POPE FRANCIS
GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 9 December 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters: With the opening of the Holy Door yesterday in Saint Peter’s,
we inaugurated the Jubilee of Mercy. This extraordinary Holy Year reminds us that, amid
profound changes in our world, the Church is called to bear convincing witness to God’s
mercy, which alone can triumph over human sin and bring true freedom. God’s mercy,
made present in our midst by the incarnation of his Son, is the very heart of the Gospel.
This Year of Grace reminds us that mercy is what “pleases God most”, and that it has to
find clear expression in our lives and in the Church’s structures. In today’s world, mercy
and forgiveness often appear overwhelmed by self-interest, hedonism and venality, while
in the Christian life they can be stifled by hypocrisy and worldliness. Forgetfulness of
God’s mercy blinds us even to seeing sin for what it is. That is why this Holy Year of
Mercy is so important. Let us ask the Lord to make us ever more aware of his mercy at
work in our lives and ever more effective in testifying to its transforming power in our
world. www.Vatican.va Libreria Editrice Vaticana

THIRD ANNUAL PRINCE GEORGE 40 DAYS FOR LIFE:
The next 40 Days for Life Campaign is scheduled to start on
February 10th. We are looking for co-coordinators to help organize the event and volunteers for the vigil. As this is a 40
day campaign it requires many people to volunteer.
40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local
communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into
action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion. It draws attention to the evil
of abortion through the use of a three-point program: 1) Prayer and fasting, 2) Constant vigil and 2) Community
outreach. Prince George is one of the four communities in BC that hosts this event. Many lives have been saved through
your efforts. Help to save even more lives. Please email Tony at [email protected] to volunteer, or for more info.
ATTENTION FORMER FRONTIER APOSTLES—
What does it mean for descendants of residential school staff to reconcile with Canadian history? To explore this
question, Caroline Crocker, a graduate student at the University of Victoria, is reaching out to other Canadians like
herself - people whose parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or other relatives worked in the Indian Residential School
System - to ask them to join a focus group on Saturday, January 30, 2016 to discuss the topic. Caroline’s research project is
on reconciliation (improving relationships and healing) in Canada between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people,
specifically in regards to the Indian Residential School system. If you worked at an Indian Residential School and you
think possibly your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews would be interested in participating in this discussion,
contact Caroline by phone at 613-986-2276 or by email at [email protected] for further information.

DIOCESE OF PRINCE GEORGE
Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016)
Jubilee Indulgences
“I wish that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God’s mercy, which comes to meet each person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forgetting completely the sin committed.”
– Pope Francis’ Letter to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization
What is an Indulgence?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1471: “An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead.”
How to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence?
For Able-Bodied Catholics
Make a pilgrimage. For those able to make a pilgrimage to one of the Jubilee churches in Rome, that is certainly an option. Otherwise, Bishop Jensen has designated three churches within the Diocese of Prince George as Jubilee Churches, each with a Holy Door of Mercy. Crossing through one of these Holy Doors is a spiritual journey that signals, as the Holy Father said, "the deep desire for true conversion."
Go to Confession. Receive the Holy Eucharist “with a reflection of mercy.” Make a profession of faith with the Apostles’ Creed Pray for pope’s intentions (an Our Father and a Hail Mary are recommended).
For the Sick, Elderly and Alone, Confined to the Home
From the words of the Holy Father, “Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial.”
Receiving Eucharist or Attending Holy Mass and community prayer even through various means of communication (i.e. Mass offered on television).
For those in Prison They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapel of the prison.
“May the gesture of directing their thought and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell signify for them their passage through Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom.”
For the Deceased
Indulgences may be obtained for the dead by the carrying out of these same acts by the Faithful with the intention of offering the indulgence for someone who is deceased. “We are bound to them (deceased) by the witness of faith and charity that they have left us. Thus, as we remember them in Eucharistic celebration, thus we can, in the great mystery of the Communion of Saints, pray for them, that the merciful Face of the Father free them of every remnant of fault and strongly embrace them in the unending beatitude.”
For all Catholics Jubilee Indulgence may also be obtained when a member of the Faithful personally
performs a spiritual or corporal work of mercy. “The experience of mercy, indeed, becomes visible in the witness of concrete signs as Jesus himself taught us. Each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence.”
Other Acts For all women who have resorted to abortion.
“The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father. For this reason too, I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it.”
