From Fr. JC Maximilian’s Desk “Almsgiving”

“Prayer with fasting is good. Almsgiving with righteousness is better than wealth with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold, for almsgiving saves from death, and purges all sin. Those who give alms will enjoy a full life” (Tobit 12:8-9).

The Season of Lent will soon be upon us (Ash Wednesday is March 6), so it is time to give some thoughts to what we will be doing for Lent. Most people give something up for Lent – like chocolate, coffee, potato chips. For a few years, I would give up television. All of that is a form of fasting, and if done for the proper reason, to make up more aware of the hungry in the world, or to restore our perspective of the item in terms of our relationship with God, then fasting is a great Lenten practice. In fact, fasting is one of the three marks of Lent; together with prayer and almsgiving. Next weekend, we will have a guest columnist who wrote a great article on fasting, in this case abstaining from meat on Fridays. Since we are kicking off the Annual Catholic Appeal this weekend, I thought it would be an appropriate time to reflect a bit on the practice of almsgiving. As the quote from the Book of Tobit above indicates, almsgiving is seen as being better than either fasting or prayer alone. Why? Simply because almsgiving involves both prayer and fasting. Almsgiving is giving to the poor. Most of the time it involves giving money, but it can also include giving food, clothing, and other goods that meet the physical needs of the poor. Yet almsgiving is more than just philanthropy. While giving to a sister or brother in need, almsgiving is also a giving to God. It is recognizing the image and likeness of God in the person in need, so to love them as we love God Himself. Almsgiving also involves fasting, because the giving involved is sacrificial. That means not just giving from our surplus wealth, but giving up something for ourselves so that we can give it to those in greater need. When I was a high school chaplain we tried to teach the students that. Before Thanksgiving, we would have a food drive for the local Soup Kitchen. We found out that the students, who were mostly from upper middle-class families, would just go into their family pantries and grab some cans and boxes of food. Of course, the food helped the poor, but it was not almsgiving because it did not involve any sacrifice. So we asked them to give up something from the cafeteria for a week – a dessert, or a soda – and use that money to go buy a couple of cans of food. Not everyone did it, but those who did said that it gave their giving a whole new meaning. As with anything, almsgiving is easier if we have a plan. So before Lent decide who you are going to gives alms to. Then decide what sacrifices you are going to make to raise the goods that you are going to give to those in need, and then finally, decide how you will pray for those in need during the Lenten season. If your Lenten Almsgiving is successful, hopefully it will bear fruit in your ongoing almsgiving, which includes the tithing we are invited to do to support the parish, the diocese, and the Church at large. A plan for tithing involves the “4 P’s”: Planned, Priority, Percentage, Progressive. Planned means designating money in our budgets to give. Priority means giving to God first before other expenses. Percentage means giving a percentage of your income, and not just a dollar amount (“tithe” means 10%, but you could start at a smaller percentage, say 5%). Finally, Progressive means increasing the percentage regularly, say once a year or if you receive a raise or promotion. Jesus presented almsgiving as a necessary part of Christian life: "when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Mt 6:2-3). He does not say IF you give alms, but WHEN. Like fasting and prayer, almsgiving is non-negotiable. Finally, St. Paul says it well, “Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

RESURRECTION CONFERENCE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT de PAUL

HELP LINE: 461-1131 Many, many thanks to the BSA Troop 25 who chose the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Resurrection Conference to be the recipient of their "Souper Bowl for Caring" collection ($925.00). This collection is a youth-led initiative to fight hunger and poverty in local communities across the country. It is so great when the organizations in our parish work together to help those in need. God Bless your troop for caring and God Bless all who contributed to this collection.

Liturgical Adaptation In light of the cold and flu season, and considering the concern over communicable diseases, we encourage you not to come to Mass if you are not

feeling well or showing signs of the flu. During this season when colds and the flu are so prevalent, we are not distributing the Precious Blood during Mass. Holy Communion is only being given in the species of the consecrated bread, the Body of Christ. To diminish the possibility of catching and/or transmitting colds and flu, we encourage you not to hold hands during the Our Father and suggest we share the Sign of Peace with one another with meaningful eye contact, a smile, and a bow of your head to one another. Only $102.56 is needed to reach our goal of $500. Thank you to all that have supported and continue to support this campaign. WHAT IS A QCD AND RMD YOU MAY ASK? A QDC is a Qualified Charitable Distribution, which Resurrection Parish qualifies for through the Diocese of Trenton. A RMD is a Required Minimum Distribution from an IRA. Taxpayers who are 70 ½ or older are required to take an annual Required Minimum Distribution from their IRA accounts. Distributions from traditional IRA accounts are taxed as ordinary income. Taxpayers may direct some or all of their RMD, up to $100,000 annually, to be given directly to a QCD without any tax liability to the taxpayer or the charity. This is a convenient and tax effective way for parishioners to support Resurrection Parish. Please consult your tax professional or account manager if you would like to take advantage of this method of giving to our parish as these payments need to be made directly from your IRA to the parish.

