Dear Friends in Christ,
Peace and Joy to you and your loved ones!
Funerals and Prayers. We mourn in our diocesan family the passing on of our Bishop Emeritus, John Mortimer Smith, D.D. We had his Funeral Mass last Saturday in Trenton. Please also include in your prayers Fr. Leon Buni, whose Funeral was Wednesday of this week. I have known Fr. Leon since I was a seminarian. We both served at Star of the Sea Church in Long Branch in the late 80’s.
Fears and Hopes. In some way, fear was present to the 17 of us, participants of the Central American Pilgrimage Retreat, which Deacon Lou and I recently attended. Guatemala and El Salvador are noted for the killings of missionaries in the past. The added reality was seeing the omnipresence of barbed wires on massive walls wherever we went. For security reasons, too, an armed convoy accompanied us in our travels. The experience was positively hopeful, though. “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church,” as Tertullian once wrote. We saw it in the eyes of the worshipping faithful in the area—hope for the marginalized indigenous people, and for the missionary Church at large.
Faith and Love. Because with hope, faith and love remain, as St. Paul wrote in this weekend’s Second Reading. Love allows Jeremiah and Jesus to undergo suffering and persecution. By extension, love strengthens us to endure the stresses and distresses of life.
Till then. With my prayers and love,
Fr. PJ
P.S.
Thank you for your generosity. For the first time in six years, our Christmas collection is up than the previous year. It has been on a relatively steady decline since 2013, other than the 2013 and 2014 numbers for St. Mary’s. May our gracious Lord continually bless you for your help and support.

Debt Reducon Collecon Weekend THIS WEEKEND
The December debt reducon collecon was $2,344.00 which we paid directly toward principal. Thank you for your generosity. Did you know that during the renovation, we removed the old oil tanks and replaced our heating system with a new Natural Gas driven HVAC system?
Here’s One Positive Encouragement
Without faith, what do we have? We only have today’s experiences, good or bad, as they relate to our earthly life. If we are having a good day, that’s great but what if we are having a bad day? Do we curse, throw a fit, hate ourselves, make others around us uncomfortable and unhappy? If we think about it, we can make ourselves feel beer by praying and have the faith that we can handle the problem. With God and prayer, we do have control of things. Our earthly bodies are the home of our soul and God’s spirit. Do you think God gave us our earthly bodies without a way to protect his spirit and our soul? NO, HE DID NOT! He gave us free will, faith, prayer and the knowledge that all the earthly distracons we live through make us stronger. Jesus died on the cross for us and to show us the way to eternal happiness through faith, prayer and helping others. Remember the best day you ever had and the joy and happiness that came with it. Everyday will be that joyful forever, when we are with him. Keep praying, your soul and God’s spirit deserves it.

GUIDELINES FOR GODPARENTS/SPONSORS
Have you been asked to be a GODPARENT? Have you been asked to SPONSOR someone ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, or for an adult in the RCIA program? It is an honor and a privilege to be asked. You are seen as someone that a family, child, teenager, or adult looks up to as living a strong, Christian Catholic faith. You model that behavior in the way that you live your life.
To receive a sponsorship form signed and sealed by the Pastor, please keep the following in mind: I am age 16 or older. I am registered in the parish. If married, the marriage is recognized by the Catholic Church. I attend Mass on a regular basis. I contribute to the support of the Church, as best I can. (Attendance is taken by the envelopes
in the collection basket). I receive Sacraments according to the Laws of the Church, and I fulfill the requirements listed above. The Church takes very seriously the role of being a sponsor. Choosing a sponsor would be based on the person’s dedication to the faith and regular practice thereof. Sponsor letters will not be given to individuals who do not meet these criteria.
While preparing meals or baking don’t forget to check the packaging for the “Box Tops For Educaon”. Each box top provides St. Jerome School with 10 cents to purchase computer equipment.. Deposit the unexpired tops into the containers at each Church. Thank you for your connued support to our Blue Ribbon School.

Deacon’s Corner In January Fr PJ and I participated in a Pilgrimage Retreat in Guatemala and El Salvador led by Maryknoll Missionaries. While there, we not only heard the witness stories of these missionaries (many of whom were personal witness to the lives of many Central American Martyrs) but we also heard the stories and visited the sites and shrines and of many of these Central
American Martyrs. These included : ST Archbishop Oscar Romero, Blessed FR Stanley Rother ( the irst declared American Martyr, who was beatiied in Oklahoma City in 2017) , the site of the Martyrdom of four Religious women, including two Maryknoll Sisters in 1980, and the site at the University of Central America where six Jesuits and their companions were killed. It was an experience that I know both Father and myself continue to process in our own lives. In the Pilgrimage retreat the Maryknoll missionaries had invited us to "Come and See'. Before we left Guatemala and El Salvador and having experienced the witness of these Maryknolls and Martyrs they challenged and commissioned us to "Go and Tell.” So on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 PM at a St Jerome's Rectory Confernce room, we would like to tell you what we have seen. Please join us. Deacon Lou

O God be gracious to me and bless me and make the light of Your face shine on me and draw me back into Your loving arms.. Lord I have wandered far from You, and have been chasing aer the things that are of lile importance… and in so doing I have le my First Love – I have wandered far from You Lord Jesus, I want to return into Your loving arms.
So be gracious to me Lord, and may the light of Your face shine on me once more, in Jesus name I pray. In Your grace I come to You in humbleness of heart and pray that we may return into the sweet fellowship we once enjoyed – Thank You Lord that you are a God Whose greatest desire is to reconcile sinners back into Your loving arms.
