This helped him succeed in the fashion industry and land himself big promotions. In 1996 he was chosen to represent Givenchy as head designer. He then started his own label which was called Alexander McQueen. His label turned out to be a huge success in fashion and he was named the Best British designer of the year four times and McQueen received a CBE in 2003 from the Queen. His dramatic designs were worn by celebrities such as Lady

Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Björk, Rihanna and Victoria Beckham. Lady Gaga has worn Alexander McQueen pieces in her music videos her bad romance video has a pieces of McQueen’s spring/ summer collection of 2010. McQueen finished designing his new collection days before he passed away. This collection was revealed to the press and nation at Paris Fashion Week. The collection stunned and amazed people worldwide because he had put so much imagination and detail into his designs. The collection was made up of gold and

red colours which represented elegance but he also mixed with rock because of the biker boots. McQueen inspired me and millions of other designers worldwide to achieve your dreams and he will be remembered forever.

The man who stunned the world of fashion and who brought the concept of art and fashion together will always be missed

To drink or not to drink?by Justin Glancy

An extremely large percentage of teenagers are breaking this law by consuming alcohol, but they aren’t just drinking for the benefit of being social, they are drinking to the excess until they are physically sick or unconscious.

It seems to be because there isn’t any external damage, no visible problem that they feel they can indulge whenever they feel like it.

Some teenagers are under the impression that there won’t be any consequences to their actions. But eventually the excessive amounts of alcohol will poison their liver. Furthermore research has also shown that memory may be negatively affected by about 10% as a result of alcohol abuse. Drinking alcohol leads to a loss of coordination, poor judgment, slowed reflexes, distorted vision, and even blackouts. Even for an adult this isn’t something you should be taking part in but the consequences run deeper for teens as the body stops developing officially at 25 years of age, therefore showing that teenagers are more at risk than adults as they are still growing and developing. Adolescence is a period of profound brain maturation thereby constantly consuming alcohol at such a tender age can have a lifetime effect on the brain and other organs, it can also increase your chance of cancer. It could be argued that not every young person is drinking because it was their choice but they may have been pressured by friends or work colleges which is better known as ‘peer pressure’ Some people may drink because they are afraid of being rejected by others, want to be liked and don’t want

to lose a friend, don’t know how to get out of the situation…etc. If they really are your friends should you be in a situation where you feel pressured to do something merely because others are doing so?

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU LET SOMEONE DICTATE YOUR CHOICES!

At the end of the day you are the author of your life and all decisions are down to you.

Teenage drinking has become one of the largest social issues among young people. Drinking under the age of 18 is illegal in the UK but there isn’t really any form of punishment if caught with or drinking alcohol.

Knives are for cooking not killing!by Christianna Andrews

Yes. Another one. Another article about the same story going on for years surrounding the media. But this is not

going to be those regular ones from an adult’s perspective. Its going to be a story written from a teenager, myself. People wonder why teenagers get criticised by the media, well one reason could be that the ongoing stabbings are just being continued…and the media frenzy that surrounds it!

It’s starting to feel like its getting out of hand now. However the home office say that killing by knife crime is falling. “Between April and September 2009 we saw murder using a knife fall by 34 per cent, compared to the same period the previous year” (www.homeoffice.co.uk).

And yet another teenager has gone. I was sitting down watching the news on a Monday night, just like many people did, when the victim’s mother was crying out for any witnesses on her son’s death. It finally hit me. Another teenager in North London has died. Godwin was a normal 17 year old

boy. I didn’t know him personally but I know many people who did. Seeing how it’s affected them, hurts me. But the two people who my heart goes out to are his parents; this goes for all the others too.

Nana-Serwah Ossei from St Anne’s has commented that “it’s so sad to know another life is gone. We are just starting our lives, no one has the right to end another’s, its getting too much now. Don’t they feel bad when they see a mother crying on the news, what if it was your mum? Teenagers need to focus on positive things and just leave the violence and knife crime behind”.

Most teenagers don’t go around killing others. So what are the ones that do thinking of ? Do you think it’s funny how a mother has to bury her own son? A son who hasn’t even lived his life yet. Each week the equivalent of an entire school class, more than 20 kids ends up in hospital with knife injuries in

England alone.

BROOKE KINSELLA WRITES: “Having lost my brother Ben at 16

when he should have been just beginning his life, I am a true victim of knife crime.

I have lost the chance to be a big sister, to see him grow up, to be successful, to meet the love of his life. My brother is now just another statistic. I pray every night somebody else’s brother doesn’t become one too.”