Annual Catholic Appeal This weekend is Pledge Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all of the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s

name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA. This year Resurrection’s share of the goal is $60,000. As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, you have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. I ask you to take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to participate. This year we again are striving to reach our goal of $7 million. I am always grateful and moved by the level of support you give to our parish. I thank you for this support, and may God continue to bless you and your family

Resurrection Parish Religious Education Program February 24, 2019 – Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The Lord is kind and merciful.” Psalm 103

UNDERSTANDING THE MASS, BY Dr. Ed Sri EUCHARISTIC PRAYER (continued from last week))

The Epiclesis – Epiclesis literally means “invocation upon.” In this prayer the priest prays that the Father will send the Holy Spirit so that the gifts of bread and wine can be changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus. “Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ” (Eucharistic Prayer II). The priest holds his hands over the bread and wine as he says these words. He also calls on the Holy Spirit, praying that the Eucharist may draw all those who receive into a greater communion: “Grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ” (Eucharistic Prayer II).

The Words of Consecration – “…This is my body…” “…this is the chalice of my blood…”These are the words of consecration which were spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper. The Last Supper was the annual Passover meal celebrated by the Israelites as a liturgical “memorial” (Anamnesis in Greek). For the ancient Jews, this was much more than remembering a past event (Exodus from Egypt) like what we do to celebrate the 4th of July. In a biblical “memorial” the past was not just remembered but re-lived. The past event was mystically made present to those celebrating the feast. When a Jew celebrated the Passover it was as if he were walking out of Egypt and crossing the Red Sea with his ancestors. In this way, the first Passover event was extended in time so that each new generation could participate spiritually in this event. The Passover feast thus forged solidarity throughout the generations.

At the Last Supper, Jesus refers to His blood as the blood of the “new and eternal covenant.” For the Apostles, these words recalled when Moses talked about some kind of new sacrifice with a new covenant. Jesus identifies Himself with the sacrificial lamb offered for Passover. Jesus’ actions at the Last Supper mysteriously anticipate His sacrifice on the Cross. In the Passover meal of the Last Supper, Jesus willingly offers up His own body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. All that was left for Him to do was to carry out that sacrifice in a bloody manner on Good Friday.

Jesus concludes by saying “Do this in memory of me.” In other words, His apostles are commanded to celebrate the New Passover sacrifice of His body and blood as a biblical memorial (anamnesis). Thus, all that was involved with the Last Supper would be made present to worshipers in the celebration of the Eucharist. Therefore, the Eucharist makes the events of the Upper Room and Calvary sacramentally present to us today. Just as the Jews participated in the Exodus through the memorial of Passover, so do Christians participate in the new Exodus of Jesus’ triumphant death on the Cross every time we celebrate the new Passover of the Eucharist. In this sense, the Mass is to be understood as a sacrifice.

In the Mass, we can join all our joys and sufferings with Jesus’ offering of Himself to the Father, and in so doing, we offer ever more of our own lives as a gift to the Father. “The sacrifice of Christ becomes also the sacrifice of the members of His Body.” (CCC 1368)

The new translation changes the word “Cup” to “Chalice”: “For this is the Chalice of my blood…”This new translation remains closer to Jesus’ actual words of institution as recorded in the Gospels and is more harmonious with the Latin text of the Mass. The same is true when the words “for all” are replaced by the words “for the many.” And, while Jesus died for all, not everyone chooses to accept this gift. Each individual must choose to accept the gift of salvation and live according to this grace, so that he or she may be among “the many” who are described in this text.

Mystery of Faith -- Following the Consecration is the Mystery of Faith, which expresses the priest and people’s awe and wonder over the mystery that is taking place as Jesus is now present on the altar. Here, we proclaim the story of salvation summed up in Jesus’ death and resurrection: “We proclaim your death O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