Adults are going on about things that need to be done to stop this. But what can they do? What can anyone do? What can you do when prison doesn’t seem enough of a deterrent? Twenty-five years is the usual sentence for stabbing (and killing) someone. But did you know for good behaviour this can

decrease by five years. Is prison seen as a soft option? A roof over your head, free food, TV? What is the reality of prison for young offenders? Maybe this should be taught to us in school?

How can anyone take someone’s life like that? Don’t they have a conscience? My guess is no. They know exactly what they’re doing. They know as soon as you stab someone in the chest with a knife, their heart will stop, and just like that, their life has gone. Ended forever. I can’t even bare myself to think about losing someone close like that. An innocent person, just gone. It’s not something you want to think about? But why has it come to this? Why does it have to stay like this? Someone needs to put an end to it. Sooner rather then later. And who can put a stop to it, young people themselves need to take a stand.

“…Teenagers need to focus on positive things and just leave the violence and knife crime behind”.

The majority of teenagers are crazy about driving, having a flash car, the most expensive car or just being able to drivePassing the theory test, doing a couple driving lessons and then BAM!! You got your driving license! It seems simple doesn’t it?

Just because we turn 17 it doesn’t mean we have to go crazy to drive right then. Learning to drive

whilst doing your A level’s could affect your overall grade. You could take your time

and do your driving when you’re not so busy with your A level work or college work, you don’t have to do it now because everyone else is doing it. Also we don’t consider the expenses for all of this. If you’re under 25 your insurance will be really expensive unless you do a joint insurance with your parents. Some people if they’re lucky their parents would be paying for more or less everything for them but for others it isn’t that simple.

Driving: If it affects your education, you don’t have enough time, if there is a lack of money, just remember you don’t have to rush into it right now and sometimes you just have to take a step back and look at things logically.

by Nasmin KhanamAs you might be aware, the movement from dumb-phones to smart-phones has been passing through rapidly. So, now many of us are here, waiting to make the final decision.

To make this judgement easier, I will be going through a list of topics, and will argue

which 1 will win.

ApplicationsAs you might already know, the iPhone’s popularity is due to the high number of apps.

But does this mean that the Blackberry doesn’t run apps? No, in-fact there are many apps out there, but they are just not as popular compared to Apple’s app store. There is a simple

explanation for this; the blackberry is lacking all the sensors, which allow a phone to be more interactive. So, when it comes to applications, then the iPhone is the winner.

Personal vs. Work-lifeWhen Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind Blackberry, first designed the smart-phone, they

kept the business-men/women in mind. The main functionality which has been available from the beginning was the email functionality. The iPhone may support email and other communication features; however

is there really any real competition? You see, big high-up people in the business world use RIM’s Blackberry, but why? I believe the QWERTY keyboard and email features have made the device more

suitable for work life, as well as personal life. So the iPhone has no chance.

Physical featuresYou see, the phone is becoming more of a fashion icon, so the looks and physical features matter a lot. Dropping the phone- The iPhone has a sensitive touch screen, and if you drop it, the chances are that the screen breaks. On the other hand, the Blackberry is very strong and can withstand many accidents. I mean, the phone wasn’t invented to be dropped, so is this really an important factor to consider? Well, the iPhone looks nice, its sleek metal body with the nice logo on the back, give it a special effect. On the other hand, non-touch Blackberries are a little cramped, with too many keys and it’s just more like a brick. So, when it comes to appearance, the iPhone wins,

PriceWhen it comes to the price department, we can have great debates. The price varies greatly, depending on the features, storage and sometimes even on the colour of the phone. So, I went online and looked at a top-end Blackberry & compared it to the top-end iPhone. I also compared low-end phones. See the results on the right:

As the table on the right shows, Blackberries are much more inexpensive compared to iPhones. So the Blackberry wins in this category.

So what is my final verdict? Is it the iPhone or Blackberry? None. Yes, none. You see, the Blackberry is as good as the iPhone. It just depends what you want to do with the phone. What personal needs must be fulfilled by the smart phone? Everyone really has their own opinions, and they have to realize which smart phone is more suitable.

Currently celebrities such as Tiger Woods, Ashley Cole, John

Terry, Vernon Kay and even Gareth Gates, have been in the press for cheating. So is 2010 not a good year for men. Or is it the case that it’s just the men who are getting caught. Just because women are not in the press, does it really mean they don’t cheat, or they just don’t get caught?

When you think of the word cheating, things related are deceiving, dishonesty and many others. But there are many definitions of what can be seen as cheating. You can argue that Vernon Kay didn’t cheat. But does that justify

what he did of being right?

In the magazine Glamour, Nicole from New York sent in a comment about a situation she’s been in;

“When I was in college, I dated a guy for two years. He was the first guy I slept with, the first I brought home to my parents, the one I spent every holiday and birthday with. Then he started fooling around with my best friend’s roommate, and a month later they were a couple”

Men and woman, girls and boys will

go to drastic measures to make sure they do not get caught in the act. Their tactics include getting more than one sim card, one for each partner, using their work phone for their mistress, security locks,

never leaving your phone on its own and many other methods.

We all know someone who has cheated or has been

cheated on, or even

ourselves for this matter.

When asking someone why

they cheat, they often blame

alcohol. Because roles reversed, if

your boyfriend or girlfriend cheated

on you, but they turned round and

said it was because they were drunk, I can

guarantee you would not use that as an excuse. Women often use the excuse to make them feel better, and men use the excuse of being not satisfied. But the most common answer seems to be when asking someone why they cheat, they do not blame themselves.

John wife’s Tony has decided to

Yes you’ve heard the songs about being broken hearted, hurt and un-happy endings, but there just not songs you sing in your bedroom with your brush. Its reality. Its true what you hear, men do cheat more then woman but that does not change the fact that both sexes both get effected equally.

take him back. But is this is a good thing. Can it be the case of once a cheater always a cheater? And this does not set a good example for women. It portrays the image that it is okay for men to cheat, because we’ll just take them back.

22 per cent of married men have strayed at least once during their married lives. 22 per cent of married women have had affairs at least once during their married lives. 5 per cent of married men and 3 per cent of married women reported having sex with someone other than their spouse in 1997, so can you imagine the statistics now.

I think I can say that when being cheated on, you are not going to be smiling when you find out. Yes

that’s right. People do get hurt. People do get upset. And people can even loose trust in anyone after that. But most

importantly, they become scared of being hurt again. It is wrong and I personally think if you are willing to cheat, you shouldn’t be in a committed relationship. They will also lose respect for the person they were with or are with in some cases. It can also be the case that because people loose trust in people, they prefer to stay with the person if they say they say they are “willing to change”. So whats the result. Whats the conclusion. I think I can proudly say and possibly be agreed with by many that maybe you should just “ditch em” before they ditch you.

“ You are not going to be

smiling when you find out you’ve been

cheated on. ”

Do we pick our Uni’s, or do they pick us? by Figen Goksungur

However have you ever considered this, we students do all we can to get the grades that we think are appropriate and acceptable, and then we find out that the Uni’s that we want to go accept something ridiculous like the minimum grades of two A’s and a B (equivalent to 340 UCAS points) with an additional AS level excluding General Studies. For instance a Uni ranking 105th expects you to have two B’s and a C or 280 UCAS points. We look at the high profile Uni’s such as Oxford and Cambridge and see that they expect minimum grades of A*AA , and even if you get the grade you are still not guaranteed the place; as they may need to give you an additional exam to see if you are ‘worthy’ of attending there. In addition to this the majority of

the students in the high profile Uni’s tend to be from the upper/middle class backgrounds that have attended public/private schools. We can clearly see the equality in society. Can’t we now? Some may disagree with the idea of class division as well as inequality and believe that someone attending a state school and public school have the same opportunity and chance to get in to a Uni that they want. But nevertheless, when you’re saying this, are you actually convincing yourself for something that you don’t actually believe in? When we are writing our personal statements, to send of to our ‘not so successful’ Uni (as the majority of us will not bother trying to aim any higher to achieve greater ambitions, since

we are all aware and know that our choices are limited). We are told to include details such as the 6th form or College that we have attended being a multi-cultural society with a range of different beliefs and ethnicities within, in order to make the application more successful. But including this in a personal statement wouldn’t get you in to Oxford or Cambridge, it just makes it sound like an excuse for not getting the expected entry requirements. Although the government are spending millions of pounds in order to encouraging the poor and moderately well-off to apply for Uni’s it is still recognised that middle class families still exert a hold over places at the top universities. Keep this in mind, do we pick our Uni’s , or do they pick us?

Every year we are told that getting in to higher education is getting extremely competitive and is in high demand; meaning more competition to get in to a good Uni.

Alice inDirected by Tim Burton

Released on the 5th March 2010 is the movie everyone’s talking about. It is about a 20 year old, golden-haired Alice who returns to the magical world she once visited in her younger years, where she meets her old friends and fulfils her destiny- to slay the evil Red Queen’s Jabawockee and end her horrific reign over “Underland”. I am obliged to say that Tim Burton’s done it again with a simple but interesting story-line and amazing graphics. If watched in 3D, this movie could take your breath away! - Unless of course you’re above the age of 12…

If I imagined my own movie of the original novel written by Lewis Carroll, I would have made the screen filled with vibrant colours, magic and fun. Alice in Wonderland is supposed to be a movie filled with adventure and thrill. However this is not what director Tim Burton had planned. Instead, the viewer gets a shock when they find out that the

movie titled “Alice in Wonderland” is in fact a sequel of the story, not the original. I mean you could at least call it “Alice in Wonderland the Return” or “Alice in Wonderland 2” and save us the disappointment Mr Burton! And the setting is but a dull navy blue colour with little emphasis of a magical land and not as many magical characters as the original, for example the birds with umbrellas on their heads and pencil-beaks.

Indeed it is inevitable that the film should finish with a happy ending, but the storyline seemed to be lacking a real twist. Apart from the Red Queen taking over what is now called “Underland”, there isn’t any other twist in the movie to make the confusing and utterly curious yet fantastic movie, it deserves to be!

However some people may argue that it’s perfect for its target audience. A movie given a U rating doesn’t have the intention to be a complicated adventure, but a pleasant,

comfortable experience for both children and adults which is why I still advise you to watch the simple yet unforgettable Alice in Wonderland.

Kick AssStarring: Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz Dave has always wondered why we don’t see superheroes in real life, and one day he decides to try it out for himself. He springs into action against some local hoodlums, is thrilled and amazed to find his life is changed forever. With his new superhero name ‘Kick-Ass’; Dave inspires an entire subculture of copycats. I loved the way the movie showed how a superhero might work in real life and what peoples reactions are to seeing a masked marauder walk down the street. The fight scenes are over the top but that doesn’t detract from the movie at all as everything in it is over the top and the filmakers let you know they at every opportunity. Hit Girl is the best at that. I don’t know if it is just fantastic choreography or the fact someone so young is doing something so violent but it all comes together here. Overall it is a pretty fun movie with some of the most sophisticated and downright hilarious dialogue yet written for a superhero flick.

ShankStarring: Kedar Williams-Stirling, Ashley Bashy Thomas, Adam Deacon, Kaya Scodelario This near-future London urban thriller almost seems to follows the guidelines of Noel Clarke’s films Kidulthood/Adulthood. It’s set in 2015, when the economic meltdown has transformed the streets into lawless war zones controlled by knife-wielding hoodies who consolidate power by preying on the weak and controlling the city’s meagre food supplies. Offering some resistance, however, the Paper Chaserz, a non-violent gang who abhor bloodshed, but when their leader is viciously stabbed in the back, his little brother (Kedar Williams-Stirling) convinces them to take revenge. Although Shank starts well Ultimately the film is let down by a repetitive script, some poor performances and a dodgy central message – what is it?

Telephoneby Lady Gaga CD and Download

Lady Gaga‘s new song telephone is hitting the UK charts and knocking Tiny Temper of the number one spot. The song features R&B star Beyonce with her sharp and immaculate vocals. Ok I admit the song is amazing but the video is just better. The video is based on two friends who kill innocent people, ok that does seem a bit weird but the outfits and the choreography is incredible. It would seem like an impossible thing to do, to make a film about scent but it was made. Based on the 1985 novel Perfume by Patrick Süskind , the 2006 created film was directed by Tom Tykwer and written by Andrew Birkin, Bernd Eichinger and Tom Tykwer. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille played by Ben Whishaw, is an orphan that has caused his mothers death, which grows up to become a man with an extraordinary, eccentric and superhuman talent of being able to smell all objects, from water to glass to metal. This ability is soon recognised by him self as being unique and one of a kind. However this makes him realise that he has no scent of him self. Which makes the audience sympathise for the crimes that he commits in order to achieve his ambition of creating the most beautiful perfume that man kind have ever smelt in order to make him feel recognised

and as an individual in society due to the fact of him not feeling complete.

The use of colour and music makes the viewers feel as if they are experiencing the smell. From the dark and dirty Parisian fish market to the rich and gorgeous surroundings of Grasse. You are lead in to a world of fantasy that you can smell with out the actual scents. It is pretty understandable for the age certificate being 15, as there are some very intense scenes, from the murders committed to the scene in the centre of the town where Grenouille is thought to be an angel sent form heaven. This is a must see film in order to understand the whole criminal sympathy. In addition to this it seems very horrific and gruesome in a fascinating way which enabled you to continue watching every scene without hesitation.

The World According to Clarksonby Jeremy Clarkson

Jeremy Clarkson has a straight forward, yet very funny, writing style and I must confess this fine read had me in stiches on many occasion. He takes in a variety of subjects in the many articles including fox shooting, a suspicion of all men bearded, a fondness for the Germans, technology, his younger days at the Rotheram Advertiser and a variety of other topics. Each article is an amusing anecdote on modern life and while the book probably contains nothing particularly profound, it is an hilarious read with some well made arguments that you can antagonise environmentalists, liberals and The Beards with. Jeremy Clarkson is the kind of guy that you either love or hate. I honestly believe that those who hate him are simply insecure. GREAT READ.

The film adaptation of the novel may surprise many fans as it vaguely sticks to the original story line from the books. The special effects used in the film were done well which may interest some viewers but apart from that I think that many Darren Shan fans will not be pleased with the outcome of this film.

The continuous unnecessary humour from John C Riley who plays Larten Crepsley takes away the seriousness of the character making it more of a comedy than a teenage horror film. In my opinion I didn’t enjoy the film since I had read the books already and disliked the film.

It’s a love it or hate it movie.

by Stephenie Meyer

From one of the bestselling authors of time, Stephenie Meyer has again impressed her readers with the introduction of a science-fiction novel called The Host .

A strong element of romance guides us through the novel, as we are faced with the invasion of earth and the loss of humanity defeated by creatures known as souls, leaving the human specie to strive for survival and the hosts to survive the emotional wreckages.

We are immediately introduced to Melanie searching for her loved ones with her invaded body by her host called Wanderer. Melanie has to find Jared and Jamie, since she promised them that she would be back.

A love triangle is formed by two bodies and three sets of minds, as the body is discovered by the rebellious humans that are fighting for their lives in hiding. No desert separating them

can set them apart from the ones that the body and mind are in love with. An emotional romantic, Sci-Fi novel that will bring tears to your eyes as human emotions are portrayed in every possible detail, outlining individualism which is seen to be very unconventional to a Sci-Fi novel.

It is obvious that the games provided by facebook are what are making it the most successful social networking site in the world.Games such as, Pet society, Restaurant City, Fishville, Farmville and many more attract all ages. Some may argue why? I mean, it’s not like they’re

Everyone’s Going FAD Mad!by Louisa Demetriou

I am certain it is safe to say that at a point in your teenage life, when you’ve done a bad deed, and your parents have gossiped this to your grandparents, that when you had next visited them, they had stared down at you with both eye brows raised, giving you a clear vision up their nostrils and had started complacently, “In my days we never had these silly computer games and distractions!”

excellent quality. The graphics are incredibly basic and the context of the games isn’t what makes them fun. After all, most tasks of the games are to feed, brush and wash your pet in order for it to stay alive, or to cook your food.

However one asset of which I feel makes these games such an addiction is the fake money which can be earned through completing these tasks. When a player completes a task and images of coins appear flying around on the monitor it can bring a sense of success, even if the mind subconsciously knows that it isn’t real. The player still finds it rewarding that they can use that money to buy decorations for their “pet’s” home, or improve the restaurant they’re “cooking” in. It can be argued that this is a good method for many people to relax, or to find pleasure in once they’ve had a stressful day at work. This leads on to my second

reason- easy access. A revolution of technology plays a substantial part in bringing on the succulent facebook games obsession. Today every house has at least one computer/laptop/mobile which has access to the internet from which facebook games can be played, which is much easier

than travelling to a shop and buying a game and moreover, a game which isn’t portable such as Monopoly or Snakes and Ladders. You’d be silly not to stay at home, lay like broccoli on the couch and have fun without having to move a muscle- apart from your thumb and your index finger of course.

It is very common for people to preferably stay at home and play

games on facebook, than go out with their friends to the park! Nonetheless I feel people are taking it into over-board and are becoming obsessed with these games so much, that it could lead to many cons for the world’s tomorrow. When picturing the future of our society I cannot help but feel a sense of loneliness and hopelessness for mankind as they sit glued to their phone or computer locked away in their bedrooms, brainwashed with eyes bloodshot from staring at a monitor for so long. Everyone is struggling to leave the space they so very much adore and cherish- the computer desk; and outside in the fresh air the landscape is desolate, no life, no children playing on the grass, just the odd elderly man who Is strolling along, left behind by the speedy invasion of the 21st century.
